As a voyage of discovery, WE WERE JUST HERE ticks all the right boxes. It will be interesting to see where Just Mustard are headed next but for now, this marks the pinnacle of their careers so far.

It sounds like the group learned all of the right lessons from their stint supporting The Cure on tour. It’s a mode that suits them quite well, resulting in what just might be their most impressive work yet.

Album number three from Just Mustard is a more three-dimensional, glorious noise – reaching for euphoria while capturing the rollercoaster of comedowns and the spaces in between; driving melody through the malaise on a psych-driven neon bullet train.

‘DANDELION’ is pleasant if forgettable among the maelstrom elsewhere, and the sadness of ‘SOMEWHERE’ threatens to sink into lethargy, but overall, third time is largely lucky for Just Mustard.

Much of the record takes the well-traveled Just Mustard path of slamming guitar pedals together until a mind-melding guitar sound summersaults out the other end. This process may as well be the Ted Lasso Way for shoegaze, but few others can boast the ear for melody and a measured control of the chaos like Lovecraftian, tortured Blondie.

There is an urgency heard in each song that completes ‘WE WERE JUST HERE’, as if to grasp at a fleeting emotion before it fades away.

At times, Katie Ball's high-pitched vocals bring a somewhat incongruous phantasmagorical element. But they bring the tunes, too. [Dec 2025, p.101]
