Best & Worst Films at the 2017 Berlin International Film Festival
One of international cinema's most prestigious annual events, the 67th Berlin International Film Festival (commonly known as the Berlinale) wrapped up this weekend, with Hungarian drama On Body and Soul earning the top award from a jury led by director Paul Verhoeven.
Below, we sample the reactions from film critics to that and other notable films premiering at this year's festival (including the upcoming X-Men film Logan, new features from Oren Moverman, Sally Potter, and Agnieszka Holland, and more).
While 2013’s The Wolverine was a huge improvement over the abysmal X-Men Origins: Wolverine, director James Mangold’s second swipe at the adamantium-clawed superhero is “easily the best Wolverine outing... The Dark Knight of the mutant-filled X-franchise, a gripping film that transcends the comic book genre,” according to USA Today’s Brian Truitt, and many critics agree with that assessment. However, there are a few detractors for Hugh Jackman’s final appearance as Wolverine. Stephanie Zacharek of Time claims it's “mostly tedious and unpleasant” despite Jackman’s performance.
