I found I couldn't tell the "good guys" apart from the "bad guys." I admired the effects overall, and the film certainly gives sound designers and editors a nice showpiece. But I never really desired to see any of the sequels.

The other afternoon, I had some free time on my hands, and wanted to watch something mindless. I sure picked the right film. I mean, where do I start in running down the reasons this film is stinker?!?!

#1: Script/plot. What a mess. In typical form for director Michael Bay, scenes of more than a few seconds are rare. He must have and assume we do too, the lowest attention span of anyone on the planet. It creates a frantic pace that's exhausting to keep up with and never worth it. The dialogue is INANE, where characters are sketched in moments and then forever locked into their type. Many don't even have a real character developed at all: I mean, Josh Duhamel has been in two of these, ostensibly in a major role, and yet I have ZERO idea what kind of character he is. The story bounces all over and little is rationally explained. The film basically wants us to just watch little chunks of storytelling and not worry about how it ties together.

#2: The action. It's what we're really here for, isn't it? And it's as bad as the first film. Again, I couldn't tell the transformers apart readily. The Fallen (what a DUMB name) looks a lot like the good guy with the Liam Neeson accent. When they fight, no one can tell them apart. It's just a bunch of clanking grey metal. And there is no consistency as to what kills one of these creature/machines. Some get huge holes punched right through their middles and keep going. Others are flung against a wall and die. They seem to be easy to kill or indestructible at will. I can only imagine the work the special effects team put into all this, and it looks pretty spectacular until you try to make sense out of the combat. The climactic scenes, set near the ancient pyramids of Egypt (one of which is utterly destroyed!) are confusing locations. The camp where our GIs await Sam Witwicky (our hero, played by Shia LeBeouf) seems to be near the action at times and FAR away at others. Sam seems to be right there, and then he seems to be far away still. It's all so stupid.

#3: Acting. Terrible. Shia LeBeouf is clearly barely interested in this role, and he's the best of the bunch. It ranges from generic, I'm-here-to-get-paid (Josh Duhamel or Tyrese) to frantically over-the-top (John Turturro, trying his best to be comic relief but instead just being annoying) to unwatchable (Megan Fox). Megan Fox is simply the worst actress I have ever seen. Sure, she's built like a model...but she brings not one single second of believable character or emotion to the film. She has no comic timing. No ability to connect with those around her, making her "love" scenes with Shia truly cringeworthy. Simply awful. Awful, awful, awful. Wow, she's bad.

#4: Humor. Well, the first film succeeded in being entertaining early on with some amusing bits where the world gets introduced to Transformers. There were some cheap but at least genuine laughs there. NOW, all attempts at humor are forced. LaBeouf has lost virtually all his natural charm in this film, so you don't even enjoy his energy. There are two little "jive talking" transformers who are merely uncomfortable and unfunny racial stereotypes. It's all ham-fisted and not funny.

#5: Sound. The film sounds great. If you have a surround sound speaker and good sub-woofer, get ready for the windows to rattle. Again, these guys do a great job in the service of a bad film. They are the only reason the film isn't one-star.

REVENGE OF THE FALLEN is simply amateurish and insulting. Insulting to our intelligence and pocket books. Why, oh why, did I watch this?

My issue with Michael Bay's direction in this is the action, of course. It's just so difficult to trace what's going on for the bulk of every set piece. So many Transformers are thrown our way in this one that it left me feeling like a 55-year-old dad taking his kids to see this. "Which ones are the Decepticons again?" "Who's shooting at who?" "Is that Megatron or Starscream onscreen right now?" Every action scene feels needlessly impersonal, with so many repeated beats and visual cues. I cannot tell you how many times characters will run towards the camera in slow motion, with explosions/Transformers following them from behind. All that said, there's some charm here and there — all of it mostly nostalgia-based, by the way — and a few impressive effects (considering this thing is nearly 15 years old now). Make no mistake, though, this is bottom of the barrel fare and not what blockbusters should be like. Expand

Unfortunately, there was a serious chemical imbalance in Revenge of the Fallen. Unfortunately, this sequel's fight scenes were only longer, louder, and less inventive than the highly praised ones from the first film. Although Shia la Boeuf's performance in this movie was once again laudable, I wouldn't completely recommend it. The majority of the battle scenes were filmed in slow motion since the filmmaker needed to provide a more dramatic effect, however after nine or ten of them, it can start to grow tiresome before becoming humorous. It was an original action movie, which I can't say about the sequel. Since the main characters are already familiar with the Autobots and we know how everything works, there's almost none of that epic surprise moment. Where the first one scored points, it doesn't do so well here. What makes this film good is the action, which is still plenty and still awesome, even if it still remains far behind the finale from the previous installment. Besides, there is less of it here as the film slows down the pace. From a certain point on, it became quite uninteresting for me and downright drawn out towards the end. The plot is quite weak. Unfortunately Transformers as a franchise failed in my eyes. The first was revolutionary and great, but this one is "only" good. It's still good though and for someone looking for action I can recommend it. Expand

I really liked the first movie so there was no way I could believe that THIS franchise could possibly be bad (although I did see that later on, I didn't see it here). In my review of the first movie I said how I got interested in the Transformers franchise after watching it, since I didn't know this was actually a toys company and not an anime series. If that movie was just the introduction, this was where the real action takes place.
I saw Revenge of the Fallen on Amazon Prime soon after the first one. I only had one week left before my Prime subscription would expire, so I had only decided to dedicate this time to watching all the Transformers movies so that I could understand what this franchise is all about. Unlike the future movie this one actually expanded on what was established at the first movie. Although the human characters were not as interesting as the previous movie and the story was also pretty much empty, the action scenes completely made up for it.
As usual the CGI and action was very good. The new characters introduced were fun to watch. I really like to see it when new characters are brought in and given their own character development as they transform into cool cars. However not everything about this movie was good. Like I said above the human characters were not as interesting. The entire blood about Sam going to college and his parents continuously pestering him was very annoying. This was the last time we got to see Mikaela, which is also something very sad IYKWIM.
This movie was able to explain very well the entire concept of Transformers, something that the prequel fail to do so. Before I used to think that Autobots and Decepticons are supposed to be cars, but now I know that they are actually robots which can turn themselves into whatever they see in front of them. I would definitely give a rewatch afterwards sometime in the future whenever I have to show this franchise to a new generation.

This film is slightly messy, but only if you don't pay attention. The movie isn't finished yet, and you can tell; there are some funny awkward jokes strewn around, and there are a few minor narrative holes here and there, but I can see where they're heading, and I LOVE it. The plot is very interesting to explore, including the history of Transformers and the lasting effects of that legacy that transcends time. Also you will not find better action in any other film than in this one; the action is nonstop and visually appealing and it will keep you at the edge of your seat. All in all, my childhood favorite and an actually enjoyable watch. Expand

I was absolutely amazed. I couldn't take my eyes off the screen. The good: the effects (zowie!), better jokes and Sam's mom was hysterical. The "twins" also added some great humor. The bad: filming crews tend to forget that when they film with their backs to the sun, they can still be seen. In several scenes, you could see the film crew shadows. Also, in the opening scene, the action was so fast it was hard to tell who was who and it ended too quickly. The ending also screeched to a halt. It could have used a little more cool-down time. The ugly: I also took my two kids (8 and 6). There was, unfortunately, more language in this one and a lot more sexual jokes-- good thing the kids are too young to understand them. There was one scene that I had to cover their eyes because it was a little gross for them. But overall, they loved it.

Then I started talking to some people and some are calling it racist. Personally, I have no idea where they're getting that from. But you'll always find people who complain no matter what. These are probably the same people that said "The Lion King" was racist too. This is a perfect summer flick: amazing effects, well-timed humor and characters you could feel for. All in all, I loved it and I'll definitely see it again.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The movie is protracted, exaggerated and long, lasting 2 hours and 29 minutes. The most hateful thing is that there are still many domestic advertisements. Apart from the excellent fighting scenes, I can't think of anything else to praise. If so, it's Optimus Prime. He's so cool! I hope these advertisements didn’t come and disturb me watching Optimus Prime. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen pulled me out of the original world, and these robots conveyed an apocalyptic sense of the end of the world, in which they looked strange and lovely. But when I was watching the movie, I saw a lot of advertisements and felt a little angry. It seems that our people are making money from other people's movies. Expand

Everything are bad except the CG. If you want a film with large plot holes, lack of any emotional attachment to characters, and 2 and a half hours of mind numbing colors and explosions, then this is the film for you.

I think is really for die hard fans only of this version of this Transformers universe. Everyone else only really needs to watch the first movie for sure and move on. This sequel doesn't improve on the series in any real meaningful way.

Disappointing. This awful sequel wears us out completely with a crude, noisy and under-plotted story. I want to say that the CGI is great, but the action scenes are just a bunch of flashy and noisy mess.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie was highly anticipated when it came out - for a good reason. The first one was very fun and entertaining, so it was obvious that people would get excited. To my disappointment, this movie feature a ridiculous plot. A little piece of the Cube gets stuck to Sam's shirt and he goes crazy! Starts seeing visions and makes that autistic face. In the first movie, he was carrying the whole Cube! Why didn't he go insane before. Because it's Transformers, no one cares what happened in the last one right? The character of Leo annoyed me so much, he is Jar Jar Binks of this movie. The incredible amount of dick and balls and sex jokes overwhelms. The racist twin Transformers are there to please the rednecks. Very disappointed. Expand

All the characters have some good and bad things about them, like for example the twins Skids and Mudflap they can be funny but the are extremely racist. I also hate that they killed off optimus in the middle, They brought him back too life at the end but its still the fact that they killed off the most iconic character. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Watched this last night but was only able to make it through till the half hour mark. Without question THE most obnoxious 30 minutes of cinema I have ever seen. The film starts well with an African tribe, a tiger and robots. A robot crushes a man underfoot - excellent. Next we move onto an action sequence which is very confusing - noise, explosions, slow motion and the camera moves around a lot. Then we move to the suburban home of Shia LeBoufe and the movie actually becomes physically impossible to watch. The camera lingers on Megan Fox in the most gross way imaginable. We see two dogs having s*x. Shia's dad acts in an inappropriately s*xual way with his mam. His mam is bumping gums throughout, just being really annoying. Then there is shooting and fire and at that point I turned it off. Expand

After 2016, where everything wrong with America was suddenly maximised, where the country embarrassed itself over and over, resulting in the election of an unbelievably moronic, hateful clown without a hint of real knowledge of the political position he endeavoured to and somehow succeeded to obtain, these movies just remind me of how much I hate the U.S.A. Enough is enough - this not the real Transformers, it's a brainless imitation and a disgrace. I can't sit through them now. That said, I didn't LIKE the film either: it's horribly written, poorly acted, and way too long for its own good, but "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen," if you know what you're getting into, is not the worst film ever made (Please, internet, don't hate me for saying such a thing). That said, it's not GOOD, and I'd recommend you turn your brain off when you watch this film, otherwise you won't get the full effect. Expand

Good: The Visual Effects look as amazing as they are in all of the Transformers movie, Peter Cullen as Optimus Prime and Hugo Weaving as Megatron, the forest fight scene, Jetfire had some funny humor (minus one fart joke with a parachute)

Bad: The plot has too much going on at the same time, Except for some of Jetfires humor, none of the other humor in the movie worked (it can be a bit racist some times), Shia Labeouf is really annoying some times. Apparently, I'm in the minority, though, because the original Transformers made more money than I'd see in 300Call me old fashioned, but I like a little side story and character to go along with my order of big, loud special effects. Apparently, I'm in the minority, though, because the original Transformers made more money than I'd see in 300 lifetimes. So kick back, dig into your jumbo faux butter-drenched popcorn, and slurp your gargantuan soda while experiencing the kind of supersized mayhem that only Michael Bay can deliver. It's a question of whether the cholesterol in the "butter" will harden your arteries before what's on the celluloid can cause brain death.

The robots are all back: Optimus Prime, Megatron, Bumblebee, Megan Fox. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen takes one part inspiration from the Godzilla movies, one part inspiration from Star Wars, and one part inspiration from all the commas in the number associated with the budget. In a nutshell, my problems with the second Transformers are largely the same ones I had with the 2007 edition: the story doesn't make any sense, the characters are annoying, the action is dull and repetitive, and during machine-on-machine throwdowns, it's impossible to figure out who the good guys are. The biggest difference: 15 more minutes. Talk about self-indulgent. This movie would be too long at 1.5 hours. It never wants to end. Forget merely wandering out to the concession stand in the middle of the proceedings to refill that oil drum-sized bucket of popcorn. You can get in your car, drive to the nearest supermarket, do your week's shopping, and return and you'll be no less confused than those who stayed for the whole thing. Sad but true.

Going into detail about the plot will make me sound like I'm recapping the backstory for a children's coloring book, but here are the basics. It seems that, around 17,000 B.C. (early enough that it predates last year's Roland Emmerich prehistoric disaster), the Transformers came to Earth for the first time. There was some kind of big war and a giant weapon and the key to use it were hidden. Cut to today. There are more Decepticons (bad guys) headed for Earth, led by The Fallen (voice of Tony Todd). He has sent his minions ahead to resurrect Megatron (voice of Hugo Weaving) and kill Optimus Prime (voice of Peter Cullen). Once those things are accomplished, he can invade, get the key and the weapon, and destroy Earth's sun. Unfortunately, in his way stands a puny human named Sam (Shia LeBeouf) and his gorgeous android-like girlfriend, Mikaela (Megan Fox). Having accidentally taken home a shard of the Allspark doesn't dissuade Sam from attending the University of Pennsylvania, so that's where he is when Megatron's underlings find him. Much chaos ensues.

There is a famous term in theater and film called "deus ex machina." It means, literally, "God by machine," and is frequently used to describe an event when unbelievable coincidences or contrivances are needed to move the plot in a certain direction. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen takes this term to heart. There is a scene late in the movie when we come face to face with machine gods who tweak events so everything will turn out right. There's a temptation to argue that, with something this blunt, it has to be satire. Unfortunately, Michael Bay has not built his reputation upon sophisticated satire and he doesn't seem to be winking at the audience.

Now is probably not the time to heap scorn on the writing team of Orci and Kurtzman (abetted by Ehren Kruger), who are responsible for this screenplay. At the moment, the pair are enjoying praise for their Star Trek reboot. Let's be honest, though - that's not exactly an airtight story, but compared to this one, it's a masterpiece of coherence and ingenuity. Pundits have pointed out similarities in Star Trek to Star Wars, but they're even more obvious here, with Megatron playing Darth Vader to The Fallen's Emperor. And Orci and Kurtzman out-menace The Phantom Menace by providing not one, but two, imitation Jar Jar Binks.

In the long run, this review will be worth even less than what John Nance Garner called the Vice Presidency of the United States. Transformers fans, salivating for two years awaiting this sequel, will queue up to see it, then leave the theater and get back in line again. The storyline is so infantile that it will appeal to young kids (or at least to those with XY sex chromosomes), although one has to wonder whether the length will be something of an impediment. The target viewer for this movie is not noted for a long attention span. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen will make a ton of money, Michael Bay will be lauded as the greatest director of our generation, and the accountants at Paramount will have their second collective orgasm in as many months. As for me, I will try desperately not to weep - not so much for what the success of a movie like this means to motion pictures but for the simple fact that I'm going to have to do this all over again in two or three years for Transformers 3.

As it lumbers up the dusty colossus, a shot tilts up to its mid-section, revealing two wrecking balls dangling down. Yes, Michael Bay, the man whocomprised of several construction vehicles, set on clawing its way to the peak of a pyramid. As it lumbers up the dusty colossus, a shot tilts up to its mid-section, revealing two wrecking balls dangling down. Yes, Michael Bay, the man who brought us cyber-micturition in this movie’s predecessor, has one-upped himself: Decepticon testicles.

If the thought of that gag makes you laugh, chances are you’ll have a ball with Revenge Of The Fallen. If not… well, Bay really doesn’t care. His first and only sequel since Bad Boys 2 is, like that film, marked by swaggering confidence, wild excess and a string of bad-taste jokes. Dogs hump each other, robots hump human legs and the camera spends so much time ogling Megan Fox’s torso you start to wonder if it’s being operated by a 13 year-old boy. There are now 42 robots, including one that looks like a jaguar, one that can turn into ball bearings to access high-security areas and one in the form of a Dyson vacuum cleaner.

It all looks good on paper, as does the added-value 150-minute run time. But it’s a case of same meal, bigger portion, with the flaws of the first not only present but accentuated. You’ll be even more hard pressed at the end of this one to remember which robot’s which — there are three or four new Gremlin-esque ones that chitter and skitter about like the first movie’s Frenzy — and few get more than a scene before Bay’s attention flits elsewhere. Even the Fallen, an Emperor figure to Megatron’s Darth Vader, who can hurl tanks around with the aid of his jagged staff, is only blandly nefarious.

The plot, meanwhile, is as baffling as before, not only bringing back the abstruse Allspark but throwing in a new MacGuffin called the ‘Matrix of Leadership’. It tries harder to be funny but is actually less so, despite Shia LaBeouf working some early new-kid-on-campus schtick, Rainn Wilson amusing in a single scene as a rock-star astronomy teacher, and John Turturro doing an entertaining reprise of MIB wannabe Simmons (“What you’re about to see is top secret: do not tell my mother”). This is a film that doesn’t know where to stop — even comic-relief characters get their own comic-relief characters, like the offensively irritating Twins, who bicker in hip-hop slang, or Wheels, a turncoat Decepticon who for some reason talks like a ‘30s screen gangster.

What saves it, just about, are the effects. At times the frame is so packed with whirring cogs and twirling cranks that you could replicate the effect by staring at the innards of a domestic appliance, but when these CG moto-men from another world duke it out, the images are often so screwy it’s impossible to do anything but sit and stare. The Shanghai-set opening sequence is lunatic fun, with Optimus Prime leaping onto the face of a colossal, rampaging unicycle and ordering it to, “Pull over”. And while Prime’s later forest face-off against a trio of Decepticons suffers by comparison to a recent film’s spar between a big ape and three dinosaurs, there are more flawlessly rendered money shots in the last 40 minutes alone than in a dozen less ambitious blockbusters.

It’s just a shame there aren’t more ideas behind the spectacle, since we’re not given much in the way of compelling reasons to root for one pixelly pugilist over another. Long before the final minute it’s become a numbing, wearying viewing experience. Next time could we have less balls and more brains?

A super-sized second helping, but the novelty factor and some of the charm’s gone. Hey, at least there’s more Megatron / Starscream squabbling this time round.

The first one wasn't all that, but THIS one was filled to the brim with racism, explosions and terrible acting. That's three things you don't want in your movie. I feel like the Micheal Bay movies have definitely shown new people to the franchise, but is that what we really wanted? I mean, the people who saw the movies first are gonna be like, "Oh? That TV show SUCKED, i'm going to go watch the MOVIES! They were WAY BETTER!" and they'll chuck the DVD away. Anyway, I thought this movie sucked. Expand

'Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen' is an unpleasant experience of noisy, overcrowded and damn right annoying features.

While the film delivers on giving us action, comedy, hot girls and cars...what's funny is how I did not enjoy it at all. The pretty girls are a distraction to the film's thinly written script, their pretty faces are to distract from their terrible acting and the overuse of action and special effects are to distract teenage boys, when you cannot even tell which robot is evil and which one is good.

Michael Bay clearly crossed a line when he wanted to make this sequel, it is only two years after the original film was released, so the studio may have rushed him to make another box office money printer.

Bay should have just tried to re-imagine the story, he should have just tried to actually make a sequel to surpass the original with a gripping story instead of just executing it with bombastic special effects that get boring after a while and comic relief that is more offensive than it is funny. There is some racist jokes that clearly are not funny.

'Revenge of the Fallen' is obnoxious, cynical and long, but it does get points for special effects alone, while amazing-looking, go on for too long.

We hoped that it would live up to the first one. Well, we were wrong. So, so, wrong. Admittedly, the first half of the movie is bad, but it was bearable. We got a few action sequences that were cool to watch. But everything goes downhill real fast after Optimus Prime dies. From there on out, its straight up boring, and the finale is very disappointing. Tons of boring dialogue and filler. You just end up not caring and just want the movie to end. Now of course, I have to give props where props are deserved. The visual effects were cool, CGI was still amazing and everything looked real. But, Michael Bay went all out with his Bay-isms. Racism, hot actresses and extras that he is probably trying to pork, and of course, tons and tons of explosions. In the last movie, there weren't too many and they fit into the movie perfectly. In this one, he went overboard with all the explosions. No matter what happened, there was an explosion. Pencil falls, EXPLOSION! Someone falls down, EXPLOSION! This movie also had an incredibly long run time. This movie is boring and it sucks. Expand

If you plan on watching this monstrosity, do yourself a favor and just watch Pacific Rim or the first Transformers movie. Expand

The robots are all back: Optimus Prime, Megatron, Bumblebee, Megan Fox.

Call me old fashioned, but I like a little side story and character to go along with my order of big, loud special effects.

Much chaos ensues.

he "action" is relentless in its monotony. Robots pounding on robots. Humans launching rockets and missiles at robots. Robots wiping out troops of humans. Other robots destroying the great pyramids or climbing to the top of the Empire State Building and aping King Kong. There's some unpleasantness in Paris, as well. For a moment, I want to say the Eiffel Tower is destroyed, but that doesn't occur here; it's in the preview for G.I. Joe, which was shown just before Transformers 2. See how all these films run together? At any rate, this stuff goes on and on and on, far beyond what's necessary for a brain dead motion picture that has nothing to recommend it except its technical prowess. We certainly get the point before the 150-minute mark.

God help me.

The action sequences are horrendous. They look like exploding junkyards that you can hardly differentiate from one another having slap fights. The acting (with a few exceptions) is largely bland and occasionally just plain awful. Specifically, Megan Fox. She's hot, but she has no acting talent. The humor is hardly chuckle-worthy at its best, and borderline offensive in its worst, often resorting to stereotypes to try and get laughs. The climax is wholly unsatisfying, with a complete Deus Ex Machina resurrection of TWO main characters, and a final fight that lasts less than two minutes. Not to mention Sam Witwicky often serves no other purpose than to run and scream for someone to save him. If I had to give some positives, it would be Peter Cullen as Optimus Prime, and the impressive quality of the CGI. Other than that, this is a truly terrible film with very few redeeming values. 'Revenge of Fallen' doesn't just stagnate - it gets worse. The acting (again, with the exception of a brilliant John Turturro) was horrible, even worse than in the first installment, the action scenes overly multiplied in a way that they actually become annoying and the plot was so full of holes that you could actually see through the screen (I mean, really - The Fallen is supposed to be this overly bad-ass bad guy and you give him practically one scene at the end where the revived Optimus kicks his ass in like... 7.3 seconds). The animation just didn't cut it this time and except for several comical moments and the aforementioned animation, this movie just doesn't offer anything.

Certainly something for the fans, but overall - not worth watching.

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen got an awesome plot, great CGI and more adventure than the previous movie, and with great music. There's a much more entertaining story, and the action is awesome. But just as the first move, it suffers with slow and boring scenes and to much of the same stuff that we already have seen.

Better and in every way than the first movie.

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen gets a 6.8/10
