August may not be a strong month for quality blockbuster releases—just look at the advance reviews for Suicide Squad, for example—but that doesn't mean there won't be anything good to see in theaters. Below, we pick out the month's most promising new films, including several Sundance hits.

In his latest documentary, director Werner Herzog applies his unique methods and point of view to explore the internet. Starting with the technology's birth and continuing to a speculative future, Herzog examines the internet’s impact on our lives in 10 chapters. Like much of his recent work, Herzog’s quizzical consideration proved a winner with critics when it premiered at Sundance earlier this year.
