The Album by BLACKPINK is one of the best Albums of 2020 so far, it has no skips at all. The songs can also have each Music Video because of it's Quality. I love the girls' exquisite voices specially Lisa's rap parts each song. Blackpink deserves more recognition and I'm hoping for them to snatch a grammys nomination next year. By the way, track 'You Never Know' is my favorite song from THE ALBUM.

Ice Cream is a fun song that definitely cheers you up and makes you feel instantly happy. Pretty Savage was insanely good and well-produced; I can go on and on... I will never stop praising the quality that this album carries. I was shocked at how good they sounded, because this is indeed their first full album. Even a song like You Never Know has the “it” factor and the representative colors of BLACKPINK. My only complain is that it was too short, but I’m sure 100000 people have said that before. I’ll definitely be checking their next album, this is god-tier material. These girls are one of a kind and so talented! No wonder why they’re taking over the world, they’re definitely breaking the language barrier. I’m so happy I get to experience this with them. Expand

This is by far the best pop album released in recent years. In an age where hip-hop, r&b, and disco tracks are the trend right now, releasing an album like this is risk-taking yet refreshing. I applaud blackpink for bringing back pop nostalgia without it sounding outdated. I look forward to their next project which I believe will be better than this one. They always seem to outdo themselves.

As a musician, I love noticing every aspect of a song. I hope my thoughts help you appreciate the songs more or at least make you be more self-aware of all the elements.

    1. How You Like That: I admit that when I first heard the single, I hadn't liked it because I was still new to Korean music and I'm normally put off by trap elements, but after a few more listens, the song grew on me. It's really interesting melody-wise and the off-key "that" part in the chorus is so smart. As a vocalist, I love little things like that. Lisa's rap is definitely a scene-stealer, the instrument in the background has such a unique sound and I would've never imagined it on a rap part. Even though I can't speak Korean, I can't stop singing this song.

    2. Ice Cream: This song was really hard to get into for me. It has silly but fun lyrics and it's raw bubblegum pop, I had only liked Lisa's rap when I first heard it. I came around to appreciate the other rap parts in between the verses and the high notes during the pre-chorus. Selena's voice fits perfectly with BLACKPINK though, it was cool to hear someone from my childhood sing with a group I currently admire. Even though it's my least favorite in the album, it's really fun to sing along to because of its silliness.

    3. Pretty Savage: The title says it all. BLACKPINK didn't come to play around. You could say this is close to a diss track, but it's a really good one. While this song is really hip-hop/trap, it has pop-y elements that actually work pretty well. I'm not too fond of parts like the "oh-oh-oh-oh" because it's been overused, but I think it helps to build up to the badass chorus and give listeners a break from the amount of spicy lyrics. Also, Jisoo finally said "BLACKPINK in your area"!

    4. Bet You Wanna: This bubblegum pop/rap song has a lot of interesting factors. Rosé's voice stands out the most for me, she pulls off some amazing Ariana Grande-like melodies and harmonies, especially by the end. It's a really catchy song, I love the chorus and bridge. I really wanted to hear Jennie and Lisa rap with Cardi though.

    5. Lovesick Girls: I will say I thought I'd hate the song because of the teasers, but I was wrong. The song kicks off with an amazing beat and guitar that generate such a great mood already. I'm personally in love with Lisa's and Jennie's rap, the lyrics are perfect and the electronic notes playing in the background bring me back to the good ol' mainstream pop days. While the chorus IS as pop-y as I had expected, it doesn't bother me because the lyrics are good and it surprisingly fits the song really well. Shout out to the Rosé rap-like bridge, and congrats to Jennie and Jisoo for finally getting writing credits!

Side story: A friend asked me what the song was about because he got confused over "We were born to be alone, but why we still looking for love?" So I analyzed it for a few seconds and I realized it could be interpreted as searching for self-love as well, which I think is very clever.

    6. Crazy Over You: Jennie starts off strongly on this one. I can't get "I've been known to kiss and tell, send girls to wishing wells" out of my head, haha. It's such a badass verse. Can we talk about the flute (or whatever instrument that is)? It's really impressive how well it goes with the electronic elements. Overall, it's a really sexy song and I dig it so much, I wanna dance along to it!

    7. Love To Hate Me: This is my favorite of the album. It was really hard to come to this conclusion because all the songs are good, but damn, this one, the vocals and melodies are from another world. The verses have such a nice flow going on with its fun lyrics and soft vocals, I'm obsessed. They're followed by powerful high notes and then sassy rap breaks to finish it off with a cool chorus. When Lisa's rap comes off later, it just takes your breath away. Like, how did this song get even better?

    8. You Never Know: Jisoo starts off this song so beautifully with sweet piano chords playing beside her. Then we get to hear Lisa's soft voice right after, I honestly love hearing her sing since she mostly gets rap verses. This song feels emotional from the start, it feels personal, whether or not you know BLACKPINK's story and what they go through every day. Usually, ballads tend to be last on my rankings because I simply would rather jam to something fun, but this is one of my favorites from the album. Side note: I love how Lisa starts off the second verse, such a cool melody.

If I had to rank the tracks, it would be something like this. I judge songs based on lyrics, instrumental and vocal melodies, and the level of freshness, I don't like listening to things I've heard before.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. How You Like That - was fun but ending drop was so dull and vocally it was weak the chorus was ok nothing special really typical edm sound.

Ice Cream - fun instrumental and Lisa's rap part really made that song 100 times more interesting in general Selena's future was useless i just see no reason for her to be there.

Pretty Savage - very blackpinkish beat chorus is enjoyable Jisoo little rap part was fun and i loved how they switched up at the end. Bet You Wanna - they definitely were hittingfor the radio and the west market with this full English song in general pretty minimalistic beat and Cardi verse was short and PEGI if you know her you will understand. Lovesick Girls - Anthem for sure beat was slick and popish also you can tell that David Guetta was one of the producers definitely not bad track.

Crazy Over You - Rosé flexing her vocals on this one in my opinion definitely one of the strongest and best produced tracks on the album it was fun and not too long rap parts were good too.

Love To Hate Me - sounds like a cool pop song that part in the beginning reminds of red velvet IN&OUT and coldplay HYMN FOR THE WEEKEND but it was fun and i like the lyrics "you ain't worth my love if you only love to hate me" good message.

You Never Know - knowing Jennie situation and how much she been through her singing "you never know uless you'll walk jn my shoes everybody sees what they wanna see it's easier to judge than to believe" it makes it even more meaningful also i like the production it's not over the top.

So basically i liked it could'vebeen more tracks but i had a lot of fun listening to it.

I wouldn’t say is perfect yet it’s diversity make it work as a whole; with different colors and vibes from how you like that to you never know gives you a complete experience of what BLACKPINK is. It may lack some punches or maybe i wish it was longer than 8 songs, but The Album did a great job as a full record.
In terms of production is amazing, even though i wished it had explored new sounds and genres; the successful 2020 pop formula is there in songs like ice cream and pretty savage, they are catchy and totally centered in the mainstream market but the lack of innovation can be dangerous in times where the masses are always looking for new experiences.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. For a very first album with only 8 songs, BLACKPINK outdid themselves. Every song is very catchy and quickly wins you over. But it is completely different from their usual music. Each song has different vocal range, rap flow, and emotions in it. From HYLT to YNK, it was a complete package, where Pretty Savage makes you feel confident, YNK will leave you an emotional wreck. It deserves every achievements it is getting so far and some more! it's a FULL Album by South Korean standards.
The Album has no fillers, each track can be a hit on its own.
The vocals from all 4 members are the highlight.
I just like a couple more tracks

If you are trying to be edgy like some of these mainstream "no talent" critics this Album is not for you, the Bars will cut you to shreds.

i've been a blink since the start of this year. i've always viewed their music as very fun and not necessarily trying to be deep or meaningful. there's nothing wrong with that, but with this album, blackpink proved they could be more than a group that makes fun music and can explore a range of topics.

the defining song of this album is definitely "lovesick girls". it's an anthemic song
i've been a blink since the start of this year. i've always viewed their music as very fun and not necessarily trying to be deep or meaningful. there's nothing wrong with that, but with this album, blackpink proved they could be more than a group that makes fun music and can explore a range of topics.

the defining song of this album is definitely "lovesick girls". it's an anthemic song that explores why people continue to seek love and validation after being hurt time and time again. it's a song that doesn't song like it's trying to be a hit, which is a much different direction for the group and shows that, while they can make songs that are pure fun, they can also explore interesting and deep topics.

i love everything about this album and the girls' vocals really shined, especially on "you never know", another heartfelt song that discussed the rampant harassment of idols.

i didn't expect to like "bet you wanna" because i'm not the biggest fan of cardi, but it's so chill and almost ethereal that her feature doesn't even bother me.

i don't have much to say about the other songs, but don't get me wrong, i love them as well. "how you like that" is one of my favorite releases of the year. i'm very impressed by the cohesiveness, an element that was somewhat absent from their past releases, of the album as a whole.

i really only have 2 complaints about it. i think some of the choruses were a bit underwhelming and pretty savage needed some improvement. but besides that, this might be my favorite album of the year.

Very solid pop album. All the girls shine on it & they display all their talent, specially Lalisa Manoban. Only bad song is ruined by its feature, Bet You Wanna, why would you add a bad rapper on a band that has 2 amazing rappers already?

O "The Album" solidifica o BlackPink como um dos maiores atos pop do momento. Porém, em alguns momentos, falta originalidade e versatilidade dentro das melodias e letras, o que não impede o projeto de ser sólido.

The first single from the album, ‘How You Like That’, serves as a loud and energetic intro to their first full body of work, appropriately titled ‘THE ALBUM’. The second single from theThe first single from the album, ‘How You Like That’, serves as a loud and energetic intro to their first full body of work, appropriately titled ‘THE ALBUM’. The hip-hop fused EDM track refuses to show any shocking abilities that the group members possess, instead choosing to allow listeners to dance and not care about lyrics or any hard-to-sing high notes. The second single from the album, ‘Ice Cream’, includes appearances throughout the song from American singer Selena Gomez, who is used as nothing but buzz to help the song perform better in western music markets. The group could have performed this song without her, however she certainly is necessary to the song and it’s success, as it explains why the song is such a drastic change in comparison to BLACKPINK’s previous recent singles. The actual song itself doesn’t appear to be that bad, being a basic pop song that many western music markets would enjoy.

The third song (and promotional single?) from the album is the upbeat ‘Pretty Savage’, which showcases the groups’ abilities with melodic rapping, and to use a lot of curse words. Despite this, the song is actually good, however it seems to be what was going to be the third single from the album, before the group received complaints from some fans claiming that this sound was not what they wanted anymore.

The fourth song, ‘Bet You Wanna’, contains an absolutely necessary feature from Cardi B, as she ensures that the song will not become lost and forgotten by the general public. Her verse also adds to the song, which would have been boring without her addition. However, to have a song featuring the popular American rapper Cardi B, it would be common sense to make it a single to promote your group. However, the people behind BLACKPINK were too stupid to even see how this could help promote them in western music markets, further adding to their success.

The third single from the album, ‘Lovesick Girls’, is an extreme drastic change from the group’s previous releases. The electropop and EDM single evokes a nostalgic feeling from 2010s pop music, likely due to David Guetta’s involvement in the production, and earns Jisoo and Jennie their first writing credits, and Jennie her first composition credit. The song is, by far, the best song that appears on the album, and adds credibility to the group’s versatility within their singles.

The sixth song from the album, ‘Crazy Over You’, is the second full English-language song. The song takes inspirations from hip-hop, trap, and uses Arab instrumentation, which is usual for the group to delve into different cultures. The song features strange onomatopoeia and interesting flow and rhythmic choices in the rap sections, overall leaving the listener questioning if the group’s condition has worsened for their first album.

The seventh song, ‘Love To Hate Me’, is the third full English-language song from the album, which is a bass heavy dance-pop song, where the lyrics focus on clapping back at haters of the group. The group don’t do a very good job of this, but the result was a good song so the lyrics don’t matter too much, which is something shown in all BLACKPINK songs. The song finished with a rap verse done by rapper/dancer Lisa, who’s inspirations clearly lie within African-American culture, specifically with the use of AAVE. However, this makes you question whether this is genuine inspiration, or a mock of where this style of music and word delivery originated. The final song from the album, ‘You Never Know’, is a ballad the provides the same purpose as the song that appears before it, but at least vocalist Jisoo finally gets a chance to show off her own vocal abilities.

Overall, ‘THE ALBUM’ seems like a rushed piece of work that the producers knew they could release due to fans of the group waiting so long for new content. However, maybe it would’ve been in their best interests if they just released another EP. The reason why I rate the album so high is solely because of the third single, ‘Lovesick Girls’, which is an extreme improvement for the group, and is, in my opinion, one of the best songs released by an artist in 2020. The title also seems like a laugh in the faces of fans who waited so long, coining the phrase “where is the album?” which has now because the actual albums’ title. However, as appropriately titled it may be, it doesn’t actually appear correct as this 8-track project appears to be just an extended EP, instead of a full body of work.

This is how you enjoy music without even knowing the meaning of the korean lyrics, proving how they be producing good musics and literally no skip songs on this album. Lovesick Girls is their best song. It’s pure perfection. I don't know why some people don't like Ice Cream...that is one of the my favourite song in this album.

Crammed chockfull of crowd-pleasing EDM pyrotechnics and cheeky one-liners, The Album is undeniably a product of a well-oiled, state-of-the-art pop machine, but it feels stuck looking back to tried and true trends in both K-pop and Western pop music.
