Tbh I would rate it 8/10. Not my cup of tea. I tried to love it when it came out but I absolutely hate country music. Folk walks a thin line bordering country. I rate it 10/10 because I love Lana too much not to help her garner attention again. Even through sites that don't have much impact at first glance.

Time after time, I think about leaving
But you know that I never do, just 'cause you keep me believing
I love you lots, despite the odds
    You're killing me, Joe
And all these thoughts brought us apart
    And that's okay, too

Since NFR in 2019, the expectation created on this album is, I would say, even frightening for the artist. Definitely one of the best in her discography.

I love the symbolism of chemtrails as we can connect that to memories, thoughts, fame, and more as there is nothing wrong with thinking about these things, but we must let them fade out ans not get too obsessed that we lose sight of the present and what our future holds.

Throughout the album, we get a glimpse of what Lana thinks of her pre-fame life and her thoughts on the dangers of fame, but to counter the dark side of fame, she states that it is best to stay wild, stay free, and to remain true to you. She reminds us that what happens in the past is often necessary and it’s okay to not want to change a thing as those things make us who we are. Lana once more addresses freedom and true freedom is not being chained down by your past or current circumstances. You can think of your past, present, and future, but you do have to let them fade like chemtrails.

Another aspect of this album that I appreciate is its nod to previous albums while still remaining a standalone piece of art.

Lana Del Ray continues to hone in on her signature sound and her captivating storytelling and she proves that she can take it even deeper and further on this album. I found the songs to be very well written and i also generally liked the minimalist and folk direction of the production, most of which was handled by the brilliant Jack Antonoff. Every song is captivating, mainly because of the stories that are being conveyed. White Dress is really odd and brilliant at the same time because of her vocal perfomance and her whispery vocals. The title track which mainly consists of a piano is also really good as it has these nostalgic lyrics. The post chorus on Tulsa Freak Jesus is really captivating and the song is really good. Let me love you like a woman is also really well written with really great layered vocals on the chorus. The rest of the album offers some great songs which are well written and produced. The last 2 or 3 songs though, i found to be a bit uninteresting and underwhelming. Other than that, loved the album. Expand

Coming out of Norman F*cking Rockwell, I had a lot of expectations. Not only was NFR the renewal I waited for since Honeymoon (I didn't like Lust For Life more pop-ish influences very much) but it quickly became my favorite album of all time. It accompagnied me in a suicide attempt, a breakup, a recovery and the pandemic.

Whilst NFR sounds like a late-august love letter for Southern California and it's small towns like Topanga, Calabasas and Malibu and everything that goes in the alleys that populate those, Chemtrails over the country club sounds and feel like a journal in the unknown of middle-america, red states and bible belt. Right off the bat, White Dress welcomes you in a violent, heart-wrentching way, Lana's rambling about the time she was 19, carefree, bussing tables at Ruby's. What else can be said about that superb introduction? It surpassed my favorite opener, "Cruel World" (from Ultraviolence, 2014) and is one of Lana's most complex and personnal song along with Mariners Appartment Complex.

Most of the first tunes are really good, although Tulsa Jesus Freak falls under the underwhelming category - with White Mustang (from L4L) and Guns N' Roses (UV) - with autotune embelishements i don't care for. I will say that Lana repeating "White hot forever!' sounds beautiful and haunting. It saves the song.
And this is the problem with Chemtrail's tracklist; they all fall in the "Underwhelming" category up until something saves it. Take "Dance til we die" the song would be an absolute bore if it wasn't for Lana howling to saxophones in a 60's psychedelich transe on the bridge.

Whilst I enjoy most of the tracklist, it just has less replay value. I find myself often in my car going for bops of NFR (F*ck it, I love You, The Greatest, California, etc) rather than coming back to White Dress, Dark but just a game or Yosemite. For me, all of Lana's albums respond to a particular mood: Born To Die/Paradise is nostalgia, Ultraviolence is anger, Honeymoon is resignation, Lust For Life is light-headed joy, NFR is the natural balance between optimism and pessimism (about love, work and the state of the world) and Chemtrails just isn't as defined or clear about what it is trying to get from you. Is it wanderlust? Maybe. Is it Autumn settling in? Maybe. Is it that moment you reflect on the past? Maybe.

We don't know and I'm not sure Lana knows herself. Most of the songs are enjoyable, and it's a very solid EP, but it's hard to follow (rather: impossible!) the near perfect Norman F*cking Rockwell.

The rush and delays of the era left me wanting more from Del Rey, as the album feels slightly unfinished. I hope that we will see more of her skills in her upcoming record, “Rock Candy Sweet”.

An elegant album defined intricately by its soothing melodies and tunes, complemented by Lana's raspy voice. So versatile and unique that I find myself often drifting into a different world!

Chemtrails has a very minimalistic production most of the times, but that makes it perfect. The album has impressive up-tempo moments that are quite rare on Lana's albums, and the lyrical content as always is very strong.

Expand

Lana Del Rey knows how to make an album. This is solid body of work. The amount of space she creates is impressive - somehow she (most likely do to mastermind, Jack Antonoff) manages to include all instruments (from piano, to percussion, to saxophone, etc) and yet it feels stripped back - whereas her classic vocal range remain center stage. It’s as if everything revolves around her voice - instead of drowning it (in previous records), she amplifies it and plays an active role as the director. The only time she lets the production enrapture her is on the track “Tulsa Jesus Freak” which she uses a lot of reverbs and also (for the first time ever) autotunes her voice. This doesn’t mean that it works against her, it’s a stunning song and one of the many standout tracks on this album. She’s able to portray her vulnerability on the latest single, “White Dress” and at first, it was a choice...but at the end of the second chorus, it works in her favor once the instruments swell up behind her. There are a lot of storytelling elements in this album but in particular this track because there’s a strong contrast between the verse and the chorus. The verse is to signify her present older self and her past younger self, is sung in the chorus. This could be attributed to her getting into poetry BUT to be honest, she’s one of the greatest songwriters of this generation. The title track also swells up in the instruments on the second chorus and ends with stripped back drums. Lyrically, she’s speaking about normalcy but feeling wild at the same time. The next several tracks are my favorite; “Let Me Love You Like A Woman” (strong contender to being nominated for a Grammy) expresses her desire to leave with her lover and waiting to hear from him (the bridge is absolutely killer as she hits her high octave, yet sung in away that’s melancholic), “Wild At Heart” samples NFR’s “How to Disappear” on the chorus and the vocals add some country elements liken to a girl group from the 70s. It’s beautiful, swells really nicely and is an ethereal piece. “Dark But Just A Game” reminds me of “West Coast” with a bit of The Beatles. The structure is so unique, shocking and thrilling that it deserves repeated listens. “Not All Who Wander Are Lost” is guitar driven, camp fire feast about being wanderlust deprived. The only song that didn’t quite stick to me but can be a grower is “Yosemite”. It might be due to the overuse of Elton John’s “Candle In The Wind” or that it was a reinvention from a Lust for Life reject. I have to say I wasn’t a fan of NFR’s “The Next Best American Record.” “Breaking Up Slowly” is a duet with Nikki Lane and it’s refreshing to get someone that’s so rooted in country. It’s a quick 3 minutes, but effective. “Dance Til We Die” is about pushing forward and keeping your head up. The message might not work with another artist but with Lana, this sentiment rings true. When she sings “why” at a higher register, it’ll lift your spirits. As soon as your comfortable, she throws in a hoe-down, throw-down bridge and it’s such a surprise. The accompanied sax is also glorious.
“For Free” is a nice but safe end to the album. It duets Zella Day and Weyes Blood, the latter adding significant depth in range. Overall, this is Lana at her most experimental. I thoroughly enjoyed this record and I hope to buy the vinyl soon.

Dark But Just A Game é outra faixa que merece atenção. Lana compôs a maior parte do álbum, exceto a faixa final, For Free, composta originalmente por Joni Mitchell.
Em geral, Chemtrails Over The Country Club é um ótimo álbum.

In Chemtrails, Lana feels in doubt but, nevertheless, very sure of what she feels and desires which is perceptible through vocal sounds that were not present in her previous records.

It’s hard to resist the sensory impact of these songs. Chemtrails picks up the nostalgic thread of 2019’s Norman Fucking Rockwell!, though here she’s mostly Midwest and more melodic. [Jun 2021, p.25]

“Tulsa Jesus Freak” is arguably closest to the Lana Del Rey longtime fans know and love, and it’s no surprise that it was written in 2019, around the time NFR! came out. “Yosemite” is another highlight, a stunning number with Del Rey’s vocals at their best. But most songs on Chemtrails don’t stand out. They blend together in their delicateness.
