20 Movie Sequels That Were Better Than the Originals
When it comes to movies, there is often a general feeling that sequels are never quite as good as the original. After all, follow-up films can often be pumped-out projects trying to recapture the magic of something great, and they often fall short as a result.
But not always. Sometimes, like in the case of the new Top Gun: Maverick, the sequel is even better received than the first film.
Read on to learn more about 20 movies that critics thought were indeed better than the initial project, ranked by the Metascore point differential between the first and second film (from smallest to largest jump in score).
Original film:
▣ Top Gun (1986)
When Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer debuted in director Tony Scott’s 1986 action flick Top Gun, the critics were mixed. (The original film only received a 50 Metascore.) Since then, many have discovered the film, and it has become something of a cult classic, so, with Maverick’s debut in 2022, the reaction has been a lot more positive. The film picks up 30 years after the events of Top Gun, and director Joseph Kosinski revisits Cruise’s character, who is now one of the Navy’s top aviators in charge of assessing the next generation for an upcoming mission.
“As insanely cool as the aerial dogfight scenes were in the original, the sequel’s action sequences level them up with unreal camera angles and nonstop tension.” —Brian Truitt, USA Today
