10 Films to See in August
August may not be a strong month for quality blockbuster releases—just look at the advance reviews for Suicide Squad, for example—but that doesn't mean there won't be anything good to see in theaters. Below, we pick out the month's most promising new films, including several Sundance hits.
In Actress director Robert Greene’s performance-based non-fiction film, the “Kate” of the title is actress Kate Lyn Sheil and the “Christine” is Christine Chubbuck, a news anchor who committed suicide on air in 1974. As in his previous film, Greene, who won a Special Jury Award for writing at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, explores the meaning and impact of reality, performance, artifice, and perspective as Kate researches Christine’s life in order to portray her in a film. Excellent early reviews make this a challenging film to seek out this month.
