The sound of Rockwell! is a refreshing one: a more laid-back, summery vibe that is paired with haunting vocals. Likewise, the experimentation of different genres while connecting to her unique sound, Lana Del Rey has developed a sonically brilliant, hybrid sound in Rockwell! -- an album as cohesive as 'Honeymoon' is matched with the sound of the 'surfer Born to Die' and the 'softer Ultraviolence' which seamlessly transition and blend into one another: from the start that is hopeful rather than withering, the jams which are nostalgic and emotional rather than draining, to the moments in her ballads to which some may feel flat and blunt but are generally sincere at the same time cinematic -- there is no time travel through weak attempts at corny references and fantasies, but only a raw, intimate look into her real world -- 'Rockwell!' is concluded with a truthful flash of the life she once had -- to choose between the past she was once stuck and is still dwelling in, or to move forward with hope and strength to command her own boat. It's a remarkably sharp pop record that retains her fascination with pop-culture iconography and the rosey simplicity of a post-war America where classic rock and blue jeans ruled and takes them to much deeper places. ... Think of it as an hour-long car ride peeling down the highway with classic rock blaring out of the radio and no real destination in mind other than where your impulsive nature might take you.

A thematically rich record, heavy on mood and elegantly written in a way that positions Del Rey between Eve Babitz and Carole King. There are beguiling and evolving melodies underneath the spare piano and acoustic arrangements. [Nov 2019, p.24]
