total waste of time / money. This movie was sold as a terror film, but it is not. So much ads and stuff to sell this movie. Please do not watch.
I felt very disapointed after watching it.

I still can't believe I viewed the same film that got such rave reviews. When the end credits started rolling, my date in I looked at each other with a WTF look on our face. Not much of a story. One of the worst movies I've ever seen.

Within a few moments of this film i guess you can say beginning( i do not know if i am the only one who noticed but i dont remember seeing opening credits) there was no plot, no flow, just scene after scene, nothing made sense at all. I do not recommend seeing this film ever! What saddens me is how this film was rated better than star wars, like seriously? There are no words for how confused i am right now. When I was younger my friends and I had a rule that if a critic gave a movie a 4 out of 4 star rating, it was a artsy movie only a movie critic would enjoy. The Witch is that type of movie. It is a period piece, maybe back to the pilgrimWhen I was younger my friends and I had a rule that if a critic gave a movie a 4 out of 4 star rating, it was a artsy movie only a movie critic would enjoy. The Witch is that type of movie. It is a period piece, maybe back to the pilgrim days, and sometimes the dialogue gets confusing in trying to keep the movie authentic to that period. These are harden religious people and they talk the talk with everything they do. With that said, some of what is said is lost on me. If I had a DVR, I would have rewound it several times just to try and figure out what was being said. While this might be a problem, it really isn't because you get the idea of what is happening. It just happens at a pace that is turtle-like. You are not really sure where they are going with any of it, and even when it ends abruptly, you have to ask yourself, WTF?

I love creative movies, and this movie is creative, but it really fails as a horror movie for a real horror movie fan. The only thing that is creepy is the 2 young kids and a bunny. I am not sure that was the intention, but that was the way it came across. If you really want to see it, then wait a few months until it is available online or through Netflix or Amazon. Save your money.

Those movies were both scary and entertaining. I had to keep elbowing my wife as she kept falling asleep. The opening scene was promising, after that I kept hoping for more but was utterly dissappointed throughout. Halfway through the move there was another small scene that offered some glittering hope and that was it. The acting, backdrop, cinematography and costumes were great, but the story just wasn't there. After the credits rolled I heard some from the audience say "yes, thank god it's over". Expand

I expected that from ignorant people from 300 or whatever years ago, but why are they still crazy today?" I hate that no character in this movie is active. They glide from crisis to crisis being pushed along and never try to do anything or learn anything. They are consistent with their faith though: If everyone is a sinner, when the s**t hits the fan, they mistrust everyone, including their loved ones. I found the end a surprise, but basically silly. It wasnt so much scary as it was unsettling for me, which wasnt a problem its a very fresh movie putting itself away from all the horror's you find now. It was a very dark, slow, tense movie, so for all of you wanting a very fast paced "jump scare around every corner" fest, you wont find that here. Thats not to say this movie wasnt scary it kept you on the edge of your seat but instead of you jumping out of it, its more you stay at the edge for the whole movie. The only major problem I had was the very Shakespeareish dialogue, but, that should not stop you from going to watch this as that is really just a personal problem rather then having to do with the movie itself, it was very true to the time it was based. If you are looking for a movie that has great acting, great story, great filming ( the locations are great), very well put together characters, and a good gruesome, unsettling movie this is one for you! It's not really a horror movie as it was marketed, although some of the scenes are brutal to witness. It's well acted, moody, beautifully shot, and subdued. It's a very adult movie which is why I think it's got such pushback from the horror community. The shame of the film is that it was marketed as something it's not. At least for this viewer, the constant sense of fear and tension that means a good horror movie was lacking. All in all, VERY worth watching, but not as advertised. Expand

This movie made me feel so uncomfortable. Creepiness is off the charts. Not for everyone, but I kept wishing it to end so I wouldn't have to see what happened next. Chilled me to the bone.

Great date movie if you want to scare the crap out of your lady but make sure she's strong beforehand or she might have a heart attack.

Loved it, it's why the term "nightmare fuel" exists. Remember how you saw Million Dollar Baby and you thought "That was a great movie, but I never want to watch that again because it's so depressing."? The Witch is like that except I never want to see it again because it scared the poo out of me.

That said, I think I want to see this again. So much so that I'm writing my first review. It's not for people with no attention spans, kind of like The Exorcist, but this has far better pacing and stabs your psyche even more deeply. I was so creeped out that I almost started to pray for it to be over with, despite being an atheist. Just to be safe, I did the Son/Father/Holy Ghost gesture thing to purify my own damn eyes at the end.

Speaking of the end, it ended, and everyone in the theater just sat in silence, motionless for a while. It took us a while to get back to reality, because it felt like we were in this horror, which was the director's view. Can't wait to see more from him.

So watch it if you don't have ADD, like getting creeped out, and are not afraid of pooping your own pants.

Some of these critics are calling it "terrifying" and "a classic!" That's a joke. I was bored for most of this sucker, and the dialogue was completely unintelligible about half the time, which is a problem when there's very little action. This was touted as an acclaimed wide release horror film - man, I had a much better time with the horror indie Southbound that I saw last weekend. So yeah, the oldest daughter had presence and her acting performance is solid, but the movie sets a major trap for itself and proceeds to fall right into it. Believe me, this is a film should AVOID. It is just Blair Witch Project meets The Exorcist. The look of the film is ultracheap, as though it had been shot on a budget of less than $100,000. Worse still is that you will miss at least two-thirds of the dialogue, since it is mostly whispered in a weird, made-up dialect that has been poorly recorded. The film is being pitched as true-to-life, based on actual folk tales. But the resulting mash-up is pointless -- other than to provide diabolically gruesome scenes of death. With an 83 critical rating, I would say it is the most overrated film ever to appear on this list. It really does STINK. No kidding. Expand

It's actually a period drama/thriller that's very entrenched in the puritan movement to USA in the early 16th century. If this time period doesn't entice you, or you find it hard to relate to other cultures, you'll find the film thoroughly uninteresting. If however you can enjoy something a bit different, there's great acting, good tension, and some shocking scenes in this film that will mean it'll have some lasting value at least. I often chuckled to myself during many scenes and the acting was so damn corny! Yes I get that they're in the 17th century, but it still felt so forced! Almost nothing happens for the entire film and for the few scenes where something does happen, it simply involves the characters praying, yelling at each other, or trying to kill each other. As for the ending, with many films it can either make or break the film. I'm sure you can all guess which scenario this film's ending followed. Overall, I have to agree with the many others who have been saying that this film is this year's It Follows. Both are terrible, overhyped, non-scary films and that's that! Expand

I took my buddy to see it and told him what I heard and were looking forward to it for months. I read that it had slow pacing and that might not jive with everyone but I don't mind long movies so I disregarded it. Now before I bash this film, I understand why some people find some horror movies scary, whether it's a Saw type movie with its gore, a cheap pop-up scare horror, an old school slasher, or my least favorite psychological horror with social theme undertones (like the babadook which I disliked) But back to The Witch, I felt that it was a very well made movie from the acting, filming, ambiance and even that they apparently stayed true to whatever folk tale that inspired this movie. But it just was not scary. Most movies have some kind of moral or message or some type of closure. This movie left me and my pal with none of that, instead it had one jump scare with a witches hand, and finally ended with a "what the hell is this" ending. The story itself, whether it losing its scare-value from being a in a modern world, just wasn't scary. If you see this film, you'll have to appreciate it for everything else and not expect a movie that's going to scare you senseless. Expand

If you're looking for a high quality horror movie, move along. This movie drags on and on and on. I found myself looking at my watch more often than the movie.

The actors are great, but the script is awful. By the time it finally gets interesting, there's only 20 minutes left in the movie and most people have already lost interest.

There's nothing "new" with this movie, it relies on old witch stereotypes that have been done a hundred different times.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A remarkably bad movie that appears to be a critical darling. I went to see it with my girlfriend. We hated it. So far as we could tell few, if anybody, else in the theatre enjoyed it, either.

If you (spoiler) are okay seeing a baby getting cut up and smeared on the body of a woman (or seeing a pet dog with its guts showing) then perhaps you'll find the movie more acceptable. But more than just offensive, the movie somehow managed to be horrendously bad despite excellent acting and direction.

I didn't find the movie to be scary, either. But YMMV.

Rule #1: Don't show the creepiest/scariest/most shocking thing in the first 20 minutes of the movie or everything else won't seem as scary. Sure it was unsettling throughout, but because Rule #1 was violated, there is a gradual feeling of disappointment and diminished interest. There is an art or at least a formula to doling out scares in horror movies and The Witch doesn't abide by it, frustratingly suffering as a result. The story is painfully linear yet still confusing. I'll give it points for trying something new with the genre, but it could have been a lot better. Expand

You could say I'm being a bit harsh, but I can say that the director's vision and imagery for this film was great. The art style and language of the film really helped with it being in the 1600's, and that sadly doesn't do justice for me. Yes I may be a big horror nut, but this film didn't pack a punch as far as being "scary" or "frightening". It did have some disturbing images and the whole wrap up of it all didn't feel quite like the resolution to the film. That is why I gave it the rating I did. Expand

They were all hyped as the hot new horror film and I found them to be dismal disappointments. Call me old fashioned, but I like my horror films to be scary. This one is steeped in an interesting period setting (New England, 1630) and drowned in an ominous soundtrack, but the creepy pace and lame shocks don’t make it remotely riveting. A farmer and his family set out on their own, only to be haunted by an unknown evil. True, it’s a compelling concept, but it also lacks any suspense. It doesn’t help that much of the “thee” and “hither” dialect is hard to follow. This is more a period drama in the vein of Miller’s THE CRUCIBLE or one of those Japanese ghost movies, neither of which is ever frightening. (Harvey Scrimshaw as the young son makes an impressive debut). Expand

The Witch is very much a parable of human cruelty. How simple ignorance and fear can bring out people's worst qualities. It also stands as a stunning recreation of a past era.

From the way the dialog is written to the attention to detail in the costumes and setting, the colonial era has been masterfully brought to life onscreen. The acting is perfect and the story is bleak and moody. An excellent soundtrack sets the tone. The beautiful way the movie is shot and handled make it part art film. The plot touches on themes like religious intolerance and the potential danger religion could have on the weak minded.

It captures the effects a constant struggle to control one's "sinful nature" can have on a person's sanity. One of the movie's biggest aspects is the time period it's set in. It's depiction of the people of that era's struggle to constantly subdue themselves and their incredible fear that simply slipping up in some way would lead God to cast them into hell is powerful.

Yet, for all it's themes and messages this horror movie has one key flaw that almost sinks the whole thing; it's just not scary. Dark and affecting, yes, just not scary. I get that the real horror comes from the undertones as opposed to what is on the surface, and it certainly is a grim affair, but never once no matter how I looked under the surface of the events was I faced with any sense of fear. A darn shame for a horror film that succeeds so well in just about every other aspect.

The Witch is still worth watching though. Perhaps not for those looking for big thrills and chills like you would see in horror films like Sinister or the Insidious series as this is a remarkably slow and silent film by comparison. It's not one to watch in order to be terrified. It's one you want to watch to see the genre at it's most original. You can pull a lot from the tone, atmosphere, and connotations. The movie is just as much about this family's inner struggle as it is their outer one. Maybe even more so. However no matter what you pull from it, none of it is really scary. More haunting. As a result it's successful as a mature, artistic horror film, but not one that will keep you up at night, no matter how sinister and true to life it's themes may be.

The pluses: scenery, acting, atmosphere. Downsides: lack of any meaningful story or bringing some kind of conclusion or meaning to dialogues or things that happen in the story.

Now I get that the movie contains some hidden contexts that may be caught on by attentive viewer. I think that some people may be satisfied by "getting" one or two hints. For me it was not enough. I just cannot get past the nonexistent story. I felt as if I can fast forward and start watching the movie from any point without missing much.

But ultimately this is a weird one. If you want to watch this movie several times and scan for hints of things happening you will like it. If you are into nice camera shots of nature and if you want to see good actors expressing emotions and playing their given role well you will be satisfied. If you expect good story or some character development you will not get what you want.

However, with the disappearance of the eldest brother, Caleb, the film begins to cast its spell. Full of disturbing imagery and rich in atmosphere and authentic period detail, the story becomes intermittently compelling. There are some great directorial touches and impressive visual flourishes woven into the film’s biggest asset, its cinematography. Performances are solid, but there is no denying that the ending is unsatisfactorily ambiguous, leaving, as it does, too many questions unanswered. Expand

This movie was billed as something along the "scariest movie in decades" or something along those lines and it failed to deliver on what was to be its top selling point. I can sense the atmosphere in the film as it feels creepy and at times, thought provoking and visceral thanks to great cinematography, imagery and music but creepy is by no means the same as scary. Don't go expecting a traditional horror/scary movie 'cuz this ain't it. Think creepy, not scary. Slow-moving, atmospheric, with an occasional chilling and/or horrifying moment (yes, some good ones, but not many). There's a lot of nearly unintelligible dialogue. One main character has a voice that sounds more animal than human. Key scenes are whispered (in Ye Olde Englishe). And when you do understand the words that are being said, they can be a bit laughable if you haven't submitted to the movie's spell. I guess I didn't, 'cuz I snorted when snorts were clearly far from the maker's mind. That said, its dour gray aesthetic is still floating around in my head, so not forgettable, which has value. I'll probably see it again on a small screen, with the benefit of subtitles. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I saw this opening weekend & it's just been stewing in my brains ever since, because I wasn't sure what I wanted to say. I've been taking in all the other reviews for this film, hoping it would help me find the words…but unfortunately, I disagree with almost every other opinion regarding The Witch. I was greatly disappointed that I paid to see this in a theater instead of waiting to watch at home. This film, at best, is a beautifully shot, perfectly acted series of missed opportunities. Every set-up fell flat, as they were never followed through. This is not a horror movie, no matter what the blurbs & trailers lead you to believe—this is a 17th century folktale about religion, not a horror film. If the intent was to make an actual horror film, small tweaks could have easily been made. Children are creepy anyway, why not play it up with the twins who are supposedly playing with the devil incarnate? Maybe throw in a disembodied voice or two to make you question if it's actually Black Phillip or just a voice in Thomasin's head. Perhaps when you reveal what should be a haunting image of a witch snacking on a live animal, DON'T GIVE HER A GOOFY-ASS CARTOON LAUGH! I wanted to love this movie after watching the trailer, but I don't even think I can like it. Expand

'The Witch' or 'The VVitch' was a film that I had been interested in seeing but kind of forgot about.

Following the witch mythos of early-American folklore, the story centers around a family that has recently left their village and lives alone on the edge of wilderness. When the family's newborn goes missing as oldest daughter, Thomasin is playing with him, suspicions of witchcraft begin to arise, as the mother is completely devastated.

Later on, oldest son, Caleb goes missing in the woods and happens upon a hovel, where he is entranced by a woman. Caleb would eventually return home, but would die after spouting religious exclamations.

The youngest set of children, a twin boy and girl, accuse Thomasin of being a witch, in which her parents believe them. The next morning, the father is impaled by a goat and crushed under a pile of fire wood, and Thomasin kills her mother after being attacked by her. Thomasin then talks to the goat, seemingly the Devil in disguise, where she signs his book and joins a host of other naked witches dancing and chanting around a night fire in the woods.

The film, although painfully slow and boring in large parts, was almost as equally unnerving and disturbing. The parts where we got to see the witch were truly creepy. We first get to see her as she is about to kill the stolen baby, then covered in its blood. The end where she is feeding off of a goat on the family farm before slaughtering the livestock (and twins?) was frightening.

The film, although a horror film, didn't hit you with jump scares and cheap thrills, it was more of a psychological scare more than anything. If you can get past the slow parts and tough accents, you might enjoy the film.

My rating: 5 out f 10

There are some creepy scenes of the movie but there really isn't anywhere near enough suspense and terror for this to be a horror movie. The cinematography was unique, it reminded me a lot of "The Road" in terms of the picture. Very washed out and had a vintage feel. The sets, costume design, script and attention to the era seemed very authentic and well thought-out. The acting was decent from the father figure and the main character girl, but the old English vocabulary made many of the lines almost cringey and somewhat comical. The trailer portrayed this movie as something more deep and sinister, every creepy moment in the trailer is all you get and nothing more. Some of the decisions made by the family were hardly logical at all and that pushed the story in a bit of a nonsensical direction. Not as special or disturbing in my opinion as others are saying in my opinion. Expand

The Witch shares a lot in common with Their Will Be Blood in addition to focusing on history. Both movies have eery haunting music playing over scenes of natural grandeur and horror, and both are surreal. The Witch also reminded me of 2001 Space Odyssey.

Unlike 2001 though, it moves at a decent pace -- in fact I found it immediately engrossing with few slow scenes.

The Witch is a film that whether you love it or hate it you must commend it for its uniqueness and abstraction from typical modern day horror films.
The film is similar to ‘The Babadook’ in some respects due to its lack of reliance on jumpscares and more-so on creating an atmospherically creepy feel to the film. It’s 17th century is a breath of fresh air from the majority of current day setting of modern horror films. However, the film trips up in some parts.
The acting overall is great, but the best being the children in the film who really anchor the films believability. The unsettling imagery creates this eerie and dismal tone over the film that make you feel like you shouldn’t be watching certain scenes.
The Witch itself is an interesting character (Yet rarely seen) as it damages the family in different ways; from straight up kidnap, to seduction, to possession, to murder. It really covers almost every scenario with ease in just 90 minutes.
My problem with this film is due to its dialogue. I know they said the dialogue was taken directly from scripts of the time but they really strained my attention with me finding it hard to buy and swallow at times. The film also focused so much on creating this eerie atmosphere so much that it actually kind of forgets to tell a progressive story at times and can feel a bit stagnant at times. I must admire the film for its tone but solely focusing on that made my mind wither at times.
Overall the film is a horror film you must see in order to make up your opinion on it. Some people love it and some people hate it, but it has shown the progression of horror films moving away from their monotonous feel of the 21st century.

A Puritan Panic Room, the film opens with a family banished from the protections afforded by a New England colony, presumably for whatever crazy-ass rumors were leveled against the prideful patriarch William. The young family reboot their pious pioneering efforts on a new tract of land, but they have some company deep in the gnarly, tangled woods by their new farm.

It's an interesting premise that seems like it should have been mined long ago: Indulge the viewer in the notion that there was something supernatural behind some of the witch trials back then. A good part of the film looks and feels like it could be a new adaptation of The Crucible. The drab clothing, the spartan furnishings, the farm construction all look authentic in studious detail.

The Witch largely avoids the tropes of modern horror cinema and jolts are kept to a minimum. The suspense plays out methodically almost to a fault. This movie may one day be shown in college History classes rather than Film Studies.

Então, coisas estranhas começam a acontecer e abala completamente a estrutura familiar. A Bruxa trás consigo uma forte crítica ao fanatismo religioso. A personagem Katherine vivida por Kate Dickie é a mãe nesta família e seu fanatismo chega há um nível doentil em decorrência aos acontecimentos do longa. Anya Taylor-Joy, entretanto, é o destaque do filme.
A trilha sonora é outro ponto positivo do filme.

If you watch this movie without expecting to be scared at all, then maybe it will be more enjoyable. To be fair, there are a lot of good things this movie has going for it. The acting is great, the imagery is bleak and creepy, and parts of the plot are somewhat interesting. That being said, this is also an incredibly frustrating movie because it moves along so slowly and builds up all this tension with very little payoff. If you like suspenseful movies or historical pieces, then you might enjoy this, but if you're looking for a good horror movie, The Witch comes nowhere close. Expand

The acting is great and Anya Taylor Joy's face (oh man, what a beauty) is well worth the time it's been given. The witch, well, is worth to die for a kiss. Damn she IS EVIL HOT! Horror-wise, not so much of a success and that is the only downside. There were some scenes I laughed as well, but, if a sequel should happen, I would be more than happy to go through this again, 'cause overall it was great. Especially the ending made me very happy and joyful. Thanks Robert Eggers. I'm your follower. Expand

This movie is being promoted as a horror film. You are being lied to. There is nothing scary about this film. Sure, there are some disturbing elements, but there's nothing really to classify this movie as scary.

Yeah, so an old hag snatches a baby and make him guacamole to bath him. It's disturbing, and it seems like a good start, but then the movie descends into a long and boring philosophical drama about sin. If you missed church to go see this move, don't feel bad for it. You're cheating god out of his money and lectures. This movie is a long, boring religious rant.

The acting is not bad, but the dialogue in the film is hard to understand. Every bit of dialogue is spoken in between a whimper, a grunt, and whisper. I only understood 10% of what was actually said.

There are few things that make this movie scary... So the little kids spoke to the devil throughout the whole movie. So a child was kidnapped and use to bath in. Who cares that the young boy **** the witch and died because he sinned for doing it. It's just blah.

Very entertaining. Great acting, engaging story, stellar score. It does have some slower parts but the final act is fantastic. This is not for everyone, but it is a gem in horror movies today.

Eggers captured a puritan family from 1630s New England with the use of natural lighting and candlelight coupled with archaic vocabulary. I’m really glad they opted for natural light and dull-colored clothing which added to the eeriness of the woods. The acting was also phenomenal (the scene of Anya Taylor-Joy and Ralph Ineson was just beautiful) and the score just leads you through the frightening shots. It just really felt authentic and I believe that is what Eggers was trying to achieve for this film, authenticity despite the folkloric idea of a witch.

I loved how Eggers builds up the looming chaos that is about to happen within the family. When the chaos ensued, that is when the horror sets in. The isolation, together with the witch’s endeavor, drove the family to be rattled and deranged. Unfortunately, the very faith which they hold on for safety has blinded them and led them to act beyond reason, even beyond family.

A great film that dissects the horrors of isolation and piousness.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The storyline is as follows: a family is evicted from a village for unknown reasons. They end up alone in a field close to a forest and setup their new home. Their baby is kidnapped by a witch and turned into a witch brew to serve as a rejuvenation potion. Another son of said family is seduced by the now younger witch and through a slow process killed after he returned to his family.

Whilst this is going on, the family gets increasingly tensed: the elder sister feels guilty for having lost the baby under her supervision, the father for having sold mom's golden cup for badly needed hunting gear, the mom is upset for the loss of her golden cup because of emotional value, the remaining two young kids build up a mistrust against their elder sister. And the ailing and dying son doesn't make things easier either; The family falls apart, they end up dead and the elder sister gets lured into becoming a witch herself by Satan.

Their black pet goat was Satan all along and oversaw the demise of a good Christian family from nearby.

That's the story. You'd think that the influence of the witch destabilized their family, and of course such is partially the case, but this was weakly implemented. This family could have easily been destabilized by events far less mystical. The introduction of a witch was arbitrary catalyst to the story. You'll only see three short shots with a witch so the movie barely lives up to its title.

A lot of people like jump-scares, but this is thankfully not that kind of a movie (I despise that cheap technique). Nor is it a slasher though what happened to the baby leaves little to your imagination. Instead it was a slowly developing story towards the climax. That's the keyword here, slow.

Technically it's all fine, though I heard some complaints about the music or sound. My only complaint is the sound at the very end where the witches were chanting together; The sound was too post-processed, making it sound as if the microphone was too close to them. Acting and whatnot was fine too.

We have another movie with great, but unused potential. My main complaint, to conclude, is that it was a family drama which had a few witches in it to keep your attention. I gave it a 4/10 because it needs two more notches to make it into anything but a slow paced drama.

Each scene stumbles on to the next one with little in the way of a thread holding them all together. The movie starts with a family being exiled from a settlement for some religious disagreement but no details. The following scenes are just scenes of their daily lives set a against a background of kiddies disappearing with one featuring a "witch" and killing new borns (though the there is a male and female).

No attempt to explain who the witch is or why, why they have become active, where they came from etc. Movie ends with a bunch of naked women floating in the air during some kind of perceived ritual. Very much a scene to parade some bare arse rather than tieing up and explaining the story, perhaps because there is not really any story.
