Movie debuts August 20 on Prime Video
Streaming on Prime Video two weeks after opening in theaters (and a few months after its world premiere at Cannes, where reviews were mostly positive), Annette marks the English-language debut for veteran French director Leos Carax (Holy Motors). But that doesn't make it any less unconventional than a typical Carax film. In fact, this one's a full-on rock musical, with original songs by brothers Ron and Russell Mael of Sparks (they are having a busy year), who also came up with the story and wrote the screenplay. That often dark story centers on a married couple (Adam Driver, Marion Cotillard)—he's a stand-up comedian, she's an opera singer—whose lives change when their newborn daughter turns out to have an unexpected gift. It's probably best not to know too much going in, though do know that many critics compared Annette to the work of Charlie Kaufman.
