20 Movie Sequels That Were Better Than the Originals
When it comes to movies, there is often a general feeling that sequels are never quite as good as the original. After all, follow-up films can often be pumped-out projects trying to recapture the magic of something great, and they often fall short as a result.
But not always. Sometimes, like in the case of the new Top Gun: Maverick, the sequel is even better received than the first film.
Read on to learn more about 20 movies that critics thought were indeed better than the initial project, ranked by the Metascore point differential between the first and second film (from smallest to largest jump in score).

▣ Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979)
Beloved sci-fi series Star Trek made the jump to the big screen for the first time in 1979, a decade after the crew of the Enterprise flew their last mission for TV. But the Robert Wise-directed The Motion Picture earned lackluster reviews and didn't make as much money as Paramount had hoped. So it was up to its 1982 sequel to right the ship and preserve Trek as an ongoing franchise. Tense, exciting, and emotional where its predecessor was stately and languorous, The Wrath of Khan is considered by many longtime fans to be the best of all the Star Trek movies, thanks to a compelling story pitting Kirk and crew against Ricardo Montalban's titular villain, reprising his role from a 1967 TOS episode, "Space Seed."
“The second Star Trek movie is swift, droll and adventurous, not to mention appealingly gadget-happy. It's everything the first one should have been and wasn't.” —Janet Maslin, The New York Times
