Various networks. Despite minor tweaks here and there, and the occasional new face, late night talk shows are nothing if not formulaic. No longer. Denied a studio audience—or even a studio—by social distancing orders, nearly every late-night host is returning to the air this week by recording episodes alone at their homes, with guests visiting via teleconferencing apps. The results promise to offer a reassuring presence while injecting a rare and welcome looseness into the genre.
Look for nightly new episodes of The Late Show With Stephen Colbert (CBS), The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and Late Night With Seth Meyers (NBC), Jimmy Kimmel Live! (ABC, though airing at 12:05a following Nightline), The Daily Show With Trevor Noah (Comedy Central), Conan (TBS), and even Watch What Happens Live (Bravo), whose host Andy Cohen has been diagnosed with covid-19. Weekly shows Full Frontal With Samantha Bee (TBS), Real Time With Bill Maher (HBO), and Last Week Tonight With John Oliver (HBO) are also airing new episodes in their normal time slots (as is the biweekly Desus & Mero on Showtime).
