An amazing album that not only follows a beautiful narrative but also displays many genres of music without seeming incongruent. The lyrics are a stand out for sure.

I'm not going to lie: I avoided anything K-Pop related like the PLAGUE for years, because I have a lifelong loathing of "boybands" and their manufactured role-playing "I'm a muzikian" pap. People around me were going on and on about this group, and finally someone with taste I trusted said I needed to listen to this album.

Sometimes I discover that I've bitten off my nose to spite my face.

The first song I experienced (not only heard, because it was the video. Thank the gods it was, because these guys area a multi-media SENSATION) was Fake Love... and I could not believe what I was seeing and hearing. Forget the fashion (I'm not into much else besides jeans and tee shirts anyway), forget that they're pretty. The MUSIC is just really great! They can sing (and not sound like a bunch of tin can wailing, produced to death, paper doll cutouts, either. *shudder*), they can spit FIRE, and they can perform like nobody's business.

The language barrier is a lazy excuse to miss this album. You can go to a dozen websites and YouTube to find translations (to some pretty amazing lyrics). I first heard the whole Tear album on Spotify -- and then I had to download it immediately.

So many things about this group are impressive, and this album shows a lot of them. This isn't your average bubblegummy crap. There is some deep and dark stuff here. They cover genres from Latin-inspired to EDM and the goth-tinged emo rock style Fake Love. That description is something that would normally melt my eyeballs and put me into a coma, but I mean it in the best possible way.

Tear covers a wild gamut of emotions on the more complicated side of love. Sad, angry, desperate, happy. A heart-rending ballad about hiding from love because you think you're hideous and a SEARING rap breakup song that will have you shrieking out bars in your living room at 3 am.

It's all here. And it's one of a VERY select few albums I will play from end to end without a skip EVERY time I listen to it.

Don't let your preconceived notions about 7 pretty Korean guys who can dance keep you away from at least giving this a shot. Or maybe two. Don't miss the videos.

Tear is not a fluke, either. Their next album, Love Yourself: Answer, covers the best of Tear and the previous album Love Yourself: Her, and paints a complete story with the highlights of the series (along with 7 new tracks). From new love, to failing love, to loving yourself. It reads hokey, but it's inspiring as hell.

It didn't take me long to get off my classic rock/grrrl rock/punk/metal high horse and become a genuine fan of these guys. I'm not a teeny-bopper either, I'm 48.

It was very refreshing to hear this new musical direction they have chosen to go for. Although some songs didn't seem to fit the narrative much at first sight, by doing a bit more research I found that that wasn't true at all. It was just not as easy to understand for me. They chose a unique way of portraying heart break by not only focusing on relationships but also oneself. That was very interesting.

I am looking forward to what else they might try out!

Love Maze is a great song to have playing at any time of the day while you get stuff done. So What...you have to be in a specific mood for that song, but if you're in the mood to jump around and shake off the stress of life, then that's the song to listen to. The Truth Untold is so emotional, is so soft and heart-wrenching. Fake Love is a good jam, the chorus...you can't help but shout out FAKE LOVE with them. And last but not least TEAR is insanely good. The way the three of the rappers wove their voices and how they sectioned off parts of the song, took turns singing different parts of the chorus, was very interesting and flowed well. The heavy breathing at the end was...I felt like I was out of breath too, overwhelmed. Expand

Special mention for Outro: tear which I can only summ up with: goosebumps. Check out the numerous translations easily available on YT and other platforms, the lyrics are really worth it. Each track has its own strong points, and all connect loosely to the album's main theme of pain and loss through a "fake" love and self-negligence. The lyrics of each track convey a sincere message, telling the tale of a persona who does not accept oneself and tries to change for others. A lesson is told-- this persona cannot experience true love without first loving themselves.

The group shines a light on the love that is experienced between a person and their own identity, not love between two different entities. It is a point that can be greatly appreciated in an age where toxic expectations may be forced upon many people, especially in the age of the internet, when media travels fast.

BTS asserts their viewpoint with this latest studio album, containing 11 starkly contrasting yet thematically connected tracks. The album spans a variety of genres including R&B, trap, ballad, lo-fi, EDM, and Latin-pop.

The first track, Intro: Singularity, is a smooth neo-soul track with haunting vocals by singer V, including tasteful soundbites and seductive beats. The vocals are dark and breathy, giving a distinct color to the already very moody song.

The lead single Fake Love, an "emo-trap banger," is an excellent example of BTS's ingenuity in redefining musical genres and superb example of BTS's text-painting.

The Truth Untold is a delicate, emotive ballad showcasing the 4 vocalists' unique, breathy tones. The raw emotion in each singer's voice truly transcends any language barrier, and shows a side of BTS the audience has never seen before.

134340 is a quirky, jazzy, lo-fi track that compares the isolation of breaking up with a lover to Pluto's demotion to a dwarf plant labeled 134340. The flute-driven beat, uncommonly heard, is an excellent touch.

Paradise is a smooth, snappy R&B track tying into one of BTS's older themes of how internal happiness is more important than having a plan for the future. The singer/rapper dynamic flourishes here, with effortless rap verses giving way to crisp choruses and adding great opening for the group's iconic ad-libs.

The 6th track Love Maze is another R&B track, albeit brighter, showcasing honey-sweet falsettos and harmonies and intricately written rap verses. The production is top notch, with tasteful ad-libs and excellent instrumentation.

The next track, Magic Shop is a heartwarming, vocally driven EDM song. The refrain of the song invites intimate sing-alongs between the group and its audience at a concert.

Airplane pt. 2 is BTS's first and very impressive venture into the Latin-pop genre. The song has a rhythmic, alluring beat and a catchy chorus, combining English, Korean, and phrases in Spanish.

The name of the track Anpanman is a tribute to a popular cartoon created in Japan. Blips of poppy, bright sound combine with high-energy rap verses and a fun chorus. The bridge of the song is an interesting addition to the track and leads into the final chorus with bright backing harmonies.

The penultimate track, So What, is a high-energy, sugary EDM banger. It is another concert worthy track that will get the crowd on its feet and shouting the lyrics to the chorus at full volume.

The closing track, Outro: Tear, is one of the rap line's most emotionally charged tracks to date. The group's 3 rappers destroy the orchestral trap beat, and include uses of static sounds to accentuate their point.

While the individual description of a track might be the polar opposite of another, the album put together in order is cohesive and tells a complete, over-arching story. The members of BTS, who have participated greatly in the production of this album, convey a sincerity and authenticity that is rare in today's music. The group has great versatility and boldness, allowing them to continue exploring and pushing their creative potential.

I am always expect much from BTS albums. And every time they give me more than I expect. This album has so many different songs, in such a genres that is trully my style. All 11. From the very beginning to the "not "end" but the "and"". And, yeah, music has no languages. It just the direction in which we are looking to the world. Listen. Enjoy. Love.

This is one of their best albums to date. It takes you on a journey of toxic love and breaking free from it from its slow intro to its hard punching outro. It makes you reflect about yourself together with the music in the album.

Other that some tracks lacking flavour, this has to be of the most coherent pop albums out there, not just in Kpop. BTS has outshine themselves and has created a record that many of their contemporaries must take note. BTS will definitely be a group people will look up to for what they have achieved.

A truly amazing body of work, Tear is proof that BTS can live up to their hype and push themselves further along their global path. This marks their third full Korean album, following after 2016's masterpiece, WINGS. Rather than showcasing their individual sides as they did in WINGS, the seven BTS members show their unity and their ability to meld seamlessly in their music as a group, rather than any one member pushing to the front or being left behind. Member V, real name Kim Taehyung, opens up the album with a sultry, haunting jazz track, titled Singularity, whose lyrics (penned by member RM) take inspiration from the Greek myth of Narcissus to describe a love gone wrong. Fake Love, the album's title track, is hit-material with its earworm of a melody, a hypermodern trap beat, and smoothly integrated angst rap. Its lyrics are plaintive and agonizingly beautiful, describing the group's desire to love someone but being unable to do so without changing themselves. Next follows perhaps the greatest plot twist on the album; The Truth Untold features Steve Aoki, known for his shaking beat drops and power production, but functions as the album's pacemaker with its smooth, stripped production, gorgeous melody, and poignant lyrics inspired by an Italian fairy tale. Members Jungkook, V, Jin, and Jimin shine as vocalists over a minimalistic piano backdrop that builds into an angst-ridden guitar climax and leaves the listener emotionally exhausted. The fourth track, 134340, is arguably one of the strongest on the album. BTS once again prove their mettle as lyricists as they use Pluto's demotion from planet to asteroid as a metaphor for a broken relationship, the number 134340 referring to Pluto's designated asteroid name given after its position change. Despite its sorrowful lyrics, 134340 is the very definition of smooth, with buttery vocals and gentle syllabic raps over a fluted trill. With the next track, Paradise, BTS begins to pull away from the album concept to address their fans more personally. Co-penned by MNEK, Paradise reminds BTS fans that it is okay to live a life without a dream or a goal in mind, as long as they are happy. The smooth, bright production and the members' rich vocal tones come together to form one of the album's most satisfying songs. Love Maze, the next track, may be characterized along with Paradise as a smooth, melodic pop song with lyrics thanking fans for staying by them even during their low points. Magic Shop functions as yet another fan song and marks member Jungkook's first production credit. A simple pop-EDM track with a Chainsmokers-like vibe, Magic Shop urges fans to give up their fears and pain in exchange for happiness. The following track, Airplane pt. 2, is a continuation of the song Airplane from member j-hope's solo mixtape, which preceded this album by a couple months. Continuing the self-reflective strain in which j-hope had written Airplane, BTS talk about their dreams of flying both physically and metaphorically and how far they've come over a sultry Latin-pop inspired beat evoking a Havana-like exoticness. Brassy, Fetty-Wap inspired Anpanman follows right after, the designated "hype song" on the album. Here, BTS shows off their ability to flex between genres, seamlessly pulling off stylistic autotune and exaggerated raps as they talk about their desire to give parts of themselves to their fans for strength, just as Japanese cartoon superhero Anpanman feeds starving people with pieces of his bread body. So What brings in a different energy than Anpanman; it feels like a hype song perfect for a large stadium or arena, which is fitting since BTS will soon be launching their Love Yourself world tour. The album closes off with one of BTS' strongest outros to date, a raw, bitter rap track which finds the three rappers (RM, SUGA, and j-hope) describing a relationship being torn apart over a sorrowful orchestral beat. The song evokes the intensity of the BTS Cyphers, tracks by the rap members used to hit out at haters and flex, but travels a different route in its lyrics, proving to BTS fans that while they are above lashing out now, they have not lost their touch. This was my introduction to BTS and, in retrospect, I think it was a really good one. They showed great range with this album, while at the same time adhering to the overall theme of the album.

While some songs, such as Singularity, FAKE LOVE, and The Truth Untold, were instant hits, it took me a while to get into others. Love Maze was one of those, but it really grew on me after a while. So I definitely recommend listening to the album more than once! You might miss real golden nuggets otherwise. I never did come to particularly love either 134340 or So What, since the former didn't strike my melodic fancy and the latter felt a little too outside of the theme of the album (although not lyrically).

One of the absolute highlights of the album is definitely Outro: Tear. Each rapper contributes with his own rap style, which really resonated with me emotionally over the orchestra. Each rapper has his own line in the chorus, playing on the "tear" concept; the first one being "you're my tear" (from crying), the second "you're my tear" (as in a rip or cut), and the third "you're my fear". Without even reading the translations, I could derive that each rapper told about his "tear" from his perspective. And oh my, was it effective.

After listening to the album without lyrics in English, I gave it another go with the translations before me. And wow. Wow. I admit, I had preconceived ideas about the depth, eloquence, and meaning behind k-pop lyrics – but they were all shattered with this album. Poetic and full of word plays! I recommend you check out articles or YouTube videos where Koreans talk about the intricacies of the lyrics, because a lot is lost in translation – which makes me dispel the "Why don't they just sing in English?" thought that crossed my mind during my first listen. I'm honestly kind of grateful, because I got an appreciation for the Korean language. It's so rich! Getting back to the Love Yourself: Tear lyrics, they were profound and meaningful. I read that Magic Shop is a song written for the fans, but I don't think you have to be one to be moved by it:
"Days when you hate that you’re you
    Days when you wanna disappear
Let’s make a door in your heart
If you open that door and go inside
This place will be waiting for you
It’s ok to believe, it’ll comfort you, this Magic Shop"

In conclusion, Love Yourself: Tear was an incredible ride, offering a lot of musical diversity and surprises and touching lyrics. It's not what I expected going in, and BTS managed to break pretty much all of my preconceived ideas about k-pop. This album really has it all, whether it is vocals or rapping, upbeat or slow, sensual or innocent. I highly recommend it – and please do read the lyric translations! You won't regret it.
