Oil as a symbol of wealth, and wealth as a symbol of all evils. Daniel Day Lewis in a memorable role, showing the moral decline of a man who rose to prosperity in almost the course of one night.

It has clear austere cinematography and crisp sound engineering and plays with those strengths rather well as shown in the opening scenes black oil shots within the cave or H.W deafness. Paul Thomas Anderson is incomparable with his direction, detailed and authentic yo a point of non fiction. An analysis of the allure and trappings of greed and ambition, set near a time where such egotism would collide with post war optimism into a cataclysmic stock market crash. It's script is bare in that it doesn't try to say much and places most effort on the subtleties of the actors body language. Daniel Day Lewis is a centerpiece in this drama and captivates with a demure grandeur that constantly feels on the verge of madness, until the epic moment it finally gives way. Paul Dano is nondescript in his duel performance as twins Eli & Paul. Eli simmers with a madness anchored in religious self righteousness that casts a condescending veil of ego that corrodes against the thinning sanity of Daniel Plainview closing the movie is a bloody pulp. Watching these perspective spirals leaves you breathless not out of sympathy, I don't think anyone of the characters inspire that kind of attachment, but out of apprehension. Expand

In fact I would go as far to say it is one of the best of the last decade. Visually, it is stunning, I loved the skillful cinematography and shots and the scenery was amazing. Jonny Greenwood's music is atmospheric and haunting as well, the script is lyrical, hysterical and sometimes even baffling, the story is excellent and thematically rich and the pace is fine, quite slow but deliberately so.

There Will be Blood is brilliantly directed by Paul Thomas Anderson and the characters are intriguing. In fact to me the character of Daniel Plainview makes the movie. Magnificently portrayed by Daniel Day Lewis, he is quite complex- while monstrous and cold-hearted, because of his love for his adopted son I wouldn't necessarily call him completely evil either. Paul Dano also does a fine job as Eli Sunday.

Overall, a truly fine film and one of the best of the last decade in my view. 10/10 Bethany Cox

It really felt quite claustrophobic in parts with the low key yet somewhat spooky soundtrack, with heavy use of stringed instruments and low beat drumming creating a very tense feel at key points. Also featured are elements of one up manship, highlighting the competitive aspects of bidding for oil and as well as this, religion strongly plays a part, when a man dies in an accident while down one of the wells, a local priest come supposed healer warns that it could have been avoided, had the well been allowed to be given a simple blessing but he's told that this would have only slowed down the process of extracting the oil, so it was never going to be allowed. He also mentions having seen some of the men involved drinking, stating that it can't be a good idea when they need to be alert on site but again his worries are overlooked. Things get particularly heated as the plot develops and I couldn't help feeling sorry for him.

Paranoia also plays a part and I have to say it is a pretty gritty watch in parts, seeing how various characters react to set situations, getting an idea of how they interpret things as they see it, often (presumably) in a much different way to the way we'd see things. Its quite sad to see the toll thats paid in different forms, what such people went through but I suppose it has to be remembered that there was more poverty in those days - this being set in the past of course, it having quite a rural Wild West type feel to it. I suppose it is a case of every man for his own (hence the element of paranoia present), so that would make sense. Given the motives and even actions of the main cast, you'd be forgiven for thinking their pretty selfish and not especially caring but after another accident occurs, Daniels emotions really come in to play and he's faced with a tough decision, having to play different roles as a parent and a prospctor or site manager I suppose - anyway, his more caring nature is brought out. This makes it a more interesting watch, as I always find it difficult to stay keen on a movie that goes on for a long time when the characters don't appear to be particularly likeable.

I found this quite engrossing and atmospheric, almost too much so, being quite claustrophobic due to the camerawork (some quick changes of shot and interesting angles used at times) and the sinister score playing in the background. Among the spookiest and perhaps most atmospheric scenes, are those of Daniel and a previously unknown acquaintance he gives the benefit of the doubt to, who spend time together alone, the spookiest scenes being set at a campfire and indeed fire is very much present throughout the movie, in different scenes.

There was some interesting dialogue in this movie, although it could be seen to be a little bit bland in parts. The scenes involving the healer carrying out ceremonies in a local makeshift church are quite moving - indeed at first you'd think the locals mock the idea of religion but later on it becomes clear that those in need of healing rely on that as a form of obviously hope to them. Given the plot that develops, its quite a bleak movie but I liked how the different characters, family members and others adapted - things do change in time but I wouldn't call it necessarily a very Hollywood movie in the classical sense of that term.

The character portrayals really made this what it is - if the script was different or performances perhaps more wooden then it would be different but as it is, I thought this was a quality movie.

Just to add that cast and content wise, first off content - of course there's moderate violence present, quite bloody violence at times and there's also strong language present, as well as perhaps one or two sexual references but thats about all I can think of thats probably worth mentioning. Onto the cast, which give very good performances and Daniel Day-Lewis plays the main character, Daniel Plainview - coming across as a stern, no nonsense man who at times also isn't afraid to show his deeper side when battling emotions, while Paul Dano plays the religious healer, Eli Sunday. He seems quite plain by way of physical appearance but becomes very animated in certain scenes and the interaction between both of these key members of cast as their relevant characters, works well.

This film is superb. The first 15 minutes are a homage to silent cinema while the remaining two hours are reminiscent of the Westerns of the gold diggers like John Houston's ones. But this film is much more than that. It is the most beautiful film ever created on the relationship between church and capitalism and it is an understatement to call it an absolute masterpiece. Daniel Day Lewis here gives the greatest performance that an actor has ever given in the history of cinema. Everything is so perfect in this film that a 10/10 rating can't be enough. I bought this dvd like 10 years ago, and I did not watch it completely.
The reason was that I found it too long, two and half hours, with not much interesting scenes and dialogues.
But somehow, Daniel character clung on my head.
And in recent years my interest in Psychology grow huge.
Then I wanted to re-watch it.
And that was a perfect judgement.

The reason for that is that Daniel character represents the modern personality sickness in a so subtle form.
- He wants to be rich more than anyone around him, and he does not want to deal with anybody.
- He does not give a damn about people. They are just tools, means for him to reach his own goals.
- He hates everyone.
- He is angry inside.
- He is envious inside.
- He believes everyone can be manipulated.
- He does not have a faith, but he can be Christian, can be Muslim, or a Jew at a finger snap, no problem.
- Same goes in politics, he can be leftist, rightist, feminist, environmentalist, communist, BLMist, racist.. you name it..
Bottom line is that whatever he choose to be should be serving his grandiosity among others.
- But in the mean time he wants to love people, and to be loved. Deep inside he is empty, longing for all those feelings.

He wants to fill his emptiness with a normal human being, but that is something he can not do it.
That is not his nature, so he is in a continues suffering state.

Another great sphere of the movie is that you hardly notice these personality traits on Daniel for the first half of the movie.
And this is exactly about these psychos in reality; deception.

In the first half of the movie, Daniel appears like a poor countryman man striving to be a self made millionaire.
But his dialogues, his facial gestures, his body language are so subtle in presenting the modern psychopath I described above.
Daniel starts his own oil drilling adventures in late 19th century in New Mexico.
One of his workers dies in an accident. And he adapts his son, H. W.
Daniel is also single.
Viewer feels the oddness of this adaptation because Daniel is not type of man who has empathy, care for anyone.
I think this is one of the best part of the story, because viewer is always kept in a suspicion on true character of Daniel.
And answer to this adaptation comes at the end of the movie, may be in the best scene, and dialogue of the movie.
It is the best articulation of the Daniel's psychopath.

Movie goes on with Daniels rising about his Oil business together H. W. by buying some poor and religious farmers' land in California.
Although movie concentrated on Daniel, in my view, it takes a twist after half of it concentrating on preacher of the village church, Eli.
Eli is the son of the farmer from whom Daniel bought the land.
Eli asks for money for the church, he wants to have a bigger, better church.
Though Daniel hates Eli's money ripping of him for Church, he still does all those payments.
Even in in his dealings with Christian farmers, he comes to a point he gets baptised and confesses his sins.
Deception is his normal part of life.

But movie, portrays the Eli no less deceptive and sick than Daniel.
This Paradoxical appearance of sick minds of Daniel, and the Preacher is so captivating..
It is a social paradox between "good" and "evil".
And both are suffering inside themselves, their paradoxical sick personalities.

Both characters of Daniel, and Eli dominates the movie.
Daniel Plainview, and Paul Dano casting these characters are magnificent.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. There Will Be Blood is a brilliant character study which tells a true story of how greed can corrupt one's soil. Set in the early 20th century, it depicts oilman Daniel Plainview's relentless quest for wealth, and how this quest for wealth eventually changes him for the worst. This movie is more of a slow burner, but the pace fits well for the story which it tells. One doesn't simply become a soulless capitalist overnight; Plainview's moral decline plays out over the course of nearly three decades. Despite the movie's slow pace, it will still absorb you with its compelling story, as well as with Daniel Day-Lewis' scintillating performance as the merciless oilman. Paul Dano also shines as the charismatic preacher, Eli, who buts heads with Plainview. The technical aspects of this film are brilliant as well. The soundtrack is quite fitting, and the cinematography is captivating too. Overall, There Will Be Blood is undoubtedly a masterpiece. Expand

This is one of those films that garners so much praise because people are afraid to admit they dont get it. Here's the thing though, there's nothing here to get. It's such a surface level movie masquerading as this masterpiece. It's showing the transitional focus of America going from a culture that over values religion to one that over values wealth and power. The performances given in the film are top notch and everyone really does a fantastic job at delivering what they're supposed to. This however, doesn't make the films plot any better. It comes off as a disjointed tale of episodes that loosy connect showing that the character has no progression. If you want to call his slip is into further anger character development then sure he "evolves" but, both the main character and ellie are the same people with the same agenda the whole movie. Don't feel bad if you're watching the film thinking "I just dont get it". The message is so blunt and ham fisted, its not you it's the poor script. "Religion is bad, Capitalism is bad". But the reality is anything without boundaries or that pushes to the unrealistic levels of extremism demonstrated in this movie are ridiculous. They're pushed so hard the characters become caricatures instead. Lastly, the movie tries so hard to harken back to 1960 in style and feel but really doesn't even compare to the classics it aspires to be. This film isn't the revolutionary piece of art is thinks it is and frankly its not fun or exciting to watch. Expand

However, I am wrongfully going to ignore that, to praise Daniel Day-Lewis. This, in my opinion, is the greatest performance of all time. I have agonised for years, obsessing about what actor in history was the best in a single movie. There are others that are equally perfect, Brando in On the Waterfront (1954), Nicholson in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975), Ledger in The Dark Knight (2008), De Niro in Raging Bull (1980), Hopkins in Silence of the Lambs (1991), Pacino in The Godfather (1972), Spacey in American Beauty (1999), Streep in Sophie's Choice (1982), Peck in To Kill a Mockingbird (1962), Olivier in Hamlet (1948), the list goes on... However, no role has required the same level of character transformation and method acting that DDL did as Daniel Plainview. This was a masterpiece in creating nuances, changing speech and inflections, body language and raw acting ability. Day-Lewis is a chameleon that somehow completely morphed himself into another individual, especially one as complex and unique as this one. He stands as one of the best actors of all time with the likes of Nicholson and Brando. Expand

This film tells the story of an oil prospector who finds a huge deposit in unpromising region. Directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, which also provides the script, the film stars Daniel Day-Lewis and Paul Dano.

This is one of the most pessimistic films I've seen. The whole film's atmosphere is dark and negative, showing the saga of Daniel Plainview (Day-Lewis), who enriches after discovering oil in the lands next to a farm which belongs to Eli (Paul Dano), one wanabe- pastor with baby face from an evangelical cult. This film has no good guys or bad guys, is a vast gray area and wickedness is on everyone's mind. Plainview is obsessed with profits; Eli is a fanatical who mistreats the family and controls a congregation with an iron fist. Its the confrontation between these two men, with antagonistic visions and wills, which justifies the film title.

The two main actors did an exceptional job. Both are odious in their roles, the way they show to be bad people trying to look a certain hypocritical seriousness in their daily actions. Day-Lewis, however, is too similar with some characters who have starred in past films like "Gangs of New York" (and I refer to physical likeness and make- up, of course). Dillon Freasier also made a good performance in the role of HW, the little deaf child of Plainview. The costumes and sets goes well in the context of time and place of the action. The cinematography, dark and misty, combines harmoniously with the gloomy atmosphere of the film, and a deeply depressed soundtrack (written by Jonny Greenwood), very atonal, who perfectly embodies the visible (or implied) cruelty of this film.

The only reasons why this film is not perfect for me, despite the fact of giving it a 10, is because it has problems with the rhythm and considering its length it becomes a bit heavy.
And although Daniel Day-Lewis is spectacular, his performance in several moments feels like an extension of Bill The Butcher of Gangs from New York. Those are pretty much the only issues I have with the film.

Daniel Day-Lewis was given an entire year to prepare for the role of Daniel Plainview and it shows. Even more incredible is the fact that Paul Dano was given just 4 days (!) to prepare for his breakout role as Eli Sunday after he was originally cast to just play the smaller part of Paul Sunday (the script was quickly re-written to make the brothers twins so that Dano could pull double duty). While the Oscar for Day-Lewis' performance is a no-brainer, the other--for cinematography--is actually quite debatable. Sure, the Texas locations and landscapes were quite remarkable, but there were also plenty of times when the images on the screen were unnecessarily dark. I would've preferred if the film won the Oscar for best sound editing (for which it was indeed nominated) as the use of sound--including distinct moments of silence--heightened the overall viewing experience to an even greater degree. Everything about this movie is perfect: its scoring, its acting, and its thematic implications that shake up the mainstream view of America's favorite pastime: capitalism. As an epic, there will be blood is dripping with innovative ideas about the clash between religion and capitalism and the fine line that separates idealism from greed.
But as a character study, it's flawed. In fact there will be blood just doesn't work as a character study. We learn so much about who Daniel Plainview is but virtually nothing about why. From his initial hatred of humanity to his final descent into loner hell, we’re never given an understanding as to what’s behind it all. Early in the film, he seems like a rapacious capitalist. Then we begin to see him as more malicious and cruel. Then we come to see him as a raving lunatic. He works hard for reasons that are never explained- seemingly uninterested in pleasing God through his diligence or even himself for that matter. And the more I think about it, the more I begin to realise how severe this problem is. It doesn't just limit the character's impact, it greatly undermines Plainview's relationship with his son. He seems to love the boy, at times, a bit. Yet he also exploits the boy for his own purposes. He seems to feel guilty when being a rotten father, but is uncomfortable with the consequences of affectionate feelings. It just doesn't add up. I guess what I'm saying is we never get to see the humanity in Daniel Plainview or lack of humanity in him.
But I give it 7/10 because when the film works it really works.

Greenwood's soundtrack; particularly 'The Prospectors' is majestic. Thomas Andersen does a superb job exploiting the gorgeous scenery as well as the zoom in shot of the well, way beyond his years of experience. If I had to be hypercritical, I would suggest to things:
-Despite the original beginning with no dialogue, the movie was a little slow
-The lack of a strong female character (more to do with the story maybe?)
Overall, an excellent movie, a classic if not quite a masterpiece.

Sure, there is no direct story, but what we are seeing is so much bigger than that. The interaction of every character and the constant "peeling back of the onion" that is Daniel Plainview and how evil he truly is make up for any story people may be searching for. Paul Thomas Anderson's epic masterpieceThe closing sequence delivers on the promise of the movie's title in a manner that keeps viewers discussing it long after the picture ends. “There Will Be Blood” is not a movie that disappears quietly. Paul Thomas Anderson's epic masterpiece "There will be Blood" is a steadfast reflection of the very essence of capitalism in America, where domination, not gain, is the ultimate objective, and by any means necessary.

When we first meet Daniel Plainview (Daniel Day-Lewis) in 1898, he's mining for gold in a shaft he has dug into the ground of his Texas property. He finds what he's looking for, and perhaps more. Several years later, he has shifted his focus from gold to oil and he has been able to hire some hands. When an accident results in a death, Daniel finds himself with an infant orphan to care for. He raises the child, known as H.W., to be his own. By 1912, Daniel has become a well-known oilman, and he his looking to expand his empire. Accompanied by his partner, Fletcher (Ciarán Hinds), and his son (Dillon Freasier), he travels to California to follow a promising lead. What he finds there astonishes him. He seeks to buy large parcels of property, but he is impeded in his goal by the evangelist preacher Eli Sunday (Paul Dano), who wants Daniel to donate $10,000 to the local church before he sells. After the contract is signed, however, Daniel reneges on the deal. Shortly thereafter, once the first drill has become operational, there is an accident that results in an explosion that fuels a major oil fire and costs H.W. his hearing.

For most of the film, Daniel is a fascinating character. He's a mass of contradictions: charismatic, ugly, easygoing, ruthless, silver-tongued, plain-spoken, gentle, violent. He's smart and understands how to manipulate every situation to his advantage. He understands the business of oil and transforms himself from a poor miner into a wealthy businessman. Unfortunately, the more power Daniel amasses, the more corrupt and dissolute he becomes. Anderson chronicles Daniel's personality decay intelligently. He establishes the character as an admirable individual, but eventually his morality slowly erodes. The lives of these two, Daniel and Eli, are self-centered, cunning, and ruthless men who collide and lead us into the dark, unpaved path of madness of self-destruction driven by their unrelenting greed.

“There Will Be Blood” is a rich character study of a fascinating individual who is by turns likable, loathsome, admirable, monstrous, and driven. What Day-Lewis brings to the characterization is more exquisite and complex than anything even Anderson might have imagined at the outset. His Plainview is the most gripping film performance of the year, and as his religious foil, Dano also reveals unsuspected depths. Long, but so well crafted with terrific cinematography, and beautifully written/directed by Paul Thomas Anderson. Daniel Day-Lewis and Robert Elswit both earned Academy Awards.

For me, it's Anderson's best, and one of the best films of recent years, because it combines realism (which some people mistake for lack of plot) with intensity, action with meditation, and amazing performances and settings. Jonny Greenwood contributes a haunting but earthy score, whose rawness often plays off the characteristic intensity of Day-Lewis' antiheroic protagonist. He was so real and convincing, every moment was just perfect. A good performance by Paul Dano as well, especially in the church scenes and the final scene. I was hesitant to watch this movie because I've heard so many bad things about it, that it's too long, boring, and that it's pointless. I just have one thing to say, and that is this is a masterpiece. By far the best movie of 2007, and one of the best of our time. My favorite scene in the entire film is the last scene, it really puts it all into perspective. This is a brilliant movie, you absolutely must NOT miss it. Expand

Day Lewis kills. Bit by bit, he shapes There Will Be Blood into a masterpiece. The shades and story is tedious and slow but wait and see the drama and excitement you are in for.

This movie is a bit on the long side, but overall it is a really enjoyable story to follow. A class drama. Especially the ending takes the cake! I'm finished.

There Will Be Blood tells the ultimate disaster of one man's mission to be the best at what he does, and discard anything that gets in his way.
Daniel Day-Lewis puts in one of the greatest and most memorable performances of any actor or actress in the last few decades, his wispy and dominating voice truly capture the ruthless and maniacal means boiling beneath the surface, he is the 'oilman' Daniel Plainview, and he gets what he wants.
The film opens with very little dialogue, we watch Plainview, alone and down a well, digging for oil, his perseverance and can-do attitude are apparent as he breaks his leg in a fall, but manages to get out of the well and start over again.
Plainview and his son, HW, coax towns into letting them dig up their land in the search for oil, and when he is approached into a town with the potential of riches beyond measure, he is met with the bizarre and erratic Eli Sunday (Paul Dano), a preacher who ends up being at egotistical loggerheads with Plainview about his faith and his intentions with the town.
After a tragic accident, Plainviews behaviour drastically changes and ulterior motive soon come to light, wanting to have so much money that he would no longer have to know people. The addition of his half-brother perhaps shows a more humanly side to him, but he seems determined and forthright to get what he wants, eventually falling into obsessive and alcohol-fuelled madness.
An epic tale which is never without its drama, There Will Be Blood never fails to impress in its acting, writing and visual landscapes of beauty, filming in the same place as No Country for Old Men, the similarities in film style.
But of course it is the thrilling characters that truly make this film what it is, Plainview has flashes of Citizen Kane in his determination for everything, but ultimately loneliness at what he has become.
The film has styles of long scenes and plenty of dialogue, but what truly needs to be seen is the characters who bring these scenes to life, the ambition of Paul Thomas Anderson could indeed have been a hit or miss but what he has created is something unique.
The often debated ending has been the subject of many talks, particularly peoples distaste for it, but as the film goes on its difficult to imagine another finish, other than the madness within.
A truly remarkable film that never ceases to amaze in its character development, expert writing and ambitious reach that could very well be the best film in the last fifteen years. Taking it from its remarkable perch could indeed be a difficult thing.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This films started off well, but once we've seen how Plainview (Day-Lewis) set up the business and his early difficulties in buying land to drill for oil that the film starts to take a nose dive. First of all, there is little to no character development we learn nothing about Plainview's work force, his son (who turns out not to be his son) is only developed very slightly towards the end. There are also a few things that don't make any sense i.e when Plainview abandons the boy on the train. He is returned back to Plainview later in the film, but where had he been? Where did they find him? How long had he been gone for? None of this is explained. I also felt the ending was over the top. I gave it 4 mainly because it started out well and Day-Lewis put in a good performance (not Oscar worthy though). I also thought the guy who played Eli put on a good performance too. Expand

It's original, intense and pretty much perfect in every way. You can feel Anderson's engagement with his subject matter and his passion for the work. You don't feel that sense of disengagement like you do with most empty Hollywood films. This is cinema at it's best, a disturbing portrayal of human nature and the effect of power. I'm just grateful that we still have at least one brilliant Director left in the world. Expand

Where to start, on the first viewing There Will Be Blood has comfortably become one of my favourite films of all time. From the dialogue-free 15 minute opening of Plainview mining alone, to the intense and violent conclusion, There Will BeWhere to start, on the first viewing There Will Be Blood has comfortably become one of my favourite films of all time. From the dialogue-free 15 minute opening of Plainview mining alone, to the intense and violent conclusion, There Will Be Blood is unrelenting. You cannot take your eyes off Daniel Day-Lewis. He is quite simply fantastic as the fiery, vengeful and driven oilman and deserved his Plainview becomes so dislikeable he is likeable, and I found myself routing for him, after all he is the film. The scenes between pastor Eli and Daniel, in particular the two where each humiliates the other, are worth the price of admission alone.

Maybe I'm biased, maybe Daniel Day-Lewis is one of my favourite actors, maybe because I work in the oil industry the film's subject appeals to me more, maybe great shots of drilling derricks and flaming oil gushers set against the American West just do it for me. Or maybe not, maybe Paul Thomas Anderson has just created a truly great film, full of memorable images and lines. Although central to the film, the themes of religion and capitalism are allowed to exist without heavy handed interference from Anderson. Ultimately, neither come out of the other side smelling of roses.

The reason this film only scores 9/10 is due to the score. Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood is responsible for the score which Tarantino complimented as "one of the great modern original soundtracks of the last decade" but it just didn't agree with me.

This movie was a classic depiction of the great storytelling of Paul Tom Anderson with incredible acting by Day-Lewis. It was an independent joy ride through the life of an oil man. A visual and written masterpiece.

It was just long, unfocused, and forgettable. The main character was not a real stretch in acting chops for Day-Lewis, and trivial parts were carried out for absurd lengths of time. Visually and in thematic details, it DID ring of some real truths and passions, which alone would make it standout against most Hollywood fare, but unless you are dedicated to odd stuff, you will definitely find it a mediocre entertainment. This deep, brooding portrayal of a man motivated only by greed is a haunting movie that will both terrify and amaze you. I needn't say, Daniel Day-Lewis delivers one of the best performances of all time as Daniel Plainview.
