A completely underrated album by the press and a lot of fans. "Zeitgeist" was THE perfect title for this album, atleast for this Pumpkins fan because I will remember that time, in part, for feeling plugged in with the band. Billy Corgan like all smart musicians understands his strengths and plays to them. The same clash of gloomy and uplifting, of heavy guitars and melodic vocals that made The Smashing Pumpkins take off in the first place is still evident here and it still sounds good

What's with the production...I can't get over how strange the mix is...the over layerd vocals sound wierd in some places and Billy's voice lacks the shrill bite that I'm used to. Again, in comparison to what else is out there...this album beats the crap out of it. All the new rockers could take a lesson from this stuff, but for S.Pumpkins status it's just okay. Well, it's really good, very creative, strong melodies...but the punch isn't all quite there. There are moments when the music sounds intensely beautiful, or intensely dark...but the moments are far between. At least the Pumpkins have turned from the mainstream mush they seemed destined for with they're last two albums. Maybe the new lineup is a benefit in that sense...in all I'm impressed that the two remaining members can still push the band to these levels. A little more TLC on these songs might have been welcome. Expand

It is unfortunate that critics have almost uniformly decided to measure this album against the highest achievements of the band. When assessed independently of the Pumpkins oeuvre, Zeitgeist proves to be a forceful and fun contribution to rock music. If any other band put out this record, it would be on all the critical year-end lists that matter.

Zeitgeist has a hypnotic spinning to it that drives me to keep listening for things I might of not caught the first time. It's hard work and hard sound should be considered for bringing Alternative Music back into the late 2000's. It's still the Pumpkins because they are influencing and rule breaking the current lull of cheep money making pop sound today. . .

This is their best CD since Mellon Collie. It's a no take prisoners, aggressive CD. I see it as a perfection of the metallic edge that they showed before. Only problem is, sometimes the fuzz goes on for too long without a change. There are some little quirks to be found, though, like the blues rhythm in "For God And Country."

Zeitgeist certainly offers a different kind of sound from older Pumpkins music. Nevertheless, Corgan and Chanberlain are quite successful in this new style of music. The more I hear the songs on this album, the more I like it. It's no Melancholy, but the album still rocks.

Ginger and Jeff are better instrumentalists than D'arcy and James, but it matters very little since Corgan almost never allows anyone but Jimmy and him to record tracks for albums (this goes back as far as Siamese Dream). Also, this records sounds nothing like Top 40 metal, emo, or hard rock, and the people who are claiming it does obviously haven't listened to the album at all, or are hoping they can make their mark on the world by trying to derail an album by bitching about it online. If you think this album is simple and trashy, try analyzing it with music theory and see for yourself that its not as simplistic as you may think. Fortunately, the album delivers the trademark pumpkins sound without sounding rehashed. The sound is loud and aggressive, full of a politically charged bombast that (argueably) constitutes the most socially 'relevent' material corgan has participated in. Sonically, its simple: - Fans of Gish, SD (PI) & MCIS will be utterly satisfied, proclaiming the album the bands best since 1995. - Fans of Adore, Machina & Machina 2 will find the album enjoyable but ultimately lacking. I agree the vocal mixing (and clarity in general) is something of an issue here. Likewise, the lack of diversity which characterized Mellon Collie, Siamese Dream etc. does make this less rewarding listening (maybe I'm getting old, but my ears tired of the same sound/dynamics across the first 11 tracks). The exception here, and the reason I gave it a 7, was that it's Billy Corgan and Jimmy Chamberlain playing, two of the best rock musicians of the last 20 years, so it still makes impressive listening. Especially in the album Adore. But this album, his lyrics are kind of stupid, I must admit. It sounds like he ran out of ideas so he just put something that rhymed. And two, some songs are just unnecessary. "Bleeding The Orchid", "Starz" and "For God And Country". Those tracks are just plain retarded. And maybe a couple more. But other than that, This is a rock and roll album that goes back to their early work. It sounds like a metal album. It is The Smashing Pumpkins heaviest album. Some great tracks are "United States" (best on the album), "Doomsday Clock" and "That's The Way (My Love Is)". "Taranlula" is fantastic, but it is nearly the only song on the album (with the exception of "Bleeding the Orchid") That has any dynamic to the song writing. People will trash "Pomp and Circumstance" but I think it is pretty ambitous, if not a bit dated sounded (Peter Gabriel anyone?). I can honestly say I can't stand it anymore. When I heard of this reunion I was excited...but as soon as I realized it was not without the other members...I lost all hope in it. Billy Corgan is living up to his own idea of who he should be. Producers Terry Date and Roy Thomas Baker are inevitably overshadowed by Corgan, who co-produced the album, and is probably responsible itr's crappish sound. The long and short of it this: it rocks more than Machina, but the song-writing is not as good. The first six songs on Zeitgeist are actually pretty awesome, but it's all down hill from there (with the exception of the beautiful, minimalistic "Neverlost"). Now I love "I am One" and "Zero" as much as anyone. But the genius and true beauty of the first three Pumpkin Albums was how they captured the full gamut of human emotions: Happy, sad, mellow, angry, and well melancholy. Look, Pumpkins were one of the only 90's alternative band to write several straight up love songs. Now we just have Billy singing his 'I'm not angry anymore' message of Zwan over music (and with a record cover) that makes expext the most aggressive album to date. His voice has gotten progressively downhill since Machina, bad on ZWAN, and terrible on The Future Embrace. Let's not even talk about his poor vocal performance on this one. Stay away from this album, it's not the Pumpkins you and I know and love. Expand

What happened to the Smashing Pumpkins? This is one of the worst cds I have ever heard. Gish and Siamese Dream were raw, innovative, spine tingling. They were albums that helped shape my mind in times of some bad relationships, and my lost 20 something, gen x punk mentality, while growing into manhood. Corgan was really trying in the 90s. Heart and soul, with everything he had. He was out to prove how good he could be, and he succeeded 3 fold. Not this time. He doesn't even come out of the3 creative box. Zeitgesit is uncreative, nonexciting and dull, except forTarantulla. The guitar and drums sound great, except for sounding the same on every single song. Lost is the Corgan rule of mixing up the sound of each song to stiffle a listeners boredom. The worst part however is the vocals. Which is shocking to me. Billy Corgan's vocals have always been over the top in the diversity of notes and range of pitch that he is able to hit. Like a runaway freight train sliding over glass. He doesn't do it here at all. 2 tones and pitches max. Droning, boring vocals with lyrics that he must have had Michael Bolton write for him. Just lame. What a dissapointment. He should listen to his old stuff because oviously forgot what he can do. Expand

Where is James and Darcy? Corgin needs these limiters to keep his direction focused. Overall, this album sounds like a pitiful attempt from Corgin to prove himself, when he has already done this. Horrible effort. Can't describe the pain I felt in my heart from having to finish listening to this mess. Truly garbage.

WOW!!! The Smashing Pumpkins have returned to sound exactly the same as every other top 40 rock band. No originality, no subtle wit, and well..... This album is uglier than my toilet after eating 10 microwave burritos

  1. Overall, Corgan's captivating effort to mine both the spirit of these turbulent times and the soul of his defining band is a smashing success.

Zeitgeist’s orgy of avalanche rhythms, cascading riffs and sky-licking guitar is as grandiose as ever (the solo on "Tarantula" sounds like a nuke hitting a Guitar Center), but the bombast is softened as Corgan reaches out for shame-sharing community.
  3. It's best treated as a curio in the Smashing Pumpkins' legacy; and for those who grew up on 'Today', '1979' and 'Ava Adore', you're better left with your memories.
