    While this record isn’t quite as nuanced as Currents or as heavy as The Valley, it’s easily the band’s most attractive, developed, and heartfelt full-length yet.

    I'm Only Dreaming's brightest highlight is "A Song for the Birds," a bright guitar pop song featuring DuPree-Bemis' husband, Say Anything's Max Bemis, that feels like a sequel to their previous collaboration, Perma. Moments like this suggest that this incarnation of Eisley sound best when they're creating new traditions instead of holding onto old ones too tightly.

Sherri DuPree’s voice suits the dream pop sound they’re putting out, and it is gorgeously soothing. The album starts on good footing with Always Wrong and Defeatist but unfortunately doesn’t reach those heights again on this record baring one exception - Louder Than a Lion. This was the first Eisley track I’d heard, representing a parent’s protection of their child while they sleep. What hooked me was the guest vocals from an all-time favourite of mine, Anthony Green (Saosin, Circa Survive). His substantial vocal involvement in the ethereal, under-water feeling track is equally as surprising as it is satisfying. Despite me giving this a lot of airtime over the year, something that let me down about I’m Only Dreaming was the longevity of the record. I was really into it for a month but I just got sick of it too quickly, and with only 3-4 tracks that appealed to me after that, I found myself avoiding the whole thing at times, which doesn’t let it live in the top 10.
