    In Times of Dragons is an album of fits and starts. Its highs are as dizzying as any in Amos’ back catalog, and her voice—now with a touch of weariness to it—is as affecting as ever. Where the record falters is in its reluctance to move past first-order readings of the world it confronts.

    In Times of Dragons is as good as anything she’s released this century. The music is slow and somber. Her piano is deep and sonorous. Her voice impassioned.
