The group explore lyrical pieces such as Blossom with equal aplomb, with Marsalis playing burnished soprano on Solstice. Jarrett, who has been left unable to perform after a stroke in 2018, will doubtless enjoy every charmed minute.

Ultimately, Belonging feels like a full-circle moment for Marsalis, bringing both his group's history and his long-gestating passion for Jarrett's music into his quartet's vibrant present.

“Belonging” lives up to its name with a series of sleek parallel lines of playing that ultimately intersect. There’s a minimum of friction and a maximum of concordance on that track, which might well be an accurate means to summarize the whole of the Branford Marsalis Quartet’s Belonging.
