A cute and clever take on the zombie-genre. Hoult's narrative adds some laughs that helps the zombie lover in me get through it all. I view it less as a zombie film and more as a romantic comedy with a flesh-eating backdrop.

I watched about 40 minutes and just couldn't take any more of it. I'm thinking the target audience must be teenage girls who want to indulge with the fantasy that love conquers all, even the zombie apocalypse. The problem with that is thatI watched about 40 minutes and just couldn't take any more of it. I'm thinking the target audience must be teenage girls who want to indulge with the fantasy that love conquers all, even the zombie apocalypse. The problem with that is that the zombies here aren't actual zombies, not when they start more resembling the living than the dead, which makes the film seem like a fraud. Also, the "comedy" isn't particularly funny and the "romance" isn't especially romantic. Why there are still electric lights burning at the airport I don't know, since this is apparently some years after the apocalypse, but I'll take a wild guess and assume that no one wanted to bother coming up with an alternate source of illumination that might make some actual sense. OK, the bony CGI zombies are kind of interesting, but not interesting enough to keep me watching. Yawn. Fear the Walking Dead season one tops this by a mile. So does Quarantine, on a $12 mill budget. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I enjoyed this film more than I expected to. Its a zombie film but the characters are both zombie and human and I thought Nicholas Hoult did a good job as the main character, R. I particularly liked that you could hear his human thoughts through a mix of the ocassional narration and some laboured whispering he clearly struggles to express. As a viewer, I definitely felt emotionally concerned and attached to the two main characters, the boy (only referred to as 'R') and the girl (Julie).

Its not an all out gory violence fest, at least not at first and I liked that it has a romantic angle, even though it is pretty cheesy and its clearly intended primarily for a teenage market, I thought it was interesting - its quirky, definitely different and won't please those hoping for constant high paced action. Its actually, bizzarely enough somewhat poignant, dialogue wise, at times. I think you could say its a bit of an analogy, a very cheesy one I suppose but one never-the-less of that even if everything around you is going to what-not, you may be surprised by what is still out there (I kind of can't believe I just typed that but there you go!).

Oh and mind you, when there is action, the special effects aren't too bad either. The makeup certainly seemed pretty decent for one thing. I also particularly enjoyed the music played, including Missing You performed by John Waite and Hungry Heart written and performed by Bruce Springsteen. Yes, there's a definite comedy aspect to it in that regard!. Its ludicrous but in a kind of a cool way, I felt. I imagine this probably appeals more to ladies than guys, although not necessarily exclusively. In any case, I'm happy to recommend this film.

Really well-paced, great dark humour and very heartfelt zombie-romantic film.

The director totally nailed the balance of dark comedy, horror, and romantic. Chemistry between Nicholas Hoult and Teresa Palmer was romantically on point!

PS. You don't need to be necrophiliac before enjoying this film, just so you know

After a highly unusual zombie saves a still-living girl from an attack, the two form a relationship that sets in motion events that might transform the entire lifeless world. (6)

Here's a film that takes a dead-on-arrival plot (no pun intended) and turns it into something that is fresh for the uber-popular zombie genre. While the film gets off to a slow start and the acting can be *ahem* stiff at times, we as an audience are invested in this endearing and lovely relationship between the zombie, R, and his living girlfriend, Julie. We want to see them live happily together and survive in the odd, post-apocalyptic conditions that plague their world. I also can't help but dig the nice use of music in this film. Nice work! Expand
