The first listen can feel overwhelming, as though you’ve stumbled, wide-eyed, into the yawning, spooky sonic wilderness with no map—unsure what to listen for or if it’s not very chill to ask yourself that question to begin with. But with time, the record reveals itself, its once-daunting terrain becoming familiar, navigable, and even irresistible.

Whether it's the Damon Albarn-embellished Afro-pop of Pure Love or Buschtaxi's wonky take on reggaeton, delightful weirdness seeps from every pore. [May 2025, p.91]

Music Can Hear Us lays out DJ Koze’s panculturalist ethos clearer than any of his prior studio releases, island-hopping from wispy echoes of son Cubano (“A Dónde Vas?”) to Japanese-language doo-wop (“Umaoi”) to, uh, Damon Albarn-fronted Afrobeats? .... To show the next generation how it’s done, DJ Koze throws two absolute heaters into the back half of Music Can Hear Us.
