20 Movie Sequels That Were Better Than the Originals
When it comes to movies, there is often a general feeling that sequels are never quite as good as the original. After all, follow-up films can often be pumped-out projects trying to recapture the magic of something great, and they often fall short as a result.
But not always. Sometimes, like in the case of the new Top Gun: Maverick, the sequel is even better received than the first film.
Read on to learn more about 20 movies that critics thought were indeed better than the initial project, ranked by the Metascore point differential between the first and second film (from smallest to largest jump in score).
Original film:
▣ Pusher (1999)
It took director Nicolas Winding Refn seven years after the release of the 1999 film Pusher to come out with this sequel (of an eventual trilogy), in which the story shifts to Tonny (Mads Mikkelsen, reprising his role from the original). The Danish crime drama follows the character as he pieces his life back together post-prison and is just as much about the complicated relationship between a father and son as it is a story about the Copenhagen criminal underbelly.
“Pusher II works best when it's dwelling on the disconnect between Mikkelsen's lurid imagination and his disappointing reality, though it starts to fade when it becomes about the strained relationships of fathers and sons.” —Noel Murray, The A.V. Club
