Overall, though, there are really no skips on this album, and it’s one of my favorite albums released in recent years.

Manic is the third studio album by American singer Halsey. It was released on January 17, 2020 through Capitol Records.[1] It was preceded by the release of three singles: “Without Me”, “Graveyard”, and “You Should Be Sad” and features guest appearances by Dominic Fike, Alanis Morissette, and Suga of BTS. The album was commercially successful, debuting at number two on the Billboard 200, becoming her third top-two album on the chart and her biggest album debut to date, selling 239,000 total units in its first week of released and currently holds 2,500,000 sales worldwide.[2]

The bravery of how Confessional this album is leaves me appalled. Not many artists would dare write such a beautiful song about miscarriages and struggles of pregnancy, family issues and bipolar, femininity and sexuality this way.

It is simply and without a doubt her best album up to date. She is at her most confessional state in this album and it really helps us identify with her, given that we are all people and that she talks about love and loss, feelings and choices to which we can all relate. I hope she continues thriving and evolving, giving us more artistic songs, exactly like the ones of this magnificent album.

The only songs that work on their own are "Without Me", "3am" and "You should be sad". But that’s not a bad thing at all because a cohesive, creative, interesting body of work is so rare these days because all the artists fill their albums with possible radio hits with the same trap beat. The lyrics on this album are also beautiful and deeply personal. Halsey sings about loneliness, bisexuality, (her) mental health, toxic relationships and craving love. Even the interludes are good and interesting and flow really well. It’s also a very experimental album as it experiments with country and rock music. Definitely Halsey‘s best album and one of the best of 2020 so far.

Halsey's third studio album finds her leaving behind the idea of adapting a persona as the subject for the record (a thing that was the center of her first two records) and instead finds her singing from her own perspective (notice the little "H3, A01" on the cover?).

Halsey's third studio album finds her leaving behind the idea of adapting a persona as the subject for the record (a thing that was the center of her first two records) and instead finds her singing from her own perspective (notice the little "H3, A01" on the cover?).

"Manic" is the right name for it: it is filled with so many different sounds and moods, even on the course of one song sometimes . On 'Forever... (is a long time)', Ashley starts singing in a heartfelt way, for it to build to this low dramatic piano interlude, for it to then explode into screams and shouts. The track is the first of the holy trilogy, with 'Dominic's Interlude' and 'I HATE EVERYBODY', all of which almost sound like one long song à la 'Bohemian Rhapsody'. Going through the record, one can hear country (the perfectly written 'beautiful stranger / finally', the outraged 'You should be sad'), rock ('3AM'), alternative (the vocally stunning 'More', and '929' which is practically a poem Halsey has decided to just sing), and K-Pop ('Suga's Interlude'). It all sounds so chaotic, yet so cohesive in some way.

Halsey employs her smartest lyrics ('then I stop cause I don't wanna Uma Thurman your ass' on highlight 'killing boys' might just be the best lyric on the record), and suitable movie references (Clementine from "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" on mesmerizing opener 'Ashley', and from "Jennifer's Body" on 'killing boys').

The only song that is somehow weak (and still not enough to not make the record), is 'Still Learning', which is an attempt at vulnerability and being confessional, which turns out to be an EDM-based generic miss.

A leap from its predecessor (the complete mess that was "hopeless fountain kingdom"), "Manic" truly lives up to its title and is truly just THAT, in its sounds, in its aesthetic, in its roll-out.

Opening your feelings to someone is hard as hell. Now, imagine expressing yourself and explain your emotions and thoughts for an audience of millions of people, which are able to judge and criticize. It is a very smart and mature move for anyone. Thus, Halsey has decided to open her heart to anyone who'll listen; millions of people in her case.
Halsey has made a very enjoyable and relatable album full of deep personal lyrics that can reach out to anyone. Everyone could empathize with the singer and this album; you only have to have the willingness to listen to the chaotic emotional roller-coaster that is Halsey's life. Billie Eilish once said during her teenage years that "everyone I know in the music industry is fuc*ing sad". Thus, Ashley focuses on her most personal life, on bad loving, ex-lovers and how hard it is to deal with fame and loneliness. The singer has been able to write a 16 track album that resumes how she has felt emotionally during the three years, since the release of her previous album. She has been able to talk as Ashley, the most honest version of herself, the true one. I can hear Halsey singing thoughout the album and Ashley screaming in the background, hoping to be heard by the pop star. Manic definitely is a chaotic amalgamation of self-analysis, rage, depression, ecstasy, and growth that sees its creator managing the messiness of fame while trying to stay true to herself.
The message is amazing and so is the music that accompanies it. A perfect mix of traditional pop assorted with the newest trends in the industry: low electronic R&B filled with an acoustic guitar and a little bit of notorious autotune.
In conclusion, combining heartbreak with a journey to self-love, the album feels like entering the mind of a bipolar person: chaotic and relaxed at the same time. It is an album to cry of sadness and of joy. Manic will for sure be remembered as one of the best and most interesting albums to be released in recent memory by a female pop act.

The album is very cohesive, lyrics and sonically wise. It's great to follow the storyline from the first to the last track.

While it lacks the bangers that her two previous albums had it is a beautiful peace of work. It’s nice to meet you Ashley.

"Manic" is Halsey's best and most cohesive album to date. The album is such a personal look into who Halsey is as a person and an artist. These tracks are all so different but they work so well together. The sound of this album is very generic pop, but not in a bad way. Halsey takes these powerful lyrics and makes this album her own. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Manic marks for her a new apogee in terms of versatility and authenticity.

A journey through Halsey's personal point of views and life experiences. The choice of not including Nightmare makes even more sense now as Manic is already oversaturated by the abundance of different genres waving through the album, approximately separated by the interludes in three main solid units. The singer's primary strength is found in her songwriting skills, in Manic they leave the more philosophical inquisitions of her past discography in favor of an extemporaneous, still sophisticated expression that puts the listener in a chair right in front of her genuine storytelling. With the exception of a couple of fillers, the songs themselves evince a neat identity while oozing pop fragrances absorbing as much as possible from out-of-pop sounds in order to follow and enhance whatever emotion is brought to the table.

Highlights: You Should Be Sad, Forever... is a Long Time, Finally // Beautiful Strangers

    Partial scores:
    A.S.S. (average songs score) = 8.0/10
    Overall composition = 7.8/10
    Overall production = 8.3/10
    Overall songwriting = 9.2/10
    Creativity = 8.2/10
    Cohesivity = 7.5/10

The final score is obtained using the following formula:
    (ASS x 2 + composition x 2 + production x 2 + songwriting x 2 + creativity x 1 + cohesivity x 1)/100 =

    82.3/100

Manic's final score falls within the category very good albums.

Halsey in an album. Making what she does best but some songs seems forgetabble.

Halsey brought a process of great evolution in this album, both in sound/production and composition. The only one of their problem is their repetitive songs, which could pass them without wanting to notice the difference between one and the other. Many interludes, and tiresome songs even though they are with good productions and grand iosie compositions. Certainly, your previous album is better.

O álbum da carreira só por ter you should be sad e 3AM. Finally/beatiful stranger entrou pro top 5 músicas que arrancam suspiros (e talvez lágrimas) de mim. Coeso.

Diria que não foi 10 por ter um dos 7 filhos da flordelis no meio do álbum... fui rancoroso!

Manic is an album that stays true to its title: it is manic. Albums cannot be built on emotion alone, and that is why Halsey uses her vocal talent, songwriting talent, and superior production on this project. Easily better than hopeless fountain kingdom.

Favourite tracks: clementine, Graveyard, You should be sad, I HATE EVERYBODY, 3am, Finally // beautiful stranger, More, 929 Least

amazing album. i love the tone halsey created throughout the piece, itz rlly unique and stood out from the sea of similar pop music these days. i do love some of the tracks because they were so relatable. what i thought was missing in this piece was variety. to be honest most of the tracks sounded pretty much the same. few of them rlly stood out. but overall itz better than most ive heardamazing album. i love the tone halsey created throughout the piece, itz rlly unique and stood out from the sea of similar pop music these days. i do love some of the tracks because they were so relatable. what i thought was missing in this piece was variety. to be honest most of the tracks sounded pretty much the same. few of them rlly stood out. but overall itz better than most ive heard and i would urge u to go on and pay for it. This is a very well-made, confident and daring pop album. There isn't many songs with a lot of replay value to me, but it's an album that is an ambitious and innovative enough to warrant a 7.

A very usual and generic Pop that only gives more melodrama and romance to the genera. Very few times gives something new and prefers to satisfy a massive public and with no musical exigence. Even though it's invisibility in production and lyrics, Lido and Greg Kurstin are the ones that give an authentic and attractive touch in the album that promises to have a big range of listeners, especially with the intervention of Alanis Morissette. Even if the voice of Ashley Frangipane is pretty and seductive, the lyrics and the music doesn't really promote her to give her best.

Definitely better than Badlands. Good and personal lyrics.
The only problem is that the songs are repetitive. I could ditch half of them and won't even notice.
The rest is great and I hope she stays on this path instead of garbage radio pop.

O álbum apresenta uma coesão até certo ponto e nele contém algumas faixas que não acrescentam em absolutamente NADA, fazendo com que o mesmo se torne um pouco cansativo e menos interessante de se ouvir.

The real problem is that the best ideas are outvoted by frustrating ones, leaving us with little touches like the short, yelping-like sound in the second verse of More or the distorted vocals that end killing boys. There are some good moments here, but even the best of them can’t help Halsey get out of her own way.

Manic is a rich and often confounding listen, an expansive album filled to the brim with the imagined worlds Halsey’s built for herself in the real one. It’s also sincerely, indefatigably Halsey: She puts her loves and ambitions on wholly earnest display, even if it doesn’t always make for the most consistent listen.
