This is, to a degree, a different kind of music than what we heard in her last studio album. Here, it's more diverse, though most of them create the same atmosphere. The vocals are quite enchanting, thanks in no small part to Lana's voice, which is just as beautiful, sad, and eerie as it has always been.

The vocals are quite enchanting, thanks in no small part to Lana's voice, which is just as beautiful, sad, and eerie as it has always been.

While these things contribute to making this the great album that it is, the lyrics are what truly elevate it. Full of melancholy, reflection, and nostalgia. An album about broken people, love, happiness, the America of decades ago, and the women who inhabited it.

Perhaps my only problem with this album is how it - sometimes - felt repetitive.

Deciding what my favorite tracks in this album are is a bit meaningless. There's too many of them. Besides, the album is best experienced as a whole. Also, try to get the deluxe edition; it has four bonus tracks, two of which are pretty great, and the other two are still worth it.

I liked Born to Die when i heard it a year or two ago, and became very excited for her career and what she might have in store for us. With Dan Auerbach as producer, this album exceeded it's predecessor in more ways than one. I'm still as excited as i previously was, and i hope she gets to create more wonderful work.

Overall, Lana Del Rey's second full length album is a major success. Though, I still prefer the first effort, because while it was almost as dark as this one, there was a certain lightness to it that lifted the dark cloud from the music. This album is entirely dreary. Everything has a dark rain cloud hanging over it and while all of the songs are beautiful, that can get tiresome at certain points. The tracklisting here is also really well done, as the songs all flow very well into one another, though that also leads to some of the songs almost sounding the same at times, which is a negative for this one, as a few of the songs feel and sound the same as one another. But, since I like those songs, I do not really mind all that much. "Cruel World", "Money Power Glory", and "Black Beauty", are really the standout tracks here for me. Expand

Getting Auerbach on this record was the best thing she could have done. This is a very confident, bold album. Dan has managed to draw a little more intensity from her and she actually sings - like really sings - on Ultraviolence. It's a near flawless album. "Sad Girl" is a throwaway track imo, however. But otherwise it is brilliant.

Upon first listen, Ultraviolence is a complete musical departure from her debut. Produced by Dan Aurebach of The Black Keys, Ultraviolence has replaced the bombastic string and melodramatic orchestral climaxes with understated, pulsing guitar riffs, echoing drums and various layers of Del Rey’s now totally confident and poised vocals. The album opener, ‘Cruel World’ sets the tone for the rest of the record; a slow burning song featuring purposely-imperfect vocals that forces the listener to experience the hurt and dystopian world that Del Rey does. This is nothing new – Born To Die provided the same offering – however the subdued tone of Ultraviolence is much more fitting with its oppressed and dark thematic nature.

Elsewhere, lead single, ‘West Coast’ provides a relatively upbeat and gritty sound in comparison to the rest of the album, and ‘Money Power Glory’ showcases Del Rey’s unique and astounding vocal range. ‘F***** My Way To the Top’ demonstrates that – unlike Born To Die – less is more, with Del Rey’s silk-like vocals floating above a pulsing beat and faint guitar strums. ‘Old Money’ is the most Lana Del Rey song that Lana Del Rey has ever made; an absolutely stunning ode 1960s America with herself reminiscing the “sunset, small towns… red racing cars”, and ‘Flipside’, a slow-burning Western-influenced track which – had it been around during the 90s – would have been perfect for the epic yet tragic final scene of Thelma & Louise.

The album is not without its flaws, however; Del Rey’s cover of ‘The Other Woman’ doesn’t fit whatsoever with the atmosphere the rest of the album has conjured up until that closing track, and provides an incredibly underwhelmed finish to an album that sounded well thought out. Some of the lyrics are questionable and grow irritating, such as Del Rey repeating "dope and diamonds" sixteen - yes, sixteen - times during 'Money Power Glory', and there are certain tracks that beg for more of a climax than they are given.

Ultraviolence, then, is an overall winner; the stripped-back, low-key and understated burning progressions of the songs create an intense, unique and totally encapsulating experience. Whilst there are missteps, it is a massive step forward for an artist that is consistently panned for being a one-time act.

I was a big fan of the first album "Born to Die" but Ultraviolence tops it. There is a uniqueness to what Lana Del Rey is producing. Her voice, phrasing and general sound are all individual. Her voice, phrasing and general sound are all individual. She sounds incredibly organic and authentic (an irony considering she has been labelled as "manufactured"). The subject matter of the songs themselves are interesting and engaging. It's not often that a collection of songs (as in the first album) written purely from a woman's perspective, can be so enticing as to draw the ear of a male audience, but Del Rey achieves this - no-one is safe from the allure of her voice!

This second album is well-paced, reminiscent and even more damaged than the first. There is a sadness pervading through the songs, a rueful resignation or poor choices made and lives taking unfavourable paths. There's also a dignity and a defiance. A heroic trashiness if you will.

This is an outstanding collection of tracks, never pandering to the radio crowd. When one looks at the other female icons of the day (GaGa, Beyonce, Shakira, Nicki Minaj, Rihanna, etc) and the shallowness and vacuity of what they produce, it becomes clearer that Lana Del Rey is the only one flying the flag for true female artists these days. She deserves all the credit in the world for this and for the affecting experience of listening to her music.

The record is great and it is way better than "Born to Die". Lana's voice is stunning and I love the orchestration. Also the great Dan Auerbach from the Black Keys produces the majority of the songs and helps by playing a variety of instruments. It's a must buy for both Lana's fans.

This disc opens up with a gem-of-an-anthem called Cruel World that is long and powerful. Ultraviolence is another of my favorites. Shades of Cool and Brooklyn Baby provide a slight/nice change of pace, and some light-heartedness to soften the mood a bit, and then West Coast really puts it into full swing. Sad Girl is a lovely song that you may get lost in. Pretty When You Cry I also enjoy, as well as Money Power Glory. F***ed My Way to the Top is SO satisfying, in the same vein as Cola was, if you're into that type of thing (Lord knows I am). Old Money is a really sweet song and quite emotional, and The Other Woman is a real change of pace, right in time for, in my opinion, the big surprise on the disc: Black Beauty. This is a huge, sweeping anthem. Guns and Roses and Florida Kilos are fine as well, but not at the top of my list. I would have scored this album a 10 but i'm allowing her some room to grow in the next album, which I understand she is already thinking about. God, I hope so.

If you are a fan and loved BTD, you will love Ultaviolence. It's a little slower and lacking some of the up tempo beats of BTD, but that is not a bad thing. Lana Del Rey makes beautiful and emotive music that is intoxicating and she is in peak form here. If anything, Ultraviolence has an equal or even more amount of feeling and emotion than BTD. I would highly recommend Ultraviolence to anyone who is a fan of Lana and her type of music. I think this album will catapult her to a whole new level of success. I ordered the deluxe mp3 with three extra songs and was glad I did. Buy it, you won't be disappointed.

Lana has developed far more vocal confidence and hit the ground running on this second album. I have a feeling it will achieve Cult status in time and critical acclaim. The lyrical content is both sombre and playful, it is deliciously dark and the freedom in musicianship invokes a band feel reminiscent of the 70's.

The album captivated audiences with Del Rey's low, smokey vocals and large, climatic orchestral booms. It seems that with her sophomore album Ultraviolence, Del Rey has traded in some of the orchestra for guitars and brought her songbird-worthy upper register to the forefront.

I can see a lot of Lizzy Grant in this album. (And if you don't know what I mean by that, Lana Del Rey's birth name is Elizabeth Grant; she tried to launch a music career under her given name but it fell flat.) The record takes a lot of hints from her hundreds of unreleased tracks, but with hints of what she learned from Born To Die and Paradise. Personally, I don't care for a lot of her unreleased material, but the works here on Ultraviolence are perfectly polished. However, this change could leave many music lovers that have only heard Born To Die scratching their heads and asking what happened to their alternative pop princess.

Dan Auerbach's influence on this album is especially present on the first five tracks of the album; those tracks in particular are very open and sound as if they were recorded in just a few takes. There are few imperfections here and there and it leaves for a very unique sound; it's definitely not bad by any means, it just makes the songs seem raw and pure. And lyrically, I believe that corruption display throughout this album makes the content of Born To Die seem like child's play. Del Rey's debut focused on alcohol dependence, love, and heartbreak, while Ultraviolence is packed with drugs, sex, scandal, lying, cheating, and (obviously) violence.

In thirty second snippets, this album is lackluster. When I first heard the snippets of the album that were released on an online music store, I feared that this album would go down in my books as a three-star effort; a back-step from her debut. However, the majority of the tracks on Ultraviolence are well over four minutes long; each track swells and blossoms over time, which cannot be heard in just thirty seconds. Each ambient track must be heard in full to comprehend the true beauty of this album. This new-found alternative rocks sound will draw new people in, but the lyrical content of this album and the ideas and concepts behind it are going to steer other people away; I'm sure she's already realized that. It's an album soaked in corruption; it's not going to be pretty. When you take a step back and appreciate it for what it is, Ultraviolence truly is a gem.

This work has nothing to do with this gorgeous movie. It is an album that has to do with painful love, domestic violence, fame, rumours and the New York based artist's feelings about the other side of U.S.A.
Actually, the lyrics' content is not much different from her Lizzy Grant's first album under the persona of Lana Del Rey, Born to Die. But this is not a problem, when the music, the rythms, the style and the atmosphere have become more mysterious and rock far away from some hip-hop and pop songs such as "Diet Mountain Dew" and "Off To The Races", which are amazing, but "mature" enough.
Most of the songs are making love with the guitars of Dan Auerbach, producer of the album, and Rick Nowels in songs like "Shades of Cool", which contains a great solo playing the role of a bridge with the chaotic vocals by Del Rey.
"Ultraviolence" begins with "Cruel World" which is a well-chosen introduction of the album, since it creates an atmosphere of melancholia and mystery and then "Ultraviolence" comes making it clear that Lana Del Rey is a complicated soul different from the others. An honest soul.
In general, the album is a strong proof that Lana is not a girl aiming to be on the top of the charts and that she simply expresses her thoughts via the music with some really poetic lyrics.

I'm not so sure why metascore of this album is only 74 , for me this or Lust For Life is the best Lana's album to date. Love the lyrics, the darkness of the album. Favorite tracks: Brooklyn Baby | Least favorite: The Other Women (it just didn't fit the album atmosphere it should have been on Honeymoon I think)

The album explores an entire range of emotions and themes, but the most prominent is by far the abusive relationship which resonated with love. 'Ultraviolence' is spectacular and brought Lana to a higher level of artistry and lyricism, but not perfect at all. She experiments different musical genres and confirms that she can sing in any genre and still do it perfectly. Ultraviolence still has some few negative points, but it definitely is one of the best works from Del Rey.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Why Lana hits it out of the park on Ultraviolence, the answer is pretty simple: she took a concept and transformed it into a beautiful and precise piece of art. Featuring a killer intro and a stellar tracklist, Ultraviolence is a perfect blend of rock, alternative, indie, and atmospheric pop. It reminds us of the cassette you could see any gothic or sad kids depicted in those lame stereotypical high school flicks listening to all day long. The only thing we could take away from one of Lana's best works is a rather lazy finale from such an outstanding album. Expand

The tracks all feel thematic in sound but doesn't over crowd Del Rey's voice, over production, a frequent distraction in her debut album which shocked audiences when they heard a more different, more deeper voice whenever this pop star performed live. Lana Del Rey has a unique voice; this singer doesn't belt out her songs like the pop singers you see nowadays; she sings her highs beautifully like she does when she lays her hand on a cigarette, the light and free feeling one would get once the smoke is released from your lips. She sings her lows like she does when she's swaying her head, her hips and staring deep into your eyes with her pouty lips. Lana Del Rey's live performances at concerts are the real deal, this girl can sing, compared to her performances at open bars and quiet talk shows. Her tracks for 'Ultraviolence' are dark, unique, inspired and, most of all, filled with thematic elements making her whole album feel rich and authentic. She sings her tracks as if she sings to her live audiences at a concert; confident, assured and loved by all. My personal favorites are 'West Coast' (instead of building to an upbeat chorus, it takes a slow tempo turn making this track feel different), 'Shades of Cool' (James Bond, anybody?), 'Brooklyn Baby' (doleful sound, changes the tone of the album just a shade bit lighter), and the two tracks; 'Guns & Roses', 'Cruel World'. The one thing that I have with this album is the fact that her songs are so walloped in a deep dark world of the singer's depression (controlling men, being a mistress, waiting on love, long distance relationships, 'Drugs, Money & Glory), some tracks should be a bit more lively and perfectly timed like 'Brooklyn Baby' instead of delving into an enjoyable listen to sleep fest. Overall, Lana Del Rey at her ripest. Expand

If the first Lana's try was a mixture of genres, styles and movements, this second strike appears more realistic, more steady, more mature. Which of them is better? It sounds amazing without saying too much and is probably as good as anything that follows on the album. The title track follows and is another track that is sounds stripped back yet is highly produced. It has a hazy, chilled vibe yet there is darkness looming in the sound which mirrors the lyrical content, ("he hit me and it felt like a kiss"). This is a description that could be applied to the record as a whole. "Shades of Cool" is based on a slowed down James Bond theme and you could easily imagine this track being a Bond song. "Brooklyn Baby" keeps with the aesthetics of the album, big and cinematic. **** My Way to the Top" is the standout of the 2nd half of the album. This is an album about style and texture rather than necessarily about great songwriting, although there is some of that there too. I did feel that the songs lack variation as it goes on. It is a record made for great speakers or headphones to fully appreciate the work done on this in the studio. The whole album sounds huge, lovely guitar tones mixed perfectly with unintrusive slow building bass lines and drums.

Lana has stepped her game up with this album. Adding a blues rock feel to her otherwise poppy synth style is the perfect blend. There are still problems with her identity but a huge step in the right direction.

its another flawed record from Lana in my opinion. Simply for the fact that the songs feel a little samey the further through the album you get.. but that doesn't necessarily mean that the tracks themselves are.
If it makes sense, I personally feel that every song is well written and put together (if not for the lyrics) and all the choruses are big, powerful and even beautiful at times.

A long time fan of Del Rey's music (from the Ray Days to all the unreleased and leaked tracks), I am proud to say that Ultraviolence does not disappoint. Ultraviolence has the scope of a cinematic western movie that has been dreamed up in the dark hours of night when we are left to our own devices and forced to reflect, and this album is obviously a deeper reflection on Lana than in Born to Die, and what is more, it is beautiful in it's ambition as it aspires to overcome the shortcomings of it's predecessor. The record is a mix of low rock melodies and anticlimaxes, which short bursts of exuberant outcries that break through the shades of gray in a brilliant fire that makes even the worst songs on this album so brilliant. Inspired by the classic 'A Clockwork Orange', Lana creates her own modern classic as the voice of the album resounds long after the song has finished.

The leading singles of this album underwhelmed, yet songs such as 'Old Money', 'Black Beauty', 'Money Power Glory', and 'Cruel World' shine brightly in the dark night Lana has constructed with her vocals and the unique sound of this album; yet, the album becomes tiresome in it's constant use of heavy background vocals that sound much more freshman than junior in that, they tend to wash out the power of her main vocals. What is more, this album features much less chorus than Born to Die, and much more narrative, original and inventive storytelling that allows for a much finer experience all together I think, this is not to say that the chorus is no longer the main mode of transport for the delivery of this album, but it does take somewhat of a backseat in Ultraviolence.

The lyrics of each song, though, do tend to fall into Old Paul's (Video Games) in that, while these lyrics are far less fantastical than those in Born to Die, they do tend to become airy and overly dark and cliche. What is more, for all of it's opulence, this album is repetitive in it's songs as Lana presents the same story in some form or fashion in every other song, such as loving an older man in 'Shades of Cool' and 'Brooklyn Baby'. This causes Lana to become self-cliched as she continues to use the same ideas as though to invent a Lanaverse akin to that of Stephen King and James Joyce as she continues to build on and construct the artificial history of Lana Del Rey which is veiled with created experiences as well as subtle references to her very own life, yet it is much less obvious in comparison to Born to Die which was 'The Hobbit' to her 'Lord of the Rings' as she introduced us to her persona that we have fallen in love with. Multiple tracks on the album also tend to borrow the style of West Coast the first single from this album and could easily be the title track, and this becomes somewhat bothersome because it creates a very easily tired musical experience that could cause some to continuously bounce between this album and Born to Die as I have.

Overall, fans of Del Rey will enjoy this sequel which shows that Lana has become both more confident in her work and much more adept in her conception and creation, even so, if you are much more use to her vocals and sound in Born to Die, the sudden shift to an even moodier and darker Lana will take some getting used to. Ultraviolence is beautifully dark and hauntingly magical in it's artificial realism, and that's what makes it so great.

Wow! I didn't think Lana could do Born to Die again, and you know what, she didn't! and I'm kind of surprisingly relieved. To be honest, I WANTED BORN TO DIE AGAIN! I didn't think Lana could do Born to Die again, and you know what, she didn't! and I'm kind of surprisingly relieved. To be honest, I WANTED BORN TO DIE AGAIN! I mean, I liked the simplicity and melancholy of her first album but here with Ultraviolence Lana hasn't just dished out more of what she thought we'd all like, No! she's taken her shtick of morose pop but sprinkled just a little bit of sophisticated, hopeful colour throughout it, partly, due to some great floating vocals during a lot of the choruses. But does Lana lose her apathetic sound from this little spark of brightness? I don't think so at all, if anything it makes the comedown feel so much lower. That and each song seems to either slow down during the chorus(Brooklyn Baby, Shades of Cool) or speeds up (West Coast). It's this constant change in pace which TELLS the listener how to feel, and it’s exactly this constant flux in mood which I wasn't expecting!

Lets be honest with ourselves, we all think we know Lana's sound and we listen to her precisely because we like to indulge in our own fantasies of self pity, of which Lana's previous album Born to die did so well; Self Pity and apathy. But even Lana is thoughtful of the fact that there is so much self pity we can come to accept from a multi million dollar star. because really, an artist whose theme is based on woe and sadness eventually loses there creditability once they start to become (even more) wealthy.

Instead of treating myself to the self induced moody state I've come to expect from Lana, I was instead forced to prick up my ears, and then suddenly calm down as each song on Ultraviolence constantly shifted from lull to high. This is an album that demands your attention in its own subtle way as it unexpectedly turns from hope to sorrow, constantly teasing the listener from one state to another. And this is exactly what this album is all about, that is; you have to be prepared to listen to it. It's not an intense album per se, but it's more thoughtful than her last, so just be prepared (and you'll be rewarded!) Lana still has that washy jazzy Twin Peaks sound that can be heard in the percussion and groaning cello, but there is a brightness in the guitar and light strings that is slightly more noticeable and which adds a great bitter sweet contrast. I think this is especially pronounced in "Old Money" or "Shades of cool" which almost sounded like it was going to burst out into a bond song with those opening chords, but then her angelic vibrato voice kicks in with that hint of contrived imperfection and really hits the spot in the way we've come to expect from her previous work, but with a little extra. Lana is really coming into her own with this second album (third? if you count Paradise) and she is by no means a one trick pony.

I really think Lana is pushing her passive listeners with this one. I mean, the fanbase with grow to like it, they're just committed that way. But I'm not too sure if any of these songs stick out as radio friendly. Which leads me to my overall summary, and that is; Ultraviolence doesn't have the instant wow factor of Born to Die, but really, how could she ever make an album that sounded even sadder, yet at the same time still retain the pop elements that helped establish her unique, accessible sound? Anything else would just be venturing into experimental jazz territory, which might be applaudable, but it's not what people expect from Lana. For those who take the time I think this album might provide a longer and more rewarding listening experience than Born to Die with its more sophisticated production and thoughtful music composition, as well as Lana's obviously developing vocal talent.

a dark album that stays consistent with its theme. the title track and lead single 'west coast' and definitely favorite tracks. however, i did find the later part of the album to be filler. brooklyn baby sounds a bit like summertime sadness.

Worst album of Lana, this really causes me sleep, the songs appear to be identical and are too few who are saved, I hope it improves a lot in the next album.
    Highlights: Florida Kilos and Ultraviolence
Lows: Sad Girl and Black Beauty

A moody, sultry, sexy, luscious offering from Del Rey. The album is a touch somber, but in a 'oh-so-good' way. The dark and seductive vibe just pulls you right in. One can try and resist, but the sheer magnetism of Del Rey's beautiful charms is simply irresistible.

After listening to this album, I realised it's not that bad but it's not thaaaaaaat good. Anyway, Ultraviolence shows that Lana kinda grew up since Born to Die. And I like it.

Underwhelming ending aside, it’s fair to say that Del Rey (and her collaborators) have more than risen to the challenge of keeping her a part of the pop culture conversation, for all the right reasons.

The first half is the higlight with the long heady opener "cruel world" , the weeping depression of "shades of blue",the l.a cool of "west coast "&"Brooklyn baby ". The album has a refined atmosphere of trip pop and blue eyed torch songs as if you combined amy winehouse tone with julie Londons archaic torch songs. Admittedly the album doesn't end well with florida kilos being a clumsy conclusion and **** my way up to the top ","money power glory"&"black beauty " are unnecessary songs that could've been easily removed and made deluxe additions. Good record but a little derivative. It sounds like Chris Isaak's "Wicked Game" repeated over and over again. The issue of her authenticity I think is irrelevant. Either she's playing a character or not.

For some reason, I feel like this is Lana's weakest effort. Don't get me wrong, there are some really good songs on this album, but as a whole, I found myself bored and despite her "new" sound, found Ultraviolence a disappointment.

While her David Lynch qualities remain, there's also something of the masochistic Lars Von Trier heroine in the resigned drowse of these songs. [Sep 2014, p.92]
