Lana narrates a story that empowers any fan that struggles with the reality of stifling ones true self for the sake of being 'accepted'. Blue Banisters, one might say, is an album Lana has been making her entire career, what with some of the songs recorded as long ago as 2013. Truly an experience, living the life of a living legend.

'blue banisters' however stands out among her other projects that also possess this charm, projecting a wider diversity in sonics and vocals through the addition of intriguing elements. despite this, lana holds her ground as a melodic maestro and songwriting supreme throughout the entire one hour experience. the inclusion of recordings dating back as far as 2014, understates her consistency and legacy as one of the finer storytellers of the last decade.

similar to her 7th project 'chemtrails over the country club,' released seven months prior, del rey takes charge and goes deeper with driving her songwriting towards an introspective, positive outlook longing for simplicity and community - swapping out her trademark 2012 hollywood glamour and gloom for john deere tractors, target parking lots and lockdown zoom calls all while feeling liberated and empowered by the company of her 'sisters,' demonstrating her ability to truly turn something blue into something beautiful.

though the record's length and the complexities of some elements may be jarring at first, listeners will quickly come to appreciate how this album encapsulates a supercut through the years of her musical career, her life and where it culminates now all brought to fruition by some of her most personal and intricate writing.

I do think that this album perhaps sprawls a bit too much, but I also feel like I can't complain; Lana Del Rey is one of the best songwriters of this generation and I'm just glad that we can have as much as we've gotten. Dealer is absolutely gorgeous; I love the way she sings "I don't want to live!" I love the way we've been permitted to view her in Black Bathing Suit: "The only thing that fits is this black bathing suit / Looking at me, looking over at you." I love the lyrical transformations she makes, like the jump from "Dance me all around the moon / Light me up like the Fourth of July" to "Dance me all around the moon / Like six times 'til I'm sick and I cry." This album is intimate in a way that needs to be treasured. It's not my favorite of her records, and definitely not her most compact, but there are great moments here that should be listened to over and over again. Expand

Alright, I just went through my first couple listens, and these are my thoughts. First of all, there's something about the conveyance that I'm not 100% sure about. Like she literally served us an amazing lyric referencing Picasso's blue period and NFR, but then its just "Beautiful, beautiful / Beautiful like you" in the same tone as the rest of theAlright, I just went through my first couple listens, and these are my thoughts. First of all, there's something about the conveyance that I'm not 100% sure about. Let's use "Beautiful" as an example. Like she literally served us an amazing lyric referencing Picasso's blue period and NFR, but then its just "Beautiful, beautiful / Beautiful like you" in the same tone as the rest of the song. Like I just want her to go swooning in there "Shades of Cool" style and DELIVER that chorus. Just a little bit harder on the vocals in certain areas of the verses/choruses and I feel like it could have made a bigger impact on a lot of the tracks. I still love "Beautiful" nonetheless, and I hope this makes sense.

Now. My two absolute favorite things about this album are its vocal layering and melodies. This is usually one of the biggest reasons I love Lana, but there's something about this album that is just especially enthralling in this regard. These elements are what make my favorite songs off Blue Banisters, including "Violets for Roses," and "Black Bathing Suit." I'm not sure how she did it, or ever does it, but she ate and left no crumbs in this department. "Thunder" is certainly a standout track as well imo, which was a pleasant surprise considering I wasn't a huge fan of the demo version. Prior to the album's release, I pretty much never listened to the first three singles (nor did I respect them as I should've), but I revisited them this morning and dayum. I'm still not feeling the title track entirely, but I suddenly adore "Text Book" and "Wildflower." Again, the melodies are just *chef's kiss*.

    Arcadia doesn't need an explanation.

To continue, I know I said that her vocal technique needed to be pushed further in certain areas a second ago, but it must also be mentioned that she took many risks, especially with "Dealer." We've never heard our girl sound like this before, and even if you don't enjoy it, you must respect her for trying something new.

Also, I know its not a *Lana* song, but "The Trio" interlude is everything! I honestly kind of wish she would have included more influence from that sound, at least a little bit, but then again, I've always had a burning desire to hear that from her. Some people want Californian Lana, I want Blondie Del Rey and El Mariachi LOL. Don't know why.

This isn't my favorite Lana Del Rey album, but I'm already bonding with quite a few of the songs. To be fair though, I don't think she could beat Norman Rockwell in my mind, nor could I get the same feeling I did when I listened to "Cinnamon Girl" for the first time, ever again. Right now I'd say its coinciding with Honeymoon and Lust for Life, maybe a tad higher. I certainly love this one more than Chemtrails Over the Country Club, which I still haven't grown attached to and only listen to "Yosemite" on occasion. (I'm sure I'll regret that notion someday, when I finally fall in love with it) Overall, this is certainly an amazing listen for both old and new Lana fans, and doesn't contain a single skip.

Instant favorites: "Arcadia," "Interlude - The Trio," "Black Bathing Suit," "Thunder"
Quickly falling in love with: "Text Book," "If You Lie Down With Me," "Violets for Roses," "Wildflower Wildfire," "Nectar of the Gods"
Least favorites: None really, but "Cherry Blossom" atm, if I had to pick. (Gorgeous, just underwhelming)

Edit 10/23: Okay, I bumped up my rating to an 8 and Violets for Roses is officially a fave. I'd also say its solidly above Honeymoon (The Blackest Day is still queen though). Pretty sure BB is going to 100% beat out LFL by tomorrow.

A warm summer evening, a terrace, a candle, a glass of quality alcohol. The patina of the past, melancholy, a cinematic experience. If you approach this piece with silence, delicate arrangements and haunting vocals, you are in for a powerful musical treat.

High highs followed by low lows. I don’t know what to make of this record to be completely honest it felt lazy and lacked cohesion however it somehow works. Definitely some future classics like ‘living legend’.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I think this album is a little more interesting in its style than chemtrails. However, it also seems a little more chaotic to me. The interlude offers a strange and rather inharmonious transition and could perhaps have come before the interesting eccentric "Dealer". I like that the otherwise very nostalgic Lana draws references to the current social situation, such as Corona and Black Live Matters.
Her lyrics deal mostly with the same topics as in the past (daddy issues, drugs, toxic relationships), but that's her focus in life, which she also has to deal with psychologically. Overall, the topics are dealt with a little more grown-up and perhaps a little more reflective than a few years ago, with beautiful metaphors and complex storylines that even allow you to dive a little more into her world. Especially when it comes to the relationship with her family (father, mother, sister).
Overall a good and interesting album. It is a shame, however, that many songs have already been released or leaked beforehand. There weren't many surprises, because half of them were already known.

The album is quintessential Lana. Many of the melodies are decent enough. The album is definitely an improvement over Norman Rockwell. But I was waiting for that "wow" moment that never really came. Dark Paradise is still her best work to date.

LDR fans will likely find lots to love on "Blue Banisters," as Lana's soaring vocals and melancholic lyrical musings remain as stellar as ever, but newcomers/general listeners may find their patience tested by instrumentals so stripped-back they're nearly non-existent as well as the nigh-comatose pacing of the album's first half before it truly springs to life in the second.

Very seamless and extremly forgettable. Lyrics are hardly ever a point of contention with Lana but with these one's it feels close to a Lana del Rey imitator trying to evoke the cool of "video games " and atmosphere of tge Ultraviolence Lp. Nothing feels worth your time. Arcadia the lead single meanders blindly almost asking to be skipped. Blk bathing suit is a sad shadow of the adept prose and delivery of Ultraviolence(an obvious reference point). Textbook is almost a highlight but collapses under it's own ideas. And whether the proximity to her previous record has a play but I doubt it as many artists have done close releases, Blue Banister (&chemtrails of the country) feel like B side compilations no one really needed. This mediocrity might satisfy die hard fan's and people comfortable with an album being words and a beat that achieve no enjoyment, but as a fan who would be continuously floored as Born to die was topped by honeymoon and honey moon by lust for life and that by NFR ,a fan who had seen an artist with one of the most streamlined discography's I remain in the place of my chemtrails disappointment. I applaud her for raising issues of our social, political and cultural current affairs in some songs, but it is also worth mentioning that in others there was unnecessary padding that makes the concept of blue banisters confusing

While the days of Born to Die have long since passed, Lana Del Rey is still seeking paradise, closer now than ever as she turns her search inward, seemingly recognizing that paradise is ultimately found within the best of oneself. Still, if there is indeed a physical Arcadia to be revealed, it has not emerged in its entirety on Blue Banisters. That said, its intoxicating hints are enough to keep seekers thirsty.
