Most of them are disingenuous, without proper elaboration on this work. This is not your average feature film, go to cinema with a girlfriend or mate sort of movie, it's not even for the late night TV program. This is an experimental film, a video project with lots of reality TV shots, documentary bits, theatrical choreographed performance, composed sequences of (choreographed) steps and moves, strange scene settings and designs, and most importantly, almost entire cast are "naturchiks" - non-professional and/or one-time actors/performers.
Unexpectedly American reviewers did not pan this project with sneer and low ratings, that is, until New York Post, veritas et virtus et scientia bastion, treated it with "tedious and pretentious" :-)

But to label this film empty and complain that 'nothing is happening' is totally false. Glazer uses silence, repetition, and simplicity throughout the film to pare back an elaborate, special effects-heavy concept to a sparse, cohesive story focusing on an alien perspective of the human world. Glazer manages to conjure his own style, melding a naturalistic documentary approach to the horror/sci-fi mastery of Kubrick classics emphasising absorbing imagery and ethereal soundscapes. A mesmerising lead performance from Scarlett here.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is a sci-fi thriller film which features themes including desire, deformities, disguise and seduction. The film starts with a quite futuristic and spooky, disorientating scene, whereby we're looking at something from very, very close up and only slowly does the camera pan back to allow us to realise what we're seeing. There is a heavy presence of edgy sounding, screechy musical pieces, a bit like the well known classical score in Psycho. I found myself feeling quite intrigued by the main character, known, or regarded, only as 'The Female'. I felt it seemed quite claustrophobic, there was something really quite unsettling about it from early on, which was mostly coming across via said edgy musical pieces, which were mostly more along the lines of incidental music, rather than actual song tracks.

As well as edgy, its quite mysterious, both dark in terms of the lighting and environment and also in terms of the themes and plot itself. Some scenes came across to me like some kind of peculiar dream sequence. I should perhaps state that this film is directed by Jonathan Glazer, perhaps more well known for his other films including Sexy Beast and Birth, which are cult classics (maybe less so Birth, but certainly Sexy Beast). Suffice to say, there is quite an art house feel to the film and I found myself feeling somehow frustrated by the lack of constant dialogue. You could say this is a bit of a 'Marmite' film, in as much as you might really enjoy its edginess, the fact the plot is so slow to build (the plot pace is very slow) and so on, or it may really frustrate you. I thought it did quite well at making me wonder what the back story was to said main/lead female character, wondering what may happen next and what we might or might not discover. I certainly thought it did well at creating a mysterious and spooky feel and it seemed somewhat original, perhaps not so in terms of the type of film it was but in terms of some aspects of the plot and how we're shown things. It is a bit 'arty' but I wouldn't say its not without merit - its definitely different, thats for sure. If I had to criticise it, I'd say there wasn't quite enough of a general direction clearly put across and that if I hadn't read the main plot synopsis prior to watching it, I'd likely feel significantly more at a loss as to what its all about. If I had to compare it, I'd say think of the films of David Lynch and the like.

Its one of those films which leaves you wondering how am I supposed to interpret this? I wouldn't say there's no pretention present, there is but there is definitely something intriguing about it which kept me watchinhg. I feel that some aspects, certainly the musical score (or incidental pieces played, whatever the correct term is) were very well picked out and certainly helped to add to a very unsettling atmosphere, which some may quite appreciate and enjoy and which might spook out other people, that all depends on your personal taste of course.

Content wise, the film features quite a lot of nudity at different times, including full frontal male nudity and sex scenes. There is violence, although its not especially graphic or gory, being mostly mild to moderate with a bit of blood shown but otherwise nothing too excessive, which may surprise you (it did me). There also isn't a great deal of very strong language present but the film has a quite spooky and unsettling feel throughout and so, due to this, it could be deemed as somewhat frightening and disturbing for some people. Rather than scary as such, I'd say its definitely unsettling, in a kind of a spine chilling sense. The film has been given a 15 rating due to said content.

I think, hesitatingly, yes I would recommend this film but with the caveat that if you don't like being kept literally in the dark or being confused by things, then its likely not for you. If, however, your somewhat open minded and like artsy, mysterious films with intrigue, then you may find this quite good and certainly interesting. I suppose I'll go with the undecided option, as it really depends on your personal taste in films, whether you'd like this or not, so I'll leave it to you to decide.

It stars Scarlett Johansson as an alluring but deadly creature of some kind. She roams around dull sections of urban Scotland in a plain van, picking up solitary men and doing something very strange to them. Around halfway thru, things change, and it becomes an interesting exploration indeed. The dialogue is very sparse, and the soundtrack is dominated by Mica Levi's dark score. There is some fine cinematography of Scottish winter landscapes towards the end. Expand

Personally, I generally hate slow paced, indulgent movies. I would hate this one too normally. Scenes drag out with almost nothing happening but literally every scene also is so beautifully done it kept me engrossed. I was so fascinated by what the hell was happening that I stuck it out. The ending was eery and somehow satisfying to me. And some of the characters were really cool. But slooowwww pacing throughout. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I kept seeing this on lists of the "best Netflix movie" you haven't seen or best Sci fi everyone should see OR even "not great, but visually stunning," etc. So today, I decide to finally watch it. What a mistake.

Here's my synopsis - long, unnecessarily long shots of, mainly, Scarlett's character staring at things followed by unsuspecting men in Scotland getting metaphysically or metaphorically (can't decide yet) asorpbed into a liquid nothingness. Could you at least give us a motive for the lead, or do you just prefer to channel the wayyy overrated director Terrence Mallick? As for, "not the best" movie but visually stunning - go check out The Fall by Tarsem Singh instead. Hey, Jonathan Glazer - how about you go back to directing music videos & we'll call it (almost) even?

For the record, I'm writing this (FIRST Metacritic review @ the 1 hr & 11 min mark (on pause) DEBATING whether I should continue or not. Things is, I NEVER quit a movie! For if (I think) it's bad, I want to know how much worse it can get OR to see if it will actually redeem itself at some point. Honestly, I just want to stab my eyes out...

All of these film aspects are executed in the most masterful and subdued manner. It is a modern fable of discovery and tells the story with little exposition, only imagery. This is an instant critical classic that explores humanity, love, femininity, identity, compassion and has a lot more subtext. The most Kubrickian film ever made, without being directed by the legend himself. It sways from immensely creepy, to powerfully brutal, to beautifully introspective with great ease and care. It's an *artsy* movie with a lot of visual storytelling and metaphors. Play the MLG sound effects. I went into this movie since ScarJo is my favorite actress of all time somewhat blind. I did not know she'd be nude in it, that came as a pleasant bonus surprise. I came out the other side disturbed but intrigued. Under the Skin is the type of movie that when you're finished you don't really know what you just watched and you don't really start appreciating the movie once you read up and watch theories, explanations and analyses. And sleeping on the movie for a while, I really do like it. It has some issues, nothing too major, but what it does right it does extremely well. A big part of the movie is the fear of the unknown and the movie **** nails that. You will see disturbing stuff you've hopefully never seen before accompanied by some of the most bone-chilling and unsettling music I've ever heard, serious props to the composer. This movie has the most terrifying jump scare I've ever seen, I am not kidding. I had to take a pause from watching the movie. And once again after 'Her' (my fav movie of all time), ScarJo wants to know what it means to be a human and the movie tackles that topic very well too. Those scenes with the men in the street are however the least engaging and can drag the pacing down varying degrees (I'm especially thinking of a scene with ScarJo walking around a telephone booth). ScarJo is great throughout the movie and also great is Adam Pearson, what a guy. Under the Skin is interesting and well made, there is no denying in that and the storytelling is there, you just have to think to take part in it. The movie won't throw anything into your face except disturbing terror that... gets under your skin hehe Expand

Not because people were excited for another deep, thoughtful sci-fi movie or anything like that, but because Scarlett Johansson was going to be naked. When it finally came out I saw that it got good reviews, but nobody really talked about it after that. So I assumed that everybody masturbated then moved on with their lives and that I wouldn't be missing anything by skipping it. It wasn't until a few years later that someone I met online recommended it to me and I decided that I might as well check it out at some point. I have ended up glad that they convinced me to look past my misconceptions and give it a shot.

The premise of an alien seductress leading men to their deaths with the promise of sex sounds like it should be the basis for a movie where the sole appeal is in the nudity. Not something as dark and haunting as this. Under the Skin has a B-movie setup, but ended up with art house appeal. The cinematography is gorgeous. Watching Johansson drive around in a van and do almost nothing is way more entertaining than it should be. Not just because of how great Jonathan Glazer and Daniel Landin were able to make the mundane look, but also because of Johansson herself. Her stare that is both empty, but full of curiosity is mesmerizing. You really want to get inside of her character's head just as much as all these men want to get inside her pants.

It's a very vague movie. Perhaps intentionally so that viewers may be able to draw their own conclusions as to what it's about. Loneliness from a true outsider's perspective? Trying to find your place in a cold world? A celebration of individuality? A critique of men's harassment and objectification of beautiful women? Even something as simple as real beauty being on the inside? I couldn't quite say. All I know is that it's a movie that is able to overcome most of the boredom one would typically find in something this slow-paced thanks to a wonderful performance from it's lead actress and that I enjoyed it very much.

Under The Skin

Expressing emotions and creating tension and urgency on the screen despite of using word is a sign of excellence in both writing and directing field. Under The Skin is a character-driven movie that is equally smart and soft to its core contradict to its hard raw brutal physique. Jonathan Glazer aces in projecting the on-paper words to the screen and brings out the character alive and pumping. Scarlett Johansson justifies her role and works hard on her character that itself remains mystery till the last frame. Under The Skin is a slow pill that unfolds in each phase and twists its way out as the plot thickens and the character ages on the screen.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I would like to start by saying i am a fan of films that are "different". I don't need a million gunshots or explosions to entertain me. I am not set on good guy vs bad guy and good guy winning. I like thought provoking films; i enjoy them much more than the soul sucking films that are manufactured on a daily basis. So i was intrigued by this one. The trailer was dark and seemed full of suspense. The critics had made bold comparisons with Stanley Kubrick, which in itself is a massive compliment. And as someone who lives in Scotland it had a little sentiment to it. But for me it was dull. Every time i thought it was going to pick up the pace, it decelerated. It was so slow it may as well have been going backwards. There are far too many scenes that are prolonged. I am fully aware of its intention to focus on aesthetically driven scenes. But 5/6 seconds is enough to appreciate it, not 10/15 seconds. At some points i thought the reel had maybe stuck and was expecting a CineWorld employee to come pacing round the corner to explain that there was something wrong. It just pauses at points that don't need that much attention. I am also aware of the symbolic nature the film carries. It is clearly a film you need to look further to understand it in more depth. That is fine; i welcome that, but the problem is that it does this without conviction. I don't need to see the masses of drunkards who swarm Sauchiehall Street 20 times. What is the purpose? To let us know that we, as people, blindly walk through life intoxicated not appreciating the finer things in life? That Under the skin we are empty? I assume that is a candidate for its meaning.

Scarlett Johansson doesn't have a lot to do in this film; basically make small talk and get naked, all the while with a plain face. And considering how ridiculous the Scottish actors are made to look, maybe she is due some credit for maintaining that straight face. There are a few things that bug me however; like she can walk down your average staircase, but panics with a spiral staircase. There is a definite point to this film, but with the layout, with there being no real culmination, no real explanation, it leaves you feeling you have been robbed of a film that could have been more. Could have told a better story. And for any Americans who watch, not all Scottish people talk like that, or wear horrible purple shirts, unnecessarily tucking them into our over elevated jeans. We don't all support Hibs and when a van is parked not all of us will gang up and try to break into the van. So feel free to visit. It is a nice place after all. Although the film had some stunning scenes and promotes Scotland visually, it doesn't exactly put the people in a great light. I wanted to enjoy this film, but i couldn't. I wanted to agree with comparisons with Kubrick, but i certainly won't. You can throw arguments of it was beautifully crafted or had symbolic serenity, but at the end of the day it is slow, uneventful and lacked culmination.

With very little dialogue, long and seemingly empty shots, as well as slow movement and pace, 'Under The Skin' is definitely not for everyone. But, when given enough attention and focus, it is very rewarding. The most unsettling part of the entire project is its documentary style of filming. The camera use, lighting and cinematography makes it seem extremely realistic and grounded in the imperfect reality of rural Scotland. Shopping centres look like real places, unpolished and ordinary, and so Scarlett Johansson's luring of male victims seems all the more unnerving. An interpretive film, with creepy and emotionally distressing moments, it is definitely worth a watch. If you're a fan of subjective meaning and ambiguity, this may be something you will enjoy. It is definitely not for everyone, however, and it's no surprise that it didn't make huge profits at the box office. Expand

There where at least some interesting concepts in this film but it felt extremely cheap and without focus. Really, if felt like someone just followed Scarlett Johansson around and filmed her as she **** about in Scotland for a bit, only with the caveat that no-one would recognise her. The vast majority of the film has no dialogue, and there are way to many lingering shots where nothing happens except Scarlett stares at a wall, out of the window, at the ocean etc. for sometimes up to a minute or more. Yes, there is an ending that will explain at least some of what happened, but there's far too much left unexplained in an attempt to maintain mystery.

The only positive I can say about this film if I'm brutally honest, is kudos to the director for convincing Scarlett Johansson to give us three long scenes of full frontal nudity, including one that actually systematically pans around her body as she clenches in the nude. For any red-blooded heterosexual men, that scene will be reason alone to own this on DVD, but I can save you the trouble now and tell you 16 minutes, 59 minutes, and 1h 17mins. Those are the times for her nude scenes... fast forward through everything else.

The lady from the white van.

First of all, this is not an entertaining film, but an alien theme on a fictional plot like how they would come live among us. Before that, they need to look like us, so they steal human skins and that's what this film is about. Most of the film was in a van driving around in the Scottland. An alien disguised as a human, looking for the single men in the uncrowded places to seduce and steal their skins. But one day after got curious about being a human being, her routine work gets affected seriously and so what happens to her after is told in the remaining film.

It's certainly not the film I was looking for. That's the reason I did not watch it when it got out. But I kind of liked it, it was not as boring as the others advised me. Usually films are for pleasure and timepass and this film did not have those qualities. Hence it financially failed. Surely some people would enjoy it, particularly the critics praised it which is unusual.

From the director of 'Birth', Scarlett Johansson in the lead and she was the only good thing in it. The story was a little complicated, so not everybody going the get it, not at the first glance, but if you do, you will enjoy it. The locations were awesome. Watching it on the cold stormy day brought me that original Scottish atmosphere here. I should have rated it better, but no regret for what I gave for it. Its not a suggestible kind, though worth a watch if you're fed up with the regular commercial films.

Glad filmmakers are starting to "get it", as the ADD chatter and rapid TV editing drives me crazy, as does, of course, watching the news!! 1 or 0--on that storyline, which made the whole film a bit incoherent, which is unfortunate, because would've been a GREAT film, otherwise... Pretty much nothing happens in this movie, and there is very little dialogue. I am baffled by the good ratings. It seemed like more of an art film than a science fiction film.

I greatly enjoy cinematic puzzles, and directors who have the wherewithal, guts and personal integrity to stick to their guns and project their distinct visions without caving in to corporate pressure or normal sensibilities. It is work like this at the cinematic vanguard that makes cinema the most aesthetic of all art forms and the greatest and most intrinsically satisfying component of my life. Though I have Glazer's previous two films, I have sadly not seen them yet, a condition I hope to remedy as soon as possible. A woman and actress of Johansson's beauty is perhaps one of only a select few currently out there who could pull this sort of thing off. And yes, this would make a remarkable double bill with 'The Man Who Fell to Earth'. Expand

The story doesn’t get repetitive or boring, as after a couple of snatches, different encounters unfold.
Some viewers may reject it as arty or pretentious, but it isn't either: the simple, short and original story coupled with the eerie Scottish landscape (urban and natural) and J. Glazer’s mesmerising direction deliver an outstanding cinematic title, which was sadly a box-office flop.

Bare in mind it's not for everyone. Anyway, I was at a party the morning this film came out, and I was super excited I literally left the party even though I had JUST dropped a tab of acid, I had no car at the time so I could only walk, I walked to the store, bought a copy and went home made some tea while I listened to a rap playlist that my friend had given me, not that I listen to rap but I thought "hey why not". (So, I couldn't actually put a name to the songs that were playing or anything it was completely new to me). I put the film into my laptop and started watching, the first 5 or so minutes is a montage of deep space, with what seems like Scarlett Johansson learning phonics for the first time, anyway, without realising the rap-playlist my friend had given was still playing in another window on my laptop, but I didn't realise until maybe 15 minutes into the film, so I started it again, then it just got weirder from there, the acid finally kicked in and all I saw was Scarletts face melting in almost every shot, and at another point I thought I was drowning and gave birth to a child. it was not a good time and I thought that was the weirdest film I had ever seen in my life, anyway, I watched it again, sober this time, and loved it even more :) probably wont be doing acid any more. Compound that with the amount of people literally implying such ridiculous notions as, "you probably just didn't understand everything going on in the film- that's why you didn't like it." No. No I understood what was going on, and it was fairly obvious by about an hour into the film. Up until that hour I was actually enjoying it, I saw it as a sort of abstract thought experiment film that tried to convey the mind of a female serial killer femme fatale- and my goodness realizing what this film WASN'T gonna be about was far more shocking by the time I ultimately reached the miserable ending. You wanna know what obvious imagery they put in this film for people pretentious enough to tell you its a film that involves multiple viewings? Ant on her hand, the ant is human beings! Fly on the glass trying to escape! So is she! This isn't obvious imagery at all! I'm a character that doesn't understand human beings so we'll set the film somewhere in Europe. How about some country where people have a really strong accent! That will make it even more obvious how "alien" Scarlett Johansson's character feels! Scotland? Perfect! Hey lets have a sequence where she completely disregards human life or their safety and totally mislead people in the audience to think, "wow she is totally a psychopath!" This film has disturbing imagery, a nightmarish soundtrack, is immensely suspenseful and all this is immediately ruined by the films sudden desire to commit plot suicide in one of the most contrived, silly, dumb, and poorly written endings that will literally have you wondering why you just waited nearly two hours on a film that ruined its own "twist" only an hour in. If it wasn't obvious from the beginning of the film its only more obvious as it goes on. Which is just abominable and quite frankly could've been pulled off so much better. I'm not accusing the film of being pretentious, but you can't combine a thriller with a Science-fiction twist with the kind of imagery and sequences in this film. It paints the wrong picture for the audience and its very disappointing to both crowds of those particular genres. You want to see Scarlett Johansson nude here and there? Than definitely watch it, however, if you want an E.T. meets Species kind of film you're going to probably want to turn this off, and pick out one or the other- you can't have both anyway- that would just be filthy. The “fill in the blank” story route seems more ignorant and apathetic than artistic or thought provoking. Aliens in human skin is not so revolutionary a concept that it needs much explaining (just examine any politician), but to the degree that Scarlett’s character knew English, how to drive, how to walk, possessed property, rationalized target selection, knew how to seduce, etc., I couldn’t help but wonder what backstory must exist in order for any of that to seem slightly plausible in its fictional world without simultaneously contradicting Scarlett’s jejune character. Alternatively, the poor backstory may have been overlooked if the horror aspect of the film was stronger. Outside of seeing a dude get his organs Criss Angel’d, red goop on a slide (artsay symbologay!!!), babies being Tarzan’d (beginning of crab people?), and perverts, for an alien horror movie this is located fairly low on the terror spectrum. I think it is worth noting that Johanssan’s hidden camera improv was good, but her awkward attitudes manifested in a fairly unnatural or disingenuous way (awkwardly acting awkward-ception). Also, why was nudity a thing? Naked people still= artsy? Seemed more like eye candy for boner grins instead of an honest illustration of on the surface beauty. Overall, certainly not a bad movie, especially for its genre, but personally I did not find it all that great either (less is not always more). Maybe robot instead of alien (perhaps a bit easier to explain)? Illuminati confirmed… Expand

To be honest, I think I would have been bored silly watching ScarJo drive around for as much as she did, but the eerie, grindy violin soundtrack was hypnotizing, and the camera work, scene composition, and lighting were quite beautiful. It was a pleasure to watch. If you're just wondering if it's good or bad and don't wanna read a review I'll tell you, in short, yes it is good, but it's certainly not for everyone.

The movie itself begins with something similar to a 2001-Esque intro. The pacing is very slow, and is hard to keep the casual moviegoers attention, but to art movie fans, there are plenty of symbolic and artistic qualities shown throughout. There are only a few words spoken but the images are very interesting. They sort of give this movie a dreamy quality. Now with all of that said, there isn't much else to say. I probably would've enjoyed it more had I known what to expect, because I certainly wasn't expecting to see what I saw. There is lots and lots AND LOTS of nudity so this isn't a family-gathering type of movie. My friend and I enjoyed it, although the reviews are a bit too high. My sister, who is more casual with movies absolutely loathed it. I say go for it if you're feeing whimsy. It's an interesting piece to say the least.

The insensibility of Johansson's character by what is typically human is terrifying. Her wanderings stops in a slaughterhouse art-movie, over a syllogism of fragmented images where the black stuff and the annoying sound are the materialization of the Johansson's human emptiness. Maybe once banished, some experiments for feel like humans (eat, sex) come back to her with disgusting aversion and put she lost in the mist of peculiar human nature. Human cognitive world is as annoying to "they" as the plain life for/of some of us. She then tasted be preyed by weird human inhumanity of a sort of men (as the same of her own kind of fellows). Fixing of human skin by other kind of taxidermist, the visitors wrenching out the resemblance of humanity that is present in all men for disguise of some. There is a strong appeal in this experimental movie, cumbersome and disturbing. Expand

If you wanted to see this movie just because of Scarlett Johansson and you don’t really like slow-paced movies, then I am afraid you should see another movie.

For me, I enjoyed this movie despite its slow-paced story. I never expected to be immersed watching this movie as its plot slowly unveils itself.

There might have been many interpretations what this movie is about so in my own interpretation, the story is told from an alien humanoid point of view of what human life is like and how she tries to adapt the world around her. I wouldn’t be surprised if this is what the movie is trying to tell.

The best part about this movie was its direction and cinematography. It’s what made this movie worth my time to watch thanks to its eye appealing cinematography. Not to forget is the score of this movie in which enhances the movie experience for me so much that it literally gave me chills in the backbone.

Scarlett Johansson played her role brilliantly in a very ambitious art house movie. She is a very good listener on what the director wants her to do and she had a good improvise timing on many scenes where she has to improvise. She shows that she isn’t just some actress with a pretty face, she is a serious actress who will do what’s tasked to her.

Under The Skin is a great art-house movie with great performance and on screen presence of Scarlett Johansson and eye-appealing cinematography and direction but this movie is not for everyone to see.

The whole thing is Scarlett driving or standing with a dopey slack jawed expression - it's not remotely sexy or entertaining to watch her, nothing is conveyed, and not even for the occasional absence of her clothes is it worth sitting though this huge stinking pile or nonsense. Thank God for directors that don't rely on a heavy classical soundtrack that annoys and distracts. Natural noises, such as wind blowing, footsteps, clocks ticking are far more effective. When music was used it was creepy and atmospheric. The bleak Scottish cityscapes and natural beauty only added to the atmosphere. There are scenes in the film I will never forget. I thought Scarlett Johansson was terrific, although I'm already a big fan of hers. I don't need a complete story tied up in a bow for satisfaction, this little slice of Sci Fi was excellent. My only small critiques was that the story of an alien or robot becoming sympathetic to humans has been done before many times, and the Scottish accents were so heavy I couldn't understand some of the dialogue, but it was not distracting enough to ruin my enjoyment. Not for everyone but if it is your style you will love it. A director to watch for sure. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I rated it a 2 because of Scarlett Johansson; if it had been Melissa McCarthy I would have given it a zero.
The main message of this movie is that life (and this movie) is long, lonely and boring unless you are having sex.
A "man cave" is one thing but an "alien cave" is a whole different matter.
One of the messages the movie conveys (which every man knows and no woman will ever believe) is that a man doesn't care what a woman's house looks like, just as long as he's gonna get laid.
There was another very enlightening concept in the movie - when S.J's character is in the restaurant and all the patrons turn and stare at her and realize that she is an alien because humans never gag on dessert.
Spoiler alert: Scarlett Johansson's character was played by a black person!

Scarlett Johansson offers a brilliant performance- subtle at the start with an increasing sense of emotional peril as she loses her "human" exterior but seems to gain an inner humanity.

The story follows her change from heartless, unemotional and detached alien doing her job of collecting specimens, (or skins) for an unsaid nefarious purpose, to her bonding with humanity to the point that she betrays her employer/fellow aliens as she tries to rather hopelessly join the local earthlings and taste the joys and pains of humanity.

The film handles this in such an abstract and original way that it takes effort to keep up. It is not a film for those who want to leer at naked Johansson- which results in the negative scores, which, if you think about it, is really funny.

This is a film of the quality found in the directorial hands of a very few directors- Antonio and Kubrick spring to mind. It demands we watch it at it's own pace, and it moves away from the regular trappings of standard sci-fi fare into more artsy, thinking realms.

The performances of many of Scarlett's male victims seem natural and unforced- you really get the feeling she is preying upon people on our "real earth" as we pass through shopping malls and drab, regular, lower middle class places. This wildly complements the scenes aboard the alien's den, which are stark, artistically blank canvases. The effect is jarring and unsettling.

Some viewers complain about a "lack of story", but I didn't find this true at all. Johansson's brilliant double metamorphosis from lovely perfect human exterior with it's cold, calculating inhuman interior, into just the opposite- an alien monstrosity which now possesses empathy, joy, curiosity, pity and fear- is a might and moving transformation, and for this viewer, following this path is what gives Under the Skin it's unique look at the human condition, from a perspective I had not visited before.

And that is what film, when it is art, is all about.
Beautiful and horrific at the same time, this magnificent film reminds me of that similar balance of humanity and terror found in the equally wonderful Swedish vampire film, Let the Right One In.

This movie is for those who like real contemplation after their films- definitely not for the quickie gore/sexy nude actress crowd, nor the thrill ride set either, and I expect having Scarlett in the lead role, and the knowledge that she bares all here, (more than most actors ever will in the most extraordinary ways), probably has led many to expect an entirely different sort of experience than this smart, beautifully original motion picture.

The film wanted to be very elusive and deep, but ultimately wound up being incredibly dull and uninteresting. On top of that, it was essentially like eavesdropping on a conversation between two people you do not know and you hear one of them tell the other a story. Along the way, you pick up some details and know what is going on, but you never really feel involved in the conversation and, ultimately, the story does not really have any kind of impact on you. That is this film. It tried so hard to be deep that it never really made you feel involved and care about the characters involved. On top of that, it never truly develops any character, namely because it never established any of them. This one did nothing with its characters for many reasons, the main one to me being that they wanted it to seem more artsy than it truly was, which was off-putting.

Now, there are some positives, namely the incredible cinematography. There are some seriously gorgeous shots in this one that truly floored me to the point that I really wanted to love this film. Scarlett Johansson was also very good here, even though her lines were limited. As a whole, Under the Skin is a beautiful film that lacks any true substance or quality beyond its looks. There is nothing under the skin about this one.

I understand some things can be left to our imagination,
but 1)what happened to the swimmer?
2)what in the hell went down with the diseased man?
3)Why was there a small group of aliens (human form/bikers) already there?
So I will be a bit shocked if this gets a best picture nomination although I loved it anyway.
I mean there are critics raving about this movie as one of the best of the year. Seriously? I mean did seeing Scarlet naked really rock some of these critic's worlds that much or what?

While I was extremely disappointed at the end of the movie, I don't want to give a scathing review. This film is meant to be watched several times. It's meant to be studied, and I didn't study it.

As a work of art, this movie shines. As a science-fiction movie, this movie fails utterly. The science fiction aspects are cast aside, as if the details are unimportant. Who are they? Where are they from? What are they doing? What do they want? If you're watching the film as a piece of art, the answers don't really matter. But as someone who enjoys science fiction, the film ended prematurely before most of the questions were answered, or in some ways even addressed.

Under The Skin's merit lies almost entirely in its subtle, deeper analysis. As a viewer, we're not expected to enjoy the movie without a considerable amount of effort on our part. This is not to say that all movies should spoon-feed a plot to the viewer, but I think there is a healthy balance between story-telling and allegory, and this film seems miss that happy medium.

Good work. It's nice to see Scarlet Johansson doing something a bit out of the ordinary since she came to the public eye like most young women in film-doing more girlie type movies that were meant for audiences of young women. That being well and good I liked the ending of this movie and they way they portrayed the aliens as something truly alien that we basically couldn't communicate with at all. Might be like that. I liked the scenery of Scotland also. I think that them shooting it there was a good idea as it gave the project a feeling of otherness somehow. Go see it, but don't go alone. Expand

The more I think about it, though, these details do not matter. The viewer is given room to think for themselves and I appreciated the opportunity to fill in the gaps myself. Most of the movie provides enough information to draw general conclusions and powerful emotions. Some people will hate it because this is a sensual rather than a narrative experience. People expect stories and this is more like an out of body experience. I found it fascinating. I learned things about people, about humanity. We are good. We are lustful. We are kind. We are ugly. We are stupid. We are beautiful. We are tragic.

I will give a positive rating to any movie that is unforgettable. Or a movie that can change the way I see humanity. I think the scene where she leaves the baby on the beach will stay with me forever. And the conversation she has with the ugly man and her decision to run away after his escape. These scenes were powerful, logical, and downright fascinating. I can’t stop thinking about this movie.

It was disturbing to see humanity through the lens of this thing that walked among us in such a friendly city. That she was looking for lonely men made her less despicable. That she attempted to fit in for a while and try to live among us was both charming and pathetic. What happened at the end of the movie made sense, because she didn’t fit in. She was objectified by men… brought out the worst in most (but the best in others).

Art is left up for interpretation, and I think this qualifies. People will either hate or love this movie. It was too over-simplified to mask its deficits with confusing b.s. … it did not attempt to hide its flaws. It was deliberately made this way, whether you liked it or not. I liked it better than most movies i have ever seen. It gave me new insights. It got under my skin.

Firstly I need to say that this movie IS artistic. Being very VERY weird. The storyline is not a storyline, the characters are not characters and so long! Actually; the characters aren't very detailed. May that Scarlett Johnson played in this movie as the main character, this didn't make the movie better. It was a very creepy movie some times or rather boring at the start. The soundtrack is the part of the creepiness and also the idea. The storyline is also not very detailed but very well placed and I liked, to be honest, it's idea. Not a very good movie, a short one but a rather fascinating one. I don't know if this should be like a recommending review but it's your choice.

Now on to the review. For those who are fans of the Faber novel - on which this movie is based - don't expect to know what in the hell the book is all about. I had to look up the Cliff notes. The movie is a stylistic, art house, abstract adaptation of the book. Sort of like a trip to the MoMA rather than the Met. Is you're in the mindset...you'll enjoy it. It's well acted, well written and generally well put together. Thought provoking, powerful imagery are the strongest points of the movie. Overall, a memorable piece of film worth watching.

Yet after watching the film I wondered if it was even worth trying to figure it out. Wish Johansson had saved the nude scenes for a better film. Anyway, what does it all mean? One possible clue, I think, lies in a very brief, but pointed mention of the upcoming Referendum for Scotland and the possibility of independence from England. When considering who the characters are and the plot, this wider political context made sense to me. So, for me the film is a parable about the shedding of a colonial power for national independence. Interesting how "woman" figures in such anti-colonial narratives. But your guess is as good as mine! Expand

The whole move is a complete disappointment for me. It starts slow, and I would say it ends slow, but there really isn't much of an ending. But whatever it does in the final minutes of the movie, it does that slow as well.

I understand that many people see much that is deep visually and metaphorically, but lets be real. This movie was not about entertainment. I don't know what anyone saw in any scene to be called "beautiful" or when exactly the plot was "mindblowing" because it simply never did anything for me.

The plot was simple, unoriginal. The music was fitting (I guess) since it matched the movie's content (of which there was very little). Now while I do like many of the modern action films full of explosions, I also really love anything that makes me think. This one only made me think of why I bothered sitting through this entire movie. Again, nothing was visually all that appealing. Special effects at times reminded me either of a movie made in the 60s or 70s or perhaps just a super crappy 80s B movie.

Bash modern films as you will, but they were certainly much more appealing visually than this one. Personally there was more depth to the script, the visuals, the effects, the story, the everything in a movie like Transformers (gasps all around), and I only watch those movies to watch explosions! I don't even expect good acting or good stories out of the Transformer movies, but wow they really beat up on Under the Skin in every conceivable way.

I guess if you want an awkward movie that is predictable, that gives you nothing, that makes you consider sleeping or turning it off, look no further because it's here.

This is some of those things but so, so much less! People seem to be satisfied with, wonderful shots, such as the child on the beach. "That was a unique shot." To them I say SO WHAT!? Go to a gallery then to stare at some wonderful photographs or paintings. I don't mind lack of narrative, but this movie has lack of interest, lack of anything. I would not recommend the film for people who enjoy the usual Hollywood fare of spectacle and explosion. If you enjoyed movies like those of Andrei Tarkovsky, you will love this. Scarlett Johansson is once again beguiling and stunning. An amazing movie!

- If you like nonsense and torture.
- If you want to be the first person to like a movie that none of your friend liked before.
- Or if you want to impress a person because you`ve watched a sci-fi - drama - art movie
then even in this situations don`t watch.
Read a detailed spoiler and just 50x fastplay, without sound watch it. First half of the film was a greater torture. I considered minimum 4 times quit watching and countless times fast forwarding (That was first time in my life). God please help me to forget this experience. What a waste of time

It belongs firmly in the latter and is top-line. Johansson shows again what she is capable of when given the opportunity to develop a character (see Lost in Translation).

With little dialogue, the interactions of the characters are intensified into a choreography and the story, itself almost banal, is just a space in which to dance. There will not be a sequel and both sides of the community will be grateful, but for very different reasons.

Why? Because it is refreshing to see a film that relies on the exercising of our cerebrums rather than satisfying the "lizard" parts of our brain with non-stop action, gratuitous sex, and over-the-top CGI animation. Ironically, it is exactly that older, basic part of our brain to which the hapless victims in this film succumb, lured by the de-glammed and striking natural beauty of Scarlett Johansson, an apparent alien known to the viewers and her prey as "Laura." At times both mesmerizing and repulsive, Laura is both succubus and protagonist as we ride this existential roller-coaster to a surprising yet oddly appropriate conclusion. I will admit that your average sci-fi addict may find this film a bit to "artsy," but this movie is much more than a science fiction about aliens who have developed a fondness for human flesh tartare (a far too common theme). This film is more of a mirror reflecting back a sobering view of the human condition, both at its worst and at its best.

When the film starts as a small point of light in the distance surrounded by total darkness, growing ever larger until it is large enough to morph into what appears to be a surreal image of birth, then followed by a transformation into an eclipse and then a human pupil and iris. The accompanying musical score is both irritating and eerie, a combination that makes the viewer edgy and fixated on the imagery. I couldn't help but immediately think of certain scenes from Stanley Kurbrick's "2001: A Space Odyssey," a stylistic homage not lost on many viewers and critics, it seems. Next we see a fully safety-suited motorcyclist (the suit almost reminds one of a space garment) retrieve the body of a young woman (Scarlett Johansson) from what appears to be a ditch on the side of the road. The next scene is of this body placed on a lighted floor being stripped by a naked woman (also Ms. Johansson) who then puts on her clothes just as we see a single tear coming from the left eye and running down the cheek of the newly naked woman on the floor. The alien woman (but is she really a woman?) now has the appearance of the doomed female on the floor. From this point forward, "Laura" drives about Glasgow in a white, windowless van selecting her prey (young men) like an urban-camouflaged jaguar. She feigns being lost, a ploy that allows her to interview various men on the street, making sure they meet the right profile (young, strong, single, childless, live alone), then seductively offers them a ride that ends horribly for each victim who passes through the entry way to her home. Once inside, the seductive dance continues as Laura, well ahead of her duped would-be lover, continues to strip in an endless dark space covered by a jet-black, shining floor. Her amorous suitors, following entranced, also de-cloth, and soon the floor turns into black liquid that engulfs each one, at which point Laura gathers up her discarded apparel on what to her is a still solid floor. At one point the director allows us to see the fate that awaits those who become encased in this pool, and it is one of the most horrific scenes in cinematic history, and also where we learn one of the meanings of the film's title .

Ultimately, the huntress Laura lures a facially disfigured man into her inescapable liquid web, but then allows him to leave even after he becomes submerged, the first evidence of compassion exhibited by the alien (As an illustration of just how devoid of compassion these visitors can be, in an earlier scene, Laura is chatting up a foreign surfer on the beach as a woman tries to save her drowning dog from the raging surf, her husband then tries to save her, then finally the surfer tries to save the husband, but fails, only to wash up on the beach to be clubbed over the head by Laura and dragged off to her van, as the family's infant is left crying, now alone on the beach. The abandoned child is still there, hours later, when the motorcycle man shows up to clean up the crime scene, completely ignoring the child.). After letting the one man escape (her act of mercy later thwarted by the motorcycle driver), something changes, leaving Laura in a semi-catatonic state, abandoning her van and wandering aimlessly through Glasgow and into the country side where a well-meaning man takes here in and tries to nurse her back to health. It is at this point she seems to awaken to the fact that humans are more than haute cuisine. It is also following this epiphany that she is exposed to both the best and worst aspects of human behavior, the final consequences of the latter that lead to her demise.

I found this movie refreshing, chilling, artistically brilliant, and thought provoking. Scarlett Johansson was the perfect combination of feline seductress and passionless, other-worldly entity that slowly transforms into confused catatonia as she begins to develop empathy for her former prey.

If you're not an Intellectual you'll hate this...
