20 Movie Sequels That Were Better Than the Originals
When it comes to movies, there is often a general feeling that sequels are never quite as good as the original. After all, follow-up films can often be pumped-out projects trying to recapture the magic of something great, and they often fall short as a result.
But not always. Sometimes, like in the case of the new Top Gun: Maverick, the sequel is even better received than the first film.
Read on to learn more about 20 movies that critics thought were indeed better than the initial project, ranked by the Metascore point differential between the first and second film (from smallest to largest jump in score).
Original film:
▣ Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011)
Director Matt Reeves takes over from Rise of the Planet of the Apes boss Rupert Wyatt in this sequel, which debuted three years after the 2011 franchise reboot. The film, which follows a nation of genetically evolved apes that are threatened by human survivors a decade after a simian flu wiped out most of humanity, scored notably higher than the first thanks to its emotionally complicated premise. (The leader of the apes, played by Andy Serkis, secretly hopes to create relationships between species.) Of course, strong performances by the likes of Serkis, Gary Oldman, Jason Clarke, and Judy Greer didn’t hurt when it came to higher marks.
“Eschewing a tidy wrap-up, Reeves doesn't leave us feeling manipulated, as so often happens in films like this. Instead, we want to know where the story goes from here, and that's no small accomplishment.” —Bill Goodykoontz, Arizona Republic
