Not up to the standards set by Definitely Maybe or Morning Glory, this is still a good Oasis record with a great song from Gem and your standard kick ass ballad from Noel.

Back to basics alright. Musically it is much more tighter and simpler than their recent attempts. My favourites are Keep the Dream Alive, Love Like A Bomb, Part of the Queue and God Thinks Im Abel, some great guitar riffs (love like a bomb and Dream) and some great singing (duet on Let there Be Love). The Beatle Revolver esque A Bell Will Ring is also a good rocker. All in all, not Back to basics alright. Musically it is much more tighter and simpler than their recent attempts. It seems to me this album is coming out at a perfect time to make a Star Wars analogy. Oasis' first two albums were brilliant, equilivent in greatness to A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back. The next two albums resembled the Star Wars prequals - both pretty much sucked but still appealed to their core audience (virgins for Star Wars, Anglophiles for Oasis), who tried to convince anyone and everyone there was inherit merit in the movies and albums on the sheer basis that it was a Star Wars movie or an Oasis album. With Don't Believe the Truth (and Sith), the Star Wars analogy becomes complete, whereby both franchises have redeemed themselves. With 3 or 4 listens you start to really appreciate the musical gems present here like the piano in 'Love like a Bomb' or the harmonica on the otherwise uninvolving 'Mucky Fingers', which is probably the hardest song to warm to here. Unusually, the single 'Lyla' is probably the best track (that just tells you how good it is) but 'Turn Up The Sun' is a typically fabulous opener, 'Guess God Thinks I'm Abel' is the best song Liam has ever written by miles, and 'Let There Be Love' is simply beautiful with Liam's best vocal in years. The musical craftsmanship of this song and also 'The Importance Of Being Idle' highlights best the departure this album has made but it's all good, which is the main thing. 'Part of the Queue' is a Noel classic anthem but while 'Keeping the Dream Alive' and 'A Bell Will Ring' are good songs in their own right, I think they will ultimately be forgotten. For Oasis, the 10 years after the release of What's the Story Morning Glory were made up of 3 average albums that had the occasional good song on them but the blunt songwriting and bloated production definitely outweighed the best moments. I feel "Don't Believe the Truth" was the antithesis of this. In 2005 Oasis returned to 1965 with an acoustic rock sound ala Ray Davies and The Kinks with a nod to "Rubber Soul" as well. As usual for an Oasis record, its full of 60's influences and copy and paste jobs but they do a really excellet job of it on "Don't Believe the Truth". This is also the only Oasis album where Andy Bell and Gem Archer make worthwhile contributions ("Turn Up the Sun" and "A Bell Will Ring" are as all out rock as Oasis have ever gotten) and Liam's contributions are the best work he'd done with the band up to this point. For once, the spirit of democracy paid off within the band. Liam's vocals are also excellent throughout the album. Noel's songs are still the highlight of the record but it is the one and only time that an Oasis album doesn't completely depend on him for high points. Noel wrote 4 tunes in this album, and this tunes are the highlights of it. Unfortunately, Liam, Gem and Andy can't match his level. But it was amazing to see Oasis back into the mainstream.

  1. Yes, the rumors are true: Oasis has--for the first time in a decade--made an album worth hearing.
  2. Mediocre melodies ride atop formulaic songwriting.
  3. In the end, it's Oasis's attempts to capture former pinnacles, from trying to re-create the simple sunny-side-up pleasures of "Live Forever" to trying for another album-ending mountain like "Champagne Supernova," that keep their latter-day output so entirely forgettable.
