This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

It is weaker than the first Iron Man and Captain America but still enjoyable. After a flashback slightly over 1000 years before that shows the last war between Asgard and the frost giants of Jotunheim we switch to current times. It is Thor's big day as he is named successor to the throne of Asgard in a big ceremony making his oath as ruler. However a group of frost giant uses this distraction to infiltrate Asgard to get back a mayor artifact that was lost during the end of the war. Thor springs into action after this as he is too hotblooded, impatient and wants to prove himself. This causes a mayor fallout between Thor and his father Odin that ends not well for him. Here I stop with this vague lead up to avoid spoilers. It is a heroes journey that is close to the comic sources. It works well enough but there should be a bit more cause for character development. Other Marvel movies did more to be fair. In total it is fine for an introduction movie. The fight scenes are excellent and entertain. Now for the actors we got a solid to good performance. Chris Hemsworth as Thor and Tom Hiddleston as Loki are truly excellent and it became their signature roles. They work well together and the other MCU movies use this well. Natalie Portman as Jane Foster is also great and it is a shame they did not much with her character in later movies. The warriors three, Frigga and Lady Sif are a bit pale or not characterized well but that is the fault of the script not the actors. Idris Elba as Heimdall is great. He has not much screen time but rocks all his scenes. Finally Anthony Hopkins works well as Odin and is also the definite character for this role. So we have some great performances and some characters that are not well used by the script. I rated this a solid to good because of this. Visually the special effects are good but some scenes at the beginning needed a bit of better lighting. Also Asgard looks a bit pale and empty. Overall this is an enjoyable movie. Not the best MCU movie but entertaining. Was also a bit forgotten fast as other MCU movies took the spot lights. Expand

On the one side the Nine Worlds and the background story of Thor are interesting. So the visual effects are great.

On the other side the characters are a bit superficial and one-sided. And some of the scenes look easy.

After finally seeing it I am so glad I did. It is a visually stunning film with excellent cinematography and editing and the costumes, settings and effects look wonderful. There may be the odd longueur in the plot, with a little too much of admiring the scenery, but most of it is amusing and while not sticking true to the original source material there are a lot of nods to it. Kenneth Branagh directs superbly, the action is earth-shattering and the script is filled with witty fish-out-of-water moments. The acting is fine with Chris Hemsworth giving his all in the role, Anthony Hopkins bringing some welcome gravitas to Odin rather than hamming up, Natalie Portman more than a pretty face and Tom Hiddleston's Loki a villain worth watching for. All in all, an immensely enjoyable film. 9/10 Bethany Cox Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is an action adventure film with obvious fantasy (in a mythological, almost science fiction sense) elements presents. It covers themes including father and son relationship and betrayal.

The first half an hour or so is set in the 'realm' or other world and I felt less bothered or interested in it during these scenes as everything just looked so clearly artificial. For me it was when Thor was sent to Earth and forced to get the help of humans, that it really started to interest me. There were definitely some awkward scenes with Thor, finding himself unsure of his surroundings and acting unsurprisingly peculiar to the eyes of onlookers and I found those scenes quite amusing. Of course the plot is somewhat ludicrous but to me it was a mostly enjoyable watch, a bit of fun. I felt that there were some quite impressive special effects used - the visuals are quite good (explosions etc.), with bright lights, fast paced scenes, and plenty to keep you watching. The camerawork is quite good too, with various angles used and quick cutting between them, meaning that it doesn't get especially boring (in terms of looking too bland or stale) while characters are in discussion.

Cast wise, Chris Hemsworth plays the title role of Thor - he very much looks the part in as much as he sounds quite reverential and looks to have a steely, determined expression on his face for most of the film. Jane Foster is portrayed by Natalie Portman, who plays a fairly typical somewhat air-headed young American adolescent. She seems quite excited by the prospect of finding some proof that things science say aren't real, are. She seemed pretty believable in her role. Anthony Hopkins plays Thors father, Odin, an aged yet wise man who clearly has learnt a lot in his time. I thought Hopkins role was particularly good and he was well suited to it. Tom Hiddleston plays Loki, Thors brother.I also thought he was well cast as he seemed very much to be enjoying playing the role of the somewhat meddling brother, who always has something to say and another way of seeing things. Other cast members include Clark Gregg as agent Coulson, Idris Elba as Heimdall, Ray Stevenson as Vostagg and Jaimie Alexander as Sif.

Yes this film is a bit silly and it does take itself seriously but I thought it was an entertaining watch. I'm no massive fan of Marvel comics per se but I can enjoy some film adaptations if made with good quality effects, cast and scripting. The effects and cast were all quite high quality and the camerawork was good too. The characterisation wasn't too bad either.

Content wise, this film contains some mild sex references and partial nudity (such as scenes in which Thor is topless). There is violence present, although it isn't particularly bloody, if anything its more comic in style, with people, or beings, attacked by blades and hammers. There are some scenes which may be relatively frightening to young children, with the music played in the background and the effects used making it clear that things are perilous, although nothing graphic is shown. Language wise, some fairly mild profanities are used but again nothing very explicit. The film has a 12a rating to reflect this content.

There is undeniably an amount of cheese present and I felt that, if anything, in one or two parts it was a bit too over the top, with loud booming/looming orchestral music pieces played, characters trying desperately to out wit one another with potentially worrying outcomes and the sense of doom is over done in my opinion but I did think that overall it was an adequately entertaining film, which was certainly mildly immersive and had its funny moments too.

Yes I'd recommend this as an entertaining watch. It features a good cast, some decent characterisation, good special effects and decent camerawork, although it is definitely relatively cheesy in parts and a bit over the top. I enjoyed it in any case and I'm not always keen on such types of film.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Thor has lots of visual appeal, nice performances from the cast as a whole, and entertaining action sequences which should keep viewers engaged for the full runtime. Tom Hiddleston does a great job with Loki and gives us a convincing villain with a solid emotional backstory, Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye cameo is welcome in the film, and it’s both cool and intimidating to hear Anthony Hopkins growl as Odin. The movie takes Thor on a nice character arc which Hemsworth supplements well with his take on the character, and sets Thor up for future installments. However, the fault of this movie for me is the timeline. It takes place over only a few days, and its slightly unbelievable that Thor changes that much during that short span of time. Normally growth and personality changes take months and sometimes even years to occur, and yet Thor is able to that in just a few days. This movie would’ve felt more realistic if it had a time jump of a few months following Thor’s banishment to Earth to truly give the character time to have an arc. With that said, Thor overall is entertaining and engaging and remains a solid enough entry in the franchise. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I had been bingewatching all the MCU movies after the release of Infinity War, so that I could catch up before Endgame. This is the reason why I have a good hunch of which movies were very memorable and which ones were easily forgettable. This one here, however, comes under the same category as I'd put Guardians of the Galaxy under: It's memorable and forgettable at the same time. The only thing I remember from this movie is how awesome Loki was and Stan Lee's cameo appearance, but other than that, well, let's just say it all jumped over my head.

It's quite surprising to see how Thor has changed so much since the time we first saw him. Since I am writing this review 4 years after Thor: Ragnarok, I think my idea of Thor has changed a lot by now. Earlier I used to think Thor can never be an interesting character, thanks to this movie. But after seeing what Ragnarok, Infinity War and Endgame did to him, it seems the entire fault was of this movie's director. He made Thor a weird looking guy. Although there's no doubt everyone looks straightup ugly in this movie, the CGI is actually pretty good.

The story is pretty much straightforward: Thor has done a battle which he ruined because of his pompousness and so he has been banished on earth. His hammer has been put at some construction yard or something, and he's no longer worthy enough to lift it. It seems a lot like a copy of the first Assassin's Creed game, since there also Altaïr was the one whose post was stripped and he was sent back to the beginner's ranks. Meanwhile Loki found out he belonged to the enemy demon race and Odin had adopted him after killing his father. Loki teams up with those demons to attack Asgard.

The CGI, I'd admit, is pretty good. Every time I see the Asgard road I always feel like driving a sports car on it. Humans were really boring. All they did was talking, talking and more talking. This isn't something that one'd expect from MCU, and that's pretty obvious since MCU wasn't even decided until this point. But still there should have been a good tone. The twist in the end where Loki decided to save Odin and kill the monster after the monster mentioned Loki helped him was pretty good. I had always wanted a villain to do this: Don't leave yourself vulnerable after being exposed; try to defend yourself and show that the person is lying. And after Loki lost the battle, he pretended to commit suicide in order to show that he only wanted what he believed was justice.

Thor may have been a very forgettable movie, but I do remember it wasn't worth watching the second time. This movie made me fear that MCU could be boring in the future. It also ruined Thor's entire expectations for me. Throughout the movie I was only hoping it would end. The only reason I've given it a good rating is because of Loki, the CGI, and the way they were able to show Asgard's culture. Good movie, but a one time watch.

In concept, the storyline on Earth can be thematically interesting, but it loses focus and struggles to deliver. Thor was a somewhat enjoyable movie. The humor was good, as were the visuals. However, there wasn't a tone of action, the Asgard scenes were quite boring, and the pacing was uneven. Chris Hemsworth was solid as the lead hero, though.

Just the right combination of guts and spectacle balanced with passion and dynamic for the characters. Though still a popcorn film, Thor still delivers intelligent and thrilling writing.

I enjoyed this more than I expected, however when you compare it to the likes of Iron Man or Captain America the story feels noticeably weaker (as if maybe they didn't know what to do tonally with the characters/world?). Despite the odd flaws in tone and pacing there is much to enjoy here for even the most casual of mcu fans and makes a great intro for loki and thor in preparation for watching Avengers. Expand

So there is a place called AsgardThor from what I’ve seen is the most mixed movie in the mcu it’s either like it or hate it I’m in the majority that like it in fact it’s the first marvel movie I would consider good so let’s go over the plot. So there is a place called Asgard and the Ruler Odin tells his two sons Thor and Loki that one of them is worthy to be the ruler of Asgard we cut forward and were at the ceremony who Thor is crowned king until it’s interrupted by frost giants Thor is mad and convinces his friends and Loki to fight the dark elves Odin gets mad at Thor because he just started a war so Odin banishes him to earth with his hammer we then find out that Loki is a frost giant and is adopted with puts Odin in a coma type thing while on earth Thor runs into three scientists Jane, Darcy and Eric who study lightning and weather. Thor locates his hammer and tries to take it back but gets kidnapped by shield and escapes then on Asgard Loki releases a monster to earth which almost killed Thor but Odin cries and it gives Thor back his powers so he goes back to Asgard to defeat Loki but Loki commits suicide off the rainbow bridge and the movie ends. Similar story to iron man its rating went down over time as it was received fine by the public when it came out now people just realize how bad it is but I still think it holds up there are a lot of boring parts and I think some of the cg doesn’t hold up but I give the movie a solid 7/10 Expand

Kenneth Branagh ignores the romance between the siblings and the film suffers.

Thor

Branagh has a fluent zip in his vocab that can make even a tiresome script look easy. But then, there is always so much he can do. The script whose birth seems more like an obligation than passion can only go so far. The film is a set-up to the big upcoming ergo has very little to stand on.. well, anything. Not only does the script rely upon cliched scenarios with daft one liners, but the irrelevant action on steroids, that may match Hemsworth's behemoth figure, doesn't bode well to the storytelling.

To narrate a tale of hotheads is one thing, but you still have to make sense at times but in here, there are no elements or tactics that drives this rage which each character is brimmed of, nor there is any lines to be read between the scenes, in fact, I think there is barely any editing in here. Natalie Portman, as an intense workaholic scientist is surprisingly funny and light on her feet. From her body language- it is always fascinating to experience the change in energy in the room when Chris Hemsworth takes out his shirt- to her subtle innuendos of leaning towards the god like creature, is some of the pure delights that the film has to offer.

A tourist entering a new arena and trying to blend in on their culture, is the best aspect of Hemsworth's role; something that Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman too goes through, and against all odds he is simply funny. Tom Hiddleston as the jealous trickster breathes commercial cinema in his performance, he craves for those cheesy moments- a loud vein-popping yell or a half ominous grin on his face- and you know what, you still are going to enjoy it, such is his persona on screen that he appeals so eminently and yet they call it Thor.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This film's greatest strength is its visual art, particularly in the world of Asgard. The plot and characters are stereotypical, and the Asgardians' personalities border on self-parody. Perhaps that's what gives this film an air of silliness about it that lets me not take it as seriously as other MCU films expect me to take them. The dynamic between Loki and Thor is the linchpin of the film, despite an attempt to shoehorn in an unconvincing romance with Natalie Portman's character (guess I didn't get enough of that in Star Wars). The CGI is erratic... one moment stunning, and at the next moment having the finesse of a 90s made for TV tornado movie (Night of the Twisters I'm looking at you). There's a moment or two that are hard to swallow (like Thor's "sacrifice" against the iron giant), but the film is just cute enough for me to forgive it. It really is a bit of fun. Don't take it too seriously and you'll probably enjoy it. Some moments made me feel like I was watching some nerds at a comic book shop doing a LARP but to be honest I kind of enjoyed that. I was surprised by how much I liked the character Loki and am looking forward to how the story progresses in future films. Expand

I just personally don’t like Thor’s character, he’s just kinda boring for me. Other films rectify this but it isn’t really a good start for the character. Thor as a film has a weird feel, being a comic book super hero movie with high drama, sci-fi, and Norse fantasy, it just doesn’t mesh together well in this film. I do love the conflict between Thor and Loki that follows this film, but it does feel a bit forced. Otherwise the CGI looks good and the design and look of the worlds are great and refreshing in the greater MCU, especially at the time. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The first hammer throw of the Thunder God! The hammer-wielding and good-looking Thor in his first adventure in the MCU. Director Branagh passionately takes over the narrative style, from this comic book template. You can already see, however, that Branagh is a big Shakespeare fan. Almost monumental, he draws the figures of Thor, Odin or Loki. The city of Asgard is also more likely to come from Hamlet than Marvel. The story tells Branagh well and he also incorporates a lot of humour. For when Thor falls to earth, he has already lost the power of a God. It's not until the second half of the film that stands out. Therefore, it is amusing that the arrogant and beautiful Thor himself falls on the snout and remains equally entitled. Of course, Thor is the hero, so you have to disguise it that he is the same as a human being. He can still fight better and has more strength than three people combined.
In addition to Hemsworth as Thor, there are other confessed performers to his side. Natalie Portman gives the typical, chaotic scientist. While she's a bit cranky, she makes her likeable alongside the overpowering heroes. Stellan Skaarsgard is an old professor who is more than a father figure to Portman. And, of course, Anthony Hopkins as Konigsgott Odin, who still brings a bit of sparkle to this hero saga. Narratively and visually, Branagh has managed not to straddle the adventure on torture for long. You look at it to the performers, which was fun. But among the other Marvel heroes, Thor remains rather weak in content. Although Thor is like that, everything remains self-evident and remains superficial. Conclusion: A colorful adventure that is told briskly. Only character drawing is left behind!

The Good:
- Chris Hemsworth IS Thor. He's pretty much perfect for the role.
- Sets up Asgard well for future MCU movies, and visually it looks fantastic. - Has some nice character progression for Thor; shows him grow into the superhero he needs to be for the MCU. - The Loki and Thor sibling rivalry is very believable and very well done. This film also sets up Loki as one of the MCU's most formidable villains. The Bad: - The pacing in Thor is never very good. The beginning sets up an intriguing world but then Thor is banished to Earth where he runs around without his powers for a while, and the characters he interacts with are nothing special. It essentially slows down to a crawl and struggles to find its feet for the final act. - The final "boss battle" was incredibly disappointing. - For a superhero film, Thor feels very bland throughout. There is not much excitement and little actual fun to be had. This is essentially a set-up movie that fits well in the grand scheme of the MCU, but isn't that great on its own.
