Whether you like Wendy will depend almost entirely on your continued tolerance for the baby-Malick stirrings of Zeitlin’s style: roving, evocative camerawork; the unpolished roughness of unknown child performers; treacly sentiment pouring from each horn blast of Romer’s score; or France’s storybook narration. At nearly two hours, that’s a lot of syrup to pour down your throat, and the unapologetic mawkishness of it all can rankle after a while, even if you’re attuned to the film’s wavelength. Wendy recognizably reflects Zeitlin’s vision; it’s less a follow-up to "Beasts" than a kind of echo of it. The mistakes the movie makes, and the ways it fails to fulfill its predecessor’s promise, make me want to say something critics rarely express: I wish that the studio had meddled a little bit more. Wendy hits all the feels as it dives into the themes of maintaining hope and the loss of innocence. A wonderful reimagining of a familiar tale with a ragtag cast that pulls everything together with perfection.

It’s been 8 years since Benh Zeitlin made his debut with the wonderfully accomplished Beasts of the Southern Wild in 2012. I loved his creative and uplifting approach to that film where he explored an epic story through the imagination of a child character and I enjoyed a lot about his follow-up Wendy, for the same reasons. Admittedly, there are some issues with the narrative on occasion but this is an interesting reimagining of the Peter Pan story that works very well under Zeitlin’s emotional and soaring technique. It may not be as fully realised as Beasts but Zeitlin is an undoubtedly talented director.… Expand

There was so much potential in this movie. I guess we shouldn't expect much when child actors are involved. But I had lowered my expectations. Next time get a better casting team.
