Star cast, eminent director and good literary primary source. What could go wrong? And it's enough just to transfer the action of the film to modernity. And here's a kind of disaster movie from Spielberg. But there is no scale, Wells wrote War of the Worlds before the World Wars, he had no idea what it would look like. This movie begins to fall apart like a house of cards. Special effects are not surprising even by the standards of the early 2000s. There is no scale of what is happening. So it turns out that War of the Worlds cannot but show a catastrophe, not a fantastic show something due to primitiveness, not to surprise with scale. Also, the main character (who was well played by Tom Cruise in general) without a characteristic and the surrounding people sometimes behave inadequately. And the end of the film is as delusional and meaningless as the film itself. War of the Worlds is a bad disaster movie. As a Sci-Fi movie, it's not bad, but it's clearly not Spielberg's best work. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

Exciting alien invasion drama, Tom Cruise's acting was meh, but it had a brilliant atmosphere, aand lots of plot holes. The ending was a bit weird. Not in the good way. I give it a 5-6.

Film of a devastating slowness and with a fairly banal plot, but with the action scenes and special effects it is saved. An honorable mention is to be made to the tense parts that are masterfully rendered in this film.

No one in the 1953 version said anything like that (as I recall) and all it does is point out that with a million years of planning (apparently) none of the "vast intellects" of the aliens (as described in the 1938 Mercury Theatre radio version) ever considered the possibility of encountering biological hazards here on Earth. Which is really kind of amazing when you consider that mere humans have been thinking about it before they even launched anybody into space.

Well, of course, it's only a movie and apparently none of the "vast intellects" in charge of making this movie considered how the aliens might have accounted for biohazards and still fail in their invasion.

All in all, this is a fairly typical Tom Cruise movie full of non-stop action and lots of FX but little to stimulate the higher faculties of the brain. Personally, I prefer the 1953 version with Gene Barry. Better pacing. Better plot.

It turned however to be a frustratingly uneven film, with a good first half and a pretty lousy second half.

Starting with what's good, the film looks fabulous, the atmosphere that the cinematography and lighting evoked is just incredible and the special effects are without complaint too. John Williams can be relied upon to compose a good score and he does here, being both rousing and spooky. Spielberg does an impeccable job directing the first half of the film, giving a lot of the first half thrills, suspense and genuine scares.

Tom Cruise does a good job in the lead and Tim Robbins is eerily eccentric. As said, the first half has many great moments and is filled with unnerving suspense and scary chills. Truly imaginative details like the burning train, the birds/tripod scene and the river of the dead bodies burn in the memory for a long while after.

However, the human drama was not as transfixing as it should have been, being hurt by the dysfunctional family subplot being rammed down the throat with no subtlety at all with nothing relatable at all and especially by the kids.

Spielberg has demonstrated before that he is capable of directing great child performances, prime examples being Haley Joel Osment in 'AI' and Christian Bale in 'Empire of the Sun', but the performances of both Dakota Fanning and Justin Chatwin are incredibly irritating. Not sure which is more so, Fanning's constant screaming or brattiness or Chatwin made to act throughout the film but especially the second half like an indecisively written character who makes stupid decisions and acts rebellious in the most insufferable of ways. The dialogue is often insipid.

After a lot of promise in the first half, 'War of the Worlds' is let down significantly by the second half where the pace slackens (a notable example being that overlong scene in the basement) and the suspense dramatically wilts (such as when the aliens are introduced, and they are not menacing in the slightest) and is replaced by ridiculousness, frustrating character decisions and sentimentality. The Hollywood schmaltz kicks in and keeps assaulting the viewer at full throttle, while the ending is up there as one of film's most false, cloying and anti-climactic.

In conclusion, a frustratingly uneven film that starts off quite well and then completely falls apart. 5/10 Bethany Cox

The tripods are incredibly scary, but the aliens inside them are hilariously goofy.

The performances are all solid, but the characters are very annoying.

What pushes it above average for me it's the ending. I really like the ending. I know some hate it and think it's unsatisfying, but it's refreshingly hopeful and it makes me feel that if aliens were to attack, everything would be ok.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Good and preposterous at the same time. That can’t really be held against it tho, the speculative science and technology of alien invaders couldn’t be realistically depicted at the time the novel was written (not as if we can realistically predict it now either). Still, it’s a good movie and well acted. Expand

Movie was not upto the mark and there were many plot holes (When the attack begins, every piece of electronic equipment stops working. However, moments later when the Tripod rises from the earth, people are snapping pictures on digital cameras and one person is videotaping everything on a camcorder). I didn't expect this type of mistake from Spielberg. Well, leaving this plot hole aside there were other things also which were not upto the mark like storyline and emotions were seriously lacking. This movie could have been a blockbuster like Independence Day (1996) but that didn't happen.

I would also like to add the point that even after so much mistakes, you will enjoy this movie mainly due to pacing and alien attack story (which almost everyone likes).

If you want to watch Spielberg's work, then I will definitely not recommend this movie to you as it is not his good work but yes, you can watch this movie for entertainment.

Entertaining, but disappointing

In this film, directed by Steven Spielberg, Earth is attacked by aliens with giant mechanical tripods in a contemporary approach of the famous H.G. Wells sci-fi novel, and a remake of a homonym film by 1953. Has Tom Cruise in the lead role, Ray Ferrier, a father who seeks to put his daughter, Rachel (Dakota Fanning) in a safer place.

Although Steven Spielberg have used enough computer special effects and killed half of mankind, this film isn't only a human calamity, but the drama of a father trying to save his daughter from alien invasion, a theme who has been subject of several stories. In fact, most of them has been, directly or indirectly, influenced by the novel "War of the Worlds" ("Independence Day", just to quote one of them).

The tension follows all the film, where action and special effects scenes are mixed with suspense and expectation enlivened by scenes that remind us of the Holocaust or 9/11. The two main characters easily captivate the audience's sympathies and make us become more anxious and "clinging" to the film, which is always good. Tom Cruise managed to come out very well in his role, despite a certain ambiguity of his character, who only thinks about running away during the first half of the movie and spends the second half acting like the hero of "Mission Impossible", without we understand why exactly he changes his attitude. Another problem of this movie are the fairly obvious plot holes that we don't like to see in a Spielberg's film (I would even say that they aren't forgivable in a film directed by him).

For all this, this film leave some critics a bit disappointed, having just been nominated for Oscars in three technical categories (Sound Editing, Sound Mixing and Special Effects). Commercially, however, it was a success, largely due to the fame of Spielberg and Cruise, but also due to the special effects and the fact that is able to achieve its main goal: entertain who pays to see him.

War of the Worlds shows the struggles of a father and two children surviving in a world being taken over by aliens. Watching that first scene of the Tri-pods rising from the ground gives me goosebumps even now. Fantastic CGI that has aged extremely well make this film satisfying to watch, and enthralls you in it's immersive world. Accompanied by a stellar performance by lead actor Tom Cruise and supported by talented young actors, make for a believable and colorful film. A must watch for Sci-Fi fans. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. To put it in perspective, I like everyone else enjoyed 70-75% of this movie. Spielberg brings it all into this movie, the themes and imagery come with a purpose to frighten and disturb rather than thrill, making ingenious use of familiar 9/11 imagery along with clear references to the Holocaust and the war in Iraq. The references and themes are so chilling that its almost to the point its as if the movie is a post 9/11 propaganda film. Tom Cruise, who was excellent in Collateral also brings it in this film by delivering a very committed and tense performance as a seemingly failed father. Then comes the second act, the movie begins to stumble and fall leading up to a clear Dues Ex Machina conclusion that almost makes me wonder as if Mass Effect 3 took a page out of Spielberg's book to deliver a unsatisfying conclusion to an otherwise satisfying movie. The film tragically changes and almost with no regard for itself violates its carefully established tone and internal logic to become a typical and cliche summer action film where our hero valiantly goes one-on-one with an alien invader to eventually turn the tide in humanities favor. The transition is jarring almost to the point to where you feel disconnected from the story. It's also troubling that the guy who created Jaws and Jurassic Park also couldn't hold himself in check before misfiring and showing his badly designed and poorly CGI'd alien invaders. Still, War of the Worlds is well worth a view for fans and movie goers. Whereas, despite it's otherwise weak second half, it's an excellent film. Considering it was made in the wake of 9/11, its not hard to view the film as a form of post 9/11 or Iraqi war propaganda. Its almost brilliant when you think about it, America under attack by technologically advanced "sleeper cell terrorists" coming from within, hellbent on destroying America with extreme prejudice. The only thing that would make it more evident would be if Spielberg decided to put beards and turbans on the aliens while having them speak a strong middle eastern dialect. Expand

For me, this shows Steven Spielberg at peak Spielberg. Heartwarming and built around family with childlike wonder, the film also shows Spielberg's great ability to create thrills and scares along the way. Tom Cruise is great in the lead role and really does a great job as the deadbeat dad tasked with saving his kids who do not really like him too much. Dakota Fanning does very well as his daughter, though she does become annoying a few times. The special effects and creature design are incredible, while also demonstrating why everybody is so paranoid. The film also does a great job drawing parallels with historical occupations (French in Algeria, Britain in the United States), while capturing the paranoia of post-9/11 America all in one swoop. I actually demanded much more from my favorite director, Steven Spielberg - creator of E.T, Close Encounter of the Third Kind and Minority Report, to deliver another thought-provoking, visually striking sci-fi thriller rather than this somewhat flat, boring, tension-free summer blockbuster. I even fell asleep for the last 20 minutes of the film, which, i was told later by one of my friends, "explained" the sudden fall of these machines rising from the deep ground beneath Earth's surface. I don't know, to tell the truth, because after staying tuned for over the first hour, i don't care much about what happened in the end. I suppose a 6 would be rational, as sound editing, color blending and interesting description of the three-leg machines, to some extent, made up for the film's lack of good ideas to work on Expand

Despite, the movie is one of the best science fictions in recent memory, it is clever, tense and leaves at the edge of your seat. However, I am not used to seeing a Steven Spielberg film that is so hardcore and heartless, so I would consider this movie Spielberg's weakest. On the other hand, I would consider it a distinct achievement in movie history of Sci-Fi. It is recommended, other than some weak CGI, it is a wonderful popcorn B movie! Expand

Way too much Tom Cruise in this movie. They took a great story line and made it about Tom Cruise rather than about alien invasion. They didn't do justice to the wonderful HG Wells story

War of the Worlds only battles with viewers interest.
Based on the classic sci-fi novel; War of the Worlds is somewhat limited by design. Characters are left as shells, and the ongoing threat never is really addressed with any rhyme or reason.

It reminds me a lot of 'Independence Day', except with out even the pluses of saying it's special effects are (comparative to the time) very good or having a memorable, stirring speech. In fact, that's a problem of the whole film, not one god damn thing in it is memorable, just Tom Cruise and his constantly screaming daughter driving every where. I think the big problem was that setting it in the modern era removes any sort of tension at all. When all the alien just have big anti-everything shields that can't be hurt by squat, there's no sense of humanity fighting back, so it turns from "War" of the Worlds in to "Ants on poking at an exterminators shoe" of the Worlds. Bland, samey, dull, boring, lazy, cliche, and all other manor of adjectives. And the worst thing is, this means it'll be far longer until someone is allowed to actually make a GOOD adaptation at last. (Stick with the radio drama/rock opera). Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. That is the first one in my "black list" os worst movies ever.
I hate when a history force too much to give a good end without any reason.

The movie dont have a start, a middle and an end, have nothing. Every behavior from humans and aliens are so stupid. The script has so bizarre errors. Like someone recording a PEM with a cam, or Tom Cruise leting off the city in a car with ALL cars stoped in the streets, how?

When i saw the end, i just ask "why"? The perspect of view was amazing, but all the rest was disastrous.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. OK...team up Tom Cruise, Steven Spielberg, and one of the greater science fiction writers' best story...like the saying in "Crazy Like a Fox": "What could possibly happen?". As it turns out, not too much. Cruise running around like a maniac would not be too bad...IF it'd happened following the 'invasion'. However, it seems like that's the way the character normally acts. Dakota Fanning's claim-to-fame seems to be her ability to remember one line of dialog: "SHRIEK!". 'Sir' Spielberg places this film in the modern day, which might have worked. However, in this case, it didn't. In his re-imagining of the invasion, it turns out the aliens have been here all along (Spoiler...naw...). The so-called effects just seem too Michael Bay-ish, with the only item that I enjoyed being the 'harvesting' tripod. I will mention that the ending was great...it meant this tripe was finally over. Funnily enough, Spielberg managed to pull if off, especially filming an American adaptation. But that didn't bother me, because I was gripped more or less by the time the tripods arrived. There are quite a few unnerving moments which made my skin crawl. It was worth watching, because it felt quite real, especially how the characters were feeling. A thrilling ride - Tom Cruise should do more of this. Great how the Americans could have a shot at this. The special effects were mind-blowing.The beginning felt a little stretched out, but at least the pace was relaxed halfway through the film. Overall, a film definitely worth watching. Expand

Man is able to theorize, invent, build. It can create. The creation is quite another thing, is not yet within his reach, and perhaps never will be and maybe it's all well and good. "The War of the Worlds" has a deeper meaning in itself, rigid, introverted.

And 'the act of the mirror, I understand, the true ruler of the narrative, that's where you find the starting point to delve into a story far from simple you see, do not listen / emotionally strong, because for many verse in terms of asynchronous communication and achromatic visual one. Like Minority report this one made it, with a four star rating and a 73/100 on this website. In this movie the world really is invaded. Overall, this is a rather good film. Technically - simply stunning. Great visual effects, sound and cinematography make it a pleasure to watch. It is one of the rare blockbusters that are actually decent when it comes to the plot, also. Ironically enough, the screenplay is also its weakest point. I was especially annoyed with the ending and the "happy family" crap. The demise of the aliens also came a bit too suddenly, and Spielberg could have made the transition more subtle, more intense. Nonetheless, "War of the Worlds" is going to be definitely one of the many blockbusters of Spielberg's that is going to be remembered as a good, entertaining, and thrilling film. Expand

Its sole purpose is just to show a small town get blown to pieces in the first 20 minutes. Every other second of the movie is agonizing! Its not even a movie, its what the "nails on a chalk board" sound is to the visual sense. The actors all spend the whole time screaming at each other in a very melodramatic fashion. Or just screaming in general. I've never seen people scream so much before in my life. If a giant robot is trying to kill me, I'm not going to be like "DAD WHY ARE YOU UPSET ITS ONLY THE END OF THE WORLD!!!! DAD!!! DAD!!! DAD!!! AAAAAAH YOU'RE MAKING ME NERVOUS TRYING TO FLEE FOR YOUR LIFE!!!!!" The characters don't even have lines when they're not screaming or acting stupid. At one point, Tom Cruise's son begs him to let him go watch a battle between the US army and aliens, and Tom has to try and drag him away; to no success. That's the dumbest thing I've ever seen in a movie, and it was totally non-secateurs. No plot. No nothing. When the pretty visual effects stop momentarily, Tom Cruise resorts to throwing peanut butter and breaking the windows of his house to entertain us. I guess they ran out of budget after making all the terrible CGI. Expand

As horror films go, it's really horrifying. Unfortunately, I got up to greet the pizza-man, and when I got back a minute later, somehow all the aliens were mysteriously dying. We're told this was from bacteria of some sort, then shown a zoom-in beyond the level of DNA (much smaller than bacteria) to some indefinite specks. Don't try to think about this one. The whole movie just meandered lazily from one grotesque scene to another. Completely sadistic, really. I didn't see The Passion, but I imagine it's sort of the same thing. This movie only makes sense in the context of 'New World Order' conspiracy theories about Speilberg -- like, if 'they' decide that a billion people have to die to preserve the world's resources, let's just stage a temporary 'alien invasion,' where a ton of people will be helplessly killed, and then the killing will miraculously stop without anyone doing anything. (Probably why we see only the plight of a do-nothing citizen, rather than an actual story a-la ID4.) This sort of speculation is necessary for entertainment because the movie gives you nothing else to think about. No plot, no drama, no honor in the actions of the characters, no imagination. I didn't see it at the theater, only on someone's enormous plasma TV, but the visual effects were underwhelming -- nothing we haven't seen many times before. Many scenes are interrupted in the height of suspense by a fade to silent black that has no purpose except as a future commercial break. Lots of loud noises to keep you and your neighbors awake, though. That earns one point. Expand

I was definitely on the edge of my seat throughout most of the film. However, this movie is hampered by the minor detail that the entire premise makes absolutely no sense. Morgan Freeman's opening narration tells us that the aliens have grown envious, watching humanity. But then it turns out that they buried "tripods" millions of year ago, before humans were even here. Then for some reason the aliens waited for a few million years, until our civilization thrived, and then came to blow us up. That's quite a lot of foresight...I wonder if they bury their spaceships on every planet, just in case they need them millions of years later? Most families are like that. The girl got annoying, and I got a little monotonously lethargic about the bickering, and the van was unrealistic, how it could survive all of that calamity but be hijacked. I was also disappointed in the Martians; nothing like Wells described. Pendragon's version meets that dead-on. Those are the only downsides, and all the rest is accurate, even, yes, folks, the ending. Even the book ended it that abruptly, in the spanse of a meer chapter. I however do think it would be neat if they switched: Pendragon would have Spielberg's budget, to do a completely FAITHFUL and REALISTIC retelling of the novel, and Paramount would do a low-budget modernized tale. But, with what is had, War of the Worlds is one of those films that comes to mind as you're falling asleep exhausted (comparing to how the characters must have felt, stumbling right back into danger). Overly exaggerated acting (if you could call it that). This was just one of those movies that revolved around special affects, and used acting to fill the gaps. Although the effects really were neat, they did not carry the film.

Good special effects, but once again Tom Cruise plays a character with the depth of personality of a potato. Whether this movie is about humanity's best or worst tendencies under stress, it is painful to contemplate.

The movie itself is ok, however it had some "problems" with it that I found hurt the movie quite badly. First off, you know how you get those movies such as this one where someone (usually aliens) is trying to kick the human races ass, and it happens - so you sit through it for maybe half or even two thirds of the film, then you get the payoff of the satisfaction of watching us "get our own back"? Well, this is one of those rare movies where you never get this payoff. (it's a bit like the Animatrix Episode "The 2nd Renaissance" or even the Matrix Trilogy itself) What you're treated to is the human race having it's ass handed to it for 90 minutes then the attackers basically just die, at the hands of a virus (I think it was the common cold... :|). The only remotely satisfying bit of them taking any flack is near the end when one is already half dead and the army take it out with rocket launchers. The other problem is that the film seems to lose it's way about half way through, with a pretty pointless bit involiving a nutter hiding in his basement, though this part does have some quite well executed suspense momemts. As always with Spielberg you can expect awesome special effects and all that, and you will probably feel some emotions, probably anger because a lot of people do get killed and not much happens to the attackers. One thing I did like though was the attitude of the son in the movie, his desire to follow the army into the heat to try and get some sort of vengeance pretty much summed up my feelings while watching the movie, like I said though, you never really get this. Overall a decent movie, probably one I might buy on DVD but it could have been a lot better in my opinion. Expand

All that leaps off the kneejerk critical page to me - a lot more than this irritating brainless movie per se can muster anyway - are comments regarding 'top-notch special effects'. I just watched it on DVD. All I can say is thank God I did not pay to see this in the theater. It was one of the most disappointing efforts of the once great Mr. Spielberg. It was one of the most disappointing efforts of the once great Mr. Spielberg. Steven have you thought about retirement? Nothing made sense. It confirmed that Tom Cruise can't act. As for the story it was comical. You don't run toward the danger you run away from it. Every scene was stolen from a previous movie. Awful. Expand

Very intense! I enjoyed every minute of it. The 0 scores are just plain ridiculous. Even if you don't like the the original HG Wells story, you have to give it props for the mind blowing special effects.

I have just finished watching this movie for the second time and can say in all honesty that Speilberg's update of the classic War Of The Worlds tale is a complete disappointment. This picture could have been one of the best science I have just finished watching this movie for the second time and can say in all honesty that Speilberg's update of the classic War Of The Worlds tale is a complete disappointment. This picture could have been one of the best science fiction epics in recent years, however its success was inevitably going to be mared by the lack of scope and imagination implemented by those producing it. The trailer made the film look nothing short of breathtaking, hinting and teasing audiences with samples of the Spielberg and Cruise creativity madjesty that we've seen before in the likes of Minority Report. Unfortunately, this is exactly what the movie itself demonstrates; pure speculation. At the best of times the film is prolonged, slow and uninspired, and whenever the amazing special effects that the film makers have created are shown, they are again limited to a smattering of brief action sequences that you hope will accure countless times throughout the course of the picture. however this is not to be. Overall War of the Worlds is an underdeveloped experience that could have been so much more. I personally am a huge fan of Tom Cruise and feel incredibly disappointed to see him placed in role where he can cannot fully express his true talent and form as his character is hardly ever given anything demanding to do besides runaway and act dumb. This movie is a victim of its own limitations and if more time was spent illustrating epic encounters between the invaders and us humans instead of focusing on a dead end plotline about a single family, this film could have ultimately been much improved. Incomprehensible dialogue, poor scripting and equally poor, dark, under imaginative, photography. Independence Day might have been cheesy but it shows how alien invasion films should be done. Usual dysfunctional family and brattish kids. When will Hollywood move on and stop repeatedly depicting this tired cliche? The real action was in how the USA would respond at a military political level to such an invasion, not in running around the streets or countryside screaming at each other while irrationally walking back into danger as soon as you have escaped it. Independance Day recognised that. War of the Worlds did not. Which made the most money for their backers? Expand

This movie is what is wrong with movies. You find a big name director, a big name actor, and then people will actually think it's a good movie. This movie had so much potential and just did not deliver. The holes in the plot were large and frequent. The main charecters were annoying and at times I wanted them to die. The special effects were good but could not rescue this flop.
