I LOVE Lorde’s past catalogue. Her previous two are two of my favorite albums, but this one falls flat. There was so much more that could have been done while staying true to the theme. Most songs sound very similar (acoustic guitar) with nothing to pull me back to want to listen again. There are two deluxe tracks, and I believe the album could have benefited from the variation those tracks have in production. After four years between albums, I was greatly disappointed. Expand

Poorly constructed project, album too shallow and lacking cohesion, too weak commercially, totally forgettable.

Urge cancelación para Jack Antonoff. Es triste que una gran compositora esté atenida a una persona producción.

Very boring, generic album. People saying this is a "Lyrical masterpiece" haven't read any novels at all. Yes comparing novels to lyrics can be a bit silly, but until you've read great songwriters like Davey Havok, Neil Peart, etc. you won't understand. It's a pretty boring album, the same sounds, it looks like I was listening to a 40-minute song, I don't recommend listening to it

Her best lyrics but her worst music. Everything sounds the same and is boring. Mood Ring is the star of the show.

Not even as close as Melodrama. I’m so sorry but my expectations were higher. Flop.

Terrible album. We wanted music and not long, boring narrations. Folklore and evermore are 1000 times better than this album whose no song is up to the mark. I can barely reach the end of a song without feeling bored. Thanks for wasting my time.

most songs here have no memorable melodies, choruses or bridges, the lyrics are shallow and giving off major annoying rich white girl who talks to plants and just learned about shakras and yoga. very disappointing.

Better than I expect. Plenty of mainstream pop stars have decided they no longer want to be mainstream pop stars. They’ve tried everything to achieve their goal, from making deliberately unlistenable albums, to – in the memorable case of the late Scott Walker – locking themselves in a monastery on the Isle of Wight.

But few have attempted to bid farewell to mainstream pop stardom as prettily as Lorde does on her third album. It opens with a guitar picking a gentle, woozy-sounding figure. A flute glides beatifically by and Lorde offers a grim depiction of life as a teenager superstar – complete with “nightmares from the camera flash” – before apparently saying goodbye to all that: “alone on a windswept island”, she “won’t take the call if it’s the label or radio”. “If you’re looking for a saviour,” she adds, “that’s not me”, which would sound a little self-aggrandising had the world of online fandom not become so overheated that whenever a female pop star posts anything on social media, the responses are clogged up by stans calling them “mum”, “queen” and “goddess”.

It's almost like Lorde didn't even want to make an album. Extremely disappointing, it's not even debatable I don't feel that this is in every way inferior to her previous 2 masterpieces.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Expand

After Lorde's amazing, groundbreaking Melodrama, Solar Power seems weak in comparison, with the same, airy and boring theme running through. The lyricism is also subpar. The ideas that are trying to be presented are either not being done well or just weak. I don't know what happened to Lorde but this is definitely a great disappointment.

After a work of art like Melodrama, we expected a lot. Unfortunately, we didn't get what we expected.

I hope that in the future, Lorde can show us her talent again, because on this album, she showed that maybe, she is no longer capable of making works of art.

I was very disappointed in this album. I expected something better. Dont start with the “she’s happier now” or “you said that with melodrama”, thats not what I mean by better. I meant better. The album seems anticlimactic, all the songs have the same boring energy. Only good song is mood ring.

All these connections Lorde is trying to make: her strange pastiche imagination of the ’70s, that random spoken word interlude by Robyn about climate change, and the themes of “sun healing,” never fully reach each other. Often, they come off as disingenuous and out of touch more than they read as brilliant, or comical. Whether the album is one big prank, or just one majorly failed experiment, the gist of having the “privilege to ignore” is lost in translation. All you are left with is just a handful of pretty alright songs.

If you're riding and vibing with Lorde, this bright shapelessness is superb mood music. If you're not riding her wave, Solar Power can seem elusive, even cloying, as it circles and sways with a smile.

This might not be the album that everyone wanted from Lorde, but it’s a solid, dreamy effort that deserves exploration. There’s plenty here worthy of attention if you can focus for long enough.
