A promising opening salvo from the most consistent One Direction member. Horan showcases his own instrumental abilities; clear, sweet vocals; and emotional vulnerability. It may be safe, but it's also laid-back and easy to listen to. Horan does what he does very well, and knows exactly when and how to edit so not a single track feels forced or over-produced.

I love it. It might not be perfect in certain areas, but someone who just started to stand on his own, it's truly a good effort for a start. Some songs sound better live and it's a testament on how talented he is, so perhaps the next album he can deliver better. But overall, this album is still lovely to listen to. And such a fresh of breath air.

A beautiful, easy, guitar driven album in which Niall shows dedication to his singer songwriter leanings. I'm sure with future albums he will show even more depth to his songwriting, as lyrically there are some weak moments. This album is more adult contemporary than pop, and is a path away from his 1D days that best showcases his rich vocals. I'll certainly be listening to it on repeat.

A cohesive and honest folk rock statement that focuses on craft, not flash. I don't know much about One Direction, but I'm drawn to Niall Horan's music. Flicker offers compelling tracks that showcase Horan's clear affection for old school folk, pop, and rock. I'm a particular fan of producer Jacquire King's work, notably with James Bay, which fits well with Horan's organic style. I'm a particular fan of producer Jacquire King's work, notably with James Bay, which fits well with Horan's organic style. His vocals are unique and evocative, with a warm and unpretentious delivery. I'm hard pressed to single out favorite tracks; I've enjoyed listening to the album as an ensemble and I frankly can't remember the last time I did that with a new album. If pressed, I'd choose the yearning Too Much to Ask, the bluesy You and Me, and the understated title track. I especially appreciate Horan's willingness to take a quiet, thoughtful, or delicate approach to a song--when so much pop music seems flashy, gimmicky, and filled with screaming vocals. In his lyrics and music, Horan isn't holding back emotionally and his honesty is what makes me interested to follow his career and see how he develops. A great debut. Expand

I grew up listening to many of the artists that Horan cites as his musical influences, so I find his album very appealing. He has a sweet voice that lends itself well to expressing vulnerability and wistfulness, but he's got a bit of a rasp too and that works well in songs like On My Own. I recommend getting the deluxe version because it has one of my favorite tracks, Mirrors. I was brought into the 1D juggernaut fandom by my daughter. I was immediately struck by Niall's voice and musical ability. Both shine on this beautifully written album. Slow Hands is the song that won't die, and rightly so. You won't hear anything like that on the radio today. It is a clever romp that takes me back to my 80s prime. Other notable listens include On the Loose, a breezy tune that will bring back memories of the one that got away, and you're glad they did. You and Me and Mirrors are sublime and deserve to be savored for the lovely sentiments they evoke. Many of the lyrics are relatable and I find myself applying them to my own life. That's a quality I never see today. All age groups can find something to sing about with Flicker. This is by far the best album of the 1D boys so far, and possibly one of the best albums of 2017 period. Expand

I'm pleasantly surprised by, what I consider, a quite solid debut album. Labeling Flicker as just pop or a Ed Sheeran album wannabe is without a doubt a mistake. Horan explores his music influences, from Fleetwood Mac to Don Henley, adapting their sound, what doesn't feel like a clumsy imitation, it feels like what it is, a young man exploring music and trying to find his own sound. I would say that Flicker is a soft rock album, but as soft rock would be described nowadays after the inevitable evolution of the genre, a new and modern way of rock. Even thought the album may not be risky in the vocal department (aside from some gems) it shows off Horan's pure and clear voice, what a consistent singer he is, and what a big control of his voice he has gained over the years gifting us with his soothing voice, some great low register verses and a beautiful rasp and falsettos that never seem overdone. I would like to recommend listening to the deluxe version of the album since it hides some treasures like the Irish folky "On my Own", the upbeat rocky "Mirrors" and the intense ballad that "The Tide" is. Horan seems to be into it for the shake of music, he demonstrates a great musical artistry, so I predict him longevity if he continues this path of constant learning and love for music. Expand

I wasn't quite sure what to expect from Niall's album. This Town and Slow Hands were very different singles so I wasn't sure how his album would sound. The album was a pleasant surprise. I honestly don't think there's a single bad song on here, but it all depends on your personal taste of music. Well done Niall Horan.

An honest and unpretentious debut, "Flicker" the Deluxe Version is an album I'm not getting tired of any time soon. For fun I popped it in my car, and all I can say is, holy cow, I was NOT expecting the kind of stripped-down acoustic sound from a former boybander. You can tell this guy is really writing from the heart. The lyrics are almost painfully genuine. Feels like you're reading his diary. And I am not kidding when I say that every single one of these songs could probably have great success as a single. They're ALL catchy and memorable and well-crafted, even the slower ballads. It takes a truly gifted artist to put out an album where you can say that about every single song. I'm just really, really surprised, but in a great way. I'll be eagerly awaiting his next one. In a day and age where there's lots of basic, meaningless fluff on the radio, this is some good old-fashioned MUSIC. Expand

It's perfect for a cloudy or rainy day. Perfect if you want to listen to peaceful but not boring songs

I was pleasantly surprised by this hidden gem of an album. Niall was the 1D guy who flew under the radar, but now he soars on his own beautifully crafted melodies and thoughtful, unique lyrics that are rich with imagery and mature beyond his years. A handful of these tunes pay admirable homage to classics of 70s and 80s rock, especially the darker, more mysterious "On the Loose," the infectious and Fleetwood Mac-esque "Since We're Alone," and the absolutely showstopping "Mirrors." These rockier tunes are complimented by a selection of easy-listening, soothing yet full and charismatic melodies. Highlights are the heartbreakingly relatable "Too Much to Ask," the sweet "Fire Away" which gives off an undeniable Cat Stevens vibe, and of course the title track "Flicker," a strings-laden story of holding onto a love that's slowly burning out right before your eyes.

For reasons unknown, there's a regular version of the album that omits three of the absolute best songs, which are only featured on the Deluxe version. To enjoy this album to its fullest, consider "Flicker (Deluxe)" the only option for you. In addition to the aforementioned "Mirrors," the celebratory Irish-drinking tune "On My Own" is this album's 11 o'clock number and showcases Niall's truly fantastic vocal ability, and "The Tide" is another folk-rocky track that you'll want to blast over and over again, belting out every word.

Not a One Direction fan? Well, here's a news flash: Niall Horan ain't One Direction. He's an artist all his own with a one-of-a-kind voice and stories to tell through his music that are undoubtedly going to span generations of dedicated listeners. 10/10 for "Flicker (Deluxe)." Go get it, slide into the CD player in your car, roll down the windows, crank the volume, and rock out to a heck of a debut.

I think that it's a solid debut album. I think that he's really just getting started, but he has a sound that is really well defined already. And I genuinely *like* this album. It's relaxing and chilled out, and the type of music you put on when you want to get away from it all. So good on him. It would be even better if it was a live album, funnily enough. Maybe that's next.

the best album to come out of 2017 with no doubt.
Niall really outdone himself, his bandmates and even his band with this album, loved every bit and piece of it lyrically and melodically.
I think it's clear to see how much One Direction held his talent and potential back, he was really unappreciated and underrated even tho musically he's the most talented one out of the five, going solo
