Very artificial and full of enlargement

The only strong point that seems to be in this movie is the few silences that Jonathan Demme has managed to capture, but it took too long and it didn't turn out well. Everything in the movie is based on a funny but very serious story.the film does not have script .And it is the only film for which the Academy has become emotional for specific reasons. The set design in the movie is awful. There is neither simplicity nor complexity in it. The story of the movie is full of bugs. The knots of the story are neither real nor fantasy, neither believable nor surreal. A film that is basically a deception. In my opinion, it could have been a more successful movie by switching the roles of Hopkins and Jodie Foster. The pleasure that the story of the movie wants to convey is very confusing and deceptive. Everything suffers from an artificial nostalgia. In the end, it seems that it was one of the few works that I have seen that tries its best to turn a cinematic work into an inhuman tool. Not only is it unsuccessful and it never deceives the professional cinema audience, but it is so ridiculous and funny that it is unbelievable at a certain time. A movie that not only the character but also the style is not seen in it.the tasteless and for example tasty inserts don't do anything and the film remains on its basic interesting idea.… Expand

Should have been called "Loudness of the Lambs" if you ask me. This movie isn't really entertaining and failed to hold my attention. I would rather see "Harry Potter: The Order of the Phoenix".

Definitely one of the best thrillers ever. Hopkins and Foster are incredible, the plot is very tight, not a lot of loose flesh here at all like buffalo Bill liked.

What an insanely overrated movie. I have seen some great movies, old or new. The Silence of the Lambs is an amazing one, while not my personal favourite of the year of 1991 it was a well deserved Best Picture win in my opinion.

Jonathan Demme's direction is superb, the filmI have seen some great movies, old or new. The Silence of the Lambs is an amazing one, while not my personal favourite of the year of 1991 it was a well deserved Best Picture win in my opinion.

Jonathan Demme's direction is superb, the film is shot in a ceaselessly atmospheric manner and Demme never lets the suspense drop. The story from start to finish is enthralling, and the script is tense and thought-provoking.

The Silence of the Lambs is wonderfully acted as well. Jodie Foster is the one who holds the film together and her performance here is one of her most excellent, and I mustn't forget Ted Levine who is very chillingly effective as Buffolo Bill. Anthony Hopkins however steals the film, it is his perhaps most iconic character and he proves that although he is in only a portion of the film his performance lives long in the memory.

All in all, amazing. 10/10 Bethany Cox… Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Absolute cracker of a film. 30 years later and people still talk about this movie. It has never left popular culture still heavily influencing films today and is instantly recognizable from its many references to famous movie quotes. Apart from the really impressive performances by the entire cast (who literally all bring their A-Game), The Silence of the Lambs greatest strength is that it doesn't wallow in depravity, given the nature of the book and the screenplay, wisely choosing to keep a lot of the grisly violence off the screen which makes it even more terrifying. The film is a character study into the minds of two psychopaths and the young rookie cadet trying to match wits with them.

The dialog is snappy and sharp and the first part of the film is very procedural and slow moving (although no less absorbing) but once the second half kicks in, with a fantastic bait and switch twist it becomes a rollercoaster ride of pure unnerving tension as the young cadet finds herself alone in a mad man's dungeon trying to save his next victim.

I saw the film in theaters and vividly remember people hiding underneath their chairs the films tension was so unbearable in its climax. Of course we have been desensitized in the intervening years since this film released so some may look upon the film today and not understand why it frightened so many people upon release but you have to remember no film from this genre had played cat and mouse with its audience the way this film did back upon release, so it caught everybody off guard.

Absolutely brilliant stuff, highly deserving to be in a class of only three films to ever win all five major Academy Awards and easily in my top 5 films of all time.… Expand

Skillful adaptation of Thomas Harris’ bestseller intelligently wallows in the fascination for aberrant psychology and perverse evil, delivering the goods in a way that should electrify critics and mainstream audiences.

There is not a false note nor an extraneous moment as he establishes a vise-like hold almost immediately and doesn’t let up even through the chilling final shot. In the second half of “Something Wild,” Demme demonstrated a marked talent for rough suspense, something he sustains for two hours here.

In a strong performance, Foster fully registers the inner strength her character must summon up to meet the challenges and occasional humiliations her tough assignment entails.

Cast against type as a reserved man in glasses and a suit, Scott Glenn is a very agreeable surprise as the FBI agent who takes a chance by putting his young charge on the case.

The juiciest part is Hopkins,’ and he makes the most of it. Helped by some highly dramatic lighting, actor makes the role the personification of brilliant, hypnotic evil, and the screen jolts with electricity whenever he is on. This is, without doubt, his most effective film appearance to date.

From the huge hall in which Lecter is eerily caged at one point to the dingy rooms of Buffalo Bill’s house, Kristi Zea’s production design is critical to the picture’s mood. Editor Craig McKay keeps doesn’t let a frame stay on too long, and Howard Shore’s rather traditional score outstandingly amplifies the tension and psychological mystery.… Expand

Everything in this movie; plot, direction, acting, pace setting, tone built-up was great. The interaction scenes between two main leads were so much grasping, you want more of their conversation. The pace and tone setting was also good. Everything in the movie looked real, not forceful. Only thing which I didn't like about this movie was that last hour was very much uneven and was little bit unbalanced. The climax scene was the best way to end the movie.

Overall, a treat for movie fans who love psychological horror thriller. You must give it a try, if you haven't.… Expand

Nobody could've nailed those roles better than Foster and Hopkins did; the dynamic between their characters is ultimately what makes this movie as great as it is. Surely everyone knows this movie. The acting and scenes with Hopkins and Foster are classic. The story is interesting and reveals slowly everything. There is only one thing I didnt like: the super self confident Jodie Foster was annoying for me.

Most people see this movie as a classic. Me however, whilst I do see why it was good for its time and a classic for most, it wasn't memorable for me as much. As a genre fan, there's a certain amount of satisfaction when a film is recognized by mainstream audiences. That's what it was like for me in 1992 when Silence of the Lambs swept the Oscar's (Best Picture, Director, Actor and Actress). That's what it was like for me in 1992 when Silence of the Lambs swept the Oscar's (Best Picture, Director, Actor and Actress). And boy did the movie deserve it. Jonathan Demme's fantastic retelling of the classic book by Thomas Harris. Anthony Hopkins' scene-chewing Hannibal Lecter turned him into a pop culture icon (and unfortunately a slew of middling sequels). And Jodie Foster's grim and naive portrayal of Clarice. The final touch is that haunting score. Some of the best movies out there are elevated by a musical score that puts it another league. A phenomenal classic.… Expand

Based on the famous novel by Thomas Harris, and it's about a young FBI cadet who receives the help of Hannibal Lecter, an incarcerated and manipulative cannibal killer to help catch another serial killer, a madman who skins his victims.

There won't be any kind of spoilers in this review, but I'll discuss some of its scenes deeply, without going into spoilers, just wanted to warn y'all. All set? Let's go then!

The Silence of the Lambs starts with our protagonist, Clarice Starling (played by Jodie Foster) training with the opening credits. It's a very effective scene, some viewers won't pay much attention to it, but it's really important, it shows us that our protagonist, Clarice, is nothing but a trainee! Of course, that was mentioned later on in the movie, but seeing her training with your own eyes without the characters telling you at first, is such a powerful scene. We get to see that at the climax of the movie too, not just there, we get to see that in almost every scene that genuinely requires her to do a hard decision. And of course, that goes to the stellar performance by Jodie Foster!

What makes this character so good to watch, is that she is not a professional FBI agent or whatever, she's a trainee, and she's trying to prove herself, sometimes in doing some really hard stuff, and later on, in the movie that was kinda hinted that she's doing it not to impress the others, but to impress herself and do to face the thing that she's most afraid of. And that does make her character very easy to relate to and to sympathize with her character even more!

The movie doesn't take time showing us her backstory at the beginning or giving us all the information about all the characters at first, it takes time, and it gives us the information we need about most of the characters, not in the form of a flashback, but mostly in the form of a dialogue, which is even better because if it was in the form of flashbacks we wouldn't have gotten this amazing scene between Lecter and Starling in the prison, where Starling is telling Lecter about the lambs, which is not just my favorite scene in the movie, but one of my favorite scenes of all-time!

We get quickly to meet Lecter, we get to brief info about him, and how he used to kill and eat his victims, and then we get to meet and see him, and he's not the cannibal we thought he would be, he's very settled, calm, civilized and kinda respectful. And that's another thing this movie nailed, we thought he would be loud and wild, like how he was described, or at least how you imagined he would be, but he's different, even when we get to see him killing and eating a man's lips, he listened to music afterward, which makes him unique and very intriguing.

Anthony Hopkins' performance as Lecter is one of my favorite performances in a horror movie, he nailed this character, every scene he was in it, the tension was there, even though he might be just speaking with someone, or being normal, the way he just talks is very scary!

Ted Levine doesn't get many praises for his role in this movie, maybe because he wasn't in this movie a lot, but still, whenever he was on screen he was pretty good. Everyone in this movie is great, everyone did a great job!

The plot was very intense, the movie doesn't take time, every scene matters, every line builds something, every character is there for a reason, even if it's very minor, but still, it matters, and that's how perfect this movie is, you can watch it and just be mesmerized of how careful the crew was while making this movie.

I didn't read the novel, so I don't know how faithful it was to the source material, but I heard that it was, based on other people's opinions, people who have read the novel and watched the movie.

Demme did a great job with the tension and the thriller, it never got out of its psychological thriller to a supernatural movie, it was always real, and that what makes it scary, with no modern jump scares, it's just pure horror. He did a great job with the psychological study aspects too, he was simply able to build tension and make you on the edge of your seat, even if it's a normal conversation between two characters! His job behind the camera was great, and this movie benefits a lot from his work.

In the end, The Silence of the Lambs is such a perfect movie, with an amazing guy behind the camera who knows how to make real horror, and two stellar main performances in front of the camera, who simply knew how to deliver this horror. I'm gonna give The Silence of the Lambs an A+!

Anthony Hopkins gives a phenomenal performance. Nearly every aspect of this movie is great. It has some slow out of place scenes, but other than that it is brilliantly tense and we'll written. Any scene with letter is instantly great.

Anthony Hopkins is so memorable people think of him as the primary antagonist, he stole the show too such an extent they made it into an entire franchise solely based around him, they give him a leading actor Oscar an award he shouldn't have even been eligible for considering he's only onscreen for 16 minutes but they didn't care.

Jodie Foster also deserves her recognition giving an absolutely stellar performance as the FBI trainee Clarice Starling, the movie uses under utilised filming techniques to draw it's audience in like getting it's actors to deliver lines directly into camera (a very unorthodox method considering the very first thing actors tell you not too do is look at the camera.) it's very effective here and should be done more in films.

There is analysis videos on YouTube that go in depth into the editing and camerawork during the Clarice and Lector scenes and show the various techniques used to make those scenes some of the best in film history. A masterpiece of a movie with the best end credits sequence I've ever seen.… Expand

I haven't revisited this much since I saw it as a kid. I remember my uncle took me to see it and I really liked it but just didn't understand it. Now as an adult I can fully comprehend what's happening and having seen thousands of movie sinceI haven't revisited this much since I saw it as a kid. I remember my uncle took me to see it and I really liked it but just didn't understand it. Now as an adult I can fully comprehend what's happening and having seen thousands of movie since I can appreciate the quality. I've never read the book but the film feels so genuine in its approach just like its main character Clarice starling played by an amazingly vulnerable but strong Jodie Foster. Anthony Hopkins is also amazing in his role and so is Ted Levine. But it's more than that the screening and the way its adapted is unique and intriguing. There's not one moment that's not supremely engaging. Especially the cleverly written and brilliantly performed dialogue. Its without a doubt a perfect storm that makes this horror thriller an unforgettable cinematic masterpiece.

As a horror film buff, I can honestly tell you that I didn't realize at the time how amazing this movie would be. I've seen this movie multiple times and I can confidently say it's in my top 3 of all-time best films. I've seen this movie multiple times and I can confidently say it's in my top 3 of all-time best films. With a slow build and subtle foreshadowing, this psychological thriller will be on your mind even weeks after you've seen it. The two main characters of the story have a dynamic that I've never seen in other movies like this before, I'd sometimes forget I was watching a movie because their chemistry on screen was unmatched. A story of a young detective trying to earn her place on the force takes on the task of hunting down a serial killer named "Buffalo Bill" who skins women alive. To find more clues she speaks with the famed serial killer Hannibal "the cannibal" Lector, a former psychiatrist who helps her break down the clues of the case. The hunting down of Buffalo Bill is merely a side plot while Hannibal is the true star of the film as we see his intelligence and confusing charisma show itself through different scenarios of the movie. The shuttle foreshadowing of Clarice (the detectives) childhood past on a farm impacting her relationship with Hannibal gives us an unspoken story of her true personality and motivations, while Hannibal plays with her thoughts to not only help her with the case but to amuse himself in the process. The film itself lacks action and the blood and guts of traditional horror flicks but the slow build-up pays off at the end. A movie that leaves no stone unturned is perfect for those who love to analyze and be surprised. Jonathan Demme, the director has always fascinated me. Armed with an incredible plot, he always finds a space for his character to come forth and have their voices heard. His spin on these scripts is why the characters grow iconic both artistically and culturally. Of course, you'd be then imitating Anthony Hopkins over the years. Their perspectives are kept on table with a panache that would make even the most reserved, head turn and eyes pop. And maybe, that is why, for a character that is barely on screen, gets the nod of being the lead actor in a film. The best actor, to be precise. And there have been said plenty about this Hannibal Lecter over the years.

So here, I'd like to focus on Jodie Foster. She is the mother of this case. And I feel this for her persona is just as caring as vulnerably open she is about herself. No matter how much powerful everyone else is, no matter how much authority do others have access to, she is the one, consuming all the energy. Just taking it in. And you are waiting for her to express it. Explode onto someone, something. But she doesn't give you that pleasure, just as she won't in front of others.

That's power. There is something admirable on controlling a scene, a film by being the underrated character. And that is why I love underrated characters, the most. Since the beginning. To say so much, to yell. To be so much, to act. And yet, you steer your emotions inwards. Foster's both character and performance is a testimony to those days that has led us here. The Silence Of The Lambs is a silence that is going to stay with you for ages, not scaring you but consoling you, for a happy ending.… Expand

You can truly feel what the main character is feeling as the movie goes on and it just glues you to your spot as the events keep unfolding. The ending brings a chill down your spine with a well-hit twist. I recommend this no matter its age. It's something that modern films and future films have something to learn from.

Decidedly, watching this film, we have the notion that all factors combined, in the ideal measure, to make a piece of art that, even so, due to the topic and some more shocking scenes, is not suitable for sensitive people.

The script is excellent and works in a masterly manner, without errors or holes. The work of director was essential for the success of the film, along with the performance of the actors themselves. In fact, even the supporting actors in the film were very good in their roles, although the spotlight have been under the heads of Hopkins and Foster. The two actors were brilliant, the way they interact is a drama lesson. The penetrating gaze of Hopkins, and his viperous cynicism, are one of the registered marks of the film. OK, it's all honesty that Disney's Beauty and the Beast has nominated for Best Picture from the oscars but lost to The Silence of the Lambs and yes the actors and actresses won for Best Actor and Best Actress. Absolutly phanominal film! Even my mum loves it especially she likes Anthony Hopkins. Jodie Foster is fantastic in this as well even though I love women, Don't tell my mum I've said that. Silence of the Lambs is one of the most iconic films ever, with Anthony Hopkins role as "Dr. Lecter" being part of the general culture for the past twenty something years, and watching for the first time I can definitely say that it deservesSilence of the Lambs is one of the most iconic films ever, with Anthony Hopkins role as "Dr. Lecter" being part of the general culture for the past twenty something years, and watching for the first time I can definitely say that it deserves the acclaim, because just seeing the scenes between him and Jodie Foster is really a treat, even without the rest of the film, which also presents an interesting thriller case. The casting does a good job in general, but as remarked, it is Hopkins and Foster that really puts this one over the top and makes it an excellent movie, a truly grand spectacle that stands as must see to any movie fan that deserves the title. With some iconic and quotable lines, some of the greatest production design and remarkable shots, this one is one that you need to sit and have a go through, maybe with some fava beans and a nice chianti. Este largometraje es un envoltorio de terror que esconde el verdadero género de la película: puro cine negro, viéndose claramente en el pasado de los personajes o el tono oscuro y la investigación policial que son características propias de este género. Temas como la transexualidad o el machismo de telón de fondo. Aquí los guionistas no te lo dan todo mascado y la mayoría de las veces el espectador tiene que unir el las piezas, cosa que denota que la película posee un gran guión. En definitiva, la película me gustó mucho, se me pasó muy muy rápido porque es muy llevadera y te mantiene en tensión e intriga todo el metraje. Granted, 1991 was a slow year for movies, and many pundits have remarked that the Oscar field was among the weakest ever (the other contenders were Disney's Beauty and the Beast, Bugsy, JFK, and the overrated The Prince of Tides), but the strong showing of The Silence of the Lambs was a surprise to almost everyone. In the first place, it was released in February 1991, a date thought to be beyond the short memories of the Academy members. Secondly, it is a dark psychological thriller - the kind of movie that occasionally receives a Best Picture nomination, but almost never takes home the statuette.

Although The Silence of the Lambs is brilliantly constructed and powerfully acted, and became one of the most recognizable thrillers of the '90s, it was neither the best movie of the year (a citation I would award to Beauty and the Beast) nor even the best thriller (overall, Dead Again impressed me more). The Silence of the Lambs contains a number of inarguably great scenes, but the screenplay, adapted from Thomas Harris' novel, suffers from a split personality. The scenes featuring Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins) are the stuff of legends. However, the rest of the movie, which concentrates on the pursuit of serial killer Buffalo Bill (Ted Levine), has a familiar, derivative feel. In truth, the climax couldn't be more mundane.

There is little doubt that the most memorable aspect of The Silence of the Lambs is Anthony Hopkins' incomparable performance as Lecter. Taking over for Brian Cox, who was effective, but not especially memorable, as the good doctor in 1986's Manhunter, Hopkins instantly makes the role his own, capturing and conveying the charismatic essence of pure evil. To his dying day, no matter how many roles he plays in the interim, Hopkins will forever be known for this part. (It is a credit to Hopkins' ability as an actor that this part did not result in stereotyping. His post-Silence career has been greatly varied, with roles as widely diverse as a stodgy butler in Merchant-Ivory's The Remains of the Day and an action hero in The Edge.) I can throw out any number of superlatives, but none of them do justice to this chilling performance, which I labeled as the best acting work of the '90s. Want to feel the icy fingers of terror stroke your heart? Watch this mixture of brilliant eloquence and inhuman cruelty. As portrayed by Hopkins, Hannibal is both a suave, cultured gentleman and an unspeakable fiend. He is gracious and monstrous at the same time. (Hopkins also provided one of the most quotable lines in recent film history with "I ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice Chianti", which was followed by an inimitable slithering slurp.)

The Silence of the Lambs consistently looks good, builds suspense, and does not outstay its welcome. Many two-hour thrillers have dead patches, but that's one characteristic of the genre this movie avoids. Instead of using the common tactic of priming an audience by employing "boo!" moments (fake scares, such as when an animal darts out from behind trash cans), Demme uses what he calls "deceptive cutting" to enhance the tension. There are also little cues that hint at bigger dangers, such as when Clarice receives a nail prick while sliding under the partially-closed door to the garage where she finds Gumb's first victim.

Since its 1991 release, much has been written about The Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal Lecter, Clarice Starling, and the relationship between them. Thomas Harris was so intrigued by the characters that he wrote the sequel, Hannibal, which soared into the top spot on best-seller lists countrywide as soon as it was released. The motion picture follow-up, directed by Ridley Scott and starring Hopkins and Julianne Moore (replacing Foster), is set to open on the 10th anniversary of the release of The Silence of the Lambs. If it's half as involving, it will be a success. The Silence of the Lambs may not have been the best thriller of the year, but it was the most chilling and creepy, and there's no denying that the most celebrated aspect of the film - the Clarice/Hannibal connection - could not have been accomplished with greater skill.… Expand

Just as it seems the noose is tightening around the killer, Lecter, in an remarkably fine suspense Sequence, manages an unthinkable escape. The FBI and, on her own, Starling must use all the info and guts they have to finally corner Buffalo Bill. But then, there is Lecter.

Harris’ plot is as tight as a coiled rattler, and it has motivated Jonathan Demme to turn out his leanest, meanest work. Abandoning the colorful frills and offbeat mixed moods of “Something Wild” and “Married to the Mob,” this always interesting director has devoted himself to relentless storytelling.

There is not a false note nor an extraneous moment as he establishes a vise-like hold almost immediately and doesn’t let up even through the chilling final shot. In the second half of “Something Wild,” Demme demonstrated a marked talent for rough suspense, something he sustains for two hours here.

At the outset, Demme and his longtime ace lenser, Tak Fujimoto, plunge the viewer directly into the p.o.v. of the novice investigator Stariing, as she goes face to face with the diabolical Lecter and, as suggested by the title, is forced to confront her own childhood demons relating to the slaughter of animals. Film is omniscient, however, showing the activities of Buffalo Bill as well as those of Lecter later on.

In a strong performance, Foster fully registers the inner strength her character must summon up to meet the chaUenges and occasional humiliations her tough assignment entails.

Cast against type as a reserved man in glasses and a suit, Scott Glenn is a very agreeable surprise as the FBI agent who takes a chance by putting his young charge on the case.

The juiciest part is Hopkins,’ and he makes the most of it. Helped by some highly dramatic lighting, actor makes the role the personification of brilliant, hypnotic evil, and the screen jolts with electricity whenever he is on. This is, without doubt, his most effective film appearance to date.

From the huge hall in which Lecter is eerily caged at one point to the dingy rooms of Buffalo Bill’s house, Kristi Zea’s production design is critical to the picture’s mood. Editor Craig McKay keeps doesn’t let a frame stay on too long, and Howard Shore’s rather traditional score outstandingly amplifies the tension and psychological mystery.… Expand

I think what I love most about Silence of the Lambs is it's filming craft. This movie truly heightens your sense to the maximum degree, you are completely and utterly aware of intentions and brooding desires from both Buffalo Bill and Hannibal, but does it completely succeed in feeding these desires? Not entirely, but in many respects it does. The film clearly has a certain essence of expression to it for it's first pointed to be generic yet surprisingly deep hill-billy antagonist. We can see an almost angering cycle of predator transforming into scavenger and a brief victory of innocence immediately terminated by the film's excellent conclusion which indicates a slightly ambiguous, although intentionally intriguing, return to norm. However, I believe Silence of the Lambs may be a little too intrigued with it's fascinating characters to give them any lore or necessary origin, something I was craving to see from Hannibal but oh my mouth was completely watering to see it from Buffalo Bill. This confused moth man, I was likewise confused whether to feel sympathy or not due to the fantastic Goodbye Horses sequence. Nonetheless, Silence of the lambs is a structural master-class and daringly explores decay in it's natural form although it's complete cocooning whittles away at some earth shattering, pivotal messages the film was aiming for.… Expand

WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: It's just not subtle enough. Tension should be played out delicately, and in this film it's slapped in your face, which means there's no drop in the tone and thus it feels long and dragged out. As a result it's also not very pyscological, as every theme is presented blatantly and obviously (and the intrusive music does little to help this.)
VERDICT: A thriller that exceeds in terms of characterisation, but fails when it comes to building tension and excitement.… Expand

Anthony Hopkins has such a presence in this film that he stays with you even when he’s not in the scene. He’s in your head the whole time but when you think of it he’s barely in the movie, he just has a few scenes that’s how powerful his performance is.

The film is so smartly shot, they chose a petite actress, that can easily look frail, and they used some wide shots from above to show how small she is around the Men, and shows how small and inexperience she must feel around them. Jodie Foster played her character with sensitivity and a quiet strength that also elevated the film.

The Silence of the Lambs is over 20 years old but it holds up, you’re drawn to this suspenseful thriller from the beginning to the end, and then it stays with you. @wornoutspines… Expand

In the first place, it was released in February 1991, a date thought to be beyond the short memories of the Academy members. Secondly, it is a dark psychological thriller - the kind of movie that occasionally receives a Best Picture nomination, but almost never takes home the statuette.

Although The Silence of the Lambs is brilliantly constructed and powerfully acted, and became one of the most recognizable thrillers of the '90s, it was neither the best movie of the year (a citation I would award to Beauty and the Beast) nor even the best thriller (overall, Dead Again impressed me more). The Silence of the Lambs contains a number of inarguably great scenes, but the screenplay, adapted from Thomas Harris' novel, suffers from a split personality. The scenes featuring Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins) are the stuff of legends. However, the rest of the movie, which concentrates on the pursuit of serial killer Buffalo Bill (Ted Levine), has a familiar, derivative feel. In truth, the climax couldn't be more mundane.

There is little doubt that the most memorable aspect of The Silence of the Lambs is Anthony Hopkins' incomparable performance as Lecter. Taking over for Brian Cox, who was effective, but not especially memorable, as the good doctor in 1986's Manhunter, Hopkins instantly makes the role his own, capturing and conveying the charismatic essence of pure evil. To his dying day, no matter how many roles he plays in the interim, Hopkins will forever be known for this part. (It is a credit to Hopkins' ability as an actor that this part did not result in stereotyping. His post-Silence career has been greatly varied, with roles as widely diverse as a stodgy butler in Merchant-Ivory's The Remains of the Day and an action hero in The Edge.) As portrayed by Hopkins, Hannibal is both a suave, cultured gentleman and an unspeakable fiend. He is gracious and monstrous at the same time. It's impossible to mention Clarice without noting that she is one of the rarest commodities in thrillers: a female hero. In interviews, Foster has indicated that, of all the roles she has played in a career that began in childhood, Clarice is her favorite (which makes it odd that she didn't try harder to re-arrange her schedule so she could reprise the part in The Silence of the Lambs' sequel, Hannibal). In addition to having to face Lecter's mind-games and the dangers associated with Buffalo Bill, she must deal with the sexual politics of being a woman in a man's world. The most telling scene occurs early in the movie, when Crawford takes her on a "field trip" to view the latest victim. There, in a hick town, she finds herself stripped of authority as a result of a casual comment by Crawford, and surrounded by a group of macho, male cops. After momentarily escaping by taking flight into a memory of her father's funeral, she regroups and takes charge of the situation, ordering the men to clear the room where the body is housed. Thus does Clarice become a woman championing victimized women - a real heroine, not a woman imitating a testosterone-driven stereotype.

The Silence of the Lambs may not have been the best thriller of the year, but it was the most chilling and creepy, and there's no denying that the most celebrated aspect of the film - the Clarice/Hannibal connection - could not have been accomplished with greater skill.… Expand

Jodie Foster's interpretation of Clarice Starling is not as high-profile as Hopkins' work, but the film wouldn't have been the same without her. In a quiet, non-flashy manner, Foster takes ownership of Clarice, transforming her into the movie's human anchor; she is our point-of-entry into the contorted, grotesque world of murder, insanity, and decadence. Clarice is developed into a multidimensional human being who is driven to succeed in a man's world, haunted by memories of the loving father she lost at an early age, and fascinated by the twisted brilliance of Lecter. There isn't a false note in the performance. Foster's best scenes are the ones in which she is paired with Hopkins, such as the instance in which Clarice's facial expression crumbles almost imperceptibly while Lecter coldly and cruelly dissects her life. It's arguable whether Foster deserved a Best Actress Oscar for her work in The Silence of the Lambs, but there's no doubt that she is owed more recognition for the film's success than she often receives.

Since its 1991 release, much has been written about The Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal Lecter, Clarice Starling, and the relationship between them. Thomas Harris was so intrigued by the characters that he wrote the sequel, Hannibal, which soared into the top spot on best-seller lists countrywide as soon as it was released. The motion picture follow-up, directed by Ridley Scott and starring Hopkins and Julianne Moore (replacing Foster), is set to open on the 10th anniversary of the release of The Silence of the Lambs. If it's half as involving, it will be a success. Along with Se7en this is one of the most thrilling and darkest thrillers in film history.

It is testament to Jonathan Demme's superb adaptation of Thomas Harris' cult 80s novel that these two images of Lecter never lose their grip from the quite brilliant opening visiting sequence, the one reaffirming the other, combining to create the most memorable basketcase in the movies since Norman Bates first opened for business. This is a man who sketches and listens to Mozart while planning to literally eat off a policeman's face, a creature sensitive to Starling's tale of childhood torment yet cruelly reticent in supplying clues that might lead to the capture of the serial killer closest to his natural heir.

Ultimately, though, Demme's breakthrough film is a triumph by virtue of its narrative strength, its sheer confidence in tackling Harris complex characterisation head-on, and its ability to scare the **** out of its audience without ever once resorting to amateur hour frightwigs and hands-over-the-eyes. Fingerlickin' good.

My friend always said a thriller should have a psychological facet in a movie. Well, me and him watched this together and I could not be more pleased with what this movie had to offer.. Believe me, alot of thriller movies have done a good jobMy friend always said a thriller should have a psychological facet in a movie. Well, me and him watched this together and I could not be more pleased with what this movie had to offer.. Believe me, alot of thriller movies have done a good job emulating this film without trying to exactly copy it. I love the acting, the plot, and the literal thrill of suspense. Im a music guy so I do pay attention to the musical score and lets just say the Munich Symphony Orchestra made me check the curtains and grab an extra layer of sheets.

Jonathan Demme deserves credit for directing this and so does Ted Tally for writing the screenplay.
It's weird but I get the sense that this movie could really happen in real life. I got annoyed at some of the acting but it won best actor and actress so don't take my word for it. Last thing I want to mention is that this movie tackled on some really tough issues like homophobia and sexual orientation. That is BIG considering the 80s was a really rough period for the LGBT community.

Treat yo self and watch this movie. If the US Library of Congress approves and you don't, you're not appreciating American work. Just kidding but I love a smart, bad-ass villain… Expand

He's still the gold standard for the movie villain (even though he's kind of the hero), and I doubt he'll ever be surpassed. There are so many fascinating, creepy, and even disturbing aspects about the relationship between Starling and Lector, but I'll let you find this out for yourself. The characters here are as nuanced as I've ever seen. Foster's performance is also excellent. I must warn you, it's a graphic, disturbing, and at times even disgusting film, and on a different note some of the technical aspects of the movie haven't aged so well, but all in all, it's so memorable and haunting that I have to call it an absolute horror/crime classic. I'll admit, I've had nightmares where I was in a building with Hannibal on the loose. Those were some scary dreams.… Expand

Wow. I don't know why I haven't seen this sooner!

I really loved this. The film was complex, but never to the point that you got completely lost. I found myself getting confused about where we were, and then it would all click a fewWow. I don't know why I haven't seen this sooner!

I really loved this. The film was complex, but never to the point that you got completely lost. I found myself getting confused about where we were, and then it would all click a few seconds later. It was very clever at making sure you were aware of which character was who.

The direction is very interesting in this film, with the contrast of the dark and gritty world of the FBI, and what happens when a character is put in prison, but when this then goes against the killer's room, I loved the designs, with all the colours etc.

But lets face it. We all know why this film works so well.

Anthony Hopkins. I bow down to you.

I heard he was only in the film for about 15 minutes. That was a lie. He was just brilliant. The perfect mix of charm and menace to create a truly unforgettable villain. Hannibal Lecter really is the standout of the film, and will have you on the edge of your seat, whenever he is on the screen.

I think the thing that kept me interested the most here was that it was simply a great story. An involving and original story that had me in it's bloody palms from start to finish.… Expand

How anybody could not like this moving is beyond me. Director Jonathan Demme did a fantastic job and all of the actors were marvelous, especially Hopkins and Foster. The film is an 11/10. A 10/10 doesn't do it justice.

A surprisingly great film. Great performances by the lead actors, which contribute all the more to the sense of tension throughout the film, and a stunning finale. I thought I would watch this movie throughout the day as the trailer made it looked like it would scare the hell out of me however this movie was much more creepy than scary. Obviously Anthony Hopkins stole the show as Hannibal, it wasI thought I would watch this movie throughout the day as the trailer made it looked like it would scare the hell out of me however this movie was much more creepy than scary. Obviously Anthony Hopkins stole the show as Hannibal, it was strange as the movie went on I wanted him to escape. For me I preferred the scenes with Hannibal in to "Buffalo Bill" but Jodie Foster played a good Clarice Starling with excellent chemistry with Lecter. Overall I would give the movie 7/10 but as it was realised in 1991 I can understand why it… Expand
