There is a literary cohesion to the words, adding an intellectual padding to the power chords fans have come to expect. .... “Another Beautiful Day” features a stunningly gorgeous solo. .... If Courtney Barnett’s Creature of Habit can claim a masterpiece, then “Same” is definitely a contender.

Thematically, Creature of Habit is remarkably consistent, all 10 tracks addressing the positives and negatives of routine. Rather than feeling tedious, however, the honest self-criticism and self-acceptance proves comforting.

This is the message of Barnett’s fourth: that a blind leap of faith is better than wearing a further groove into your rut; that actually, if it is broke, you should fix it. Because perhaps songs as rewarding as those on Creature Of Habit are waiting on the other side of such a change. [May 2026, p.85]

Barnett’s fourth record Creature of Habit sees her replace rip-roaring rock with earnest self-reflection, all while leaning into a softer sonic palette.

Seldom does she stray from the path we’ve come to expect of her, but that’s not necessarily to a fault. Creature of Habit itself reminds us that not all habits are bad.

Creature of Habit is another respectable entry in her increasingly understated and overlooked discography.

It sounds uniformly excellent – often radiantly sunny – but for an album concerned with wheel-spinning, it spends a lot of time doing exactly that.
