It is a breathtaking experience to watch this movie. J.K. Simmons is clearly the winner here, his constant on and off screen impact in this movie shows how amazing his acting skills are and how well this character was written. It speaks more on the character's point of view rather than the script which holds the movie till the end.

Whiplash is one of the most stressful and uncomfortable movies of all time. Many times I cringed out of anticipation of what will happen. J.K. Simmons gives a commanding performance as well as Miles Teller.

Very well shot, edited, acted and designed; with a fresh take on old ideas. The movie may have a very specific focus and be nothing earth-shattering on the intellectual side, but it's worth several Oscar nominations. The music is fantastic. See it on the big screen.

As for the controversy around the abusive teacher, I would say that it's not necessary to feel that the teacher is justified or unjustified, good or evil, effective or hindering, in order to enjoy the movie and find interesting food for thought in it. If a semi-vicious teacher who, in the real world, would overstep the bounds of ethics and even effective technique, is a flaw in the movie, then it's not a damning one.

Despite this, after a Best Director win, Chazelle has been tipped as a great and one of his films that demonstrates this perfectly is his 2014 breakthrough, Whiplash, the story of an ambitious young student under the tutorage of an abusive music instructor. Chazelle has crafted an exhilarating and detailed film, owing less to a La La Land-esque musical but rather to sports movies, like Rocky. Miles Teller stars as Andrew, a young and hugely ambitious drum protégé desperate to impress his notorious instructor, Terence Fletcher. J.K Simmons stars as Fletcher and is certainly the star of the film; his muscular physique and sharp tongue create a monster, yet one who remains human enough to remain terrifyingly believable. Slowly, we see the film turn into a game of cat and mouse as Andrew is relentless in his pursuit to impress Fletcher, who argues that tough love is the only way to breed musicians that make history. Whiplash is brutal when it needs to be, Tom Cross’ editing adding a sharp execution (often cutting to the central drum kit) to Chazelle’s attentive direction. The film is unforgiving in its pace, managing to turn even the most permissive drum solos into gripping dramatic set pieces. Even as the film descends into melodrama, plot-wise (literal car crashes begin to overtake the metaphorical), Whiplash never loses that golden forcefulness and intensity that makes it work so well. For a film about music, Justin Hurwitz provides a fitting score, his striking, bouncy music immersed within the jazz standards. The score feels like the film itself; brassy and pacy, yet somehow relaxed and perfectly measured at the same time.
Whiplash is a fine film; Chazelle’s aptitude for detailed and thoughtful direction is clear and, even when the story trails into the unbelievable, you can’t bring your eyes away. Simmons is stellar in his performance, his delicious brutality making him well deserving of his Oscar. Whilst La La Land shows Chazelle paying homage to the bygone movie musical, its predecessor is a very different film; nail-biting and uncompromising, Whiplash is a very accomplished piece of filmmaking.

Truth be told, "Whiplash" is one of the best movies that I've ever seen. This movie is not a musical. It's a psychological drama. J.K. Simmons made me angry, too. As time passed, I understood the characters more and more, and I got sucked into this movie. If sth bad happened to Teller, I would feel like it happenned to me throughout the movie. That's all because I understood his characters. This movie is an intense drama that made me wanna face Simmons and punch him in his face. His performance is Oscar worthy, and seemingly, he has been rewarded so many times for his performance as Mr. Fletcher. Teller is so intense. The performances are all like these charactera are real. If there was a weird thing going on in this movie, I would understand it, because this movie is so goddamb real. Bravo, Damien Chazelle... you satisfied me with this masterpiece. Thank you. You made me have a big smile after this movie finished with that perfect ending. Again, thank you. Expand

It's ok not to like a film, but you must have valid points. The film helps us as an audience see how to overcome our beasts. The swearing is one of the most special things about the film, as it evokes such harsh nature. J.K Simmons brings an absolutely incredible performance, along with Miles Teller who gives his greatest performance also. Whiplash is not only a threatening film, but one which helps me realise that films don't have to be fun. They just need to have quality. So, in conclusion, if you hate this film, that's fine. But don't hate it for no reason whatsoever. I know this review might polarise some of you, but before disliking, please take a good read :) Expand

For musicians or artists its like watching all the most extreme horror stories come to life on screen. It is such an uncomfortable film in all the right ways. The best explanation I can give is that Teller's character is surrounded by waves being sent out from every direction until they all crash down on him. From the individual characters, to the relationships they build. From the swinging jazz over the uncomfortable scenes to the rising tension in each dialogue. This movie captured me in a way no other has and it is an absolute masterpiece. Expand

Outstanding from front to back. And we're not even die-hard jazz fans.
Excellent performance from Miles Teller (Andrew) and J.K. Simmons (Terence Fletcher). Their individual roles couldn't exist with the complementarity of the other. This feature is so poetic, so filled with both fast-paced musical action and floating moments of eloquent silence.
The plot is kind of simple but is brought in a particular way which keeps us on our toes. The pace of events is a bit jerky especially during the last quarter of the movie but it paradoxically compiles the most precious gems of it.
No spoil but the last scene is an unavoidable masterpiece. I would say the success of 'Whiplash' especially reside in the way it managed to popularise very theoritical concepts and moves. Despite all that, some subplots as social relations and Andrew's dad presence should have been more investigated in my opinion. Even if not exploring them also makes Andrew's choices more touching and engaging.
Definitely deserves its 'Metacritic Must See' label.

Fantastic, brilliant, jaw dropping, there are so many words I could use to describe this amazing piece of cinema, and it wouldn’t even begin to describe how much I enjoyed this film.
Whiplash was released all the way back in 2014, but even watching it 6 year later, I can say that it is easily one of the greatest movies that I have watched of all time, and this is due to a number of reasons.
Whilst there are many movies that explore the concept of the obsessive artist, I have never seen a movie that explores such a concept in this way. We are provided with an insight into the life of Andrew Neiman, an arrogant drummer who becomes obsessed with the idea of becoming the greatest drummer of all time. The movie shows how much he is willing to sacrifice, as we see him push personal relationships and needs aside in pursuit of this unrealistic dream. Its sickening to see someone slowly loose touch with their own reality as they fall into a deep obsession with their dream, and I though it was handled brilliantly. However, what really makes this movie unique is Andrews relationship with the character Terence Fletcher, the abusive, ruthlessly harsh band conductor.
Not only does this character act as a representation of the dark reality of the professional music world, but also as a representation of just how far Andrew is willing to go to become the greatest drummer in the world. Time and time again, we see Fletcher verbally, and physically, abuse Andrew, threaten and gas light him and push his physical limits as a drummer beyond a reasonable amount. Yet, after all this, we see Andrew continue to come back to fletcher, because he believes that he is the key to becoming a world famous musician. Just as Fletcher highlights Andrews obsessive nature, Andrews reaction to Fletchers character outlines his harsh nature. These two characters complement each other really well, and their dynamic in this film was easily the best part of it. Over the duration of the film, we see Fletchers unhealthy, distorted view of music slowly rub off onto Andrew, until it reaches a point where it becomes harder and harder for the viewer to find differences between these two characters. These powerful, though provoking themes explored within the film are incredibly engaging and really enjoyable to watch. I would also like to mention that the cinematography of this film is outstanding. There wasn’t a single moment in the film where the cinematography fell shot, because every single shot is framed with such precision and intent, and it was amazing to see the camera work for this film. Quick cuts and intense pans and zooms are used to emulate the sporadic nature of the drum kit, and the film does an excellent job of having this instrument drive certain scenes of the film. Sequentially, the acting in this film is unbelievable. Whilst Miles Teller does a fantastic job of bringing a high level of practicality to his role with his drumming, it is J. K. Simmons who steals the show, providing a hyper realistic and intense acting performance.
Whiplash is a fantastic movie because of its ability to keep the viewer engaged. Every scene with Andrew and Fletcher is like watching a horror movie, but the viewer is always left wanting to see more of these two characters together. This film is such a fantastic piece of art that has the viewer emotionally invested within its story, and I would highly recommend this movie.

It’s about passion, perseverance and taking your dreams to extreme lengths. The characters in this movie are the main reason why you’ll want to watch this. Terrance Fletcher (played by J.K Simmons) is a psychopathic teacher who is manipulative and very interesting to watch.
My only small complaint is the pacing of the movie it starts off slow then speeds up a lot then goes slow again then speeds up a little bit. For a movie like this I believe they could have been a bit more consistent.
My favourite part of the movie is the final scene. I don’t want to spoil it, because it is by far in my opinion one of the best scenes that we have seen in movies this past decade. Something everyone should see.
