    Both rocking and reflective, Small Town Dreams is chock full of the kind of ready-for-prime-time anthems that effectively assert both his acumen and authority.

    The songs are still great, the live shows will still be raucous, and as evidenced by fiery album closer, "Til I Do It Again," Hoge's still got plenty of rebel left in him anyway.

    Small Town Dreams is at least as strong as 2013's fine Never Give In and more sharply focused. His gifts as a lyricist and melodist are prodigious, and his confidence and ambition find equilibrium here.
