But those features that worked perfectly on those two albums show their flaws on TLOP: at some points, the megalomania turns into excess and the schizophrenia turns into incoherence. After several changes in the tracklist and in the album's title, TLOP seems like it could have worked better without some tracks and with a more cohesive approach. TLOP sounds like a well-produced mixtape and it just add to what we already know: Kanye West is one of the greatest artists of our time. The most outstanding feature here is West's well-known acid sincerity.

Well, you could define T.L.O.P as Kanye West's grand comeback. Well if you do, i agree with you.

T.L.O.P is more an experience than an album, the almost trap-ish beats combined with the gospel and wave-heavy beats creates a mood that goes trough the whole album like red line. All in all a masterpiece.

Some really strong tracks, a lot of really inventive sampling and emotional moments. Let down by a few weak interludes but I don't think that takes away from the strength of this album.

    Could be Kanye's best yet.

I've tried to ignore Kanye's ever growing ego and enjoy the music removed from his life outside of it, but it's become increasingly hard to separate Kanye the designer and narcissist to Kanye the musician.

The album generally isn't that good. Kanye doesn't really have anything new to say, and everything he is saying we've heard 10 times already. Ok, we get it Kanye: you hate Nike.

The album generally isn't that good. Kanye doesn't really have anything new to say, and everything he is saying we've heard 10 times already. Ok, we get it Kanye: you hate Nike. Ok, we also get that you are the re-incarnation of God and everyone wants to be you or know you. We get that you have a lot of fame and money. The difference this time around, in contrast to Yeezus, is that musically this album is not very good. The two times it is good ('Ultralight Beam' and 'No More Parties in LA') it is when the song is carried by a guest singer/rapper, and when the music (sonically) actualy has some substance to it - whether it is a great sampled beat in Parties, or the gospel tinged 'Ultralight'.

I think when Kanye doesn't sound like he is complaining or sulking about something, he bares much better musically. If his narcissism keeps expanding at the rate it's going he no doubt will release a true stinker for his next album. And don't make the mistake of thinking this album is good or at the level we expect of Kanye. It's very average. I recommend Kanye either focus on his fashion brand or his music, because I believe his heart is no longer in the latter - and this album is proof of that fact.

This album is fantastic. In fact it is very fantastic but what stops it from being a classic album such as his previous work (MBDTF and Late Registration) is the lack of cohesion and consistency with the albums which might be because of his irregular thought pattern of changing everything about the album all the time. Nonetheless, it's a Kanye album. Of course it's gonna be fantastic.

But the real question is: Is this album matchable to Kanye West's standards? It can easily be seen that Kanye lacks certain goals that he didn't even have to sweat to overcome in his previous albums. Then again, does he need a point to his work? We are talking about a true phenomenon, in which people just want his music to come out.
It's still too early to even compare The Life of Pablo to the 2013 album Yeezus, and it obviously doesn't reach the level of College Dropout, Late Registration, Graduation, and MBDTF. Yet again, it's a better album then 808's and heartbreak, and just maybe better compared to Yeezus.
The production is outstanding (typical of Kanye West), and a uncommon point of this work is that the collaborations are fantastic. He really didn't need to make fabulous lyrics. He had a great team for that.
One of the only counterpoints is that it does sound unfinished. In his antecedents CDs, it can easily be seen where the album started and finished. In The Life of Pablo, Fade is definitely not a an outro. A song like Who will survive in America, Late, or Last Call is missing.
Returning back to the main question, this is not Kanye West's best work, but compared to other artists, this just maybe a masterpiece. So it reaches Kanye West's standards. A rare fact is that Kanye is in a level in the hip hop game that is considered "legend." Not even Nas, Jay Z, or even Tupac had the consistency that Kanye has in all his discography. He did it again, just accept it.

Absolutely stunning. From the moment the choir comes in on Ultralight Beams to the last note of Fade, you get Kanye firing on all cylinders. The most grueling album I've heard in a long time, and that is the best compliment I could give an album. There is so much beauty and soul to get through, it's almost overwhelming. Kanye only had one misstep: the misogynistic and perplexing Taylor Swift line.

There are a few issues. Kanye's verse on NMPILA isn't mixed that well. The version of Wolves is definitely a step down from the version we heard before. The tracks aren't really sequenced that well; you get a bit of whiplash going from beautiful melodic gospel tracks to Kanye talking about getting bleach on his d**k over trap beats.

Best moments for me were Chance's verse on Ultra Light Beams, the outro / beat switch on Famous, FML, Real Friends and 30 Hours.

I really wish Kanye had spent another weak or 2 fine-tuning this project. Nonetheless it is another stellar, original and creative project for Mr. West to add to his already impressive discography

Not as revolutionary as his previous albums, but every track on this thing works out great. It's Kanye so his lyrics are a bit off sometimes and it's clear that he spent less time polishing this one than he did with his other albums.

I think Kanye's main focus was on production and combining his earlier innovations into this one masterpiece. Musically it is intended to be incohesive since it combines different genres.Thematically upto 'waves' it is pretty tight and kanye has mentioned 30 hours as a bonus track on the track itself. So after that its just a bunch of excellent songs.
While MBTDF(again 10) was great both lyrically and sonically it had some lengthy songs on second half of the .album.

Ultralight Beam, Famous, Waves, No More Parties In L.A.. and 30 Hours are all wonderful tracks. Their production is gorgeous (and sorta messy) and the lyrics are the best on the album. Chance The Rapper spits one of his more aggressive verses on Ultralight Beam, vowing to defend God and field any questions that are asked of him. 30 Hours has Kanye reflects on his long distance relationship and it's affect on him. However great these tracks are, the album still has massive flaws. The album as a whole feels very unorganized and messy. Kanye is constantly bringing up his sex life, but in a way that feels extremely cold and gross. On the song Feedback Kanye yells about how great he is for two minutes over a boring, short looping instrumental. On the Silver Surfer Intermission is a phone call between Kayne and Max B the feels like it serves no purpose other than to fill up time. As a whole this album is very polarizing. Kanye goes back to his roots, with soul sampling, but lyrical he has only progressed farther into his lane of self-aggrandizing and egomania. It is by far his darkest album. But in the end the beauty and majesty of the best tracks are able to outshine the messiness and narcissism of the lesser tracks, if only barely. Expand

Self-consciousness you may hear often, and even more frequently self-hate, but never have I heard an album so intoxicatingly in tune not just with the sensibilities of one Kanye West, but with those sensibilities so eloquently refracted through to the insecurities, fears and ambitions of the listener.

Put another way: I've been following, listening to and admiring West for the better part of the millennium, and the extent to which The Life Of Pablo blows his previous work out of the water is nearly comical.

It's as grandiose as My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy yet as hauntingly pragmatic as 808s and Heartbreak; as soulful as The College Dropout while retaining the brutal, occasionally unwarranted honesty of Yeezus. To say The Life Of Pablo represents a culmination of West's career is to tragically undersell the stark importance of this album to West himself. It's as unfocused, erratic and ultimately transcendent as the artist unafraid to describe the album as "album of the life" in the same breath as a poorly thought-out twitter proclamation of Bill Cosby's innocence.

It's no secret that on The Life of Pablo, Kanye West and his myriad guests spanning the entire artistic vanguard of 2010s hip-hop represent a disorganized mess that, nearly miraculously, manages to coalesce into an unprecedented and magnificent feat of rap music artistry. What makes it a work of genius, though, is that it's the only album in the nuance-starved, image-obsessed world of 2016 willing to say it.

Kanye is at his most honest, revealing new truths about himself--receiving professional treatment for depression and anxiety, his early girlfriend Sumeke Rainey cheating on him, and his father leaving him and his mom. Kanye raps about himself, which some people frown upon, but I find that I am able to learn a lot about myself by listening to artists that sing/rap about themselves; it helps me to analyze my own feelings. I actually feel like one of the albums best songs is Waves - which ironically was almost not on the album - and was the reason the album was delayed. FML is another excellent piece, featuring The Weeknd - someone who i'm not usually to fond of, but here he shines. We all know that No More Parties in L.A is an excellent track having heard it on Kanye's Soundcloud almost a month ago, but it seems even better when listened to amongst the other songs in TLOP. Overall, i think it will take me several weeks, if not months, to come to a fully fleshed out opinion on this album (as is often the case with Kanye's work), but my initial reaction is that this album represents a Kanye that is standing at a crossroads, unsure of which way to go. This unsureness can be heard in the songs - but this isn't necessarily a bad thing, it gives many of the tracks a sort of edginess that we haven't heard before from Yeezy. I'm not quite sure how history will remember this album. It will be either seen as a weak point in Kanye's otherwise stellar career, or it could be seen as a marked change in direction not just for him, but for the whole Hip-Hop genre in general. This album sounds like it was made for me. I mean this album is worth every penny spent on it.
    The production is so perfect
Who likes Kanye West will surely like this

Kanye has been known for releasing incredible game-changing albums. This album is no different. I literally cannot think of a song I do not like. The features are expertly utilized, the tracks have such incredible emotion behind them, what's there not to like about this album? A common critique has been lack of cohesiveness, but I disagree. Great album overall. weak beat here and there, weak line here and there but almost every track in the album is sweet listen. although i would give up on few stupid lines like Taylor's swift line, kanye bring great bars and lyrics on most of it, and in some tracks like Real Friends and No More Parties in L.A its his best lyrics i've heard in few years.

Man oh man oh man, I could write an essay on this album. The self-realization of the protagonist's identity throughout the album, the progression of his sexual relationships from young innocent to wild then settling into maturity, the way kanye made the album play like a Greek epic while still having insane features (Kendrick Lamar's best verse of her career, Chance on Ultralight Beam,Man oh man oh man, I could write an essay on this album. The timing of this album drop too, after receiving hate for his barrier pushing sound in his previous album, showing everyone who doubted him that he still got some of the best production skills in the game. TLOP gets a 11/10 in my book, wonderful piece. Expand

Master piece. Depsite all the controversy and rants, this is how you incorporate other genres while maintaining the integrity of the product - sonically and harmonically

TLOP features some of the best production on a Kanye album since MBDTF. Musically this album is a mixture of 808s, College Dropout and MBDTF to form a beautiful abstract sonic experience that can't be quantified with a rating. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Amazing album with absolutely crazy production. Ultra Light Beam one of the most unique and best hip-hop song OAT. Album's theme is shown by the juxtaposition of artistic, beautiful moments (Pablo Picasso) and darker beats and lyrics (Pablo Escobar). Outro to Famous, Father Stretch My Hands pt. 1 + 2, FML and Real Friends are highlights Expand

There is plenty here to suggest that West's magic has not entirely left him, but as a statement of art or true intent, this is a significant misstep from an artist with so much to praise.

There is much to be admired here, rather less to be enjoyed.

For better or worse, no-one else is making records quite like this. [May 2016, p.82]
