An EP might have worked, but apparently Grinderman had to milk it for all it was worth.

    A quality accompaniment and memorial.

Ultimately, the peaks and troughs of Grinderman 2 RMX come from magnifying both the good and the so-so qualities of the original source material and from finding the most imaginative or laziest ways to refashion them.

Where RMX works, it is outstanding, but it is let down by too much flabby excess that for all its artfulness, weighs the album down like a millstone round the neck.

The individual entries on Grinderman 2 are all over the map quality-wise, from inert and utterly ignorable... to half-brilliant reframings of pretty singular material.

Just as Cave's Grinderman has toyed with the idea of how older artists should behave, Grinderman 2 RMX toys with the concept of the remix and proves that reworkings need not be danceable, they just need to appear a bit bruised.

When the tracks tend toward the predictable--which is more often than not--Grinderman 2 RMX stumbles.

There's value in finding their [remixers] take on Nick Cave's already unique sound.

Sometimes, the changes simply frustrate, as when Josh Homme rations out the hellhound gallop of "Mickey Bloody Mouse" too sparingly. But the additions can bring extra layers of exhilaration.
  10. They've enlisted non-dance musos such as Robert Fripp, Barry Adamson, Nick Zinner and Josh Homme, as well as relative young 'uns Cat's Eyes and Factory Floor, with often delicious results

Grinderman 2 RMX provides an enjoyable enough distraction but ultimately this is a collection of material that would have worked better as an EP rather than an album.
