Oasis were forgiven through the biggest bad-album streak in history yet Coldplay, a band whose worst album IMHO (Mylo Xyloto) is still leagues better than the rest, are never given a chance. Good thing the general public disagrees. I can't praise this album enough; have a feeling in a few years time this will be regarded as one of the great albums. Neatly bookended by the title track (a track that reminds one of U2's triumphant start to The Unforgettable Fire, A Sort of Homecoming) and the closing track Up and Up, which is haunting, glorious, epic, and melacholy at the same time (with nothing less than a gleaming guitar solo from former scoffer Gallagher), and containing unexpected, shimmering melodies in between, this album works for anyone, Coldplay fan or not. So my message is: NEVER MIND THE BOLLOCKS, give this album a listen and you will love it. Guaranteed Expand

Loved the album a lot and it is according to me 2015's best release. Can't believe critics rated it so low.
After a few listening s, it grows on you. I say don't go on what critics say and give the album a chance. Tracks like - Hymn for a weekend, A head full of dreams are amazing.

It is a more lighthearted album that is mostly forgettable. But there are a couple of songs that are good. One is the song "Hymn For The Weekend", which in my opinion is the best song on the album. Other songs that are good are "Adventure Of A Lifetime", "Army Of One" and "Everglow". "Up&Up" and the title song "A Head Full Of dreams" are alright but feel like they are a bit rushed. TheIt is a more lighthearted album that is mostly forgettable. In the end the album is alright, but could have been better, they should have taken more time to add better songs to make this album great. However the few songs that are good make up for the bad ones.

After 7 albums, Coldplay deserve to be pleased with themselves, having produced 3 great pop rock albums in "Parachutes", "A Rush Of Blood To The Head" and "Viva La Vida or Death And All His Friends". What Coldplay should be less pleased about is that the most recent of their truly great albums was released in 2008, almost a decade (and three albums) ago. After the downbeat but likeable "Ghost Stories", "A Head Full Of Dreams" goes back into Mylo Xyloto territory in terms of tone and texture, pop songs laced with production techniques and studio trickery to make them sound current and contemporary. The problem with this approach (and this can already be seen in Coldplay's back catalogue) is that this month's current sound, whatever it may be at the time, dates incredibly quickly. Coldplay's early material was timeless indie rock gradually progressing to stadium rock. The band's early singles still sound good to those of us who picked them up when they were released. Everything they've done post 2008 has followed a pattern of initially swamping the airwaves and then quickly disappearing, rarely to be heard of again. How often do you hear anything from Mylo Xyloto these days, a mere 5 years after it was released, in comparison to the likes of "Clocks" or "In My Place". I wouldn't go as far as to say they are now exclusively producing disposable pop but their music is beginning to take on many of that genres characteristics. The point here I guess is that rating "A Head Full Of Dreams" now, while it's still relatively fresh, could be a different prospect in a couple of years time. Reviewing it today I have to score it reasonably highly. It doesn't achieve the heights Coldplay hit in the first half of their career but it comfortably sits with what they've produced in the latter half. It's got 11 tracks with track 8 containing 2 songs. 2 of these are interlude type songs that add very little so what we're dealing with is essentially a 10 song album. Half of these tracks are excellently written and produced and while some may dismiss them as ear candy, there is no denying that the tracks are enjoyable. The rest of the material alternates between being average and good. Highlights for me include "Fun" with it's outro lifted from "Viva La Vida" and "Army of One/X Marks the Spot". I can see the Coldplay fans who got on board at the start with "Parachutes" struggling to really develop a love for this one and perhaps the Coldplay train is now beginning to run out of steam. Having said that, this is still an enjoyable album and one that I'm glad I bought. Expand

It's just a period; the band will stay like this for a while and then go back to its roots. Rush went back to its roots in the nineties, twenty hundreds, and twenty tens (e.g. Clockwork Angels), and Queen would have gone back to its roots had Freddie Mercury not died. Coldplay's going to escape this pop period; they'll just be here for a while. While they're here, though, there's a lot to enjoy. Expand

A band that can do whatever they want no matter which genre and still sound that good, is something worth listening, always.
The Good: 5th track Adventure of a Lifetime has that classic riff-Coldplay that everyone loves, just don´t watch the video.. 2nd track Birds really shows what a great album it should´ve been if had a more rock-oriented production.. That was again reflected in 9th track Amazing Day, which reminds X&Y-era ambition and open space for the guitar to breathe a little. We finally get a guitar-solo-kind-of-riff at last track Up&Up, but wait, that´s Noel Gallagher, and it couldn´t be anyone better to do it.
The bad: 1st track is really nice until it stops for an annoying oh-oh-oh-viva-la-vida-stadium-style chorus.. Why would ANYONE think that´s a good thing for a studio-track, or even worse, an album opener? Gosh.. Minus 2 on this one alone.
Conclusion: Despite being really good at pop, Coldplay is truly great at rock. That´s a fact. IT WON´T CHANGE.

Parachutes through Viva la Vida is some of my all time favorite music. It got me through some rough times, and made me feel "alive again."

Now, it seems as though Chris took all of the criticisms to heart, believed the **** labels people stamped on his music, and changed accordingly. All of the Coldplay hate made the band feel out of place when they weren't, and they compensated by believing and embracing these falsities. I can't defend Coldplay anymore, because they have become exactly what everybody foolishly claimed they were, as if to seek some sense of security by saying "Yeah, so what?! There's nothing wrong with being a superficial pop band! Just watch!"

Don't get me wrong, there are still great moments on this album. Birds, Adventure of a Lifetime, and the title track prove that Chris and the gang can still write killer melodies. But lyrically, this thing is a mess. I always thought Chris was a decent lyricist, but over the last couple of albums, he has produced some of the corniest nonsense I have ever heard from the band. It's almost hard to believe that this was the group that produced the legendary Rush of Blood to the Head. What was once a worldly and conscientious musical group is now just another mainstream pop giant with flashy advertising. Want proof? Watch the first 30 seconds of Adventure of a Lifetime's music video. They say it's about the music, but blatant product placement like that says otherwise...

I don't know what happened to masterminds behind "Clocks", "Don't Panic", "Viva la Vida", and "The Scientist", but something has gone astray, and I can only blame it on the ridiculous and unjustified hatred thrown at the band for so many years. They finally let it get to their head.

Coldplay is having an identity crisis.

    Still above average. 6/10.

"Hymn for the Weekend" stands as the worst, most manufactured song on the record and the fact Beyoncé appears on it doesn't make it any better. Upon a first listen of the lead single, “Adventure of a Lifetime”, one could be easily think Coldplay have gone down the psychedelic pop route, but it happens not to be the case (well, not completely). Their seventh (and potentially last) album “A Head Full of Dreams” is the poppiest album they've ever made, adding more colourful and textured sounds to an already catchy, pop rock sound. Add an all-star cast which includes Beyoncé, former Oasis frontman Noel Gallagher and US President Barack Obama, and you should get something of great blissful beauty, right? Well, yes and no, there are moments here that are just wonders to behold, with the euphoric and blissful “Adventure of a Lifetime” (arguably their best song since “Viva la Vida”, if not, “Fix You”) and the Tove Lo featured “Fun” among the best of them. However, an album is only as good as the sum of its parts and the quality of the songs, and on a whole, it falters... quite often it has to be said (no doubt in part to the fact that their last album, “Ghost Stories” was released last year, the shortest gap between Coldplay albums). “Kaleidoscope” and the hidden track on “Army of One”, “X Marks the Spot” sound like they add nothing to the album, and are complete filler. Chris Martin's lyricism is amongst the blandest he's ever written, and the production is far too polished in many places. However, the production on “Amazing Day” and suits the song very well, and is the closest to any of the old incarnations of Coldplay we get on this album. “Adventure of a Lifetime” might have led to people thinking this could be the best Coldplay record in a decade. Unfortunately, it could go down as the worst of their entire career. If they do call it quits at the end of their upcoming tour, then it'll feel like they've selled themselves short, and appear to be going out on a muted whimper. Overall, disappointing.

Album Highlights: “Hymn for the Weekend”, “Adventure of a Lifetime”, “Fun” and “Amazing Day”.

I suppose if you started as a 15 year old with this album, you might like it. if you've paid attention to this from their EP days, this feels like a cynical cash-in; an attempt to satisfy an album deal as quickly as possible. Chris Martin's mediocre and maudlin lyrics used to be forgiven early on because the music was so good--but he should have gotten better by now--and he hasn't.
