I’ve been listening every day since it came out, love it! Not a single song I’d skip, except for watermelon sugar. It could be because of how much I listened to it before the album came out, but I can still listen to Lights Up and Adore You and I’m still not tired of it.

The kind of album that finds the fine line between all that’s good about modern pop/rock and the eclectic eccentricities of classic rock. Think Fleetwood Mac meets Hunky Dory Bowie meets Mark Ronson. Don’t let critical snobs or boy band archetypes hinder your decision to listen and go into this realizing this is the ascension of a new artist free from that aforementioned boy band.

This album is an emotional trip. From high to lows. The production is beautiful, real instruments, beautiful lyrics. His voice is soulful. You can discover treasure in the tracks Even after listening to them for a whole month. The last track Fine Line, it’s just made for a movie soundtrack. We’ll be alright...

While his debut self-titled LP was a pleasing collection of beautiful odes to soft rock and britpop, Harry Styles' second effort sounds like its altered, upgraded, better-crafted, grown sister. "Fine Line" is so well arranged, ranging in style and in sounds, but still being so aesthetically cohesive. It kinda, sorta, tells a story, not a new one, from being in love ('Golden', 'Adore You')While his debut self-titled LP was a pleasing collection of beautiful odes to soft rock and britpop, Harry Styles' second effort sounds like its altered, upgraded, better-crafted, grown sister. "Fine Line" is so well arranged, ranging in style and in sounds, but still being so aesthetically cohesive. It kinda, sorta, tells a story, not a new one, from being in love ('Golden', 'Adore You') to being heartbroken ('Cherry', 'Falling'), to the getting over ('Sunflower, Vol. 6', 'Canyon Moon') and peace-finding ('Fine Line'), but it sure tells it with great music playing in the background.

The whole project exudes personal energy, like really confessional lyrics ('Falling' is literally an entry from Styles' diary) or just real-life recordings (Camille Rowe's voice as the ending of 'Cherry' is such a moving addition to the already beautiful track). Another impressive thing is the variation in sounds and styles, going from rock on 'She', to ukulele-based alternative on 'To Be So Lonely', to Vampire Weekend-esque indie sounds on 'Sunflower'. It all plays out so well, coming to the beautiful closer, which happens to be the title track, on which Styles asserts repeatedly "We'll be alright", such a basic, but exquisite-in-its-hope line.

Both aesthetically and musically pleasing, "Fine Line" is a step (or a leap) in the right direction for Harry Styles' career.

"Fine Line" feels more pop and commercial than his previous album. This, however, doesn't mean it isn't good. The album is very enjoyable and playful. It truly feels that he has taken the best of his One Direction days and all what he has learnt this few years as a solo artist. While his debut album felt a bit monotone, "Fine Line" brings a lot of joy and emotion to the listener. It truly feels like a nice and confident evolution for the singer but still on his way to define himself and his music. The use of a gospel choir, intelligent harmonies and good production makes the album a must for pop-rock music lovers.

Harry Styles’ second album definitely sounds different than his first. There are few songs (from HS1) that sound lot alike his second album concept but they too took me few listens to start liking them. First listen was hard for me since it barely sounds like nowadays’ mainstream music, which is a good thing, considering many artists’ put out alike music. It definitely took me few listens to start liking this album. When you compare Fine Line to the 70s, which apparently what inspired HS during the process of recording, it will never match to David Bowie, Stevie Nicks, and such. It’s not necessarily a bad thing, because HS somehow still came out with original sounds

GOLDEN’s opening has a One Direction feeling to it. It put me on nostalgic mood for a moment. Sounds a lot like most stuff he put during 1D’s days in Four era.

WATERMELON SUGAR has ‘funny’ lyrics. Looking at how he has ‘Kiwi’ back on his first album, it seems like HS is keeping up with his fans’ inside joke of having him made an entire salad fruits as his songs title. However, it’s apparently a sexual song. This proves HS is a good songwriter with his metaphor-plays in this song. Some melodies have same feeling to “Olivia” in 1D’s old album

ADORE YOU is the song with more “mainstream music” feeling to it. It’s catchy and easy to like. With a more upbeat melodies, it contradicts the sadness you can see through the lyrics. HS also managed to pull one of the most clever promo tactics with his music video and Eroda. It’s a good watch. Would be down to see him make a whole album visual, and continuing Adore You music video.

LIGHTS UP is my favourite out of this album. I personally think the melodies along with lyrics, song’s art work, and music video match up really well. HS managed to represent this song greatly because of that. The only downside is it (sadly) repeats the same lyrics over and over. I think HS could’ve done better to it. All in all, it’s still a great song

CHERRY has a sweet and heartbreaking feeling to it. I love that HS managed to show glimpses of his personality and personal memories through this song without having to tell us explicitly. The voicemail at the end proves it. A normal, simple snippet of conversation but yet seems more personal since it’s attached to HS’ memory, sorta heartbreaking to hear.

FALLING is the expected slow song of an album. It paints a sad time during a break up perfectly. HS wrote quite numerous relatable lyrics on it. With a simple mellow melody of piano, he managed to speak his hurt to the listeners

TO BE SO LONELY is yet another sad song with happier tone of melodies. If I had to rank all of the songs on Fine Line, this definitely will come out last. A song I’d skip on my playlists. Not my cup of tea, but would love to hear it again if HS ever made an acoustic / more mellow cover of this.

SHE has old school rock feeling. It’s too bad that HS didn’t put more high notes on it. It seems like he’s reflecting on a one night stand memory, or a love at first sight nostalgia but was beautifully put

SUNFLOWER VOL 6 is a very summer-y song. A little snippet of his memories going through Long Distance Relationship and unexpectedly, instead of cute or sweet lyrics, it has more sexy ones. It’s not Fine Line if it doesn’t include a good portion of sad lyrics too, a good balance to it

CANYON MOON is a more nostalgic song. HS reminisce his memories here, with more country (?) sounds to it. An easy listen and it succeeded in making me feel nostalgic too

TREAT PEOPLE WITH KINDNESS has the title that attracted me into buying both digital and physical albums. Felt disappointed that it doesn’t represent the title well. HS had a great opportunity of turning it to a hit, alongside Heal The World and Earth. I felt like it was a wasted opportunity. Though, it has more “feeling good” vibe that actually puts you in good mood

FINE LINE is the closing song. Just like it’s role, it’s longer than the rest and has a closing melodies for the album. I personally think it’s way too long with the same over repeated line. However HS put a good end note through the lyrics that made it good

In terms of songwriting, Styles takes a step back from his self-titled record, his first. But in terms of aesthetic and vision, it’s leagues ahead. It’s a shame the songs aren’t stellar, because the vibe certainly is, but luckily, it’s got a few absolute hits — namely, “Adore You” and “Lights Up” — to serve as highlights and permanent playlist fixtures.

Harry não era o meu 1D favorito, mas com certeza me parece ser o único que até agora soube o que quis fazer uma vez que todos seguiram caminhos distintos. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Let me preface this by saying I am a rock fan. Harry Styles has always been the odd one out of my playlist, as everything else I listen to is much... harder? I've always appreciated this guy's influence of old classic rock and his enigmatic pretense both in real life and in interviews. Harry has such an intelligent, mature soul (I honestly get the vibe that there's something more to him but I'm gonna keep that to myself). OK, this isn't a review on Harry himself, but the album Fine Line. Let me start out by saying this; it was okay. It wasn't trash, it wasn't mediocre, it wasn't bland, but it wasn't... excellent. it's definitely a 7.5 for me. Only 2 songs had me really genuinely embraced in the music, and only 3 could manage to suck me in. It seemed like, while the others held significance they just simply lacked depth, like everything that wanted to be said was stated directly.

'She' was a knockout for me, probably one of the best songs of 2019. The guitar was IMMACULATE the channeling of 70s-80s rock with the vocals on the chorus sent shivers down my spine, and did I mention the guitar? The song pulls you in and doesn't let you go. You feel high while the guitar solo plays. Honestly, give me an album of just Mitch playing that guitar and I'll buy it, I swear. 'Fine Line' (the song) was probably second best for me. While people say that the constant repetition of the title is annoying, I just get more and more emotion from it every time its sang. Anxiety and tension build until it's released with the smashing of drums. Truly a wonderful closing song! Other notable good songs were 'Golden', 'Lights Up', 'Adore You', and 'To Be So Lonely'. Sunflower gets an honorable mention.

Now, what this album lacked that his first album did so well: the 'Kiwi' moment. There was no jump up, scream the lyrics at the top of your lungs and thrash moment on Fine Line and it was... disappointing to say the least. The hyping up of 'Watermelon Sugar' to be the next Kiwi led to an underwhelming reveal. I don't like that song at all, I'm sorry. I refuse to even compare it to my darling 'Kiwi'. Harry Styles, if you're out there, just know that I am still so upset that Medicine had a chance and yet you put in Watermelon Sugar. Medicine would have been the second best song on the album (yes, 'She' is better than 'Medicine', i admit that) and it would have been the kiwi moment we deserve. Please Harry, I beg. It doesn't even have to be on an album just please release Medicine.

All rants about Songs aside, this is a fun album, and easily one of the best releases of 2019. If you compare this album to the other ones released this year... yeah it's probably like number three or something. But in the general history of music, and of Harry Styles, it really isn't too high...

By the way I am still salty about what Harry did to Medicine but that's fine it's cool. :)

"Adore You" is a passionate longing for something that won't work so rather than commit to it he revels in enjoying it's luxury. His first number 1 with a chorus that smart it's no surprise it took over the charts. In what I see to be the only misstep "canyon moon" Harry still sounds good but the song is empty, just words set to song without the personality that reinforces the strength his performances. The fun self depreciating "to be so lonely " is a short lived groove bound for many shower karaoke's. But out of all this and maybe his discography is the grabd title track. Omg i cannot stress the tracks draw. It's lyrics guilt and regret feel grown up and the instrumental build up and eventual catharsis (with trumpets even!) comes exactly when you need it. Despite it's 6min runtime it doesn't overstay it's welcome. It's a beacon of hope for what Harry is capable of and a crown in his discography. Expand

Fine Line is not a bad album, but it seems like Harry isn't quite sure of his musical direction (no pun intended). His surprising, self-titled debut album combined different influences and sounds as well, but they were held together by their similar instrumentation, consistent tone and high-quality, but understated production. The sound of Fine Line on the other hand seems all over the place, there's not much common ground between the radio friendly, but lightweight pop songs, introspective, acoustic guitar songs, psychedelic reggae, campfire country etc. What's missing though are any good, fast rock numbers that were a highlight on his debut album (and in live concerts) or a timeless hit like Sign of the Times. Instead he included a track called Treat People With Kindness, that appears involuntarily comical in its Kumbaya anthem attempt.

All in all there are some really good elements on this album, where Harry can definitely show his versatility and vocal prowess, but against his biggest competition - himself on his previous album - it appears confusing, of less consistent quality and falls ultimately (both musically and lyrically) short.

The three pre-release tracks are way more interesting than anything on the album. They sound like they belong to a different project.

You can hear him struggling in some tracks despite the autotune. He's definitely going to have to change the keys to perform this. Overall, it's not bad but it doesn't live up to the hype and over the top praise. It doesn't bring any emotional moments

Except for the song Fine Line, which is definitely an ode Lucifer with intro that sounds like satanic ritual chants, all other eleven songs are classic earworms and pleasant to the senses. Fine Line is (as you can hear) heavily inspired by creative geniuses like: David Bowie, Paul McCartney, Fleetwood Mac etc. Every song has that something that makes it interesting and fun to listen to. But it's not Harry Styles, and he is not yet on the creative level as those other artist where they found what fits them. Harry still plays around a bit too much with the sounds of other artists (heavily inspired). He hasn't really found what fits him, yet. And even though both of his albums are good and fun to listen to, I had hoped he had found a bit of his own style/lane a bit more on this album. It's very distressing for Harry Styles to try to go of the genre "Rock". Yes, he is extremely talented, but wanting to be like a David Bowie of this generation is not very sure.
This new work has managed to be worse than the previous one, songs that I don't quite understand what message you want to convey, but maybe with one or two that still won't let it be a musical disaster.

Everything that people have said about the emptiness of the lyrics and the not-so-inspiring nature of the melodies is on the mark. The Wall Street Journal review is the most honest professional review I've seen. Every other professional is covering their real opinion with what to me is masterfully crafted rhetoric... They won't directly say it's below average, but the way they are beating around the bush with hands-off phrases are the same thing I do with people who have done poorly, but I don't want to discourage them with outright criticism; so I encourage them with abstract criticism that doesn't seem like they failed, but is not direct praise, either. I notice so many reviews trying to make this album "seem" good by comparing it to what great musicians have done and what this "attempts" to do, without saying directly that it doesn't quite meet up to the standards of those others' great works. Fine Line proves that the musician has absorbed the best lesson passed down by California’s great musicians: Don’t be afraid to take chances within a folk- or pop-rock framework, as that’s how you create iconoclastic music that endures.
