Intimate, thoughtful and gorgeously-rendered, it’s a record that confronts love, grief and mortality with rare grace, while continuing a three-decade tradition of artistic and spiritual evolution.

Ultimately, The Ground Above elegantly shores up Beth Orton’s creative resurgence. Altogether, it represents a more mature form of comedown – one that comes with midlife epiphanies and a strong sense of resilience. [Aug 2026, p.86]

Orton’s voice is as distinct and beguiling as ever, with some newly creaky, lived-in edges that nicely complement the songs’ jazzy undertones. At times, she’s almost indecipherable—frustrating because her lyrics are worth mulling but forgivable since her voice is so expressive all on its own.
