At times, though, her songs [on her first two albums] ran the risk of sounding too similar, bleeding into each other both sonically and lyrically. She obliterates that notion in Daughter From Hell, which she co-produced with Dessner, digging deep and experimenting more than ever before. .... Abrams has taken enormous leaps with her vocals here, too.

Real feelings don’t make for risky music on their own, they just make for real feelings set to music. Daughter from Hell has plenty of the former and not nearly enough of the latter.

Clearly, there’s a lot of poetic licence involved in dramatising these mature revelations, but the dissonance between Abrams’ goth-coded emotional turbulence and the music’s insistent, quivering prettiness is the real uncrackable case on this bloodless record.
