10 Films to See in August
August may not be a strong month for quality blockbuster releases—just look at the advance reviews for Suicide Squad, for example—but that doesn't mean there won't be anything good to see in theaters. Below, we pick out the month's most promising new films, including several Sundance hits.
Ain’t Them Bodies Saints director David Lowery’s jump to big-budget, effects-driven filmmaking has earned good early reviews. Co-written by Lowery and Toby Halbrooks, the film re-imagines the classic characters from a short story by Seton I. Miller and S.S. Field—but omits the musical numbers from Disney's 1977 film. Bryce Dallas Howard plays Grace, a forest ranger whose father (Robert Redford) has always spun tales of a dragon living in the forests of the Pacific Northwest. Her skepticism toward his stories changes when she meets Pete (Oakes Fegley), a mysterious 10-year-old orphan who claims to live in the woods with a dragon named Elliot. The supporting cast includes Oona Lawrence, Wes Bentley, Isiah Whitlock Jr., and Karl Urban.
