Lana Del Rey has never vocally sounded better than she does throughout this album with her higher, middle, and lower registers used throughout and sometimes they are even used in the same track, which I love and keeps things interesting. The production to me is like a survey of the best sounds of Lana’s discography, which keeps it from falling into the trap of sameness or extreme similarity that we saw on “Chemtrails Over The Country Club” even though I love that album, too.

The title track, as good ones do, pushes a common theme on the album, how things in life may present as something at first, but fade into something else. Elsewhere, we see how the pain of the past can be escaped, but not forever as you have to address it and choose to rework your story/life where you are in charge of the narrative where you are free to find the beauty in the pain, heartbreak, and betrayals as opposed to being defined by it.

“Text Book” has Lana singing about rewriting history, setting the record straight about who she is and what she believes, finding truth and admitting that
“maybe just the way we're different could set me free” while speaking of disappointment, false hope of happiness, and broken promises on the title track.

On “Arcadia,” Lana once more shows her bittersweet, conflicted affinity to L.A. while admitting her own fragile nature and knowing her time might be numbered there as she truly doesn’t belong: “My body is a map of L.A. / And my heart is like paper, I hate ya / I'm not from the land of the palms, so I know I can't stay here / I'm not native.”

My favorite lyrics come from “Beautiful” as it shows the value of sadness and using that sadness to create something beautiful, which Lana does so very well, alongside her desire to be left alone to create what she wants to create: “What if someone had asked Picasso not to be sad? / Never known who he was or the man he'd become / There would be no blue period / Let me run with the wolves, let me do what I do / Let me show you how sadness can turn into happiness / I can turn blue into something beautiful.”

Along the same lines as the previous song, “Violets For Roses” takes a more personal approach to the idea of being asked and even forced to change for someone else:
“You made me trade my violets for roses / You tried to trade in my new truck for Rollses / Don't forget all of these things that you love are the same things I hate / A simple life, I chose this.” Personal choice is a way to assert authenticity, which is something she has hinted at and stated since “Get Free” on “Lust For Life.”

A very well crafted album, arguably more personal to Lana and far surpasses her previous album Chemtrails Over the Country Club.
The collaboration with Miles Kane on Dealer is very exquisite to listen to.
Blue Banisters is in the top 3 of my favorite albums and without a doubt the best of this year.

This album are a truly full experience. THIS is how Lana Del Rey sounds like. That glamorous melancholy that makes the world stop for a four minute song. Don't have enough words for this, but: This is art. And, Lana Del Rey is doing this better than anyone.

Piano, depth and strength. Lana del Rey is art and its quality is not maintained, it is transformed into sensations. There are no lyrics describing how well done this is.

I feel like this is the album (I have been waiting for) we should have received in 2017, had we been in another timeline and she had not chosen to go the route of Lust for Life, and then met Jack Antonoff (probably due to the inclusion of older songs). BB joins UV + HM in the trifecta of excellence.

While the days of Born to Die have long since passed, Lana Del Rey is still seeking paradise, closer now than ever as she turns her search inward, seemingly recognizing that paradise is ultimately found within the best of oneself. Still, if there is indeed a physical Arcadia to be revealed, it has not emerged in its entirety on Blue Banisters. That said, its intoxicating hints are enough to keep seekers thirsty.
