Zayn has a clear power in his voice which is shown in Pillowtalk and Fool for you, but shows artful restraint and allows the excellent production to shine through where necessary. Brilliant album. Zayn showcases his raw talent and emotion and makes you feel what he is going through. It's real it's raw and it's relatable. He sings of realizing hurtful and toxic situations and people in his life and takes you on that journey with him. It's extremely poetic and some of the plays on words are incredible and really just add to the album. Amazing album

It's really a good and refreshing Pop/Alternative R&B album which really represents him and the music that he wants to do. Zayn delivers vocals and emotions, he really poured himself out in this album and tried to let us in to let us know him more and in my honest and humble opinion he did that. The production was excellent from the intro to the last song and I was really surprised when I realized I didn't actually feel the need to skip a song, not even one. Also I really wanna give him more credits for the lyrics because they're actually really good and I feel like people don't realize it enough. Sabes ese sentimiento de esperanza luego de malos tiempos? Eso es lo que sentí cuando escuché este álbum. Tiene cierta tristeza y aún así tiene canciones llena de añoranza por un futuro cercano. This is a solid debut album. Each songs telling a story, and the transition between songs is so smooth.
Zayn has incredible vocals, the way he sang the words is beautiful, very Zayn, very different.
He is also becoming a prominent wordsmith. A lot of his lyrics have deep meanings, they sound like poetry. Each times i heard the album, i learn something new that i might miss before.

Another thing that i like about this album, it has influenced of Zayn's Pakistani culture, it's shown by the way he sang most of the songs. He also sang a song in Urdu, 'Intermission: Flower'
There's also classical influenced in 'Blue', and heartbreaking ballads like 'It's You' and 'Fool For You'.
If i need something upbeat, something mellow, something uplifting, something to think about, i'm always coming back to this album.

It's a standout and shows that Zayn isn't afraid to be different and go against the norm. This album is definitely worth checking out. It should also be noted that Zayns debut single PillowTalk debuted at #1 on both the US and UK charts. A feat that only 11 other artist before him have done, such as Michael Jackson, The Beatles, Beyoncé, Adele and Ed Sheeran. Zayn is also the FIRST male UK solo artist to debut at #1 with their first album. Zayn has since seen another top 5 hit with his duet of I Don't Want ago Live Forever with Taylor Swift. And I was at first very skeptical because he was in the former One Direction band, whose music I found to be very dull and slightly childish.

After having listened to It's You and Lucozade, I saw a lot of depth in his voice. The tone of his voice struck me and gave me goosebumps all over. It was like immaculate conception. The high notes in the music were surprisingly beautiful and mysterious - being a huge rock fan - it reminded me of something only a Freddie Mercury could achieve. I didn't expect this from a former 1D member. I really didn't.

The iconic Pillowtalk of course is what stood out to me. The style was very unique and it was a splendid job by the artist. Like I Would had me immediately 'bopping' my head as some youngsters like to say these days.

Overall, I have been left speechless by how good this album is. And want to know if Zayn will be releasing more music in the near future. If so, I very much look forward to it and hope to see an evolution because he has enormous potential.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. When I first heard pillowtalk I loved it. But at that point I didn't know who Zayn was. So like I do with any top 10 song, I listened to it and moved on. However one day while I was going through some instagram posts I came across a snippet of Zayn's song "Golden". The meaning of the lyrics and his voice was so beautiful that it convinced me to give his album a try. The album was truly a masterpiece. My favorites are "pillowtalk, golden, befour, she, drunk, rear view, tio" and the only feature on the album "wrong". Songs like "fool for you, borderz, blue, truth, lucozade and she don't love me" are works of art on their own right. "Like I would" is a bop while "bright" was an unexpected surprise of the good kind. The ballad "It's you" is so beautiful and to this day I don't know how it's possible for a man to hit the notes in that song. Even after I've seen him do it live. The song "flower" which he sang in order to honor his heritage was truly a novel experience. Specially to see something of asian culture being created by a man who grew up in the western culture. And last but not least the intro "mind of mindd". Lots of people don't pay attention to it since it's a simple verse. But there's a power in it that I can't put into words. All in all "Mind of Mine" was one amazing debut album that truly showcased Zayn's vocal ability and diversity in music. Expand

Befour was the song that pulled me in and none of the rest disappointed in any way. Some of them took a while to stick, like Blue and Lucozade, but the one take no-repeated chorus style gets in your head and you can feel the frustration the singer's trying to articulate through music. Rear View switches the mood to a sad but not hopeless self examination. TiO and Wrong are sexy but not trying to notch up numbers at the expense of their partner, the participants are enthusiastic and enjoying their sexy, uncensored indiscretions together. His vocals are really nice to listen to and one year later, I am still listening to his whole album on a regular basis. I was not a fan of One Direction, quite the opposite, but even then I was fascinated by Zayn. I really liked his "Let me love you" by Mario cover, his vocals were really nice even back then. After he left I kept my eyes on him because I wanted to see what kind of music he would release. Well the wait got paid off real good, and he even improved alot to the better. I am very happy that my image of him indeed has proven to be true. He can definitely count on me when he tours or releases a new album, i am all on his side. I took my time to write this review because I saw a few people saying the album is all about sex, whereas 7 out of 18 tracks at most may include sex in a relationship, which is again real may I add. Mind of Mine is melancholic in many places, but also hopeful at times. The album has many layers and the more I listen, then more I feel like I discover bits and pieces of who Zayn is. It truly deserves multiple plays before you decide if you like it or not because it's such a long, multifaceted album. It feels like one is taking a journey with Zayn as you listen to it from start to finish. And the production is great. Malay Ho is truly one of the greats.

Zayn's voice is angelic on tracks like It's You and Intermission: Flower. The urdu on Flower is particularly haunting and beautiful. Stand out tracks for me are Befour (probably one of my top 10 favorite songs of all time), Drunk (a summer anthem if I've ever heard one), Rear View (a tragically honest song about going through hard times and trying not to look back), and Lucozade (a crazy spit fire track that was recorded in one take).

If you like darker Pop/R&B you will definitely enjoy this album. Even if that's not your type of music, everyone can appreciate Zayn's vocal ability. His falsettos in particularly truly shine throughout the album. Definitely one of the top male vocalists around right now.

The fact that Zayn didn't shy away from his heritage and sang a song ("flower") in his father's language in such a politically charged environment speaks volumes. It's not what you expect. He's not Justin Timberlake or someone like that, he's Zayn and it' more interesting this way. It's a breath of fresh air between his contemporanies, you got sexy tunes like Pillowtalk and Wrong and yet very personal songs in Befour (remembering his days as boybander) and frankly i'm still singing the chorus of the last one because it's THAT good. Intensely soulful and whatever your preconceptions of him this album present a lot of promise in hands of someone who has not only a versatil voice but a fine ear for pop music. This album is a 10/10 for me. Knowing his story, this album is so emotional and personal to him but you can still relate to it. Knowing his story, this album is so emotional and personal to him but you can still relate to it. Usually you immediately have a favourite song off an album and there's one or two (or maybe even more songs) that you don't like but that's not the case here. It's been more than a year since its release and I have yet to choose one favourite song. It changes with every listen and I love all the songs. There also is not a single songs that I dislike. There are a few songs that I listen to a bit more (depending on my mood) but I like all the songs.
I love how the album is like a journey. With the intro MiNd Of MiNdd Zayn invites us to enter his "mind" and see what he thinks and feels.
Musically, this album is a masterpiece. Zayn combined different genres but it all fits together. The transition between the songs are flawless and nothing feels out of place, it all blends together very well. Nothing generic about it either, nothing sounds like anything ever before. It's new, it's different, it's Zayn!
Vocally Zayn always delivers! There are incredible high notes, he's used his lower register and there are some hints of rapping. He sings with so much soul and emotion, you can basically feel it while listening to his voice. He's an incredible vocalist, no need to say more.
The album also presents amazing lyrics. While not all songs are lyrically challenging, there are some that are incredibly hard. The song lUcOzAdE is a lyrical masterpiece. No repetitions, just venting in a 4 minutes long song (and to think that he recorded it in one take is mind blowing) full of metaphors and emotions.
Zayn, a brown muslim man, also included a short intermission (INTERMISSION: fLoWeR) sang in urdu and doing that in a world that's so strongly against brown people and islamophobic, it shows of incredible bravery and strength. He also played the guitar himself in that song.
All together, it definitely is my favourite album of 2016. I still play it everyday and I still discover new little things about it with every listen. You can listen to it a million times but it doesn't get boring. Zayn did THAT!

Versatility is the key to this album, you can hear the different genres in which Zayn was inspired without actually copying them. It is rather a tribute, with a stamp of his own. Top Tracks: Befour, Pillowtalk, She Do not Love Me.

I strongly recommend listening to this album alone, it is the best context to enjoy the details that make it a debut delight. The premeditated connection between one song and the next is lost if you skip songs. Zayn's music undoubtedly holds great promise, i appreciate specially the airy "Flower: INTERMISSION".

The best R&B album released in 2016 so far.

His vocal skills help pave over the (rare) moments when the lyrics seem a bit juvenile or the sound feels a little too familiar, and help make Mind of Mine an impressive debut. It's music he couldn't have made with One Direction and while it may not be breaking any new ground, it's new for him and he's talented enough to make that interesting for anyone who likes well-made pop music.

Mind of Mine leaps right over anything on Justified and carves a path of its own. Next decade’s boybands will doubtless provoke discussion on which of them will break out like this, which one will be a Zayn.

Throughout this album, Mr. Malik opts for a low-octane approach, with varying success.
