Hip hop as a genre and culture has been around for 30+ years. Throughout all the years, with the many artists, the many albums and all the songs, throughout all the changes and movements... Hip hop the culture and genre of music as we know it has come to an absolute peak with the release of 2017's "DAMN." by Kendrick Lamar.
It is the culmination of everything that hip hop has been through over the last 30+ years. Telling a twisting tail of death, damnation, violence, love, pride, and fear through the eyes of the African American, we get a personal glimpse into the psyche and lyrical prowess of one of the greatest living hip hop artists. With Kendrick's vocal changes that keeps your mind racing, stories that keep you on the edge of your seat, beats that make you question whether to dance or lock your doors, and a vision more vivid and real than an oil painting, Kendrick's fourth album is exactly what the music world needed. Lyrically, visually, musically, compositionally, culturally, and historically, "DAMN." is the pinnacle hip hop music crafted by the premier musical artist of today's generation.

"Good Kid, m.A.A.d. City" (2012) is about the life of a black man growing up and living in Compton, CA.
"To Pimp A Butterfly" (2015) is about a black man living in a turmoiled America.
"DAMN." tells the story of a black man from Compton living in America in its most vulnerable state.

    All hail King Kendrick.

This album is not good, This album is DAMN Great. Once again the one and only Kendrick Lamar has made another fantastic album. He's now 4 for 4 so far of his career that he's put out a masterpiece of an album. I totally love all the songs from Kendrick Lamar, Loved the Beats, and I Loved the production on the album. Master of Poetic Justice (aka Kendrick Lamar), Damn even went on to win the Pulitzer Prize and the board sees Damn as “a virtuosic song collection, unified by its vernacular authenticity and rhythmic dynamism that offers affecting vignettes capturing the complexity of modern African-American life”.
In an age of Rap Beefs and Mumble Rap, Kendrick clearly carves his own niche with his lyrical poetry, from the streets of Compton CA to 12-time Grammy Winner, K-Dot has brought out some of the greatest hip hop hits of recent times... Damn is one of em. The tracklist ranges from HUMBLE. with a strong message to LOVE ME, showing his unconditional love to his fiancée. None of his tracks sound monotonous and aren't filled with Drugs and Gang-Banging and others, that we've come to listen by some other Rappers out there.
Kendrick hasn't disappointed me with his releases, and they just score greater heights.

When I finally heard the album, start to finish, I didn't understand what it was all about, and I gave it a second listen, the second it ended. It is safe to say that the album is VERY different than anything the Compton rapper's ever done, structurally, sonically, and in some aspects, lyrically. However, different proved to be VERY good for him, since every single track stands on its own, and the political, racial, and social themes dealt with are as deep and as important as ever. DAMN. is very diverse in sonic tone, as each track differs from trap beats to jazzier sounds to some very left-field sounding beats that Kendrick still makes work. His usual group of producers were stellar on this project. It is a much less cohesive effort than his his previous projects as far as sound goes, but as usual there is a general theme for the whole record. Highlights: DNA (Kendrick is on full spaz mode here over a heavy trap beat), ELEMENT, LOYALTY (with a great Rihanna feature), PRIDE, HUMBLE, LOVE (although this song is not Kendrick at his artistic peak, it is still a very enjoyable track), XXX (surprisingly, the U2 collaboration works very nicely and Mike Will Made-It delivers another ferocious beat, as he did in DNA and HUMBLE), FEAR, GOD, and DUCKWORTH (the story in this track is incredible). The album isn’t as strong as TPABF but, the track on the album does sound better. Kendrick isn’t spitting that super political message like he did on TPABF but, his lyrics and bars are more fun to listen to on this album.

This album will probably be 2017 the best hip-hop albums and top 10 albums of the year and receive many Grammys nominations.

The lead single, HUMBLE is an overall great track but, it isn’t the best from this album. There are far better songs than Humble.

The single isn’t the best on the album, but it is one of the best singles of the year. This track could also end up getting an Oscar nomination, depending on what other songs he decides to put out as a single.

Kendrick Lamar is taking a Kanye West approach with his albums. Every album sounds different from the last. The thing that Kendrick does well with his new sound is keeping it hip-hop. This album doesn’t have that jazz feeling or west coast hip-hop feeling, it actually sounds like more of the newer radio hip hop stuff, but, it still sounds like real hip hop.

Overall, this album shows that Kendrick can change sounds and still sound great.

9.3/10 - Great tracks and lyrically his best, but it lacks the overall strong message and storytelling like TPABF and GKMC.

However, there are a few artists that I listen to where I need to drop everything just to listen to their songs and pay attention to every lyric, especially when it's new. However, there are a few artists that I listen to where I need to drop everything just to listen to their songs and pay attention to every lyric, especially when it's new. One of these artists is Kendrick Lamar, who I was admittedly late to the hype train for. 2015's To Pimp A Butterfly was one of the best albums I had ever heard in my life, so I knew that nothing he ever did again would match it, let alone top it, but I wanted him to at least come close. In this regard, DAMN. has met my expectations, but this isn't a bad thing.

Seeing how every other album up until this point has sounded different from the last, it's no surprise that DAMN. follows this trend. TPAB was heavily influenced by jazz, making it sound more like a blast from the past than a modern expedition, but DAMN. has filled that gap for someone looking for the ladder. Kendrick has somehow made a more mainstream album that still sounds unique. There's just track after track of musical genius. HUMBLE., DNA., ELEMENT., and LOYALTY. all now rank among my favorites of the artist. Almost every song on here sounds amazing, and even the one's I don't like I can still appreciate the quality of.

My one gripe with DAMN. is that it lacks the strong overall message that was present in TPAB or the stageshow-like storytelling of Good Kid, m.A.A.d City, but this is a small complaint because the music is still consistently amazing and entertaining to listen to.

Easily some of Kendrick's best work. 9/10.

With his popularity skyrocketing, Kendrick is literally a king at this point and he's reached the top, but this seems to be where the road ends and Kendrick doesn't know where else to go from there. Kendrick expresses his many feelings throughout this album on heavily personal level. While there are a few upbeat tracks like HUMBLE and ELEMENT, a majority of this album is low-fi and dark, and Kendrick's storytelling and lyricism is flawless. The craziest thing about the album, is that every song has a connection to one another, which was made even more clear on the final track DUCKWORTH. I even read that Kendrick and one of his producers scrapped many tracks from the album to make this happen. Overall, while DAMN is not Kendrick's best project, it is still an amazing accomplishment in hip-hop music conceptually, and is indeed a must-listen.

Kendrick offers another fantastic album. Despite not having TPAB's unique sound or not being as fresh sonically as GKMC when it came out in 2012, DAMN. offers a more accessible and easier listen to his music. Kendrick's lyrics, different voices and flows remain as good as ever. It lacks the cohesion that had TPAB but as a result the album shows a great variety of moods. However, some of the more commercial appealing songs like LOYALTY or LOVE feel kinda out of place, maybe for their position in the tracklist, or like if Kendrick was not really convinced of which direction this project would take in terms of sound. This is more remarkable in the song GOD., probably the only low point I've found. Production distanced itself from the Jazz infused sound of TBAP and met at a middle point between trap beats with some pop flavourings. With regards to lyrics, Kendrick never disappointed and this project wasn't a place to start. Subject matter, cadence and flow were outstanding throughout, which is something we have grown to expect from the Compton native.

Although this album was far and beyond satisfactory in quenching the overwhelming hype-thirst developed by the rap world, I can't help but feel like this change in the direction both sonically and lyrically is missing something. Either I'm still feeling the effects of overinflated expectations from the hype leading to its release or I have to sit with it a little longer than the 24 hours it's been out.
I think it might be the latter.
    It's definitely the latter.
But until that epiphany happens, I'll settle for a 9/10.

What I can say about this album is that it feels very "of the moment," almost as if it were a mixtape. This is probably spurred on by the fact that the album only came out 2 years after TPAB and only 1 year after Untitled Unmastered, but also because it feels like a reflection of what Lamar feels right now. His previous 2 full length albums were recollections of his past- GKMC was a retelling of Lamar's youth and TPAB was a retelling of Lamar accepting himself as a black man. Damn is Lamar providing music set for and is for the here and now, which explains why it would draw comparisons with Section.80; Lamar has not provided this level of spontaneity in a long time.
Damn also shows the clear reasons why Lamar is constantly regarded as the best rapper right now- amazing lyricism mixed with fantastic production.
If I were to compare this album to the rest of Lamar's discography, I would put this over GKMC(slightly!) and Section.80, but definitely does not have the earth-shattering impact that TPAB had. But to be fair, TPAB is an extremely hard record to beat and DAMN does not seek to have the same impact. Kendrick has already cemented his reputation as one of the greatest rappers of our time, and this record only strengthens that.

A breath of fresh air from both Kendrick and 2017 so far. From start to finish, you can really tell that K dot was intentional on this album. There was a story being told and the songs fit together in a cohesive way and yet were still distinct. Kendrick chose to go with a more commercial sound, most likely to cater to the fans that found TPAB too intense. However, Kendrick still manages to produce a unique sound with DAMN. The production is mostly minimalist. DAMN draws from soul, psychedelic, and gritty electronic influences to allow Kendrick's voice to be the sole focus of each track. He pushes the limits of his voice, using falsettos and tone-changing flows, while maintaining his masterful lyricism. DAMN is obscure compared to Kendrick's other works; Kendrick expresses himself more subtly in this album. There is a coherent theme in the album though. While TPAB dealt with societal issues, DAMN is more intimate and allows us to see Kendrick deal with the emotional conflicts that have followed him from childhood to stardom. The thesis of the album is stated in the first song, BLOOD. "Is it wickedness? Is it weakness?" This issue is explored through the album with contrasting tracks. Do we sin because of our wickedness, or are we forced to by our weakness? Are the wicked actually the weak acting in self-defense? Kendrick dives into issues such as these, using himself as a template. He juxtaposes each track with the next to illustrate each side of the issue. For example, the smooth, introspective PRIDE is followed by the explosive, braggadocious HUMBLE. No track is out of place, and each track transitions perfectly to the next. With DAMN, Kendrick Lamar again creates an album that transcends rap. Expand

With the lyrics Kendrick is mainly discussing his normal subjects; being black, America, asserting his dominance on the rap game, etc. Although he isn't as political as in TPAB. Kendrick is definitely shooting for a more mainstream sound like Good Kid, m.A.A.d. City was, and I'm not massively enthusiastic about that, considering how great the Neo-soul, funk type sound of To Pimp A Butterfly and Untitled Unmastered sounded. I understand however that Kendrick needs to move on sonically rather than just keep doing the same thing album after album. So while my opinion on this new sound isn't as happy as some other people have been about it, I highly commend Kendrick for trying something new.

Lyrically though, Kendrick is still on top. He is far more introspective about himself than on To Pimp A Butterfly and Good Kid, m.A.A.d. City, albums that were more about Kendrick's surroundings, that being Compton in GKMC and this new Hollywood life on TPAB. DAMN. has Kendrick thinking about himself, his own insecurities and dualities, and his continued faith in God.

Overall, DAMN. doesn't top the masterpiece that was To Pimp A Butterfly, but it does succeed at following it up with a different sound with flying colours.

This album is totally different from his previous album "To Pimp a Butterfly" that incorporates elements of free jazz, funk, soul, spoken word, and the avant-garde and explores a variety of political and personal themes concerning African-American culture, racial inequality, depression, and institutional discrimination. Kendrick Lamar presents his most episodic and expansive project "DAMN." Beat switch in XXX. & DNA is the best moment to me as music producer and listener, usually as listener, you don't expect this type of switch. Lyrically, Kendrick Lamar is 100 % and really like his storytelling and mainly in his song that title as "Duckworth", this is the strongest song on the whole album that tells us how Anthony “Top Dawg” Tiffith (his record label owner) who had planned to rob a local KFC where Kendrick’s father, Ducky, was working. The robbery could have resulted in Ducky’s death, but his generosity caused Top Dawg to refrain from committing the robbery. This happened many years before Top Dawg would coincidentally sign a 15-year-old Kendrick to his label Top Dawg Entertainment.

Here are my ratings from each song on this album:
    DNA. - 10/10
    YAH. - 6/10
    ELEMENT. - 10/10
    FEEL. - 9/10
    LOYALTY. - 7/10
    PRIDE. - 8/10
    HUMBLE. - 7/10
    LUST. - 10/10
LOVE. - 5/10 : This song in particular was a let down for the project. Kendrick's vocals felt a little lazy for an album like this, and in my opinion it sort of turned into cheesy quickly written lyrics that were catchy, but not mastered in the way that the feeling of LOVE. should be depicted.
    XXX. - 9/10
    FEAR. - 10/10
GOD. - 9/10 : A lot of people did not like this song but I really could not understand why. Well written lyrics, a simple but effective chorus, I could agree that Kendrick might not be sounding very, I dunno, Humble but he is what he is, an inspiration to listen to and an excellent rapper whose lyrics are always from the heart.
    DUCKWORTH - 10/10

Conceptually, Kendrick's deepest most personal piece of work, with connections between every individual song being incredibly paramount to a structurally fractured tale about faith, which is supported by Kendrick's razor-sharp, masterful rapping as well as his incredible gift at using wordplay and great lyricism to deliver authentic, vivid stories. Furthermore, Kendrick's musical direction shifts once again as he reinvents himself in yet another masterpiece of the genre. Kendrick substitutes smooth, rhythmic jazz for raw, intense beats used in tandem with distorted, warped instrumentals, to supplement the juxtaposition-based, duality centered story line he's created to highlight his personal strife and its relation to faith. A less deranged response to celebrity than Kanye West’s Yeezus, more imaginative than Eminem’s The Marshall Mathers LP or Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter III, it shares with the former an economy of form, and with the latter two the giddy energy of an artist coming into perfect sync with their audience. It’s also a sumptuous sounding pop record, polite streamlined mass market psychedelia. [Jun 2017, p.64]

The beats are heavy, spare, and hard. Lamar demonstrates the versatility of his flow.

DAMN. sees the rapper make a 180 degree turn from the sprawling jazz/funk/hip-hop odyssey of TPAB to deliver 14 taut, tough and wise cutting-edge examples of what’s possible in hip-hop today. ... Essential stuff.
