A beautiful and romantic tale. Great characters. It was so refreshing to have a elderly hero from a modest station express so much that is wonderful about the human experience. Despite the uplifting vibe, the presence of loss and longing saved the movie from the mediocrity of typical Disney factory drivel. The movie was very funny. The 3D certainly enhanced the experience and was seldom distracting. Despite the PG rating I found it to be appropriate for my 3 year old, who did get a little bored due to the relaxed pacing of the film and a mild cold. After 3 unbelievable home runs with Ratatoille, Wall-E and now UP, I am a little disappointed that Pixar will return next year with Toy Story 3. These are some of the greatest family films made. Every new and original story is a treasure. Expand

These characters are all well drawn out and believeable, and the plot is absolutely amazing in its ability to infuse comedy with tragedy. While I can admit that there are aspects of the film that would seem impossible (a floating house, talking dogs) the film makes everything seem so incredibly real. It is definitely a film that children and adults alike can enjoy. A sensationally heartfelt, often uplifting film, it seems almost impossible that anyone can't love "Up." Expand

The scenes with her - young and then old - in the prologue are (with the possible exception of one or two sequences in WALL-E) the best thing Pixar has ever done. It gives us the "reasons" for character traits early, as opposed to making them the "lesson" at the end. And it is unique in that it doesn't overexplain the problems of the child, Russell. On suspects that his father is the man trying to tear down Carl's house, but we never really know. Pixar has wisely steered its efforts toward emotional maturity; its visual luxuries are desensitizing and oddly static as compared to the best traditional animation. Pristine color is status quo, but good storytelling is still work. Comparing this movie's beginning to its middle is strong evidence of this. Expand

But when a 9-year old obnoxious fellow swings on for the ride, Mr. Federickson has to learn to deal with him after a conflict arises once landing in South America. Up is definitely a film for the entire family to feel excited about. The intial first 10 minutes are very heartwarming, but loses that warmth a little once the adventure begins, soon feeling like a shorter, much toned down adventure once it ends. Without a doubt Pixar delivers quality animation once again, but the feeling is different once the end credits, the same I saw in Cars and Monster's Inc. But definitely another masterpiece for 2009. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A Thirst for Adventure
UP is able to create a story that is so riveting and enthralling, you hardly pay attention to the fact that it is an animated adventure. It starts with a miniature story all in its own, of a boy and girl who fall in love and live together happily, then the woman passes away, and his second, more geriatric adventure begins.
Hate the villains, love the heroes. That is the goal of all movies when it comes to creation of antagonists and protagonists is it not? Up manages to create characters that take form into real people. Their development adds to the peril of the movie by giving a tie to the characters. During most of the movie, a soft background music hums away, gently, hardly loud enough to notice. Without this music however, the story would be lacking a certain quaint feel. Soft and whimsical during the highs, low and menacing during the lows, this movie seems to have all the music exactly where it needs to be. In Pixar fashion, UP is a superbly animated film, unparalleled by any other “cartoons” of its time. UP is definitely in my recommended movies list. No matter how old, or young, all are welcome in this story of heroism and adventure.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I imagine that people must have been skeptical when they saw the trailer for this. An old man who flies off in a house attached to balloons with a kid who got on by accident and meets a talking dog and a weird bird? Must have been a hard idea to pitch. But people-this is Pixar. The movie is a touching and tear inducing masterpiece with a beginning that will break your heart no matter how tough you claim to be. There are a few bothersome things (like how can Muntz be still alive now if he was like, 40 when Carl was 8? ). But if you get past that, you'll love it. It might be a bit deep for small kids, but like most Pixar films, adults will be entertained a lot more than they might expect. Expand

Now, sure, it's definetely one of Pixar's best movies, but it doesn't reach the same level of storytelling brilliance like The Incredibles, Wall-E, Ratatouille or Monsters, Inc (also from Pete Docter, the director of this movie) but it is still a great film.

The main problem with UP is the sudden tonal shift after the opening. I LOVE the opening, like most people. I think it's brilliantly told and with the brilliant score by Michael Giacchino, and it's one of my favorite sequences in film animation, but after that, the tone shifted almost entirely.

What I'm referring to is that the opening feels like a mature, art-house like story, but after that intro it just turns into your typical family friendly comedy adventure film. It almost feels like the opening was written and directed by someone else. I've said the word "opening" a lot now, but okay, let's move on. What about the rest of the movie? Well, the movie does have heart. It still tries to avoid "talking down to its audience" and presents a well told story with cute underlying messages. The movie wastes time at points introducing unexpected subplots, because, I guess the writers thought that they needed a threat/villain. Granted, I was never bored, the movie is still fun to watch and I was invested to see Carl accomplishing what he promised.

The characters are a mixed bag. I love Carl and his development, his changes, his personality, all feel justified. Russell was annoying at first and he made some really dumb choices for no reason, but I guess that he was okay, he isn't a terrible character, and I guess that they did a good job in representing a naïve, immature child without being unwatchable. Charles Muntz was...Alright I guess. I mean his actions do make sense considering his motivations. The score by Michael Giacchino is brilliant, the animation is still impressive, the cinematography and shot composition are still pretty good. I mean it does have a lot of redeeming qualities, despite the sudden change in tone after the opening ends.

Overall, UP is an entertaining family film with a lot of heart and effort put into it, with a well told story with mature underlying themes, though it could've been a more emotional, art-house like story. That opening promised so much.

UP" movie is romantic and adventurous movie. The characters in this movie are Carl Fredrickson, Ellie, Russel, Kevin, Dug, Charles Muds. Fredrickson plays main role where he is introvert, shy, kind, personality
Ellie is more talkative and expressive
Russel belongs to social model, he was very funny and helpful. There ar so many learning outcomes in this movie, some of them that I recognized are, 1. Effective utilization of resources: (a)Fredrickson utilizes chocolate very well in the right time even he don't eat chocolates
(b) Dug uses that cap kind of thing to caught the dog when it was in danger
(c) Fredrickson uses window curtains as wings that also helpful for flight
(d) Russel when he goes for helping Kevin, he uses air blower that helpful for accelerating speed in required direction. 2. Here I also noticed something like unutilization of resources
(a) When the floating house is at high altitude with no movement, he cuts some strings of ballon to make floating house moves towards downwards
(b) When the floating house can't able to move, he throws down all the belongings in his house to reduce the weight of the house

3. Fredrickson's skills were amazing that he just uses huge number of ballons for flight, magnetic compass for showing direction and controller for turning. 4. Fredrickson was so emotional towards his wife, even just photo frame of his wife falls he can't see it. Though he was so much emotional, when he was helping kevin he didn't so much regret about it and then he replies it's just house, so any man can change with respect to circumstances that he faces in life. 4. Dug considers Fredrickson as his master, because every one needs to have a teacher to guide and goals to reach to make our lives beautiful. 5. In Charles Mudds character, even he may be correct in his perspective, he should analyze what would be done to achieve it having some values and ethics

6. Every one is unique in nature, behavior. But we should try to be complulsive so that with respect to the situation we have to face it in effective manner

7. Also, at the climax, they didn't have a plan how to save Kevin, but also they managed to save Kevin that is only because of their commitment

8. After watching this movie, I feel like writing diary with small dreams, adventures, endeavors.

One of the best opening of all time, the montage can make everyone tear up, with the soundtrack from the one and only Michael Giacchino, Up (2009) may be Pixar best works. The story is heart-warming, touching, compelling.

Though Miyazaki is on a whole different level of fantasy, this film felt like one of his films-which is a great thing. I hold WALL-E to be Pixar's best film, and the best thing Disney has ever done. I will not compare it to Up. Up does not have a solid story, nor does anything truly grab you...but it has a spirit to it. That spirit, or atmosphere, it beautiful. This is a pure fantasy film with some heart. Nothing deep, but everything enjoyable. Parts are sad, but not overbearingly. Other Pixar films are sadder. I loved this film. The first 15 minutes are very touching, even made me teary (I see my future before me). But this movie's ability to conjure real emotion stops there, with characters and story that are thenceforth somewhat flat. And while I love the weirdness and creativity displayed by many other animated films (Spirited Away, etc.), here the strangeness just rarely seems to fit right. (SPOILER ALERT) So many aspects felt uncomfortable and jarring, such as the old man running around for half the movie tethered to a house. The dogs are often funny (highlight of the film), but (SPOILER ALERT) flying planes?!? And the old guy gets random bouts of superhuman strength, speed, and flexibility (intentional, perhaps, but jarring). These random outcrops of weirdness never fit and are distracting, which I think is made worse by the art style that doesn't gel the realistic and the cartoony quite right. Close, but no cigar. Expand

It was true with "Wall-E", which nonetheless still sustained itself after its brilliant opening and remains the company's best film. And it's true with "Up", which contains a charming and surprising five minute scene near the beginning of the film that encapsulates the early love affair between a crotchety old man (Ed Asner) and the adventurous girl he marries and adores so well it effectively serves to anchor the rest of the movie. Good thing, because that remaining hour or so of screen time is not that interesting in itself. It reminds me of that famous quote about history, that it's just one damn thing after another. Despite that, I still liked this film a great deal. That opening put me on its side, and on the side of its characters, and I never tired enough of the generic action to lose my affection and interest in them. "Wall-E" is a work of art; "Up" is a charming and enjoyable way to spend a couple of hours. Expand

Pixar manages to evoke emotion through visuals as well, if not better, than any collection of filmmakers in big cinema. Their movies exhale the last, and perhaps purest, strains of magic from the ostensible Magic Factory that is the Disney monster. Up creates a few such moments that manage to carry it. But in between the movie pinballs around a startling series of miscalculations and just plain stupid dialogue. The Wall Street Journal review seems to catch the problem: the movie seems caught in storyboard form. Nevertheless, because the worthwhile portions are Pixar visuals and Pixar moments, Up remains a really good movie. Those of us who hold WALL-E and Ratatouille in such high esteem have to feel some regret knowing what could have been. Expand

As with its predecessors, the animation is great and the story is amusing and rich in sentiment but what makes Up stand out above the rest is the combination of unusual characters, odd story and superb Oscar winning score. With the exception of The Incredibles, Pixar have traditionally stayed away from humans as central characters. However, in Up the main characters are Mr. Fredricksen, a lonely, grumpy old man and Russell, a plump young explorer scout. An unlikely pair who are unintentionally thrown together as Mr. Fredricksen transports his house to South America using helium filled balloons to escape moving from his home. There they meet a group of talking dogs, an endangered bird and Mr. Fredricksen's childhood hero as the adventure and fun continues.

As plots go it is one of the most bizarre yet from Pixar but it's a fun journey and the writers actually cover the pretty serious themes of ageing and missed opportunities, loneliness and friendship along the way. The montage at the beginning of the film displaying the life Mr. Fredricksen shared with his wife, from their childhood to her death, is beautifully made and, supported by the superb score, is an incredibly emotive piece of film making.

If you are looking for an enjoyable, funny film for the family then you can not do much better than Up.
