What a piece of garbage. Everything on this album (if you can really call it that) is nothing but distilled EGO. There is absolutely nothing of worth here and it a massive waste of your time and money. Spend both elsewhere, Kanye is washed up.

Short, messy, totally lacks anything that could be labelled a 'hit', disposable, awful guest vocals, sore thumb production choices, entirely throwaway. I think that's the statement? I think that's the point? All the same, pass...

A Trump supporter and someone who disparages mental health on his album cover. I couldn't make the rating go any lower, so a zero it is. I used to love Kanye despite his insanity and inability to connect with normal humans. No more.

Kanye is not a good hang anymore. Back in the day when he was controversial for being arrogant, I never minded it. I liked that he didn't play to the narrative. But now he seems fake deep. Dope production on this though.

This album could be great, and does have many great moments within it's songs. Most of the time, it's Kanye that gets in the way of his own greatness.

And while I do applaud the candidness about his mental illness, It almost feels like it is used as an excuse for Kanye's erratic and offensive behavior than a true discussion or expression of his psyche. In the end, it is crowded out by so much nonsense that it fails to actually make an impact and lift the album to level that it aspires to be at.

"Ye" is evidence that the Kanye West we've known and loved is no more and all we are left with is a shallow diva that seems blissfully unaware of how much of a fool he is making himself out to be.

Wow… why did I listen to this? To start this off, I listened to Kanye West’s “ye” because of two reasons: I thought I’d give rap music a try, and I was interested in listening to West’s latest, which has gotten mixed reviews from critics and I thought one of the songs was pretty funny upon listening to it’s very end with some people I know. ye on the other hand, was absolutely horrible. I don’t know what I was expecting, but certainly not drum tracks and synths with lots of explicit language, especially the use of the N-word. It just made me so uncomfortable and it was offensive. On the other hand, the only two slightly bright(er) spots in this album were Wouldn’t Leave and No Mistakes, since the music was actually decent, even if that’s not the music I would choose to listen to on a regular basis. I’m sure Kanye West has a lot of supporters, but after listening to ye, I’m definitely not a part of that list. This is the first downright negative review I have given to any album. Hopefully his next album is better. Highlights: none :(

Initial reaction of disappointment, and the album has not grown on me, I would describe my feelings as secondhand embarrassment at times.

While prior albums have been met with immediate excitement and hype, I found myself wanting the song to end, as I was holding out hope for the album and wanting the next song to be better. I finished the album without thinking this happened.

TLOP and Graduation had immediate hype for me, which eventually faded into doubt, then grew on me again. I am not experiencing this phenomenon, feels like a slog.

This is Kanye's shortest yet most focused record to date, providing us with not only great songs but also the most introspective view into Kanye's personal struggles with his mental illness. To sum it up, the first half of the record exhibits Kanye's manic part of his psyche, where he has his ego, suicidality, and sexuality unapologetically on display. The remaining 4 songs show his journey to freedom from his demons through his wife and kids, ending with Kanye's transformation from an egomaniacal, misogynistic celebrity to a loving, caring father who worries a lot about his kids and loves and appreciates his wife. Very wholesome vibes.

All of this is accomplished in under 24 minutes, all while delivering some of Kanye's greatest tracks of all time and most personal verses, wrapped up in a neat bow with the immaculate production and creativity displayed throughout the project. The only small nitpick I have is that the instrumentation is a bit bare in the first half of All Mine, which makes it just slightly underwhelming and lacking in impact in that specific part. Nonetheless, this is undoubtedly one of Kanye's best albums to date, and deserves much more attention and love from fans and audiences in general.

Also, I don't think the replay value for this album is high. I think the tracks are well-produced but also felt like it was rushed at the same time. The production for Pusha T's album is so much better than this album. I feel like his work harder on producing his other artist albums rather than his own. I do enjoy the risk that he took on some of the songs.

The other tracks on the album are filled with strong and funny moments. I think the best tracks on this album are the opening and closing tracks. Also, the track with Kid Cudi gives us a sample on how the album Kid See Ghost will sound. Looking forward to listening to more tracks produced by Kanye. I think the album is well-written but also felt like some moments on this album is so cringy. Some of the lines are so wack while the other is strong. This is a hard project to review because I am still confused about it. It's well-produced but it's not his best, it's probably his worst.

I think the real highlight of this album is 070 Shake. She needs a full-length album because she's amazing.

Since 2003, the release of a new Kanye album has always been the most exciting musical event of the year - and 15 years later he keeps on proving why. I've noticed it enough, especially now with every awards show being a PR stunt, for it to bear mention, as Kanyes newest works, esp the new Nas, after listening, have suffered in the critic department because of media bias- this is wrong. This is metacritic not meta-ethics, meta-politics. Clearly there is a line needed to be drawn. Expand

"Ye" is Kanye West's eighth studio album and his shortest by far, with only 7 tracks and about a 23-minute run time. On this album, Kanye speaks about topics such as mental health, drug addiction and the fears of being a father. Yet while he might be talking about serious issues, I feel like he barely scratches the surface. For example on the first track, 'I Thought About Killing You'"Ye" is Kanye West's eighth studio album and his shortest by far, with only 7 tracks and about a 23-minute run time. On this album, Kanye speaks about topics such as mental health, drug addiction and the fears of being a father. Yet while he might be talking about serious issues, I feel like he barely scratches the surface. For example on the first track, 'I Thought About Killing You' Kanye starts the song with a dark yet hilarious word passage that I thought opened the album up nicely. However, it's then followed up with a clustered verse where none of that dark-humor is present.

The track 'Yikes' Kanye talks about the prescription drug addiction he had and is stating it was 'frightening' and how he scares himself sometimes. The content of this song is good, but sonically it sounds the same as the stuff he was doing on “The Life Of Pablo” which I wasn't a fan of.
'All Mine' is probably the worst song on the album with its terrible chorus and its ridiculous lyrics.
'Wouldn't Leave' was another track where I thought he barely scratched the surface of anything serious. He brings up the issues we want him to talk about, but that's it, he doesn't expand on them whatsoever.
Kanye also sounded like he was reflecting all the mistakes he's done and seems to be brushing them off like “Oh, well Kim didn't leave me so I cant be in the wrong.”
'Ghost Town' is by far my favorite track on the album. Kid Cudi and 070 Shake did such great jobs with their features, Kanye himself sounds really good as well. This song was grand, detailed and everything you would expect from a Kanye West made song and was a major stand out on the album.
'Violent Crimes' is the last track. Where he talks about being a dad and the worries he has with his daughters growing up. All around great song.

While I think this is one of Kanye's most personal albums, I don't think he wasn't able to expand on these topics well enough for me to feel anything. Saying that the sound of these songs were not bad at all and I will be revisiting tracks like No Mistakes, Ghost Town, and Violent Crimes.

Kanye didn't have to do a bangers record, but the second half of this thing is almost "ballad heavy". I suspect that aspects of this record were thrown together. Kanye's line about his "slavery was a choice" statement indicate that he recorded at least some of his vocals within the past couple of weeks. Also, "Ghost Town" might be the most awful, obnoxious track in Kanye's career. Cudi sounds like he's doing a Chad Kroeger impression. Just bad.

Very melodic album which shows Kanye in a new light. He seems more vulnerable but at the same time stronger than only one year ago. Thus 'YE' is a return to a more careful sound that is not afraid to tell you how life can go both up and down all in the matter of a minute. Brilliant construction and definately an underated classic.

Despite this, some tracks were not fully executed especially the first track, where he is speaking for around a minute. I'd understand skits and interludes in an album like TLOP, but this was a too short album for time to be wasted. In my opinion, this is one of Kanye's lesser greater albums, but in saying that it is still an amazing album compared to other rap albums. I just think Kanye put too much focus in Daytona to worry about his own album, but that is what all great producer's do like Dr. Dre, who instead of advancing his career made music for the likes of 50 cent and Eminem. Therefore, this album for me would be a 78 which would round up to an 8 out of 10. To Kanye's standards the album was not too great, but compared to other hip hop albums, it was an excellent project and I am comparing this to other hip hop albums. Strewth. Expand

With Yikes being the familiar (dare I say vintage) Kanye “line them up & knock them down”, Ghost Town sporting the melo, airy and vocally-focused “stop and look around” vibe.... and then All Mine, which almost feels like it has dashes of Tyler the Creator sprinkled in its latter half. All to say (flowery pseudo critic adjectives aside), I thoroughly enjoyed listening to the album. Though the tracks are sampled and produced fabulously; the bars have departed entirely from Ye's egoistic, lyrically complex style. It's unsubtle, disturbing, and feels like a minimal effort on Ye's part. This, not to mention the delusional social commentary, make for a disappointing experience especially if you're someone that dislikes that gospel-esque sing-songy beats.

The problem is, no amount of incredible sampling can save this album from the fact that it sounds incredibly half-assed. Sure, Kanye is known for his rough-around-the-edges artistry, a factor that works to his benefit on albums like 'The Life of Pablo.' The difference, however, is that on albums like 'TLOP,' this roughness sounds like it stems from a thirst and ambition to create something great, a thirst that can never be quenched; on 'Ye,' it sounds like Kanye got cocky and imposed this one-month deadline on himself for the sole purpose of proving to his ego that he could create an album in such a short time span. It is an impressive feat indeed - but that alone does not make this album a good one. Lyrically, it's easily his weakest album - and it's not close. There are the typical Kanye-isms we all crave, but they are surrounded by lines and lines of cheesy, superficial lyrics that don't come close to the level we expect from the Kanye we all have come to know and love. While the production and sampling are incredible as per usual, the songs suffer from a blatant and painful brevity. On Kanye's first GOOD Music project of the summer - Pusha-T's 'Daytona' - for example, the songs were cohesive and nuanced enough that the album, just seven tracks in length, feels MUCH longer than its 21-minute run time, in a great way. 'Ye' feels like it's over in 15 minutes, and leaves the listener with much to be desired - not in the sense of wanting more, but more so wishing for a do-over. In the end, I can't help but feel that, just maybe, we've arrived at the point in Kanye's career where so much new ground has been tread that there simply is not much more left to tread. I hope to God I'm wrong - and if there's any one person who can prove it and come back from a place like that, it's Kanye. One thing is for certain, though - 'Ye' the first Kanye album we did not need. (5.2/10) Expand

Kanye gives us 7 beautiful tracks with near zero flaws about mental illness and family. It's a spiritual awakening of sorts and an extremely important album for kanye himself. Feels like t's made for himself and real fans more than for the publics acceptance like he did for My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. Easily the most personal record he's done, it can be an emotional listen for kanye fans.

The first 3 tracks are manic and all over the place. Adopting Yeezus and Pablo style personas and sound on mental health, loneliness, ego, lust, and depression. "I Thought About Killing You" is striking right off the bat talking about his ego and possible bi polar reference then has a few words for his haters and struggling friendships. "Yikes" is a full on manic episode about mental health, and referencing his "breakthrough." "All Mine" is the catchiest song sounding like it could've been on Life Of Pablo with Kanye throwing comical bars on social commentary and sex. "Wouldn't Leave" separates the album with an apology dedicated to Kim. It seems so personal to the point it felt no one else but her was supposed to hear it. The last 3 tracks change tone completely, they feel nostalgic and soulful; songs about family and redemption. No Mistakes is classic kanye straight outta 2007. Ghost Town is the most beautiful track on the album, with an innovative sound mixing 60s pop and pete rock. Violent Crimes ends it with a track dedicated to his daughter, personal favorite.

My only complaint is i wish it was 11 or 12 songs! I believe the reception would've changed so much if that were the case. The other Wyoming projects produced from Kanye have a very big production that the albums feel full. This is the only one that is raw and stripped down so i do think that effects the 7 tracks feeling incomplete in a way. Yeezy season and Good Fridays are back!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This album has some great songs that feel really good. I listened to each song twice and spent time thinking about each one. I enjoyed listening to it overall but I am only gonna keep 3 out of the 7 on my music play-list.

    "I Thought About Killing You"
The first half is not really music. He is just talking. Its kinda like poetry. When he starts rapping its not bad but I didn't care for it. He has a few nice lines but that's it. I just don't think its a song so its probably my least favorite in the album.

    "Yikes"
Pretty good song. Lots of good lines. I personally don't care for it too much but I think its good overall. I could see others enjoying it.

    "All Mine"
The best song in the album in my opinion. I like the beat and flow. Would recommend %100.

    "Wouldn't Leave"
It's a song about Kanye's personal life. He is saying how he knew Kim wouldn't leave even though he has been controversial. The song itself isn't bad. I like it a bit less than "Yikes" because there are parts that ruin the flow.

    "No Mistakes"
I don't like this one. I think he is talking about Kim again but there is no substance to it. My second least favorite song in the album.

    "Ghost Town"
I think this is a good song. Its got a good flow. Not my favorite but its one of the good songs.

    "Violent Crimes"
This is a really good song. Its my second favorite. It's Kanye talking about his kids and worrying about guys objectifying them. There is one part at the very end that ruins it. It's just talking and that sucks if its on a big play-list because it ruins the flow. The song is still really good.

So in conclusion. I think the good stuff is: "Violent Crimes", "Ghost Town", and "All Mine"
The rest didn't do anything for me.

Kicking off with "I Thought About Killing You", where Ye discusses his thoughts of taking his own life, his bipolar. The production on this track, and all the others as well, is unique and makes the album much more interesting, greatly adding to the tone each song gives off. He speaks the first half of the track, sort of thinking out loud, towards the end of which he says he should "Say something good so it doesn't come off bad" and that if he was trying to "relate it to more people i would say I'm struggling with loving myself, but thats not the case". This is followed by Yikes, where Kanye addresses his God complex as well as the thoughts in his head. He talks about the controversy he's created leading up toe release. For classic Ye fans, this is probably the only song that will be enjoyable, which is a big thing with this album, the tracks are more lyrical and emotionally driven than they are driven to be these Game Changing Kanye BANGERZ that he has been know to drop throughout his career. All Mine is a simple beat, great production, for the most part lyrics that don't fit the theme of the album, all around decent track. On Wouldn't Leave Ye starts to talk more about controversies and what this negative attention has done to him and his family. He's kind of saying on the chorus he knew the people that saw these and would get angry at him for saying these things would not go away, would still listen to him and the record. On No Mistakes he seems to have this happier, more carefree attitude that he hasn't had the rest of the record. He seems more content and accepting of what gets fired at him. Following that is Ghost Town which is easily going to be one of the best singles of the year. He talks about pretty much everything here, from the controversies to to his bipolar, and 070 Shake's verse at the end about "nothing hurting anymore" closes out the track very very nicely. Closing out the record we have Violent Crimes where Kanye talks about being savage and ruthless until a child come along. Talking about people being crazy until their daughter comes into world and becoming protective of their kid, telling her not to "grow up in a hurry". The album closes out with a voicemail from Nicki Minaj, spitting a couple lines from earlier in Kanye's verse, asking him to make sure the fans hear it.

Overall the album is an emotional journey, the thing as a whole after a couple listens can even be a little tear jerking. The production, as i said previously is really really good, original, not like much I've heard this year at least. Kanye's voice, the way he portrays his emotions, he sounds beat down, broken, listening closely you can feel the raw emotions he has throughout. Even his features compliment the tones on each track, Cudi and shake on Ghost Town especially, as well as everyone on Violent Crimes. I personally believe that eventually people will begin to warm up to this record and realize this is one of Ye's best, if not the best thing he's put out to date. This easily going to be in my Top 10 of the year and overall a very strong 9/10.

Eight studio albums deep into an already unmatched career, Kanye West still prevails as one of the most ambitious figures in hip-hop in this compact seven-track project. It's the only reason that I don't think he'd never be able to be as good as he was in the 2000s (and 2010). Ye gives us an intimate look at Kanyes state of mind, sometimes the brutal truth of what he thinks about in "I Thought About Killing You" saying that he sometimes thinks really bad things, like really really bad things. And this is almost a guarantee in a Kanye project, the album sounds great. Sonically it's very pleasant to listen to and the beats and production are so so good. I feel very strongly that Violent Crimes is the best closer out of any Kanye project we've seen yet. 070 shakes voice on this track is so so pretty. Kanye definitely still has his ear for music because that track is one of his best. Ye still remains as one of the more intimate looks on Kanyes mind and his very personal thoughts. "Yikes", and "All Mine" truly capture the thought process of Kanyes dark side of his mind. Ye is one of Kanyes most important projects he's ever put out, a lot of the lyrics in this album are easily interpretive about his family life and his darkest thoughts. While some of the lyrics don't exactly hit home and the album isn't seamlessly together this still is considered a great listen and a great album by me. ye has certainly earned it's 9/10 Expand

Overhated for no reason... Kanye chose quality over quantity, also I loved this album and I think it's one of the best Kanye project, because it talks about how hard it is to live with the bipolar disorder. Over-hated for no reason.
    Also there are no skips!

Every song is strong and very direct. Album goes into Kanye’s mental health at the time and makes this Kanye’s most personal record. Beautiful.

It's such a boring album! That's all, just boring, nothing special. Sorry...

If you track Kanye's career you can clearly see the gradual decrease in the quality of his music: it has nothing worth listening to left to say.

Unoriginal work, it feels like Kanye was trying to hard but the results did not pay out.

The album brings nothing special, just another attempt to say something original without the power to follow through with it.

This album covers the definitely questionable mental health of Kanye West. He talks about his recently diagnosed bipolar disorder, hence the album cover. Featuring only 7 tracks, this album does a solid job of covering the purpose of this album. The production and chorus is some of Kanye's best, and he uses the features on this album near perfectly, however songs like I Thought About Killing You can totally ruin the vibe. Overall, the album is a solid 7 in my opinion. Expand

Generic music, nothing special, typical Kanye egomania top to bottom, not worth the time.

It’s all right. Really short, which is good. Most of the tracks on here are fine, like, pretty standard songs. But then you have ‘Ghost Town’ which is no doubt one of Kanye’s all time best.

    There’s also ‘All Mine’ though.

Ye by Kanye West is one of my favorite albums of 2018.
This album has no filler unlike projects such as MBDTF, TCD, and Yeezus and in 7 songs and 23 minutes
Kanye unpacks all of his mental health issues with some we found out in projects such as MBDTF ye experiences more with one example as "violet crimes" were Kanye talks about parenting. The thing I do not enjoy about ye is the rushed

The thing I do not enjoy about ye is the rushed beats that sound like they were done in under 5 minutes in most of the tracks. PARTYNEXTDOOR does not need to be on here either. Over all this album is really strong but not much to say about it. 8/10

Even today, "ye" is one of the most intimate albums of our age. In previous albums, Kanye has deliberately chosen to show off his power, his confidence, and his success. What I love about "ye" so much is that it's consistent. Kanye only discusses his hardships, depression, suicidal urges, etc. The opening track lets the listener immediately know what they're in for. Such songs as "No Mistakes" and "Ghost Town" fill me with euphoria in the same way as "Reborn" does (from KIDS SEE GHOSTS). I don't know how else to word it other than: it morphs somber into strength. When I think back to this album, it just feels like an 10/10, it earned that score. It has its imperfections but they make me love the LP so much more! As a final note, I find a lot more enjoyment out of this album when listening to DAYTONA right before it, and KIDS SEE GHOSTS right after. Expand

Pretty good album. I like all of the songs a lot. But also All Mine is a very iffy song to me, sometimes I like it and sometimes I don't. Kinda weird.

ye is an average album with some good songs, some bad songs, and some songs that will clearly be spun millions of times. The problem is that "average" has never been good enough for Kanye West nor should it be.

For all his power as a motivating force it’s perhaps inevitable that Ye proves weakest of the first four. Left to his own devices West sounds bewildered, somewhere between awe and exhaustion. [Aug 2018, p.63]

Ye can feel uneven, sometimes boring, and more indulgent than usual, but it's a fascinating peek into West's psyche.
