    I will keep this simple. No, this is not BMTH's deathcore (or later, metalcore) sound. It does draw from the many years of experience that they have had playing into set genres, but this is a huge departure from any sound they have cultivated before. There were some hints in their previous album, Sempiternal, but nothing could have prepared the public for this. That's The Spirit isI will keep this simple. There were some hints in their previous album, Sempiternal, but nothing could have prepared the public for this. That's The Spirit is pop/electronica-infused, but very focused, emotional, and raw. Yet it seems to retain phenomenal production value as well. The various tracks vary from hard rock anthems with strong ties to metal, to dancepop-esque tracks meant to convey a message as much as they are meant to inspire. I know, many of you are BMTH fans and will decry their departure from the usual sound, but strictly looking at the album itself and its merits, regardless of who recorded it, That's The Spirit comes off as focused, energetic, brooding yet hopeful, very personal,and most importantly of all, phenomenal. This is the kind of album that would have been 2005's Album of the Year. Today, some may say it sounds somewhat dated, but I feel as if it is just what we need: a rock band willing to make an album on their terms to their standards.     This is a very good album. Bring Me the Horizon changed their sound too much, that is true. But I feel they did it right. The vocals are great, melodies are catchy, the electronic stuff sounds cool... Either way, That's the Spirit has many ups. However, I must say, that some of the songs sound... they're just too pop, too commercial and radio-friendly, too dance music. And I'm OK with mostThis is a very good album. Bring Me the Horizon changed their sound too much, that is true. But I feel they did it right. The vocals are great, melodies are catchy, the electronic stuff sounds cool...     I'm a fan of Bring Me The Horizon since "There Is a Hell" and even after they changed their style, they still do a good job. It's not deathcore or metalcore. They changed for good. The lyrics are great, the production (made by themselves) is good and even now that his voice is not in a good moment, Oliver does a nice job. All of the songs could be single.     I didn't jump on the BMTH train until "Sempiternal". I absolutely loved that CD and "That's the Spirit" follows it up nicely. Kind of similar to In This Moment's "Blood" and "Black Widow". They were both going in a slightly new direction and they seem dedicated to follow through now that the money is flowing.

    For sure BMTH changed their style, most of the people consider that they changed to the worst, for me to the best, anyway That's the Spirit is a truly a masterpiece.

    Very different than TIAH and Sempiternal... And not for the better. BMTH never stood out in the deathcore scene too much but once they altered their sound in TIAH, they took the world by surprise and actually garnered international acclaim, and they deserved it. Seeing the direction they were headed, I was excited for their next release.. Well it's finally here and how do I feel? Well IVery different than TIAH and Sempiternal... And not for the better. BMTH never stood out in the deathcore scene too much but once they altered their sound in TIAH, they took the world by surprise and actually garnered international acclaim, and they deserved it. Seeing the direction they were headed, I was excited for their next release.. Well it's finally here and how do I feel? Well I feel somewhat disappointed.

    The album begins with "Doomed," a wonderful song that seems to come straight from Sempiternal.. After that, tracks 2-6 are a total bore. Just generic metal core. Track 5, "Follow You," is different than the rest of that group, and it's actually nice, but it's a bit repetitive.

    Now once you get to track 7, track 7 through the end is great and very reminiscent of some Sempiternal songs: atmospheric, fast, and catchy. "Oh No," the closer, was actually surprising with the nice jazz-ish solo toward the end but sadly this experimentation is not seen a lot in the album. It felt flat, too polished, and too safe, in a nutshell.

    I recommend: "Doomed," "Avalache," and "Oh No"

    I feel it's a 6/10. Could've been higher if they left out the first half (save for the first song). I felt it bloated most of the record.    … Expand

    Bring Me The Horizon was one of those bands where I wasn't really into it before a certain album. However, after they changed their style I started to enjoy it. I can safely say that I enjoy every song on this album except for Follow You. It is also did take me a bit of time to enjoy Oh No but I soon learned to like it. If you do not have the money to buy all the tracks, I would recommendBring Me The Horizon was one of those bands where I wasn't really into it before a certain album. However, after they changed their style I started to enjoy it. I can safely say that I enjoy every song on this album except for Follow You. It is also did take me a bit of time to enjoy Oh No but I soon learned to like it. If you do not have the money to buy all the tracks, I would recommend True Friends, Happy Song, What You Need, Drown, and Blasphemy. Other than that, see you all later.… Expand

    It's so strange to hear Oli on my car radio. It's a much more mellow and overall less metal album than their previous album, Sand Pit Turtle. However, songs like Drown, Throne and Avalanche shine as the greatest songs in the album as they feature a toned down, but still amazing guitar riffs and Oli's signature gruffy voice. It's a pretty good album, but for Bring me the Horizon to createIt's so strange to hear Oli on my car radio.     The first thing that hit me when I listened to the record is that Oli can sing. It's not even just ok it's GOOD. That's the main reason why for me this record is so much more enjoyable than 'Sempiternal'. I mean that was good but his voice got so tiring on it. On 'That's the Spirit' the band sound the most distant they've ever been from their deathcore roots with arena rock ready bangers, pop melodies and electronic instrumentation weaved throughout the tracks (I guess that's where the Radiohead influence comes in.) The melodies are quite catchy despite often containing very little lyrics. While some songs are repetitive and annoyingly simple for their length they have an undeniable likability to them that many pop/rock bands fail to capture. At the moment I really like this album and I can only see it growing on me in the future.

The Alt-Indie rock fits perfectly with Oli sykes' raspy upper register and soothing lows. The electronic production gives new dimensions to a band who one wouldn't believe would make a song, with an intro nodding straight to house.     Great album, maybe better than Sempiternal. Bring me the Horizon really shows that they can change up their sound and are not afraid of surprising their fanbase. This time at least, it proved to be a great decision as this album is very catchy and no song sound like another. Cool.

However, while this latest effort by Bring Me the Horizon might seem like a huge stab in the back to their diehard fans, their radical change of sound since 2008's "Suicide Season" is in reality, not that surprising. Each of the group's last twoThere's a lot of words that can describe "That's the Spirit", the British group's fifth effort - risky, ambitious and polarizing, to name a few. However, while this latest effort by Bring Me the Horizon might seem like a huge stab in the back to their diehard fans, their radical change of sound since 2008's "Suicide Season" is in reality, not that surprising. Each of the group's last two efforts - 2010's "There Is a Hell, Believe Me I've Seen It, There Is a Heaven, Let's Keep It a Secret" and 2013's "Sempiternal" were critically-acclaimed for the changes that the band made to their early metalcore sound. On this album however, the group abandons their metalcore sound entirely and adopt an electronic-influenced alternative-rock sound.

    At around forty-five minutes, the album feel pretty tight and concise, especially since no track goes above five minutes in length, and none of the songs here feel like they drag out for too long. The arrival of keyboardist Jordan Fish into the group in 2012 benefitted greatly to the sound of "Sempiternal" and his presence on this album just simply cannot be ignored. For one, Fish and vocalist Oliver Sykes acted as the album's producers, and secondly, every song on this record has electronic instrumentation, the level of which varies with each track.

    Oliver Sykes vocal style is another major talking point from this record, as he predominantly sings as opposed employing the screaming vocal style that dominated the band's early records, and for the most part, he delivers his vocals with a good deal of passion and conviction on topics such as depression, disloyalty and loneliness. One track, "What You Need" deals with self-harming and suicide in the typical metalcore-type manner but with a less aggressive, electronic pop-rock vibe.

    At various points on this album, its sound could draw great comparisons to Linkin Park's more electronically-influenced work, particularly on "True Friends" "Throne" and "Avalanche". "Happy Song" is probably the only throwback (if only faintly) to their earlier sound, but is delivered with more of a punk rock feel. The intro to "Follow You" throws a small nod to house music, while the album closer "Oh No" is pure dance-rock. A re-recorded version of the single "Drown" appears on the album (a song that cracked the top twenty on the UK Singles Chart last December) and nods towards arena-rock, another common feature of many of the album's tracks, and is catchy, if not a little infectious.

    The production on the record is overall, very good and a lot of these songs sound just as atmospheric as some of the album highlights on "Sempiternal", such as "Can You Feel My Heart", but songs like "Run" and "Follow You" seem to be slightly overproduced and a little too generic and as a result, effect the overall cohesiveness of the album. However, the production on "Happy Song", "Throne" and "True Friends" works so brilliantly with these particular instrumentals that any shortcomings regarding production can be easily overlooked.

    Overall, this latest album sees Bring Me the Horizon directly challenging their fan base, for which the group must be commended. It is without question their most mainstream sounding album to date and their ambitious take on electronic-influenced rock must also be commended. The album's not a straight out masterpiece and is not without several flawed tracks, but as albums come, this will probably stand with the best of them come the end of the year.

But unlike the folks giving this negative reviews, I can also handle other types of music. If you're looking for BMTH to sound like they used to, you won't like this. This isn't Metalcore its more "Screamo-Pop" and its fantastic. Taken on its own terms, within their new genre, BMTH have not only produced an excellent record, they are moving Screamo in new directions by bringing it into the mainstream, but without doing the usual Emo-Pop stuff that's been done to for years. See, there's a slight undercurrent throughout all this music where BMTH's heavy roots are breathing just under the surface. In fact, there's some screamo harmonies that are both a little deathcore heavy AND radio-ready beautiful at the same time.     Let me start by saying I'm a big fan of metal/metalcore. I've seen many bands, such as Bullet for my Valentine, lose their edge with their changing sound, but this is one of the few cases where a band's style changing is only beneficial. Every song on the album has the power of a single, they are each unique, and have their own story to tell. This is the album I never knew I wanted.

    Bring Me the Horizon steps out into this new territory with both confidence, and most importantly, talent. You'd think they've been doing stuff like this for years. They slip into these new styles with ease, while maintaining the lyrics and emotions that made their later albums (There Is a Hell... and Sempiternal) so fantastic.

    It's sad to see another metal band go soft, and I definitely want this band to go back to their roots with their next album. Yet, despite that it's hard for me to find complaints with music this well made. I once said this band has the potential to become one of the elite in any genre they should choose to explore. This album proves that. It's fantastic and one I will be returning to time and time again. It's not the type of music I want or expect from the band, but with quality like this I'm more than okay with the results. So long as they return to heavier material in the future I have no problem with this change in style. They nail another genre of music.

But 2010's There Is a Hell was an overall excellent effort at expanding their formerly generic post-hardcore sound into experimental territory and genuine horizons. Then came 2013'sBring Me the Horizon are actually one of the most listenable bands from that mid-'00s born, Hot Topic clothed 'screamo' era that many of us tried on like a trendy fashion statement then quickly grew out of. But 2010's There Is a Hell was an overall excellent effort at expanding their formerly generic post-hardcore sound into experimental territory and genuine horizons. Then came 2013's Sempiternal, which incorporated influences of prog-rock, electronica and even introduced frontman Oliver Skye's clean vocals that were withered yet warm, a welcoming addition to their ever-expanding sound. Despite the album's explicit anti-religious themes, it felt as if they were pushing more toward a more straightforward sound throughout.

    But experimentalism didn't quite make it into their 2014 single "Drown", a mostly mainstream radio-friendly rock single that's about as faceless as it is faded of the band's post-hardcore roots. And That's the Spirit follows along by turning Bring Me the Horizon into the '10's recreation of '00s-era pop-punk, pop rock and even cringeworthy nü-metal moments only the most nostalgic music listener could love. It's an equally devastating and disappointing blow to the fans that wanted Skyes and co. to enter an experimental version of their core sound, not a complete deconstruction in a desperate attempt to earn the band another charting single. The opening "Doomed" does a decent attempt at incorporating electronics into their newfound mainstream rock sound, but it eventually descends as soon as the rest of the tracks play on, never separating themselves from each other until the trance-y breakdown hits on the closing "Oh No".

    It's certainly not a complete disaster more than it is a weak attempt at writing catchy, commercial rock songs that never end up sounding different from everything else we've already heard since the 21st century first began. It's especially concerning for a band capable of doing so much more than become a stereotype of the bands that have fell in their shadow for years.

    For my first BMTH album, I picked a damn good one. I normally don't like metal, but this is such a good blend of smooth beats and hard lyrics that it's almost a perfect album. A great candidate for album of the year, and a great intro to the rest of BMTH's work.

    really enjoyed this project. its nice to see them switching things up for once. must have for BMTH fans and i recommend anyone into alternative, electronic rock to check this album out.

    Bring Me The Horizon has been well-known for surprising listeners and experimenting with new sounds. They have matured and are making Linkin Park step aside to allow That's The Spirit climb the charts. Oli Sykes brings emotion to lyrics, especially in this album.

    Not a great Album, turned into a much softer pop band with no uniqueness. You can find softer music like this almost anywhere but not music like they have made before. Save your money.

    Went from hardcore to very soft music. Like Linkin Park did and Linkin Park did not make it better. So it is going the same way with Bring Me The Horizon latest album. Sounds as soft as Linkin Park. I was happy with Linkin Parks first few albums. Not Bring Me The Horizon went off to softcore. How is adding kids singing to the f-word great. This is a bad album. Music is getting as bad asWent from hardcore to very soft music. Like Linkin Park did and Linkin Park did not make it better. So it is going the same way with Bring Me The Horizon latest album. Sounds as soft as Linkin Park. I was happy with Linkin Parks first few albums. Not Bring Me The Horizon went off to softcore. How is adding kids singing to the f-word great. This is a bad album. Music is getting as bad as the horror genre on movies. They take rated R and start making PG-13 horror and now we got hardcore going to softcore. What do they think its going to make the world better with the kids? It is too late for this clean up now. They are all bad and doing this isn't going to stop the end of the world. Not only that, but the lyrics are immature and cringe-worthy, the vocals are awful, and the instrumentation is boring.     Love their new alternative and indie pop direction , it's a delight to the ear , especially the ethereal oh no and follow you .This album is more alternative than nu metal , but there are few post hardcore songs like happy song , true friends and what you need .Avalanche reminds me of linkin park , this song is pure genius though .     Energetic, passionate and fueled with some big choruses, "That's the Spirit" hits you like a thunder with it's aggressive attitude, it's relatable lyrics and powerful rhythms.

    Let's review this record.
    1) Doomed - I was really disappointed in this song I think that this song is not suitable for the opening of this album.6 from 10.
    2) Happy Song - S-P-I-R-I-T, Lets hear it.One of the best songs on this album! 10 from 10.
    3) Throne - I like this song very much, like emotional chorus. 10 from 10.
    4) True Friends - Mainstream song. 7 from 10.
    5) Follow you - Very simple song. 5 from 10.
    6) What You Need - I like this song very much.They use new sound. 8 from 10.
    7) Avalanche - Perfect song like old times. 9 from 10.

    Awful. Just Awful. This change in sound is terrible. It's muted and with electronic flourishes that do nothing for the sound. The guitars are almost completely lost and there is just no drive there anymore. They are no longer a metal band this is flat, boring, electro pop rock.

This album though, their fifth outing to date is an utter disgrace and well below the high standard set by their previous efforts. It is a one-trick pony and that trick didn't impress me in the first place. Every track will make old school BMTH fans want to weep with    R.I.P. BMTH

    It is a one-trick pony and that trick didn't impress me in the first place. Every track will make old school BMTH fans want to weep with sorrow at how a band that was once so unashamedly brutal could produce and entire album of meaningless, soul-less and consequently pointless music the likes of which offends me enough to make listening to each track on the album a chore which couldn't end soon enough.

    evolve/mature etc...clearly not the case here. The lyrics still sound like they were written by a misunderstood teenage boy dealing with his first heartbreak.
    Their newest album sounds like a mix between NickelbackLinkin Park so if that's your thing you'd enjoy this album. If I had to choose their    I wasn't a big fan before but thought I'd give it a listen seeing that artists/bands
